The legendary Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday donated Rs 59 lakh, while Test regular Cheteshwar Pujara also made an unspecified contribution to the PM-CARES fund, joining the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic which has claimed over 100 lives in India.

Pujara joined skipper Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Kedar Jadhav, who are among the current set of cricketers to make significant contributions. Among former players, Sachin Tendulkar is among the most notable contributors.

Gavaskar, who is now a sought after commentator and analyst of the game, did not reveal the contribution himself but a source close to him confirmed after former Mumbai skipper Amol Mujumdar tweeted the same.

"Just heard that SMG has donated 59 lakhs towards covid relief fund. 35 to @PMCaresFunds n 24 lakhs to @CMOMaharashtra. Thumbs up superb gesture Sir," Mujumdar said.

Pujara, on his part, thanked all the front-line warriors including doctors, para medical staff, and police, who are doing selfless service at this critical juncture.

"My family & I have contributed our bit to the PM-CARES Fund and the Gujarat CM Relief Fund, and hope that you will to.

"Every single contribution counts, so let us all do our bit and together we will certainly overcome," Pujara stated.

"We would like to convey our deepest gratitude to all the front line warriors - medical professionals, police men/women, grocery staff, and so many others - for their dedication, courage and sacrifices in serving our nation and humanity," he added.

Ace shuttler and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Parupalli Kashyap also contributed Rs 3 lakh to Telangana Chief Minister's Relief Fund.

"I salute healthcare workers and emergency service providers. I hope my contribution helps them.," Kashyap tweeted.

India dismantled Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs inside three days of their first-ever day-night Test played at the Eden Gardens on Sunday. And Indian captain Virat Kohli hailed the performance given by his team.

Kohli, when called upon for post-match presentation, said: "It all started with Dada's team and we are just carrying it forward."

"Dada" is referred to Sourav Ganguly, who currently is the BCCI president.

This did not go down well with the 'Little Master' Sunil Gavaskar. He did not waste any moment to get back at him.

Sunil Gavaskar, during the post-match discussion, took a jibe on Virat Kohli and said that "I just would like to make a point that the Indian Captain said that this thing started in 2000 with Dada's team, I know Dada is the president of the BCCI so maybe you gotta say nice things about Dada. But India was also winning in the 1970s and 1980s, he wasn't born then. He was probably born in 1988-89, so he does not know,".

"A lot of people still think cricket started in 2000 or 1993 or 1995. India won in the 1970s overseas, the Indian team won in 1986 overseas (referring to 2-0 test series win against England), Indian team drew an overseas series. The Indian team also lost as other team did. But they also had a much better record from 1970 to 1988-89 than other teams," he added.

India's first away victory was in 1967-68 in New Zealand. India's bowling in the 1970s was the Indian spin quartet – Bishen Bedi, E.A.S. Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. This period also saw the emergence of two of India's best batsmen, Sunil Gavaskar and G Viswanath. Indian pitches have tended to support spin and the spin quartet exploited this to create collapses in opposing batting line-ups. These players were responsible for the back-to-back series wins in 1971 in the West Indies and England. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in the West Indian series (the one Gavaskar referred to) which is highest ever for a debut batsman.

Batting against the then West Indian lethal pacers with deadly bouncers without a helmet was a major challenge. India won the World Cup in 1983 after beating the legendary Clive Loyd's West Indies in England.

Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar were one of the key players who played and won the World cup in 1983.

Sunil Gavaskar is firstly known as the "little master". He earned this name by showing his skills, despite being of short-stature against tall strong pacers around the world.

His batting in test cricket in the 1970s and 1980s made him one of the greatest test batsman of all time.

West Indies had 4 all-time great pace bowlers in 1970s (Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner is also known as whispering death, Micheal Holdings, Andy Robert). So as Australia, England, New Zealand later years.

First to break Bradman's record, making 34 test centuries. He is the first batsman to cross the 10000+ mark in test runs.

Sunil Gavaskar contribution began right from the beginning when he helped India in a first-ever series win against West Indies.

He missed his first test due to infected fingernail.

He was the first Indian to score four centuries in that test series and second Indian after Vijay Hazare to score two centuries in one test match. He also had an average of 154.80 in the series.

The Indian cricket team indeed went on the next level by the advent of the 2000s. But true foundations were laid during the 1970s.

India were also winning before 2000, in 70s and 80s: Sunil Gavaskar reminds Virat Kohli

The time has come for India's long-serving wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni to bow out of international cricket - and he should go before he's pushed, batting great Sunil Gavaskar said.

Former captain Dhoni has been the subject of intense speculation among fans, ex-players and pundits over when he will retire from international cricket since India's semi-final exit from the World Cup.

The veteran of 350 one-dayers, who quit playing Tests at the end of 2014, has not provided any hint of what his plans are.

However, he made himself unavailable for India's tour of the West Indies and instead opted to spend 15 days with India's territorial army, a reservist force that draws on civilians who can do short stints to assist the military.

Dhoni was also a notable omission from India's Twenty20 squad for the ongoing three-match series against South Africa.

"Nobody knows what's in MSD's mind. Only he can clarify what he thinks his future with Indian cricket is," former India captain and opening batsman Gavaskar told India Today.

"But he's now 38, by the time the next T20 World Cup comes he will be over 39 years old. I think India should be looking ahead."

Dhoni captained India to the World Twenty20 crown in 2007, and the 50-over World Cup title at home four years later, and enjoys cult status in the cricket-mad country.

At his prime Dhoni was widely considered the best "finisher" in the game but his electrifying ability to put bowlers to the sword to the end of innings has waned of late, while he has also struggled to make solid starts. Dhoni's glovework, however, still remains top class.

The next 50-over World Cup is still four years away but the World Twenty20 will be held in 2020 and Dhoni enjoys unwavering support from India captain Virat Kohli who has publicly backed him on numerous occasions.

"His value to the side is always going to be fantastic. It's not just the runs he will score or the catches and the stumpings he will effect," said Gavaskar, who once held the record for most Test runs and centuries in the longest format of the game.

"His overall presence is so calming on the field, it's fantastic for the captain because the captain gets the benefit of his views. So that's a huge plus.

"But I think the time has come. Everybody has a shelf life," he added. "He should be going without being pushed out. He should be going on his own terms."

MS Dhoni should be going 'without being pushed out', says Sunil Gavaskar

List of Indian cricketers inducted in prestigious ICC Hall of Fame

India batting great Sunil Gavaskar believes England are a transformed one-day international side since their shock exit from the 2015 World Cup and rates them as favourites to win their maiden crown on home soil in July.

Eoin Morgan's side, whose quest for a first 50-overs title begins against South Africa at The Oval on May 30, top the world rankings enter the tournament as the one of the most consistent teams in the format.

"England are the favourites. Simply because of the way they are playing cricket, the complete turnaround in their cricketing attitude and approach after their disastrous 2015 World Cup," Gavaskar told Reuters in an interview.

"England have got a very good team, they have got lots of confidence. You have seen them in all the recent matches and they have been playing outstanding cricket."

Morgan's men have played a fearless brand of cricket in the recent years and since the start of 2018 have come out on top in bilateral ODI series against World Cup holders Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India.

Gavaskar believes having home advantage could also be telling after Australia won as hosts in 2015 and India did the same four years earlier.

"If you go by what has happened in the last couple of World Cups, the host team has won," he added.

"But, of course, in cricket anything can happen. While England start the favourites, there are other teams which are also playing some good cricket."

Gavaskar was speaking after pledging to sponsor 34 paediatric heart surgeries for economically deprived children at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani International Centre for Child Heart Care at the satellite city of Navi Mumbai.

The semi-rural setting was a far cry from the glamorous environs of Gavaskar's normal workplace as a TV media pundit and rather than former cricketers, he was surrounded by medical professionals who treat children for free.

His study of the game from the commentary box has convinced him that holders Australia, with Steve Smith and David Warner back in the fold after their ball-tampering bans, and a resurgent West Indies are other title contenders.

Virat Kohli's India side will also post a big challenge, the 69-year-old felt.

"I think these are the four teams that can really stand out," added former India captain and opening batsman Gavaskar, who once held the record for most test runs and centuries in the longest format.

Gavaskar said a hot English summer could add to the excitement of the World Cup as the pitches would be drier and make shot-making easier for the batsmen.

The format for the May 30-July 14 tournament has also seen a change from the previous years with all 10 teams playing each other before the top four advance to the semi-finals.

"This should be a very, very interesting tournament and I think the format is the best you can have because you are playing every team unlike in two groups," said Gavaskar, who was part of the Indian team that beat the mighty West Indies to win the 1983 World Cup.

"You can have a bogey team with whom you lose in bilateral matches but they could be in another group and you might never play them.

"So you can win without having played your bogey team (in the past) while this format, where each team plays each other, I think is the best."

Transformed England favourites to win World Cup, says Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian cricketer and present cricket commentator Sunil Gavaskar was surprised over the Rishabh Pant's exclusion from India's 15-member squad for the upcoming cricket World Cup which will take place in England and Wales.

"A bit surprised, looking at his (Pant's) form. He was batting exceptionally well, not only in the IPL but before that also. He was showing great improvement his wicket-keeping as well. He brings that left-handed option in the top-six which is very handy against the bowlers," Gavaskar told a media house.

The 33-year-old Dinesh Karthik was given the second wicketkeeper's slot over rising 21-year-old star Rishabh Pant.

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes England have a very good chance to win the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

"If you go by the history of last two or three World Cups, in 2011 the host nation India won, in 2015 host nation Australia won. In 2019, there is a very good chance that England will win the World Cup," Gavaskar said Tuesday.

Gavaskar, however, pointed out that he is not saying England will win the 50-over tournament.

Sunil Gavaskar picks England as 2019 ICC World Cup favourites

India stand to lose by boycotting Pakistan in the upcoming World Cup, feels former captain Sunil Gavaskar, who said the country can continue to "hurt them" by shunning bilateral ties.

Led by former India spinner Harbhajan Singh, calls for a complete cricketing boycott against Pakistan has grown ever since the terror attack in Pulwama last week killed more than 40 CRPF personnel. India are scheduled to play Pakistan on June 16 during the World Cup.

"Who wins if India decide against playing Pakistan in the World Cup? And I am not even talking about the semis and the finals. Who wins? Pakistan win because they get two points," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.

"India have so far beaten Pakistan every time in a World Cup, so we are actually conceding two points when by beating Pakistan, we could make sure that they don't advance in the competition.

"(But) I am with the country, whatever the government decides, I am with it totally. If the country wants we shouldn't play Pakistan, I am with them," he added.

The bilateral cricketing ties between the two countries have already been suspended since 2012 and the teams last played a full series in 2007.

"Where does it hurt Pakistan? It hurts them when they don't play a bilateral series against India. In a multi-team event, India will lose by not playing them. The entire matter needs to be looked at with a little more depth, I can understand emotions are running high.

"But what happens when you don't play them? I know India are strong enough side to qualify even after conceding those two points but why not beat them and make sure they don't qualify," argued Gavaskar.

If the BCCI takes the matter to the ICC, as is being speculated, and seeks Pakistan's ouster from event starting May 30 in England, it is more likely to lose, he said.

"They can try but it will not happen. Because the other member countries have to accept that and I don't see that happening. I am not too sure an ICC conference is the right forum," he said referring to the February 27 to March 2 ICC meetings in Dubai.

"Sure all of us are absolutely down with what has happened, it is such a tragedy but I am not too sure this would work with the ICC. The other counties will say that this is an internal matter between the two countries and they have to deal with it and not involve us."

Gavaskar urged Khan to take the necessary "first step" towards improving ties with India.

"Let me speak directly to Imran Khan, someone who I have admired so much, who I think is a friend. Let me say to Imran 'when you took over you said that it is going to be a new Pakistan'.

"You said that 'India should take the first step and Pakistan will take two steps' but not as a politician, as an average sportsperson, I want to say to you that Pakistan is the one which should take the first step.

"You ensure there is no cross-border infiltration, you ensure that those in Pakistan who are creating problems in India are handed over, if not to India, then to the UN. You take those two steps and you see the number of friendly steps India will take," he said.

Like Indo-Pak cricketers, Gavaskar wants the people of the two countries to enjoy friendly relations.

"I know many Indian and Pakistani cricketers are friends. You (Imran) are my friend, Wasim (Akram) is my friend, Ramiz (Raja) is my friend, Shoaib (Akhtar) is my friend.

We have such a good time when we meet in India or outside and I think the people of the two countries deserve that good time.

"So you take that first step. Let the Naya Pakistan take this big first step and you will see India taking a number of steps. The love and affection that Imran gets in India is unbelievable.

"He has spent a lot of time in the country. He knows the Indian people better than any other Pakistan and I do believe that he is capable of taking these steps," said Gavaskar.

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was impressed by Hardik Pandya's contribution in the third One-Day International against New Zealand. He said that Pandya's presence covers all bases for the side.

"He was very, very impressive. You know why this team management wants him in the side. He actually fills that little blank that was there. This allows the team to be balanced. He covers all the bases for the team," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"He's bowled a very good line, he has used the bouncers to very good effect. He has been like a live wire on the field. That's the plus that Hardik Pandya brings to the team. He is such an outstanding fielder. He will get you some impossible catches, get you some terrific run-outs and then with the bat and the ball, he does well," he added.

"Please leave the gentleman alone," former India captain Sunil Gavaskar said of Mahendra Singh Dhoni, insisting that the veteran's value to the team cannot be calculated despite the lack of consistency.

Dhoni turned back the clock with a match-winning half-century against Australia in the second one-dayer in Adelaide, even hitting one of those trademark last-over sixes. The well-timed knock eased the pressure he has been under due to inconsistent form.

"My prayer is to please leave the gentleman alone and he will continue to do well. He is also not getting younger. So the consistency you might have at a younger age will obviously not be there and you have to bear with that," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.

The 37-year-old two-time World Cup-winning former captain's future is one of the most debated topics in Indian cricket right now but Gavaskar feels he deserves better.

"Bear with that little inconsistency. But he's still tremendous value to the team... That value you cannot calculate at all," the batting great said.

Elaborating on what he thought makes Dhoni a crucial cog, Gavaskar said the veteran stumper's reading of the game and match situations is impeccable from behind the stumps.

"He keeps telling the bowlers to bowl a particular delivery, what a batsman is planning to do. He has a sense of what a batsman is thinking...What the batsman is looking to do now...Is he looking to get out of jail kind of shot?" he said.

"These are the kind of things where Dhoni helps the bowlers and of course with the field placing because Virat is so important in the deep (as he fields outside 30-yard circle) in the final overs when he saves those two runs diving around, takes magnificent catches in the deep," he added.

Gavaskar also spoke about the trust that current skipper Virat Kohli has Dhoni's assessment of situations.

"...It's not possible for Virat to maybe have a conversation with the bowlers or to make adjustments to the square fielders. That is where Virat has complete faith and trust in Dhoni to make those little bit of adjustments for him," Gavaskar said.

Not India's fault that Steve Smith and David Warner were not picked: Sunil Gavaskar slams critics

The utility of Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri as captain and coach must be assessed if India fail to win the next two Tests against Australia, suggested batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, who is baffled by the "selection blunders" committed by the team management.

India lost the Perth Test by 146 runs to allow the hosts level the four-match series 1-1. India went in with four specialist pacers while Australia picked spinner Nathan Lyon, who eventually tuned out to be the difference between the two sides.

Gavaskar was not impressed with the selection choices made by the team management.

"We have been seeing this - the selection blunders that have been committed since the tour of South Africa. It has cost the team because it has lost matches which could've been won if the proper selection had been made," Gavaskar said.

"They have to look at the combination of their team, look at the hole that needs to be plugged and pick the men to. If they do that then they can certainly win the next two matches but if they don't, and that too against this Australian team which does not have Steve Smith or David Warner, then the selectors need to think whether we are getting any benefit from this lot - the captain, coach and support staff, Gavaskar said.

The former opener questioned the logic for picking a jumbo squad.

"I want to find out that who has authorised 19 players to go because the next question is why not three more? The BCCI is a very rich body, it can afford to send even 40 people down there. However, I feel that an India cap, an Indian blazer has to be made a lot more valuable. ... By carrying players and taking 19 players, I do believe that the selection committee has not handled their responsibility well," he said.

"A lot of those players can come back and play domestic cricket which will not only embellish our domestic cricket, lift the standard of our domestic cricket but also give these guys, unlikely to be picked in the Test matches, an opportunity to regain form and make a case for getting back in the team," he added.

The first one on the flight back home from Perth should be India opener KL Rahul according to Gavaskar.

"He (Rahul) has no chance of playing in the remaining two Tests unless of course there is an injury to any player. I think that he should be coming back and playing Ranji Trophy for Karnataka. It is not just that he is out of form, he is just not there and you can see that. He can prove me wrong and I will be very happy to be proven wrong as long as the Indian team benefits."

It is not just that he is out of form, he is just not there and you can see that. He can prove me wrong and I will be very happy to be proven wrong as long as the Indian team benefits."

Kohli, Shastri's utility must be assessed if India do not win remaining Tests: Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has questioned the BCCI for allowing the likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni to skip domestic cricket ahead of a hectic six months culminating into the World Cup in England.

Dhawan, who was dropped from the Test team, is spending time with family in Melbourne following the T20 leg of Australia while Dhoni has had no cricket since the ODI series against the West Indies ended on November 1.

The former captain is a certainty only in the 50-over format after he was ignored for the T20s against the West Indies and Australia. He retired from Tests in 2014.

"We shouldn't ask Dhawan and Dhoni 'Why you are not playing domestic cricket?'. We should, in fact, ask the BCCI and selectors why are they allowing players to skip domestic cricket when they are not on national duty," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.

"If the Indian team has to do well, players have to be in prime form and for that they have to play cricket," he added.

Gavaskar wants the two players to compete in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, especially Dhoni, who is facing constant criticism for his waning batting form.

"He (Dhoni) didn't play the T20Is against Australia, before that he didn't play the West Indies Tests, and then he is not playing the Test series against Australia.

"So, he last played in October (November 1) and will next play in January, which is a huge gap. But if he doesn't do well on tours of Australia and New Zealand, then there will be more questions asked on his place in the World Cup.

"As you grow older and if there is a gap in your cricket, your reflexes will slow down. If you play any form of cricket at the domestic level, you get an opportunity to play long innings, which serves as a good practice for you," Gavaskar added.

'Why aren't Dhoni, Dhawan playing domestic cricket?' asks Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar has come out in support of senior Indian woman cricketer Mithali Raj in the controversy surrounding her dropping from the World T20 semifinal team, saying a player of her experience should not have been left out of the crucial match.

The 35-year-old Mithali was left out of the World T20 semi-final against England that raised quite a few eyebrows after India's eight-wicket loss. She was dropped despite scoring back-to-back fifties in the group stage of the competition held in the West Indies.

The team management cited cricketing logic -- it did not want to change a winning combination -- behind the move to drop Mithali but former skipper Gavaskar did not agree with that.

"I feel sorry for Mithali. She has a very good point. She has served Indian cricket for 20 years. She scored runs, she won player of the match in both matches (she played at the World T20)," Gavaskar told 'India Today'.

"She was injured for one game but fit for the next game. Just convert this situation into the men's game. If you had a Virat Kohli who was injured for one game and then is fit for the knockout, will you leave him out?

"You have to pick your best player for the knockouts. You needed the experience and expertise of Mithali Raj," he said.

Mithali had written a letter to the BCCI, accusing coach Ramesh Powar and Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji, saying the two are biased against her and have tried to "destroy" her.

Gavaskar said it was difficult to comment on Powar's role from a distance but made it clear that the reason given for Mithali's dropping was wrong.

"What happened with Powar. It is very difficult to comment on that from here. But it's difficult to accept whatever the reason was. They said they wanted to stick with the same team, I don't think that's a good enough excuse. You can't drop someone like Mithali Raj," said the former captain.

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar on Tuesday said that captain Virat Kohli will need wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni for the 2019 ICC World Cup.

Gavaskar opined that Dhoni's advice and experience will come in handy for Kohli in the 50-over format.

"There's no doubt about it. In 50 overs where there is that much more time, that's when MSD comes into play. You know he makes those small field adjustments, talking to the bowlers in Hindi - telling them where to bowl and what to bowl. It's a huge plus for Virat", he said.

Dhoni, who has been in poor form with the bat lately, was rested for the three-match T20I series against the Windies and Australia.

Rohit Sharma will be leading the 16-man India squad for the T20I series against the Windies in absence of Virat Kohli.

Dhoni was excluded from both the T20I squads with youngster Rishabh Pant set to don the gloves.

Chief selector MSK Prasad quickly moved to dispel talk of Dhoni's retirement, assuring fans that this was not the end for the former India captain in T20Is.

However, MSK Prasad made it a point to say that the selectors are looking at backup options behind the stumps.

"Dhoni is not going to play the 6 T20Is because we're looking at the second keeper slot. It is not the end of Dhoni in T20Is," said chief selector MSK Prasad.

Dhoni, who led India to the T20 World Cup title in 2007, has scored 1,487 T20I runs at an average of 37.17 and a strike-rate of 127.90.

Kohli needs MS Dhoni in 2019 World Cup, says Sunil Gavaskar

As Virat Kohli and company is gearing up for the all-important tour to England for the Test series post IPL, Kohli is a relieved man for the time being. After all he was able to salvage some pride in recent Test series in South Africa.

Last month, when India lost the second Test match at the Centurion against South Africa, Kohli must have told himself 'come what may, the series scoreline will not be 3-0'. After all, the last Test of the series was slated at Johannesburg, the place which has that special bonhomie with Team India for many years. The record remained intact; India not only avoided a defeat but won the Test.

India has never lost a Test here, not even in 1992-93 and 1996-97 when otherwise there was complete decimation. At this ground, Rahul Dravid scored an epic 148 in 1996-97. But above all it's here in 2007 that India won inaugural T-20 World Cup and MS Dhoni embarked upon a journey to superstardom.

But this is not new, in cricket special relationships between teams/players and grounds have been around since ages, albeit most of the time they are inexplicable.

Have a look at few of such unique relationships.

During Sunil Gavaskar's debut series in 1971-72, India played two Test matches at Port of Spain. In four innings, Gavaskar scored one double century, one century and two half-centuries. Five years later at the same venue, India played two Test matches and Gavaskar scored two more centuries. So whenever there used to a Test at Port of Spain, bowlers of West Indies knew that little master would come with something special.

But even more interesting is the camaraderie between Mohd Azharuddin and Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Azhar made his debut at Kolkata in 1984-75 and scored a century on debut and his special performance at Kolkata continued after that as well. Overall, Azhar played seven Test matches at this ground and scored five centuries. Eden Gardens played a role of saviour for him. In 1993, when Azhar was under heavy scrutiny, both for his batting and captaincy, he scored a massive run-a-ball 182 in opening Test of the series with England. India won the Test as well. In 1996, Azhar scored a Test century here against South Africa in just 74 balls. The crowd went berserk when Azhar struck five boundaries in a single over of Lance Klusener.

Little do we realise that Dilip Vengsarkar has a unique record under his belt. He was first non-English batsman to score three Test centuries at the iconic Lord's. During his first three Test matches at the 'Mecca of Cricket', Vengsarkar scored centuries in each of them. He played his fourth and last Test at this venue in 1990 and scored a half-century.

VVS Laxman's love affair with Sydney Cricket Ground started in 1999-2000 when he played a magnum knock of 167 in a series where Indian batsmen simply capitulated against Australian pace attack. He scored centuries on his next two Test outings at this ground in 2004 and 2008.

Like Johannesburg, Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Australia has been very special for Team India. At SCG, India scored a mammoth 600 for 4 during 1985-86 and Australia somehow saved the innings defeat on last day. India was so dominating that after first day's play, India's score was 334 for 1 and first three batsmen scored centuries. In 1991-92 India lost five Test series in Australia by 4-0. The only Test they could save was the one played at Sydney. Ravi Shastri scored a double century and Sachin Tendulkar scored a century. At SCG only in 2003-04, India scored 700 plus, riding on a double century by Tendulkar and century by Laxman. It was last Test match of legendary Steve Waugh and India almost defeated Australia in this Test.

I wrap up this discussion with something very interesting. Some relationships thrive spontaneously and some don't click even after someone vies for them desperately.

Sunil Gavaskar's wife belongs to Kanpur. Gavaskar always wanted to score a Test century at Kanpur in front of his in-laws. Ironically he failed in his first eight Test outings there. It was in his ninth Test at Kanpur in 1986-87 during fag end of this career, Gavaskar could score a century there. He was a relieved man.

These tales of typical relationships are beyond explanation but they are immensely interesting. As interesting and alluring as the game of cricket itself is.

Sunil Gavaskar remembers MS Dhoni as India's batting line fails against South Africa

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar today questioned India's team selection for the second cricket Test against South Africa, saying opener Shikhar Dhawan's "head is always on the chopping board".

India made three changes to their playing XI, with KL Rahul replacing Shikhar Dhawan and Ishant Sharma coming in for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose three-wicket burst in the first morning of the opening Test rocked the hosts.
Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha was ruled out due to a strain and Parthiv Patel was included is his place.

Gavaskar said: "I think Shikhar Dhawan is the 'Bali ka Bakra' (scapegoat). His head is always on the chopping board. He just needs one bad innings and he is out of the team.

"I also don't understand why Ishant came in for Bhuvneshwar when he had taken three wickets on the opening day at Cape Town. Ishant could have replaced Shami or Bumrah but leaving him out, I don't understand."
India were thrashed by 72 runs in the first Test against South Africa at Cape Town.

Virat Kohli's men had folded for 135 in their second innings while chasing 208 to win the Test.

Gavaskar questions India's team selection for 2nd Test

“Records are meant to be broken” – Ace swimmer Mark Spitz quoted this once. Spitz created history by winning seven gold medals in single Olympic in 1972. This record held ground for good 36 years. In 2008, Michael Phelps broke this in 2008.

Some records are so ahead of their times that it takes a long time for someone to surpass them. In the 1968 Mexico Olympic, Bob Beamon set a World Record in Long Jump when he leaped 8.90 meters and surpassed the previous record by staggering 55 cms. It took someone 23 years to go past Beamon’s act.

In 1986, Viv Richards scored the fastest Test century. He did this using 56 balls; 11 balls less than the then prevailing record. It took 30 years for someone to surpass this. This month one such record in Test Cricket would complete three decades and it is still unchallenged.

In January 1988, Indian Leg-Spinner Narendra Hirwani (then 19 years old) claimed 16 wickets in his debut Test match against West Indies at Madras (now Chennai). His match figure of 16 for 136 runs remains world-record for the best match figure in Test on debut and also it is best ever figure in a Test match by an Indian bowler.

In 1987-88, West Indies played a Four Test series in India. It was a significant series in a sense that it was India’s first Test series after legendary Sunil Gavaskar took retirement.

India sans Sunil Gavaskar was up against a strong side under the new captain Dilip Vengsarkar. West Indies under the captaincy of Viv Richards was a formidable side.

India lost the first Test in Delhi and next two Test matches ended in a draw. The last test of the series was slated in Madras during 11-15 January 2018. Vengsarkar and the ace spinner Maninder Singh were ruled out for this Test due to injury. Ravi Shastri led the team at Madras and India fielded three debutants; Ajay Sharma and WV Raman were the other two apart from Narendra Hirwani.

During the one of the tour game of the same series, Hirwani played for the U-25 team against West Indies. He was impressive and took a 5 wicket haul. Fresh in memory, thus, when Maninder Singh got injured, Hirwani was picked.

India batted first and scored 382 runs. In response, and at the end of second day’s play, West Indies were around 150 runs on the board for five wickets. Hirwani claimed three out of those five wickets. In fact, at the close of 2nd day’s play, the Test was fairly poised for both the teams.

However, at the start of the third day, things turned dramatically on an underprepared and deteriorating track. The turning point came when well settled Richards failed to read a googly from Hirwani and got clean bowled. Hell broke loose after this. West Indies lost its remaining four wickets in no time; all claimed by Hirwani.

India declared their second innings on the fourth day and set a target of 416 for West Indies in fourth innings. Hirwani struck again and batsmen were just clueless. West Indies were wrapped up in 42nd over on fourth day itself. India won the match by a huge margin of 255 runs with one day to spare.

Hirwani match figure was 16 for 136, which still is a world record for best bowling figures on debut. It is an all-time Indian record for match Test match figure. When Kumble took all 10 wickets in an innings in 1999, even he ended with a match haul of 14 wickets.

The Madras Test was the first and last Test for Ravi Shastri as the captain. Shastri, thus, finished with 100% Test captaincy record. Hirwani next three Test matches were against New Zealand in home series during the end of 1988, in which he took 20 wickets. Therefore, after first four Test matches, Narendra Hirwani had staggering 36 wickets against his name. But quickly he rose, more quickly he fizzled. His performance nose dove. He became an easy pick for the batman largely because he was slow in the air. Narendra Hirwani finished his career with just 17 Test matches and he could add an abysmal 18 wickets in last 13 Test matches.

Notwithstanding what sort of career Hirwani could make for himself, what he did in Madras 30 years back was mercurial and no short of a miraculous performance. This certainly is one of the records which have been lasting for insanely long.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to take cognisance of Australian skipper Steve Smith seeking dressing room help for a DRS call.

Former India captains have called on cricket authorities to investigate Australia skipper Steve Smith amid allegations his team flouted the rules of the game when deciding whether to review decisions during the second test.

Incensed India captain Virat Kohli accused Smith of 'crossing the line' on day four of the Bangalore match on Tuesday when he was given out lbw and looked toward the players' area in the stands when deciding whether to review the verdict using the Decision Review System.

Players are not allowed to seek direction apart from conferring with the non-striker.

Smith said it had been a one-off incident caused by a "brain fade" but Kohli countered that it was not the only time it had happened and that he had complained to the match officials.

"I don't think that was in the spirit of the game. We have to see what the ICC and match referee do," Gavaskar told local broadcaster NDTV.

"I have not seen other earlier incidents but I saw it clearly when Smith did that today, he was clearly gesturing to the dressing room."

Sourav Ganguly, who captained India from 2000-05, also demanded authorities "take action".

"The umpires and match referee must ensure this doesn’t happen in future," he told Indian broadcaster Aaj Tak.

Peter Handscomb, who was at the non-striker's end during the incident, tweeted after the 75-run defeat that he was to blame.

"I referred smudga (Smith) to look at the box... my fault and was unaware of the rule. Shouldn't take anything away from what was an amazing game!" he wrote.

Michael Clarke, Smith's predecessor as captain, said he had concerns about the actions of his former team mate.

"I want to find out from the Australian team if they're using the DRS in that way, if they are then that is unacceptable," Clarke told TV station India Today.

"The fact that Peter Handscomb is even thinking about telling the Australian captain to turn around and look to the support staff, I've got my concerns."

The DRS storm capped a tense and sometimes ill-tempered match, with a number of heated verbal exchanges prompting interventions from the umpires to calm players down.

Kohli's accusations and any action taken by the ICC are bound to reverberate in coming days, with the four-match series locked at 1-1 before the third test in Ranchi next week.

Australian media likened the controversy to the infamous Sydney Cricket Ground test in 2008, which soured relations between the teams for a number of years.

The Anil Kumble-captained Indians threatened to abandon the series after bowler Harbhajan Singh was found guilty of racially abusing Australia's Andrew Symonds, a conviction that was later overturned.

After Australia won the tense match on day five, Kumble said: "Only one team is playing in the spirit of the game."

After being given lbw, Smith is accused of conferring -- on whether the decision should be reviewed -- with the Australian dressing room
