Steve Smith says he is still traumatised by the infamous "Sandpapergate" ball-tampering scandal in 2018, but the former Australia skipper is undaunted about returning to South Africa for his first Test series since. The prolific batsman was sent home in disgrace, banned for a year and sacked as captain after conspiring to alter the ball using sandpaper during the third Test in Cape Town eight years ago.David Warner, considered the ringleader, was suspended for 12 months and stripped of all leadership roles while Cameron Bancroft was slapped with a nine-month ban. Also Read - Auqib Nabi earns maiden ODI call-up; Mayank returns for WI T20Is| check squadsSmith, preparing for the first Test in Durban on October 9 before the series moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town, said he still suffers flashbacks to a traumatic period of his life.He is haunted by memories of leaving Johannesburg airport, with cameras clicking furiously around him, and a harrowing Sydney press conference on his return when he broke down in tears."I'm not a big fan of cameras ... I get anxious around cameras to be honest," he told News Corp. in an interview published Thursday."That was a traumatic experience in my life and when I hear the flash of a camera it makes me revisit that in a way."The 24-48 hours of being told by James Sutherland (then-Cricket Australia chief executive) that I was getting banned for a year. That and going through the airport in Johannesburg getting absolutely mobbed, and then flying back and doing that press conference."I still have little flashbacks here and there of it."Smith bore the brunt of the scandal that is considered one of Australian sport's darkest moments, but bounced back emphatically. He smashed a superb century against England on his return and has gone from strength to strength, with 10,920 Test runs so far at an average of 56."It was certainly a difficult period, particularly the initial period a few days after," he said."The mental state I was in was not great. That's somewhere I'd like not to get to again, but I certainly learned from that and have been able to move forward with my life."I've tried to kind of erase a lot of 2018 and what happened," he added."I can't remember a lot about the series. Smith, preparing for the first Test in Durban on October 9 before the series moves to Gqeberha and Cape Town, said he still suffers flashbacks to a traumatic period of his life.

Steve Smith says he is still traumatised by the infamous "Sandpapergate" ball-tampering scandal in 2018, but the former Australia skipper is undaunted about returning to South Africa for his first Test series since. The prolific batsman was sent home in disgrace, banned for a year and sacked as captain after conspiring to alter the ball using sandpaper during the third Test in Cape Town eight years ago. David Warner, considered the ringleader, was suspended for 12 months and stripped of all leadership roles while Cameron Bancroft was slapped with a nine-month ban. He is haunted by memories of leaving Johannesburg airport, with cameras clicking furiously around him, and a harrowing Sydney press conference on his return when he broke down in tears. "I'm not a big fan of cameras ... I get anxious around cameras to be honest," he told News Corp. in an interview published Thursday. "That was a traumatic experience in my life and when I hear the flash of a camera it makes me revisit that in a way. "The 24-48 hours of being told by James Sutherland (then-Cricket Australia chief executive) that I was getting banned for a year. That and going through the airport in Johannesburg getting absolutely mobbed, and then flying back and doing that press conference. "I still have little flashbacks here and there of it." Smith bore the brunt of the scandal that is considered one of Australian sport's darkest moments, but bounced back emphatically. He smashed a superb century against England on his return and has gone from strength to strength, with 10,920 Test runs so far at an average of 56. "It was certainly a difficult period, particularly the initial period a few days after," he said. "The mental state I was in was not great. That's somewhere I'd like not to get to again, but I certainly learned from that and have been able to move forward with my life. "I've tried to kind of erase a lot of 2018 and what happened," he added. "I can't remember a lot about the series. I've tried to block most of it out of my memory bank." Smith has been back to South Africa for a white-ball series since 2018, but not for a Test and he is bracing for hostile crowds.
Cummins calls Smith ‘better’ than Bradman
Steve Smith, Australia’s stand-in captain for the fifth Ashes Test at the SCG, averages close to 56 in the whites and is looked up to by many as Australia’s greatest Test batter since Don Bradman. Although the disparity in their Test averages is massive, with Bradman’s reading 99.94, the highest ever by any batter in Test cricket, the quality both possess and possessed shall not be questioned. Smith is Australia’s best Test batter of the past decade, and his accolades speak for themselves. Steve Smith doesn’t age, but even when he does, he does it like a fine wine. Meanwhile, Australia began day three with Head and night watchman Michael Neser taking strides. Following Neser’s dismissal on 24 off Brydon Carse, the English seamer accounted for Usman Khawaja, playing his last Test, soon after on 17. Keeper-batter Alex Carey departed next on 16 before Cameron Green, and Smith added 71 for the seventh wicket, with Smith completing his record hundred in the meantime. All-rounder Green got out on 37, with Smith and Beau Webster seeing off the remaining overs. Earlier, Smith’s opponent and another batting giant, England’s Joe Root, slammed his 41st Test hundred in the first inning, his second of this summer Down Under, also making this the first-ever occasion when the two struck hundreds in the same match. With two days remaining and the hosts sitting in the driver’s seat, it would require a monumental effort from the visitors to come back into this game and win it, ensuring they are ending this series (2-3).

Alex Carey would retain his place as the gloveman, with Australia to play either Josh Inglis or Webster, with Green remaining an integral part of the playing XI. On the bowling front, Starc and Boland would start, with the hosts having plenty of options to choose from as the first-change bowler. While Richardson leads the race, Neser’s all-round attributes could also see him push for his case. In Nathan Lyon’s absence, Murphy would get a game at a venue likely to favour spin at some point in the game.

In three contested matches in the ongoing Ashes, the left-handed Khawaja scored 153 runs, averaging just over 30.

It was a poor start for hosts Australia on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test. English bowlers were on song in the first session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Having opted to bowl first after winning the toss, the decision by Ben Stokes proved right as Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson enjoyed their outing by breaking the back of Australia’s batting order. However, it was the wicket of Australia’s stand-in skipper Steve Smith that caught the eye, which was the highlight reel at Tea on Day 1.

Smith stunned on Boxing Day
Asked to bat first, Australia were never in control of the situation and lost wickets at regular intervals in the opening session as they closed at 72/4 at the break. However, it was a delivery from Tongue that caught the eye in the opening session at the MCG. On the second ball of the 20th over, an in-swinging delivery from Tongue stunned Smith as it broke the defense of the Aussie stand-in skipper. Australia cruised to an emphatic eight-wicket win over England in the day-night second Ashes Test in Brisbane on Sunday for an ominous 2-0 lead in the series. Set a paltry target of 65 for victory, Australia captain Steve Smith pulled Gus Atkinson for a huge six over square leg to get the job done in style. Although not as humiliating as the two-day loss in the first Test at Perth, England were comprehensively outplayed in every department. Australia are now overwhelming favourites to retain the Ashes with matches in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney to follow. "Great day. First two days were pretty even, game turned when we were able to extend to get the new ball under lights, that was crucial for us," said Smith, who clashed verbally with England bowler Jofra Archer as the hosts raced to victory. "It can be tricky with the pink ball, it changes really quickly and you have to adapt." For England it was more misery. Their batting, apart from Joe Root and Zak Crawley in the first innings and captain Ben Stokes and Will Jacks in the second, was just as rash as in Perth. They gave their wickets away with poor strokes on the bouncy Gabba surface. They also bowled poorly, pitching too short and wasting the new pink ball, in stark contrast to an Australian attack missing spearheads Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood. To make matters worse England dropped five catches in the first innings, whereas Australia's fielders caught everything that came their way. Josh Inglis's brilliant run-out of Stokes in the first innings changed the course of the match. "Obviously very disappointing," said Stokes. "I think a lot of it comes down to not being able to stand up to the pressure of this game, this format, when the game is on the line." England were behind the game once they let Australia's tail help the home side post 511 on Saturday, an overall lead of 177. They then lost six second-innings wickets under lights to end the third day 134-6, still 43 runs behind the Australian total. While many expected England to surrender meekly on Sunday, Stokes and all-rounder Jacks led a fighting rearguard action to ensure Australia had to bat a second time. Stokes and Jacks defied the Australian pace attack on a fiercely hot day to edge their way past the initial deficit target and begin to set Australia something to chase. Flicker of resistance England batting coach Marcus Trescothick said Saturday his batsmen would not change their aggressive approach, despite a clatter of wickets from poor shots. But Stokes and Jacks were patient during the first session Sunday. They left balls they didn't need to play and seemed happy to take their runs in singles rather than expansive boundary shots. They scored just 28 runs in the first hour and passed the 43-run deficit 96 minutes into the session, scoring only 59 runs in the two hours. The Australian bowlers, who ran rampant under lights on Saturday with the pink ball, were far more ineffective on Sunday, despite the wicket beginning to play some tricks. The English offered only one chance when Scott Boland squared up Stokes, who got a thick edge over the slips cordon. They continued to frustrate the Australians in the second session until just before the drinks break Jacks got an edge to Michael Neser and Smith snared a breath-taking catch at slip, diving full length to his left and catching it low to the ground. Neser struck again in the next over when Stokes nibbled at a ball outside the off-stump and got a fine edge to keeper Alex Carey to leave England 227-8, a lead of exactly 50. Atkinson, Brydon Carse and Archer offered no real resistance as Neser recorded career-best figures of 5-42. Sixty-five was never going to be enough and although Australia lost Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne in the chase, Smith and Jake Weatherald guided the home side to an easy win. "A great game of cricket, very clinical," said Inglis, who was born in England. "Timing is a big thing in pink-ball cricket, when you're batting and bowling." Ashes 2025-26: Australia crush England by eight wickets, lead series 2-0

Sports are all about learning from something or someone and getting better at your job, and Australia’s stand-in captain Steve Smith has taken a step forward in doing so from one of Test cricket’s greats, but differently. On the eve of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba in Brisbane, Smith revealed how West Indian legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul entered into Smith’s process of improving his batting average in Pink-Ball Tests. Although Smith doesn’t need batting tips to stay at the top, he needed inspiration from one of Chanderpaul’s gears, which he will also don under the lights against England. Smith made headlines in the lead-up to the Gabba Test by wearing anti-glare tapes under his eyes, something Chanderpaul used to do during his playing days.
So, what does that do, and how would it help any batter?
The eye blacks, small strips worn on the cheekbones, are designed to reduce glare from floodlights by absorbing it, which otherwise would reflect off the skin, making it difficult for a batter to concentrate. Although barring Chanderpaul, none of the players wore it during previous Day/Night games, Smith admits asking him about its effects and also the right way to wear them. "I actually messaged Shivnarine Chanderpaul and asked him what his thoughts were, whether he wore the chalk or the strips," Smith said. "He said the strips, and he thinks it blocks out 65% of the glare. And he also said, 'I've seen photos, and you're wearing them the wrong way'. So yesterday I put them on the right way. “I agree with him. I think it certainly stops the glare. Yeah, I'll be wearing them.”
The whole mantra is to get better
Smith is not known for scoring big in Pink-Ball Tests, averaging just above 37 (37.04), including one hundred, compared to his magnificent batting average in day matches (58.31 with 35 hundreds). Admitting how tough it gets to score under the lights and against the pink ball, Smith said, "It's hard to bat all the time. It's a tricky one. The ball reacts obviously differently to a red one. It can change quickly. It can start moving randomly. "You've got to try and play what's in front of you at that time, and when it does shift on you, and the ball starts doing something different, you've got to try and come up with plans to counter that, whether it be more aggressive, whether it be going to your shell and trying to get through that period. Everyone's different. It's trying to be one step ahead when it does start to shift,” he continued. Meanwhile, Smith-led Australia won the series opener in Perth inside two days, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
