Mohammed Shami faced the axe in Team India’s 15-man squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, starting September 9 in the UAE. The right-arm pacer was India’s highest wicket-taker in the Champions Trophy (9), but a flop IPL 2025 forced the selectors to look beyond him for the recently concluded England Tests. His form and fitness became a worry for him and the selection committee, which continues to ignore him for the international calendar. Veteran seamer Mohammed Shami unleashed a fierce attack after several reports indicated that his inclusion in India's forthcoming tour of England hinges on his ability to bowl steady spells, and a few even suggested his near-future retirement.
Shami hasn't bowled for India in the whites since the World Test Championship final against Australia in 2023, where Australia won by 209 runs. A long injury layoff kept Shami out of action after the 2023 ODI World Cup.
He even came back to the domestic circuit and played in the Ranji Trophy for West Bengal. With his experience, Shami had a bountiful outing and came back with seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh in 2024. Rumour mill talked about his comeback during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia; yet, the series passed, and there was no indication of him.

Shami fires back

The 34-year-old has bowled the new ball for India across formats in 2025, representing the nation in the title-winning Champions Trophy campaign and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League.
Regardless of his increased frequency of appearance, reports suggested that Shami's contribution for England would be contingent on his ability to deal with the requirements of the format, starting from June 20. Reports hinted otherwise towards Shami going through the same route towards Test retirement like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Shami broke the silence and responded strongly to the claim. He posted a screenshot of the article on Instagram with a seething message, "Very well done. Also, start counting the days left to say 'adieu' to your job, then see ours later. People like you have ruined our future. Try saying nice things sometimes, too. Today's worst story, sorry."
Shami has played 64 Tests for India and taken 229 wickets at an average of 27.1, with six five-wicket hauls.

Following the Superintendent of Police's orders under sections 308(4) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) 2023 and sections 66d and 66e of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act, 2008, the FIR was registered on Monday (May 5), the day when SRH was scheduled to host Delhi Capitals in IPL 2025 league game. Shami, however, was restricted to the bench for this particular game. Having played nine matches for SRH this season, Shami picked just six wickets, averaging an embarrassing 56.17 and having an economy of 11.23. Shami, however, led India’s pace attack in premier seamer Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the last ICC event – Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai, returning with nine wickets from five matches, including a five-for against Bangladesh. He spearheaded the pace attack and helped India lift its record third Champions Trophy title, second in successive years. Head coach Gautam Gambhir received threat earlier Not only Shami but Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir also received a similar death threat last month. The Delhi Police is said to be investigating the case, and Gambhir remains under police protection. "We have been informed about an alleged threat mail received on an email ID associated with Gautam Gambhir. The matter is being investigated. Gautam Gambhir is already under Delhi Police protection, and we do not comment on specific security arrangements," said DCP (Central) V. Harsha Vardhan. "As we spoke, please find below the 'Threat Mails' received on the mail ID of Mr Gautam Gambhir (Ex-MP), Head Coach, Indian Cricket Team. Kindly register the FIR accordingly and ensure the safety and security of the family," Gambhir wrote PS to Rajender Nagar SHO and DCP, Central. Meanwhile, Gambhir and Shami will team up for India’s next international assignment, an away tour of England, starting June 20 in Leeds. The squad announcement for the five-match marquee Test series is expected sometime in the second week of May.

“Injuries are part and parcel of a fast bowler’s life. My recovery took 14 months, and it wasn’t easy, especially given the challenges I faced during my domestic career. That, along with the England series, helped me rebuild my confidence.” Shami said while speaking exclusively on JioHotstar’s “Gen Gold” series.

Former Test greats Tim Southee and Vernon Philander have backed Mohammed Shami’s plea to the ICC to revoke the ban on saliva usage in international cricket. After India’s four-wicket win over Australia in the Champions Trophy semis, Shami said as a seamer, he always tries to make the old ball talk, but because the ICC has barred them from using saliva, it makes it tougher for the quicks to reverse the ball, especially on batting friendly pitches.
"We are trying [to get reverse swing], but the usage of saliva on the ball is not allowed," Shami said.
"We keep appealing that we should be allowed to use saliva so that we can bring reverse swing back into the game, and it becomes interesting," he added.
The ban on using saliva to polish the ball first came into place five years ago in May 2020, when the apex body barred everyone from using it to avoid the spread of COVID-19 infection. Although that began as a temporary measure, the ICC made this ban permanent in September 2022.

India’s pace spearhead at the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 has urged the ICC to reconsider revoking this ban, with former seamers jumping on to back him.
"That was a rule brought around Covid with the virus going around the world, but I think as a bowler, you want to have a slight advantage," Southee said on ESPNcricinfo's Match Day.
"We see the game going the way it's going and seeing sides score 362, and more often than not over 300 in this format. I think there needs to be something in the bowlers' favour, and whether that's a little bit of saliva, then yeah, I don't see why they couldn't afford to get that back in,” he continued.

Reverse swing would have helped Proteas

On the other hand, Philander also spoke in Shami’s favour, saying that had reverse swing been in place during the ongoing tournament, it would have helped South African seamers in the semis tie (against New Zealand), which they lost by 50 runs.

"If we look at the state of that ball, I mean towards the back end, it was really scuffed up, and I think had you used the saliva [to polish one side of the ball], the element of the reverse swing might have come into play," Philander said.
"So, it certainly does play a part. You can get it to shine up and you use the elements to swing it a little longer.
"I'd like to see that element being brought back into the game because I think it's needed as well. Test greats back Shami’s plea to revoke saliva ban for ‘reverse swing’

India’s pace spearhead, Mohammed Shami, has openly acknowledged that playing all their Champions Trophy matches at a single venue in Dubai has worked to their advantage.
Shami played a crucial role in India's four-wicket win over Australia in the semi-finals on Tuesday, with figures of 3/48 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Following the match, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, dismissed criticism that the team’s consistent presence at the same venue was unfair. Due to political tensions, India refused to travel to host nation Pakistan, playing all their matches in Dubai instead—where they have remained unbeaten in the tournament.
The final, set for Sunday (March 9), will also be held in Dubai, with India facing New Zealand. Meanwhile, the other seven teams in the competition have had to travel between three Pakistani cities and the UAE.
Shami admitted that the familiarity with conditions had benefited India. “It definitely helped us because we know the conditions and the behavior of the pitch,” Shami said after the match. “It’s a plus point that we’re playing all the matches at one venue.”
The tournament’s hybrid model led to logistical issues, including South Africa having to travel to Dubai before returning to Pakistan within 24 hours without playing a game. India’s strong record in Dubai continues, with nine wins in their last ten ODIs at the venue.

Shami calls for saliva ban reversal

Shami, 34, has been in fine form, having taken a five-wicket haul in India’s opening match against Bangladesh. However, he voiced concerns about the lasting impact of the ICC’s saliva ban, which was made permanent in 2022 after being initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“We are trying to reverse the ball, but without saliva, it’s not as effective,” Shami said. “We are constantly appealing to allow the use of saliva again—it would make reverse swing more interesting.”
Fast bowlers traditionally use saliva to shine one side of the ball, which aids in generating late movement, particularly in the latter stages of an ODI. Currently, they are only permitted to use sweat.
After briefly leaving the field in India’s win over Pakistan, Shami has since dispelled any doubts about his fitness. He has bowled his full quota of 10 overs in consecutive matches, reinforcing his ability to deliver long spells.
“I am working on regaining my rhythm and contributing more to the team,” Shami stated. “I am ready to bowl long spells whenever required.”
Meanwhile, head coach Gambhir lauded Shami’s performance and dedication. “He’s a world-class performer,” Gambhir said. “The hunger he brings, the way he trains, the way he practices—that’s why he delivers these results.”

Champions Trophy | ‘Familiar conditions have helped us’: Shami on India’s Dubai success

Aussie skipper Steve Smith top scored for his team against India in the Champions Trophy semi-final on Mar 4, but his dismissal was rather a lame one. After being on the crease for 95 deliveries and scoring 73 runs, Smith missed a juicy full-toss ball from Shami on the stumps and was clean-bowled.
The wicket came in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. The dismissal, which came with Australia two short of 200, sparked a little collapse as the Kangaroos were bowled out for 264 in 49.3 overs. Have a look at the dismissal below:

Smith had survived a close call in the 14th over as well when the ball, after he defended, rolled back to hit the stumps, but the bails didn't dislodge.

Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first against India. The decision was proven wrong quickly as Mohammed Shami dismissed Cooper Connolly for a duck off nine balls.
Travis Head, India's nemesis in recent ICC tournaments, then took on the India attack and especially Shami as he hit the bowler for four fours in an over.
Rohit then did what former spinner Ravi Ashwin had advised on his YouTube channel a day prior to the match. The skipper handed the ball to mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, and he dismissed Head on the very first ball.
Australia finished the first powerplay of 10 overs at 63/2 with Head making 39 off them off just 33 balls, including five fours and two sixes. At the half-way mark of the innings, i.e., 25 overs, Australia were 125/3 with Smith looking fluent.
For India, Shami was the pick of the bowlers with the figures of 3/48, while Ravindra Jadeja and Varun Chakaravarthy chipped in with two wickets each.

Champions Trophy, India vs Australia: The wicket came against the run of play in the 37th over at a time when Australia were looking good for a score of 300. Cricket Sports

During Friday’s practice session, Arshdeep bowled 13 overs at full intensity under the supervision of bowling coach Morne Morkel, while Shami, who recently returned from a long injury layoff, bowled only 6-7 overs with a restricted run-up and wasn’t operating at full throttle.

Shami had received treatment on his right leg during the Pakistan match on February 23, shortly after completing his third over. Given this, the team management may opt to rest him ahead of the crucial semi-finals.
While KL Rahul, in his media interaction, was uncertain about making changes to the winning combination, assistant coach Ryan Doeschate hinted that the bowling lineup might see some alterations.

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has acknowledged that it's been really hard for ace wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant to be watching the ongoing Champions Trophy matches from the sidelines but that's the nature of sport at this level.
Pant has not been a part of the playing XI in the last two group games, with India handing over the wicket-keeping duties to KL Rahul, who has performed remarkably well behind the stumps and provided solidity to the middle order.
"It's been very hard on Rishabh not playing. But that's the nature of sport at this level, Doeschate told reporters on Friday, when asked if having two quality keepers has been a good dilemma.
"KL has been good. He didn't get many chances... We've got to keep Rishabh up and running. We never know when we're going to need him. But certainly to have two wicket-keepers of that calibre is a nice thing to have." Doeschate admitted that Sunday's match against New Zealand could be a contest of spin between the two sides.

Champions Trophy: Shami likely to be rested against NZ; Arshdeep to replace him- Reports

Former England pacer Darren Gough expects India to rest Mohammed Shami and bring in another spinner in the playing XI for the Champions Trophy. The comments were made on the back of India's win against Pakistan on Feb 23 in Dubai. India and New Zealand are the two teams through to the top four from Group A with Bangladesh and hosts Pakistan knocked out.
"They probably should rest him. They've got the confidence against Pakistan. When you've got a batting lineup like that, you can afford to bring someone else in; bring another spinner in Dubai," Gough told news outlet Hindustan Times during an interaction on the sidelines of the International Masters League (IML).

"The pitch is not as flat as in Lahore, so you can bring another spinner. We saw Hardik Pandya bowling brilliantly, so I would expect India to rest him," Gough further added.
Shami, in the two matches played during the Champions Trophy, has blown hot and cold. He took 5/53 in the first game against Bangladesh while going wicketless against Pakistan in the second match after bowling a record five wides in an 11-ball first over.
Shami has been recently included in the team following his comeback post a long rehabilitation journey. The bowler joined the team in January during the England T20Is and ODIs ahead of the Champions Trophy.
Prior to that, he had last played in the ODI World Cup Final on Nov 19, 2023, against Australia. Shami hurt his ankle in the final and missed out T20 World Cup which India won, as well as the away Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia which India lost.
With Jasprit Bumrah out for the ICC tournament with an injury, Shami was in the limelight for his experience and ability to lead the pace attack which comprises two youngsters - Harshit Rana and Arshdeep Singh - apart from him.

Ace Indian seamer Mohammad Shami bowled five wides in his 11-ball first over against Pakistan in Dubai in the Champions Trophy, becoming the first-ever from the country to bowl as many wides in a single over in One Dayers. Unlike how he began in the tournament opener against Bangladesh at the same venue, having picked a wicket in his first over, the right-arm seamer bowled wayward this time, giving away free runs to Pakistan.
Up until now, several Indian bowlers had bowled four wides in an over, including ex-India quick Zaheer Khan, who did it four times (twice against Sri Lanka in 2012 and twice during the 2003 ODI World Cup), and RP Singh, who bowled it twice. Laxmipathy Balaji and Irfan Pathan are the other two seamers who once held this unwanted record.

Coming around the wicket to Imam-ul-Haq, who walked in as a replacement for injured Fakhar Zaman, Shami bowled a couple of them on the leg side before going wide from the batter on the offside, keeping keeper KL Rahul busy behind the stumps. Although he bowled 11 balls, Shami conceded just six runs.

While Pakistan made just one forced change to their playing XI, India played the winning combination in their second match. Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan won the toss and elected to bat first, with a new opening pair attracting all eyeballs.
Following a steady start, star batter Babar Azam opened his arms against Harshit Rana, driving two beautiful-looking shots on either side. Babar looked in ominous touch, taking on Hardik Pandya on the offside. Before he departed for a well-made 23 off 26 (to Pandya, caught behind), he came down the track to Axar Patel, hitting him over long-on for a boundary, much to cheers from thousands of Pakistani fans in attendance.

After India broke the partnership, Axar Patel’s direct throw in the next over (off Kuldeep Yadav) accounted for Imam, who fell shy of his crease, getting out on 10.
Meanwhile, Shami, who left the field with concerns around his leg inside the Powerplay, returned after its completion.

Cricket, Sports: Previously, several Indian bowlers had bowled four wides in an over in ODIs, but none five, and Mohammed Shami broke this record against Pakistan.

Mohammed Shami becomes the FIRST Indian to bowl 5 wide balls in an over in ODIs. 5 - Mohammed Shami v PAK, TODAY 4 - Zaheer Khan v AUS, 2003 4 - Zaheer Khan v NETH, 2003 4 - L Balaji v SL, 2004 4 - RP Singh v AUS, 2007 4 - RP Singh v BAN, 2008 4 - Zaheer Khan v SL, 2012 4 -… pic.twitter.com/ek252kybrp — Kausthub Gudipati (@kaustats) February 23, 2025 Also read | Champions Trophy: Rawalpindi forecast for PAK-BAN game piles pressure on Pakistan ahead of India face-off Coming around the wicket to Imam-ul-Haq, who walked in as a replacement for injured Fakhar Zaman, Shami bowled a couple of them on the leg side before going wide from the batter on the offside, keeping keeper KL Rahul busy behind the stumps. Although he bowled 11 balls, Shami conceded just six runs. Even Stevens in the PP While Pakistan made just one forced change to their playing XI, India played the winning combination in their second match.
