Sunil Gavaskar said there could be no more excellent man than Ravi Shastri to support growing ability.

"Ravi has got the ability to give so much confidence to youngsters, it's unbelievable if Ravi Shastri believes in their ability and talent, there is no better man than Ravi Shastri to give encouragement to&nbsp;youngsters. He will scold you, tell you off but at the same time, he will tell you what you can do to get better, he will actually demonstrate to you," Sunil Gavaskar said in a recent webinar during a book launch.

Mithali Raj will lead Team India in the 2022 World Cup and Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar had a piece of advice for the Women in Blue before they head into the competition.&nbsp;

The former opener recalled the 2017 Women's World Cup final at Lord's where Team India lost to England. Gavaskar said that the English team intimidated India's lower order batters with their attitude and urged them to learn from Virat and Co. and glare them back.&nbsp;

"I was with my wife at Lord's watching the 2017 Women ODI World Cup final. What I saw was that English girls came hard at your lower order and intimidated them with their attitude.

"I would want the girls to glare back at the opposition instead of looking down. I feel body language is a very important aspect. Look at Virat Kohli, he stares at opposition and the rest of the team does that," Gavaskar said during a virtual book launch.

Earlier, skipper Mithali Raj gave a hint of retirement after the tournament. She on Saturday said that the 2022 50-over World Cup in New Zealand will be her ‘swansong’ following 23 renowned years in worldwide cricket.

"It's been 21 years of international cricket and I know 2022 is my swansong, The World Cup," Mithali Raj said during the virtual launch of the book 1971: The Beginning of India's Cricketing Greatness.&nbsp;

"The last year is equal to the 20 years of my international cricket," she added.

"The importance of being in a very good emotional and mental set-up, knowing that there will be very few tours before the World Cup." Indian women are set to play four bilateral series -- away tours in England, Australia, and New Zealand and a home series against West Indies sandwiched in between.

"Every tour is important for me as a batter as to how I am going to get the team to regroup and build a team for the World Cup," she said.

She even talked about the team's aggression.&nbsp;

Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar believes that Team India can't use the left-arm spinner as their fifth bowling option.&nbsp;

Speaking on Star Sports after the match, Gavaskar said: "I will say the Indian bowling was probably a little weak because Krunal Pandya cannot be your fifth bowler, he cannot be a bowler who bowls 10 overs. You need a bowler like Yuzvendra Chahal on such pitches, who can bowl 10 overs.

"Pandya brothers can bowl 10 overs together but if the Indian team has to perform well and win the next match they will have to think a lot about their fourth, fifth, and sixth bowlers," Gavaskar added.

Krunal Pandya has been in good touch with the bat in the lower order for Team India, however, the cricketer has struggled with the ball.&nbsp;

"If you are going to bat Krunal Pandya at No.7, you will have to see him as a bowler who can bat. But is that the correct number for him? If you are playing him as a batsman at No.5 or No.6 and if he has to bowl 4-5 overs, it is fine but the Indian team needs to have five bowlers and the sixth can be Hardik Pandya, who can bowl 3-4 overs," Gavaskar added.

"There was no pressure on Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow. If the Indian team had a spin bowler, like Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravindra Jadeja, the story might have been different," said Gavaskar.

The pink-ball Test match at the Motera Ground will be the second match in the country. Former batting great Sunil Gavaskar contemplated India's possible changes for the upcoming Test match. As per former India skipper, the team might go ahead with three pacers and two spinners due to it being a Day/Night fixture.

"Jasprit Bumrah will be there. You're looking at three seam bowlers for sure. It's a pink ball Test so maybe one of the spinners will find themselves out of the team. Most likely it will be Kuldeep because he hasn't had too many opportunities, and Axar and R Ashwin. Ashwin you can’t drop for the next five years. So that will be the attack," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

Yadav went wicketless in the first innings of the Test match (where he bowled six overs), in the second innings, Kuldeep picked up two wickets (Ben Foakes and Moeen Ali). Hardik Pandya's availability as bowler still remains in doubt as the all-rounder was seen practising at the Motera Stadium.&nbsp;

'I'm not sure if Hardik Pandya is fit enough to bowl because if he is, he can also slot in and India might actually go with a combination depending on the surface. I don't know what the surface at the new Motera will be like, but my feeling is that they will definitely go with three seam bowlers and two spinners," the former India captain stated.

Gavaskar was sure of Bumrah returning to the team to bolster the bowling attack for Team India.&nbsp;

"Bumrah for sure will be back in the team. You'll probably have a new-ball attack in Bumrah, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Siraj as your three new-ball bowlers, and Kuldeep… he may find himself out of the team because it's a pink-ball Test. The ball does tend to do a little bit more as evening approaches. And once you play under lights, it's a completely different seam so I would imagine that would be the only change, Bumrah coming in place of Kuldeep."

'So that will be the attack..': Gavaskar predicts India's possible XI ahead of pink-ball Test

Former Indian captain and a legend of cricket, Sunil Gavaskar has ripped into the critics questioning the quality of the pitch in the second Test between India and England at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Former England cricketers Michael Vaughan&nbsp;and Matt Prior are among those who have heavily&nbsp;criticised&nbsp;the Chennai pitch for being a 'rank turner' and a 'dustbowl' as it&nbsp;assisted&nbsp;the spinners from Day 1 of the match.&nbsp;

While India posted 329 runs in the first innings following Rohit Sharma's sensational 161-run knock, England were outplayed by the Indian spinners with Ravichandran Ashwin picking up his 29th&nbsp;fifer in Test cricket. England were bundled out for 134 runs as&nbsp;former England cricketers came out with their critical takes on the pitch.&nbsp;

'When ball starts to turn...': Sunil Gavaskar hammers critics for slamming Chennai pitch in 2nd Test

Former cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar was all praise for India's bowling unit which was missing their key players. However, former India batsmen highlighted a key issue that the country's bowling unit is facing since 1932.&nbsp;

According to Gavaskar, Indian bowlers have struggled to pick up the last few wickets of the opposition quickly. “The Indian bowlers get the first wickets but they struggle to get the last five wickets,” Gavaskar said in the Extraaa Innings show aired on Sony Sports Network after the end of first day’s play in Brisbane.

Despite reducing Australia to 213 for 5 wickets, Indian bowlers failed to capitalise and a 61-run partnership between skipper Tim Paine and newbie Cameron Green helped the hosts finish the day with 274 runs on board.&nbsp;

“India at least till tea time were controlling the game. If they got another couple of wickets then you could’ve said the day was India’s India had a really good chance of restricting Australia if they had got another wicket but this unbeaten partnership as taken it towards Australia,” Gavaskar said.

Despite the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindran Jadeja, Indian bowlers managed to put some pressure on the Aussies.&nbsp;

“I think the Indian attack did exceptionally well. When you look at Shardul (Thakur), he had hardly bowled a dozen delivery when he had played his first Test, Navdeep Saini just one Test match old so also (Mohammed) Siraj, T Natarajan, and (Washington) Sundar playing their first games so for all that the first 5 wickets that they’ve taken tells you how much they were committed to the task,” he said.

However, Gavaskar warned the new bowlers about the struggle Team India has been facing since 1932.&nbsp;

“Like it has happened since 1932 when India played their first game in England, they had England’s top five out for a low score and the last five added a lot of runs. So that has been the story of Indian cricket.

“I’m only hoping they don’t struggle as much as 1932 or subsequently and they restrict Australia to maybe 350 or thereabouts,” Gavaskar said.

'Happening since 1932': Sunil Gavaskar points out main issue with India's bowling unit

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Monday lashed out at Australian captain Tim Paine for sledging Ravichandran Ashwin during the drawn Sydney Test as he said that his behaviour was unbefitting of a leader and could ultimately cost him his leadership duties. &nbsp;

Australia’s lethal bowling attack was unable to run past the Indian batting unit as the visitors hung on for a memorable draw at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.&nbsp;

"I don't know I am not an Australian selector, but his days as captain are numbered. If you allow the Indian team to bat 130-odd overs without getting wickets, this is a very good Australian attack. The bowling changes, the field placements, everything could have made a difference to the result," Gavaskar told India Today. &nbsp;

Paine’s dropped catches resulted in Australia failing to dismiss the Indian batting unit in the second innings. Even after exchanging war of words with Ashwin to break his concentration, Paine dropped Vihari’s catch which was the final nail in the coffin for the hosts.&nbsp;

'His days as captain are numbered': Sunil Gavaskar rips into Tim Paine for unruly conduct

With Rohit Sharma joining Team India’s training session on Thursday, debates and discussions are taking place on who the Hitman will replace in the playing XI for the third Test against Australia, scheduled to start from January 7 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has opined on his options of Indian openers in the New Year’s Test at the SCG.&nbsp;

Rohit’s availability and Umesh Yadav’s injury have complicated the selection for Team India in the third Test. Gavaskar, when asked about his preferred choice of openers for the third Test, said that he would keep Mayank Agarwal in the playing XI and pair him up with Rohit Sharma. The Little Master added that Shubman Gill, who impressed everyone in his Test debut, should be moved to number five to accommodate Rohit at the top and replace Hanuma Vihari.

“I would be keeping Mayank Agarwal. I know he’s not looked good but he’s a quality player. I would keep him in the side and open the batting with Rohit,” Gavaskar told Sanjay Manjrekar on Sony Sports Network.

Gavaskar further said, "Despite the fact that Shubman Gill has looked so good at the top, I’d look to bat him at No.5. I’m not too sure, that with his approach he would be too successful at the opening position also at the U19 level he was batting down the order so I think for Shubman Gill no.5 would be the ideal position. The rest of the team should remain same and obviously if Gill bats at five, Vihari goes out automatically.”

Rohit, Shubman or Mayank? Sunil Gavaskar picks his Indian openers for 3rd Test vs Australia

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday said that he will not term Ajinkya Rahane`s leadership "outstanding" as lovers of the game will then call him out for having a bias for players coming from Mumbai.

Gavaskar`s remarks came as India bundled out Australia for 195 in the first innings of the second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after being asked to bowl first. For the visitors, Jasprit Bumrah scalped four wickets while Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets.

"From what I have seen in the last 2 Tests he has captained and ODI matches he captained, he has got a great sense of where the fielders should be kept. Having said that, it`s very important for the bowlers to bowl to their field. If the bowlers bowl to the field, as they did today, then the captain looks very good," Gavaskar said on Sony Network.

"Importantly, let`s not jump to conclusions too quickly. If I say that his captaincy is outstanding, then again, I will be accused of backing a Mumbai boy and all kinds of things will happen. So I don`t want to get into that because these are early days," he added.

Bumrah scalped four, Ravichandran Ashwin took three while Mohammad Siraj took two wickets to bundle out Australia for 195. Rahane had also employed a leg slip for his bowlers on the first day at MCG and as a result, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Tim Paine all fell into the trap."It`s important for India to look beyond the fact that it`s only Rahane`s captaincy. It`s the way Ashwin bowled, it`s the way Bumrah bowled, it`s the way Siraj made his debut. I mean imagine, being a new-ball bowler, and you don`t get to bowl a single delivery before the second session. Only in the second session, you get to bowl in the 27th over but he showed great spirit in the way he came and bowled,` said Gavaskar.

"These are the things we should enjoy. It tells you a lot about this Indian team that they were at the Australians and they got the early wicket. With the Indian bowlers once again stealing the show, it was a test of facing 11 overs of quality pace bowling for the batsmen in the closing stages of the opening day. While Shubman Gill came out with flying colours, having hit an unbeaten 38-ball 28, Mayank Agarwal failed to stand up and get counted as he fell for a duck.

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday said that he will not term Ajinkya Rahane`s leadership "outstanding" as lovers of the game will then call him out for having a bias for players coming from Mumbai.

If they hadn`t got the early wicket, if Australia had gotten to a 60 or 70 for 0 kind of start, then their body language might have been different," he added. Ind vs Aus: Gavaskar doesn't wish to talk about Rahane's captaincy fearing accusation

Ravichandra Ashwin was one of the fewest players in Team India who had a successful spell during the first Test against Australia in Adelaide. The spin wizard got some crucial wickets for the hosts including in-form batsman Steve Smith.&nbsp;

However, Ashwin's position was in doubt if Ravindra Jadeja would have been fit for the match. Ravichandran Ashwin has had prolific spinner for India and has been consistent with his performance when the team tours abroad, but his place in the playing XI has always been in doubt. Former batting great Sunil Gavaskar talked about this and said that Ashwin has been the victim for his ‘forthrightness’ and ‘speaking his mind at meetings’.

“For far too long Ashwin has suffered not for his bowling ability of which only the churlish will have doubts, but for his forthrightness and speaking his mind at meetings where most others just nod even if they don’t agree,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

Ashwin has performed well for India in the longest format. The Chennai-based player has performed both with the bat and bowl.&nbsp;

“Any other country would welcome a bowler who has more than 350 Test wickets and not to forget four-Test match centuries, too.

“However, if Ashwin doesn’t take heaps of wickets in one game he is invariably sidelined for the next one. That does not happen to established batsmen though. Even if they fail in one game they get another chance and another and another but for Ashwin, the rules seem to be different,” Gavaskar wrote.

Young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw is likely to be dropped from the Indian playing XI for the Boxing Day Test, scheduled to start from January 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. While there are calls for Shubman Gill to replace Shaw in the opening slot, former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has given his take on who should replace Shaw as the opener in Indian playing XI.

Shaw has looked out of form since the Indian Premier League and continued his poor run of form in the warm-up matches against Australia A. However, he was handed a start in the Adelaide Test, which ended up in Australia’s favour with Shaw returning with scores of 0 and 4.&nbsp;

“India should start the Melbourne Test well, it’s necessary for them to step onto the ground with a lot of positivity. Australia’s weak point is their batting,” said Gavaskar.

As per some reports, Shami suffered a fractured arm. According to news agency ANI, Shami has been ruled out of the Test series, though an official confirmation on the same from BCCI is still awaited.

India's former skipper Sunil Gavaskar said that Shami's absence will be a big blow for Team India. “It (Shami injury) is a big problem. he has the knack of taking wickets, he can shock the opposition with his bouncers and yorkers. If he is not playing, then it’s going to be trouble for India,” Gavaskar told Sports Tak.

Gavaskar went as far as to suggest that India should immediately bring in Ishant Sharma if he is fit. “If Ishant Sharma is fit, I am suggesting to send him to Australia now. If he is capable of bowling 20 overs in a day, the management should send him to Australia on tomorrow’s flight so that he can be ready for the Sydney Test,” he said.

According to India's batting legend Gavaskar, vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane should bat for the team at the crucial No.4 position after Kohli leaves for the birth of his first child.

“Virat’s obviously there only for the first Test then you’d expect Rahane to take over (as captain) but they (India) have to find someone to bat at No.4. Who do you expect to take that No.4 spot?” asked former Australia skipper Ponting, who was the host of the panel discussion aired on 7 cricket, the official broadcaster of India vs Australia Tests.

“It looks to me it could be KL Rahul. Or no, actually I think Rahane will go at No.4 once Virat goes away,” Gavaskar said in reply.

Gavaskar went on to talk about the No.5 situation, he said: “Then you might have Rahul bat at No.5 or Shubman Gill.”

Talking about the first the Test, Gavaskar said Australia have the experience of playing more pink-ball Tests.

“I would think whoever bats well is going to win the game. Australia has played a lot of (day-night) matches, they have the experience of knowing exactly what happens when the sun’s going down and how to bat and bowl at that particular point of time,” he said.

From KXIP's short run to Suresh Raina: Here are top 5 controversies of IPL 2020

Royal Challengers Bangalore were the frontrunners in this year's IPL and were considered a lethal squad in the tournament. However, the scenario changed in the latter stage of the league.&nbsp;

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/royal-challengers-bangalore-look-to-tweak-team-waiting-for-ipl-2021-auction-341447" hreflang="en">Royal Challengers Bangalore look to tweak team, waiting for IPL 2021</a>

Royal Challengers barely, but made it into the playoffs after losing four consecutive matches. The streak was extended after they were knocked out by SRH in the Eliminator. Their batting lineup crumbled towards the business end of the tournament.

Despite Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, RCB's batting order were out of steam in these matches. Former India captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar think that the Royal Challengers must look for a player who can play the role of the finisher. According to Gavaskar, Shivam Dube can fit into that role.

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/eight-years-is-long-time-gautam-gambhir-wants-rcb-to-remove-virat-kohli-as-skipper-341364" hreflang="en">'Eight years is long time': Gambhir wants RCB to remove Kohli as skipper</a>

"I think where they need to do a little bit of thinking is to give Shivam Dube a proper role. Dube has gone down and Sundar has gone up and down. If he can be given a role and told to go out there and thrash the ball, it might help him. He is confused now. If they can get a solid player at No. 5, then it will ease the pressure of de Villiers and Virat," remarked Gavaskar on Star Sports.

Gavaskar commented on Virat Kohli's form this season and said that the RCB skipper couldn’t match high standards he has set with the bat. Kohli scored 450 runs this season with a strike rate of 121.35.&nbsp;

"Looking at the high standards that he sets for himself, maybe he would say he didn’t quite match that and that’s one of the reasons why RCB weren’t able to go through. Because when he scores those big runs along with AB de Villiers, they invariably have big scores," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"If anything, their bowling has always been their weak point. Even now, in this particular team, they have got an Aaron Finch, who is a fine T20 player, young Devdutt Padikkal, who began well and then Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, then you have really got it made," he added.

Also read: 'Eight years is long time': Gambhir wants RCB to remove Kohli as skipper "I think where they need to do a little bit of thinking is to give Shivam Dube a proper role. Gavaskar commented on Virat Kohli's form this season and said that the RCB skipper couldn’t match high standards he has set with the bat. Kohli scored 450 runs this season with a strike rate of 121.35.

Sunil Gavaskar suggests this player could be 'perfect finisher' for RCB

Sunil Gavaskar issues clarification after commentary controversy involving Kohli-Anushka

Indian cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar has found himself in a controversy following his comments on Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a>. Bollywood actress and wife of Kohli, Anushka later took to social media Instagram to send a strong message to Gavaskar.

However, Gavaskar’s comments was not taken well by Kohli and Anushka’s fans as they slammed the former Indian captain on social media platform Twitter. While Kohli dropped two easy catches of centurion KL Rahul in the match, he failed to make a mark with his willow and was dismissed off just one run.&nbsp;

Gavaskar during the match allegedly said: “Inhone lockdown me to bas Anushka ki bowling ki practice ki hain". (Virat Kohli has only trained against Anushka’s bowling during the lockdown).&nbsp;

Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who is also in UAE as a part of commentary panel, has predicted that Williamson (who was named SRH's captain while Warner was away) might not feature in the playing XI. In an interview to Sports Tak, Gavaskar named his playing XI. His list included David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi as four overseas players in his playing XI and left out Kane Williamson. "The way Warner and Bairstow had their opening partnership in the entire tournament, both made many runs. So they will open the batting. Then you need the two Afghan players Nabi and Rashid as they are match-winners. That is why Kane Williamson will have to sit out for the first few matches," he said. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar is of the view that Indian Premier League (IPL) could be played in Sri Lanka in September even if T20 World Cup goes ahead as per schedule in October-November. The batting great has said that instead of playing double-headers, the tournament could be played with one-legged matches.&nbsp;

The T20 World Cup is scheduled to be played in Australia from October 18 to November 19 but there were reports stating that the showpiece event could be postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Australian government has allowed crowds up to 10,000 in stadiums from June and it has given a new lifeline to Australia in terms of hosting the event as planned. The ICC will make a decision on the tournament next month.&nbsp;

"If the ICC believes that the World T20 can happen, then having the IPL looks difficult because it could only be held if the World T20 is postponed," the former India captain told a leading Indian news portal.

Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev among others to support players amid coronavirus

The COVID-19 pandemic has wiped out the entire sporting calendar, leaving fans and sportspersons with no live action at all. Athletes have taken to social media platforms to keep their fans engaged. However, there are reports surfacing that sporting action might witness resumption soon but behind closed doors. Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has given his take on the resumption of live matches.

Gavaskar is of the view that sporting authorities would be certainly banging their heads in frustration over the halt in sporting action while adding there are many intelligent people who would come up with some sort of solution in a bid to keep every party happy.

The former India skipper further said that with how things are going, fans and sportspersons might be deprived of any sort of live action for four to five months more which is going to be tough for both fans and players.&nbsp;

"Officials of all the various sporting federations would certainly be banging their heads together to find a solution and I am sure there are many intelligent people in there to be able to come up with some sort of a solution which will keep everybody happy but it's not gonna be easy,” Gavaskar told a leading news portal.

While IPL 2020 has been indefinitely postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic, there are major question marks on whether Australia will be able to host the ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in October-November.

'We might not see any live sport for 4-5 months' - Sunil Gavaskar gives his take on resumption of sporting action

Former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar has suggested swapping the hosts of next two ICC T20 World Cups, which is scheduled to be hosted by Australia (2020) and India (2021) given the COVID-19 curve flattens out in India in the next few weeks or months.&nbsp;

The coronavirus pandemic has wiped out the sporting calendar with dark clouds hovering over the ICC T20 World Cup 2020, scheduled to be hosted by Australia from October 18 to November 15. However, with Australia sealing its borders for the next six months, there are major concerns on how the country will host the showpiece event.

"As we all know, Australia has barred foreigners from entering the country until 30 September. The tournament starts mid-October so it is looking difficult at the moment," Gavaskar told India Today.

"Next year the T20 World Cup is in India. If India and Australia come to an agreement and the COVID-19 curve in India flattens out, they can swap. It can be held in India this October-November and next year in Australia around the same time."

The much-awaited Indian Premier League (IPL) was indefinitely postponed amid the COVID-19 pandemic but there is slight possibility of it being played in September, before the T20 World Cup. Gavaskar is of the view that IPL can be played before the T20 World Cup and players will get adequate practice for the marquee event without even travelling much.

"If it (T20 WC swap) happens that way, IPL is just held prior to T20 World Cup so there is enough practice for the players. Then you can have the T20 World Cup in November and Asia Cup in December in UAE. December is a much better time to host a tournament in the UAE," said the 70-year-old.
