Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami has confirmed that he is 100% pain-free now and wishes to play for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy to get match-ready for the Australia Tour that begins on November 22.

Out with an ankle injury since the home ODI World Cup last year, Shami bowled full throttle at the M Chinnaswamy in Bengaluru on Sunday (Oct 20) for the first time since, indicating he is ready to roar back into the Test side for the marquee series Down Under.

"It felt great yesterday because I had been bowling with half a run-up on and off since I can't put too much stress on my body," he said during an event organised by Eugenix Hair Sciences in Gurugram. "Yesterday, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. It felt great, [and] the results are good. Hopefully, I'll be back on track soon."

When asked if he’s pain-free, having gone under the knife earlier in February, Shami said 100%. The right-arm seamer, however, has a whole month to attain match fitness and fight for a spot in the XI for the first Test in Perth.

"The Australia series is still far away. The only thing I want to focus on is how to keep myself fit, and how strong I can be before going there. I know what kind of an attack we want for that Test series, so it's better I spend some more time on the ground before going. If I get fit and I get a gap of eight to 10 days, then it's better I play one or two domestic matches before going to Australia."

"I don't know when I can play next, but the day I feel comfortable about bowling 20-30 overs and I get the nod from the doctors, I'll run to play a match. I want to spend as much time as I can on the ground before going for the Australia series,” he continued.

<h2>Life between fitness and frustration</h2>

Talking about his time off the field, Shami reflected on what good it did to his mindset, helping him become more patient and realise how much fitness matters to a cricketer.&nbsp;

"Don't get frustrated and focus as much as you can on fitness and game," he said about spending months off the field. "It's very difficult to come back on track after an injury, so patience is the biggest thing. Injuries teach you patience, and that makes your skill purer."

"Fitness is the main thing [you have to focus on in recovery]. You shouldn't doubt your skill and talent when you're away because certain things are built in you. I agree you need something like rhythm, but your skill will never leave you. It's your fitness you have to fight for,” he added.

Mohammed Shami is 100% pain-free, aims to play Ranji games before Australia tour

India’s pace bowler Mohammed Shami could be on the plane to Australia for the upcoming Test series after he was spotted flexing his muscle at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday (Oct 20). After India’s defeat to New Zealand by eight wickets, Shami and Shubman Gill were spotted in the aftermatch training session. While Gill is likely to return to the Playing XI in the Pune Test, it has been 11 months since Shami last tasted international cricket action.

<h2>Shami back for the BGT?</h2>

Having not played for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad on November 19, Shami has been out of action for the national side. But with cameras still rolling after the match at the Chinnaswamy on Sunday, a heavily strapped Shami took to the nets and bowled which came as a big encouraging sign for the Indian team. He bowled for several minutes in the net before calling it a day and largely looked untroubled.

Despite the encouraging signs, he was not included in the Indian squad for the Pune and Mumbai Test matches after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed squads for the remainder of the New Zealand series.

<h2>India lose Bengaluru Test</h2>

Needing 107 runs to win the Bengaluru Test on Day 5, New Zealand batters made an easy meal of the Indian bowlers as they won the Test match. For India Rishabh Pant scored 99 and gave a good helping hand to Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 150. These innings combined with Rohit’s 52 and Virat’s 71 helped India reach 462 as they overcame a massive deficit of 356 runs from the first innings.

However, the second innings heroics did not prove enough for India, having been bowled out for 46 in the first innings, as they lost by eight wickets. All eyes will now be on the second Test match, which starts on Thursday (Oct 24).

WATCH: Mohammed Shami bowls at full tilt in Bengaluru, remains in contention for Australia tour

After end of Day 2 of the India versus New Zealand Bengaluru Test, on Thursday (Oct 17), a 'bandaged' Mohammed Shami was reportedly seen bowling at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Pictures captured the Indian pacer bowling in&nbsp;the nets at the iconic stadium, where the Kiwis dismissed Rohit Sharma-led India for 46 earlier in the day, raising hopes of a comeback.&nbsp;

As per a RevSportz report, Shami has been approaching his top speed and is even believed to have increased his intensity at the NCA, where he has been under rehabilitation following a series of injuries. The wily speedster was last seen in action for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he ended with 24 scalps (most by any bowler). While he played the mega event despite ankle issues, he has had a swelling in his knees recently; adding to his injury woes.

Reportedly, Shami's&nbsp;knee was bandaged and strapped. He started bowling at a slower pace with a shorter run-up, gradually&nbsp;increasing&nbsp;his speed and approaching&nbsp;full tilt at the nets, in presence of senior figures within the National Cricket Academy (NCA)&nbsp;hierarchy.&nbsp;Troy Cooley, the lead bowling coach at the academy, and Nitin Patel,&nbsp;the head of sports science and medicine, kept a close watch on Shami.

Before the three-match Test series opener versus the Kiwis, in Bengaluru, captain Rohit Sharma opened up on Shami's injury status. He said to the reporters, "To be honest, it is difficult to make a call on him for the Australia series. He had a setback and had swelling in his knees. That put him back a little bit and had to start again. He’s at the NCA with doctors and physios. We don’t want to bring undercooked Shami to Australia. We are keeping our fingers crossed."

Thus, Shami's injury continues to be closely monitored as India would hope for his participation in the forthcoming Australia tour, comprising five Tests. The 34-year-old has missed a plethora of series since the ODI WC at home.

At present, India are on the back foot in the first Test against the Black Caps, in Bengaluru. After a washout on Day 1, India opted to bat first and got dismissed for 46 (their lowest-ever Test score on home soil) during the second day's play, on Thursday. At the time of publishing this report, New Zealand's lead is nearing 200, in the morning session of Day 3 on Friday (Oct 18),&nbsp;with four wickets in hand.

Shami played the ODI WC despite having ankle issues. Since then, he has missed a plethora of cricket due to an ankle and knee injury. He wasn't part of India's tour of South Africa, which happened soon after the home ODI WC. Further, the 34-year-old also missed the England home Tests, the T20 World Cup, the Sri Lanka white-ball tour and the Bangladesh series, where hosts India whitewashed the Bangla Tigers in two Tests. He is out of the NZ series and his participation in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 edition remains under dark clouds.

After hosting NZ in three Tests, India's next red-ball assignment is in Australia, which kicks off on Nov 22 in Perth. It will be interesting to see if Shami features in the latter half of the series. The wily pacer has 229, 195 and 24 wickets in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively.

Mohammed Shami dismisses injury rumours, remains available for Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia

India pacer Mohammed Shami's return to competitive cricket has been hit by a swollen knee during rehabilitation. Shami, who was last seen for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup at home, has reportedly done some damage to his leg. As a result, the speedster's right knee has flared up. While Shami kicked off his rehab process, his progress has been hit by a swollen knee, jeopardising his chances of making a return to the Indian team before the much-awaited India tour of Australia, featuring five Tests.

Shami has missed a plethora of series since the ODI WC, where he ended as the leading wicket-taker (24). While nothing is known regarding his availability&nbsp;for the upcoming home Tests versus New Zealand, starting Oct 16, it seemed he was targetting the Australia tour for a comeback. However,&nbsp;a BCCI source has reported that knee issues have hit his rehab process.

"Shami had resumed bowling, and he was looking on track to make a comeback to competitive cricket soon. But this knee injury has flared up recently. BCCI's medical team is assessing the injury, but it may require quite a bit of time," a BCCI source told TOI.

The source added, "It's a jolt for the NCA medical team. They have been working on him for over a year. They have one of the best workload management systems in place. The medical team is trying its best to put him back in the park soon."

Thus, Shami is running against time to be fit for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. India played the just-concluded two Tests versus Bangladesh, at home, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. While the trio are set to be part of the Australia series, Shami's experience will also be required by Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. Given it will be tough for Bumrah and Siraj to play all five Tests in Australia, Shami's importance multiplies. Even&nbsp;the 34-year-old might not play all Tests, however, his limited appearance will also benefit India, who are aiming for their third successive Test series win in Australia.

After the NZ series, and a short SA tour, India's tour of Australia will kick off at Perth on Nov 22. It is a five-match Test series, including a day-night contest in Adelaide.

Also read: Captaincy has added significant workload: Babar Azam drops a bomb, steps down as Pakistan's white-ball captain The source added, "It's a jolt for the NCA medical team. They have been working on him for over a year. They have one of the best workload management systems in place. The medical team is trying its best to put him back in the park soon." Thus, Shami is running against time to be fit for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under. India played the just-concluded two Tests versus Bangladesh, at home, with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep. While the trio are set to be part of the Australia series, Shami's experience will also be required by Rohit Sharma & Co. Given it will be tough for Bumrah and Siraj to play all five Tests in Australia, Shami's importance multiplies. Even the 34-year-old might not play all Tests, however, his limited appearance will also benefit India, who are aiming for their third successive Test series win in Australia. After the NZ series, and a short SA tour, India's tour of Australia will kick off at Perth on Nov 22. It is a five-match Test series, including a day-night contest in Adelaide.

Blow to India before Australia tour! Md Shami's comeback hit by swollen knee during rehab - Report

India is currently gearing up for the second and final Test versus Bangladesh&nbsp;in Kanpur&nbsp;on Thursday (Sep 26). From thereon, they will host New Zealand for&nbsp;three Tests before travelling to Australia for the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The forthcoming edition is keenly awaited as Rohit Sharma &amp; Co. have a chance to make it three-Test series win in a row in Australia. For that, they will expect their daunting pacers to deliver, whereas the batters will be required to complement them. Former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels India have the 'best bowling attack' to do the job in Australia.

Manjrekar, while taking to ESPNCricinfo,&nbsp;stated, "India has been to Australia before, but they might have the best bowling attack going this time, because Bumrah is at the peak of his career. Don't know what high or heights in seam bowling that's left for him. Shami comes back. Let's not forget that Mohammed Shami. Then we have Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Bumrah and Akash Deep as your options. Seam bowling, absolutely no issue for India. I think the Australians will find them a handful."

Manjrekar, however, was quick to point out that the batters, especially the young ones such as Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal, will have to complement the bowlers for India to win another series Down Under.

Manjrekar added, "India will have to bat well, the seniors will obviously have to carry the burden. I think in many ways this will be a test for Shubman Gill and Yashashvi Jaiswal. If they come through, India might have another series win."

Gill made his Test debut during the 2020/21 tour of Australia, where India's second-stringed line-up came back from a shambolic defeat in the four-match Test series opener to win 2-1. Jaiswal, on the other hand, made his Test debut last year and has already amassed&nbsp;1,094 runs in 10 Tests, including three&nbsp;hundreds and five fifties. Apart from him, it will be interesting to see how Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, etc. perform as the trio are expected to be part of the India squad for the tour Down Under.

India will head to Australia having not lost the BGT since 2017. Moreover, they have won the last two series in Australia.

BGT 2024-25: They've the best bowling attack - Manjrekar backs Indian pacers to do the job in Australia

Mohammed Shami calls India favourites to win the 2024 Border-Gavaskar series, backing the travelling side to complete a hat-trick of wins Down Under this time. India won the last two away editions in Australia, beating them in 2018-19 and 2020-21, respectively, in addition to winning at home several times.&nbsp;

Shami, who continues to recover from the ankle injury that kept him away since the ODI World Cup last year, feels the five-match series will be competitive but expects the Indian Team to stand tall once again.

"I believe India are the favourites to win the series. In the last series in Australia, we played with a young team, with many senior players absent, yet we still proved we were the best. I expect the next series to be highly competitive, but I'm confident that India will come out victorious," Shami said, as quoted in Cricbuzz.&nbsp;

Shami was part of the 2018/19 tour when India beat Australia in Australia across four matches for the first time in history but missed out on playing three Tests the last time after breaking his wrist during the Adelaide Test, which Australia won by 10 wickets.

Shami’s last appearance against the Aussies in a white jersey came during the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) Final, which Australia won for the first time.

<h2>‘I don’t want to rush myself’</h2>

Shami is currently training at the NCA in Bengaluru, with the selectors keeping a close tab on his fitness. Though the BCCI planned to name him in the squad for Bangladesh Tests starting September 19 in Chennai, they decided against doing so at the last minute, considering Shami didn’t attain full fitness by then.&nbsp;

With New Zealand Tests and a tour Down Under next, Shami wants to be completely fit and thus take more time to recover.

"I've already started bowling. I want to ensure there are no doubts in my mind and that I must not feel any discomfort. Unless I'm 100 per cent in every aspect - both mentally and physically - I won't consider returning to action. It doesn't matter which format I play or which team I'm selected for. If needed, I'll even play domestic cricket,” Shami continued.

<h3>India to beat Bangladesh at home</h3>

As India readies for the home season with two Tests against Bangladesh, Shami feels despite them winning against Pakistan in Pakistan, Bangladesh stand no chance against India in their conditions.

"It's fine if Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan, but we're playing at home. Bangladesh should consider our record, current form, and the strengths of the Indian team,” Shami added.

‘We are favourites to win Border-Gavaskar series’ – Shami confident of India completing hat-trick Down Under

India's ace pacer Mohammed Shami says he doesn't want to rush his comeback and risk getting injured again. Shami has been out ever since his magical performance in the ODI World Cup 2023, in which India lost to Australia in the final.

"I am working hard to make a comeback soon because I know I have been out of action for quite some time," Shami said at the Cricket Association of Bengal's (CAB) annual awards ceremony as reported by the news agency PTI.&nbsp;

"However, I want to ensure there is no discomfort when I return. I've to work on my fitness, so that there is no discomfort," he added.

India have a bumper Test season coming up which will see them play 10 Tests till January 2025 and Shami is an important part of those plans. The pacer, however, hasn't been included in the first Test against Bangladesh which starts September 19.

After two Tests against the Asian opponents, India host New Zealand for a three-Test series before travelling to Australia for the five-Test Border-Gavaskar series.

"The stronger I return, the better it is for me. I don't want to rush and risk getting injured again, be it against Bangladesh, New Zealand or the Australia series. I've already started bowling, but I won't take any chances until I am 100% fit," Shami said.

The pacer, who is much anticipated to make his comeback in the New Zealand home series, is also okay to test his fitness in domestic set-up if required.

"If I need to play domestic cricket to test my fitness, I will. What matters most is that I am fully ready for whatever comes next, regardless of the opposition or format," the pacer added.

India's most important tour, however, is going to be the Australia Test series where they'll be aiming to win the third consecutive Test series.

'Won't take any chances...,' India pacer Mohammed Shami offers update on potential comeback

Akash Deep picked nine wickets across two innings for India A against India B during their first-round Duleep Trophy match recently. Upon being approached about how he made the ball talk, the right-arm seamer credited constructive conversations with Mohammad Shami for this magic.&nbsp;

Though Shami remained out of contention for the Bangladesh series as he continues to recover from the ankle injury, the BCCI named Akash Deep in the squad for the first Test starting September 19 in Chennai.

The frontline seamer debuted during the England Tests in January earlier this year, impressing everyone with his tight line and length. Following the series, Akash Deep played just one IPL game and has been training at the NCA since, bowling longer spells and preparing for the marathon season.&nbsp;

As India is scheduled to play ten Tests till January next year, including two against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand, both at home and five against Australia Down Under, Akash Deep remains part of the core bowling group.

"My last proper match was my Test debut in March," Akash Deep said after Duleep Trophy’s first-round game.&nbsp;

"In the IPL, I played just one game. As a fast bowler, it's difficult to come back [after such a long stretch]. I was at the NCA for a month, I played a lot of practice games keeping in mind the kind of situations we will face in a real match so that the muscle memory is used to the rigours of a first-class match,” he continued.

<h2>Akash shines in Duleep Trophy and Shami’s advice</h2>

Of the nine wickets he picked, the two that stood out for him were the one to dismiss Nitish Reddy and another one accounting for Washington Sundar, both clean bowled.&nbsp;
The two dismissals were alike, with the ball making the right noises by seaming off the pitch.

Like how Shami trapped England great Ben Stokes during the ODI World Cup last year by first continue bowling him one line and then picking his wicket with the one that straightens off the pitch, Akash did the same with Sundar, to whom he has bowled plenty in the nets.

"I had been bowling a lot to him [Washington] from around the wicket in the nets. He has been batting a lot against me and had got used to it. So I wanted to do something that I hadn't done against him before," Akash Deep noted.

"When you bowl to a left-hander from around the wicket, the ball moves naturally towards the shine," Akash explained.&nbsp;

"I spoke to him [Shami] about how to get the ball to come back in [with the angle]. I have seen him do that.

"He advised me not to focus too much on bringing it in. He said it will automatically come over time, and, when it does, it will become a wicket-taking ball. Because if it keeps going out and, then, you are able to bring it back in with the shine, it's tough for batsmen.&nbsp;But he has cautioned me against trying it a lot. Bangladesh Test-bound Akash Deep credits Mohammed Shami for Duleep Trophy first-round success

India pacer Mohammed Shami was recently asked how does he keep himself motivated when not picked in the playing XI. The question was in reference to Shami not playing first few games in the ODI World Cup last year but ending&nbsp;as the highest wicket-taker once slotted in for injured Hardik Pandya.

“I'm habitual to it, I think,” Shami said at the recently concluded CEAT awards and the clip of his conversation with the host has been shared by Star Sports on social media platform X.

“In 2015, 2019, and 2023, I had the same start. When I was given a chance, the performances, thanks to god, they never thought of dropping me again. You can call it hard work, but I'm always ready for a chance. Only when you're ready can you prove yourself. Otherwise, I can only run to the field to give water! It's better to seize the opportunity when you get it,” he added.

Shami took 24 wickets in just seven games he played in the home World Cup but India ended up losing the final to Australia. Shami produced the best figures by an Indian bowler in ODIs as he took 7/57 against New Zealand in the semi-final.

'Thought of dropping me...,' India pacer Mohammed Shami on not playing first few games in ODI World Cup 2023

India pacer Mohammed Shami has revealed that skipper Rohit Sharma's reactions start to come out on the field if a player doesn't meet his expectations. Shami made the comments at the recent CEAT awards.

Rohit is famous among fans for his antics on the field during a match which also includes an occasional bad word.

"The best thing about Rohit is that he gives you freedom. However, if you don't meet his expectations, his reactions start to show a bit. He'll tell you that you should have done this or needed to do that. But if you still don't live up to it, then the reactions we see on the screen, the ones we understand without him saying anything, start to come out," said Shami.

India will be hoping for Shami to get back to full fitness at least ahead of the Australia series if not New Zealand as they aim for a third straight series victory Down Under.

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami might miss the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh starting September 19 in Chennai. Although he has resumed bowling at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru following his ankle surgery, the BCCI decided against accelerating his comeback.&nbsp;

Given India will play five Tests Down Under later this year, the board wants Shami to recover at his pace and return when 100%.

The India fast bowler is said to mark his return with the first Ranji Trophy game for Bengal starting October 11.

Shami was India’s best bowler during the 2023 ODI World Cup – picking 24 wickets in seven contested matches. His performance propelled India to reach another WC Final – the second time at home, but they came short against the eventual winners, Australia, by six wickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The right-arm pacer suffered an ankle injury during the ten-team tournament and has been ruled out of competitive cricket since. Although the board named him in the Test squad for the South Africa series later last year, Shami pulled his name out.&nbsp;

Later, he underwent surgery in London in February this year, recovering at the NCA&nbsp;since.

Earlier, several reports claimed that the Indian Cricket Board is hopeful that Shami will attain full fitness in time for the first series of the upcoming home season; that, however, is far from reality as Shami continues to recover from his ankle injury.

<h2>The daunting Australian Tour</h2>

The BCCI understands the magnitude of this Test series, and to ensure India completes a historic hat-trick of series win Down Under, they need a fully-fit Shami on the board.&nbsp;

If all goes well and Shami fares per expectation during the domestic matches, the board can include him for the second and third Test against the Kiwis.&nbsp;

Per a report in the Indian Express, the BCCI also plans to send Shami with the India-A side to Australia for two four-day fixtures starting October 31 and November 7 to acclimatise and prepare for the marquee Test series.

Meanwhile, the last time India toured Australia, Shami broke his wrist while batting in the first Test in Adelaide, which India lost embarrassingly. They, however, created history by winning the series 2-1 under stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane and without Shami and their then-captain Virat Kohli.&nbsp;

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar seemed confident of Shami's recovery ahead of Australia series and said to cricket news outlet ESPNCricinfo: "Shami has started to bowl which is a good sign. September 19 is the first Test and that was always the goal. I do not know if that is his timeline for recovery, will have to ask the guys at the NCA about that."&nbsp;

Prior to that, India will also play home Tests against Bangladesh and New Zealand as well. The two-Test series against Bangladesh starts September 19 while the Kiwis will tour after that. India then flies Down Under.

'Decision will be taken after...,' BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Mohammed Shami playing Australia Tests

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami is closing in on full fitness, with the latest report suggesting he might return to playing competitive cricket during the home season that begins with the Bangladesh Tests on September 19 in Chennai. Shami is currently completing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is progressing well, reported ESPNcricinfo citing sources close to the information.

The right-arm seamer suffered an ankle injury while playing the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. Although that looked far from serious even after the tournament's completion, with the selectors naming him in the Test squad for the South Africa tour later, Shami pulled his name out as he underwent surgery on his troubled ankle.

That, however, ruled him out of the on-field cricket indefinitely. Shami returned home in March and continued to get treated at the NCA since. Meanwhile, before flying to the Island Nation for the recently concluded tour, the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided the latest update on Shami, saying he has resumed bowling and is taking baby steps to return to his rhythm and match fitness.

<h2>To begin with domestic cricket</h2>

Per a report in ESPNcricinfo, the selectors and team management are keeping a keen eye on Shami's fitness and daily improvement chart, with a decision on whether he should play at least one of the Duleep Trophy matches, beginning on September 5 in Anantapur, yet to be taken.

However, Shami was keen on playing for Bengal in domestic cricket before making his much-anticipated return to international cricket.

Although even if Shami misses the home season, including two Tests against Bangladesh and three against New Zealand, which ends on October 5, the seamer would have ample time to prepare&nbsp;himself for the mega tour Down Under, beginning in November.&nbsp;

Boost for Team India as Mohammed Shami expected to be fit for home Bangladesh Tests

India pacer Mohammed Shami's friend Umesh Kumar has revealed that the bowler had contemplated suicide after being accused of match-fixing by his now separated wife Hasin Jahan. The pacer had also admitted to be in a tough phase during the separation from his wife.

"Shami was fighting with everything during that phase. He lived with me in my house. But when the fixing allegations with Pakistan broke, and led to a probe that night, he was shattered. He said that I can tolerate everything but not allegations of betraying my country," Umesh said on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast.

"It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night [end his life]. It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami's career, I feel, was the longest," he added.

Shami was eventually cleared of any wrongdoings and Umesh shared that the pacer was happiest after knowing the result of committee examining the allegations.&nbsp;

"Later, one day, when we were talking, he got a message on his phone saying he got a clean chit from the committee that was investigating the matter. He was probably happier that day than he would have been if he had won a World Cup," Umesh added.

Most recently, Shami performed splendidly at the ODI World Cup 2023 - taking the highest wickets (24) in the tournament despite playing only seven matches.

The pacer has since been recovering from an injury and hasn't played in any form of competitive cricket since then, including the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024.

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on his relationship with veteran batter Virat Kohli, saying the bond he shares with Kohli is not for everyone to know and definitely not for TRP. Gambhir, who has a history with Kohli, including their latest verbal brawl during last year’s IPL, added Kohli and he represent&nbsp;140 crore Indians, and at the end of the day, that matters.

"What kind of a relationship I have with Virat Kohli is not for TRP. At the moment, we are representing India, we are representing 140 crore Indians. I have an excellent relationship with him off the field,” Gambhir said when asked about his connection with his former teammate.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Virat and Gautam have played together for Delhi in domestic cricket and later for India across formats for several years. Two aggressive yet stylish cricketers have had some bitter memories to look back also, beginning with an on-field brawl during an IPL season over a decade ago.&nbsp;

Following Kohli’s wicket during that game (where Kohli was playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gambhir was leading Kolkata Knight Riders), both aggressively approached each other, only for others to interrupt and separate them.

“But, it's not for the public. It's not important how many chats I've had with him during or after the game. He is a thorough professional and a world-class athlete, and hopefully, he will continue that way,” Gambhir continued.

<h2>Gambhir on Shami’s return</h2>

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami got ruled out of on-field with an ankle injury following the home World Cup last year and has been on the sidelines&nbsp;since.&nbsp;

Upon undergoing surgery in London earlier this year, Shami returned home and, per Gambhir, has also started bowling. Though he will miss the white-ball leg against Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs starting July 27, Shami might return during the home season that begins with Bangladesh Tests on September 19.&nbsp;

“He (Shami) has started to bowl. The first Test is on 19th September. That was always the goal (him making a comeback by that time). Whether he can make it back to the squad by that time, I'll have to speak with the guys at the NCA,” Gambhir said.&nbsp;

<h2>Is the three-different-team theory a myth?</h2>

Gambhir answered the most talked-about question since his appointment as Team India's head coach, ‘Will India have three different teams for each format going forward?’

Although Gautam didn’t deny that this could happen in future, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the idea is to have the right players playing the right formats.

“See, eventually these things happen. Transitions happen. We don't have Rohit and Virat in T20Is now. But it won't be like we have three different teams,” Gambhir said during his first presser as India head coach.

Meanwhile, Agarkar noted, “Yeah, we don't plan on that. We just need to find the right combination of players, who can suit across different formats.”

It's not important how many chats I've had with him during or after the game. He is a thorough professional and a world-class athlete, and hopefully, he will continue that way,” Gambhir continued. Gambhir on Shami’s return Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami got ruled out of on-field with an ankle injury following the home World Cup last year and has been on the sidelines since. Upon undergoing surgery in London earlier this year, Shami returned home and, per Gambhir, has also started bowling. Though he will miss the white-ball leg against Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs starting July 27, Shami might return during the home season that begins with Bangladesh Tests on September 19. “He (Shami) has started to bowl. The first Test is on 19th September. That was always the goal (him making a comeback by that time). Whether he can make it back to the squad by that time, I'll have to speak with the guys at the NCA,” Gambhir said. Is the three-different-team theory a myth? Gambhir answered the most talked-about question since his appointment as Team India's head coach, ‘Will India have three different teams for each format going forward?’ Although Gautam didn’t deny that this could happen in future, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the idea is to have the right players playing the right formats. “See, eventually these things happen. Transitions happen. We don't have Rohit and Virat in T20Is now. But it won't be like we have three different teams,” Gambhir said during his first presser as India head coach. Meanwhile, Agarkar noted, “Yeah, we don't plan on that. We just need to find the right combination of players, who can suit across different formats.” (With inputs from agencies)

India coach Gambhir opens up on relationship with Virat Kohli; provides update on Mohammed Shami’s return

Former Pakistan opener Salman Butt has hit out on Indian pacer Mohammed Shami for his 'dirty hit' on legendary Pak batter Inzamam-ul-Haq. Shami recently had indirectly called out Inzamam for selection of his nephew Imam-ul-Haq in the national team during his tenure as Pakistan chief selector.

"Pakistan should not pick teams based on relations and friendships. Mohammed Shami's comments were targeted towards Inzamam-ul-Haq. He targeted Inzamam by speaking about Pakistan picking their team based on personal relations, and I think this is wrong. This is wrong because if you look at Imam's record, he came into the Pakistan team on the basis of his performance. He was also dropped when he failed. Shami's remarks were below the belt and he shouldn't have said such things," Butt said on YouTube.

"Yes, there was a controversy, which should've been avoided. A lot of people made statements, Inzamam also said something, Rohit Sharma also clarified, and the topic was over. But to say things about selecting players just because they are relatives is a dirty hit. Such things don't suit Mohammed Shami. He is a renowned bowler, like how Inzamam was a renowned captain," he added.

Butt was referring to Inzamam's comments on Indian bowlers tampering with the ball during the recent T20 World Cup to get reverse swing. India skipper Rohit Sharma had then pointed out the conditions in the USA, T20 World Cup co-host, which abetted reverse swing.

Shami, during a podcast on YouTube with Shubhankar Mishra's had said: "I don't understand why people find it necessary to target others. Improve your selection, and send a good team, they can do it, the talent is there. Do one thing, make it a family team if you want to run the team based on personal relations,"

India eventually went on to win the T20 World Cup by beating South Africa in the final.&nbsp;

'They are relatives...,' Ex-Pakistan opener Salman Butt slams Mohammed Shami for 'dirty hit' on Inzamam-ul-Haq

Mohammed Shami is one of India’s best all-format bowlers and perhaps the most successful in the 50-over World Cups. However, despite star performances across the past two editions (2019 and 2023), wherein he picked 38 wickets in just 11 matches, including several five-fors and a seven-wicket haul in the semis last year, Shami questioned Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri's tactics during the 2019 edition.

Recalling the decisions made by the captain and the coach during the 2019 World Cup in England, Shami said despite picking a hat-trick (against Afghanistan) and ten more wickets in the remaining three games that he played, he got dropped from the playing XI from the final league game (against Sri Lanka) and subsequently against New Zealand (in the semis), which India lost and got knocked out of the tournament.

Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube show, ‘Unplugged,’ Shami sounded clueless about management’s call over his selection in the XI.

Meanwhile, much like last year when he got a chance after the first four matches, Shami suffered the same fate during the 2019 edition, wherein he got picked for the first time during the mid-tournament.

“In 2019, I did not play the first 4-5 games. In the next game, I took a hat-trick, then picked up a five-wicket haul and then four wickets in the next game. A similar happened in 2023. I did not play in the first few games and then picked a fifer, then four wickets and then a five-wicket haul again,” Shami said during the show.

“The one thing I keep wondering is every team needs players who can perform well. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What more do you expect from me? I neither have questions nor do I have answers. I can only prove myself when I get the opportunity.&nbsp;

“You gave me a chance, and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. I played four matches overall and picked 14 wickets. In 2023, I picked 24 wickets in seven matches,” the India ace seamer added.

<h2>Shami prepares for comeback</h2>

Out with an ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup, seamer Shami aims to return to the cricket field during the upcoming home season, starting with Bangladesh Tests in September.&nbsp;

As Team India gets ready for a new season under Gautam Gambhir, who replaced Rahul Dravid as the new head coach, Shami will eye a spot in the XI across formats, preparing for the five Tests Down Under starting November and the ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan early next year.

Shami questions Kohli-Shastri tactics in 2019 World Cup; sounds clueless over snub from XI despite performance

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has put down five conditions before accepting the offer to become Team India’s new head coach. Per the latest reports, the two-time World Cup winner was among the two candidates, alongside former women’s team coach WV Raman, whom BCCI interviewed (as Rahul Dravid’s replacement) for India’s all-format coach. Should he get picked, Gambhir will begin his three-and-a-half-year tenure with the away Sri Lanka series in July.

Per Navbharat Times, Gambhir has laid five conditions, which include that he wants complete control of cricket operations in the Indian Team. Secondly, Gambhir has informed the board that he will pick his backroom staff, for whom he is said to have contacted fielding great Jonty Rhodes earlier.&nbsp;

The third and perhaps most talked-about condition was that if the Indian Team failed to win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan next year, the four seniors, including Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami, would face the axe. Although there is no confirmation as to whether India will travel across the border for the eight-team tournament, should they, then India&nbsp;must end up winning it else the road for the said players shall be closed.

His fourth condition is separate teams for all formats, mainly for the Tests, while the fifth and final condition is, that he wishes to start preparing the roadmap for the 2027 50-over World Cup from day one.

<h2>Gambhir’s head coach announcement soon</h2>

Right after the England Tests early in January this year, the BCCI put out invitations for applications for India’s head coach role, with current coach Rahul Dravid’s tenure ending with the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in the Americas.

Although a few names did&nbsp;rounds, including the overseas pair of Justin Langer and Ricky Ponting and even Stephen Fleming, none could materialise.&nbsp;

With that, Gambhir’s name also came forward, and with him winning the IPL 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders (as a mentor), he could further press his case.

According to latest reports, both concerned parties are now on the same page, with the BCCI officially announcing Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach sooner.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Men in Blue will play Australia in their last Super 8 match at the ongoing T20 WC on Monday (June 24), with the semis spot on the line. Although they sit in the top place on the points table, they are yet to qualify for the last four.&nbsp;

Should India win this tournament, it would be Dravid’s first major ICC trophy as the India coach.&nbsp;

Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami are two of the most famed and successful sportspersons from India. While Sania is the greatest women’s tennis player, Shami is a champion pace bowler who took the most wickets in the ODI World Cup 2023 with his remarkable performance.

However, lately, the star players are in the limelight due to their personal lives. Rumours about the marriage of Sania and Shami are doing the rounds on social media.&nbsp;

This comes in the wake of Sania and Pakistani cricket star Shoaib Malik’s divorce earlier this year, and Shami’s separation from his wife Hasin Jahan.

<h2>Is there any truth to this rumour? Mirza’s father breaks silence</h2>

Imran Mirza, Sania’s father, quashed and firmly dismissed the rumours of his daughter’s wedding with Mohammed Shami saying, “This is all rubbish. She has not even met him,” while speaking to NDTV.

Sania, who has transitioned into a commentator role after retiring from professional tennis, was last seen working as a pundit for the prestigious French Open 2024.

<h2>Fake morphed wedding photo goes viral</h2>

Netizens have been pouring their thoughts out on the sports icons’ alleged marriage on social media, calling them a "perfect match."
&nbsp;
A manipulated photo claiming to show Sania Mirza and Mohammed Shami’s wedding took the internet by storm. The image, which falsely depicted Shami and Sania as a married couple, was debunked and exposed to be a doctored version of Sania’s 2010 wedding photo with Shoaib Malik.

<h2>Sania Mirza’s journey to Hajj</h2>

Five months after announcing a split with cricketer husband Shoaib Malik, Sania recently embarked on Hajj pilgrimage, marking a significant personal milestone. In a social media post, Sania shared her hopes and prayers for a ‘transformative experience’ during Hajj, through which she hoped to return as a better human being.

"As I prepare for this transformative experience, I humbly ask for your forgiveness for any wrongdoings and shortcomings," she wrote.

Sania further said that she hopes Allah accepts her prayers and guides her on this blessed path.

"I am deeply fortunate and feel immensely grateful. Please keep me in your thoughts and prayers as I embark on this journey of a lifetime. I hope to come back as a better human being with a humble heart and stronger Imaan," she added.

Will Sania Mirza marry Mohammed Shami? Tennis icon’s father quashes the buzz

Gujarat Titans (GT) have announced a like-for-like replacement for their talismanic strike bowler Mohammed Shami who will be not participating in the 2024 season due to an injury. Hailing from the southern state of Kerala, fast bowler Sandeep Warrier has been named Shami's replacement and will join the franchise at his base price of Rs 50 lakh ($60,000).

Warrier, who currently represents Tamil Nadu on the domestic circuit, has previous experience of playing in the big leagues, having plied his trade for Kolkata Knight Riders between 2019 and 2021 where he featured in five matches. He was with Mumbai Indians in the 2023 season but did not get any game time.&nbsp;

Warrier will link up with the likes of Umesh Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Josh Little, Spencer Johnson, Sushant Mishra, Darshan Nalkande and Kartik Tyagi to form the pace battery of GT.&nbsp;

Shami was the highest wicket-taker last year, ending the season with 28 scalps at an average of 18.64 and a best of 4 for 11 for the then-Hardik Pandya-led side. His performance was instrumental in the one-time winners ending as the runners-up.&nbsp;

Shami's injury remains a big body blow for Shubman Gill-led GT but the management would&nbsp;hope that Warrier can come good and replicate if not all, but some of Shami's magic on the field.&nbsp;

IPL 2024: Gujarat Titans announce Sandeep Warrier as Mohammed Shami's replacement

Former Australia captain Tim Paine criticised Pat Cummins-led Australian batting unit despite their narrow three-wicket win over New Zealand in the second and final Test, in Christchurch, on Monday (March 11). In chase of 279, the visitors were reeling at 80-5, and further reduced to 220 for 7, before keeper-batter Alex Carey (98*) and skipper Cummins (32 not out) propelled their side home to inflict a series whitewash. Nonetheless, Paine isn't happy with his national side's batting unit and have asked them to improve their performance else they will be beaten by the likes of England and India in the near future.

Rohit Sharma-led India, who are currently at the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table, will tour Australia later this year for five Tests. Hence, Paine believes Australia's top order needs to get going.&nbsp;

On SEN Tassie Breakfast, Paine said, "I’m disappointed. We’re a better team than them (New Zealand) and it was the same against the West Indies, there seems to be a bit of a pattern. Not scoring enough runs,&nbsp;you can’t always believe what they’re telling you but the leadership and coaching and captain and selectors say, ‘we have no concerns with our batters’. Well, I do now."

“There are more questions coming out of the last three or four Tests than answers, and we need to find some answers pretty quickly,” Paine further opined.

The likes of Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne have not been at their consistent best in the last few series and, hence, the former Aussie skipper wants the batting line-up to improve further with a home series versus a rampant India coming this Australian summer. In addition, the 39-year-old believes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, Mohammed Shami, etc. will pose a stern test for the Aussie batters at home.

<h2>'India are certainly going to trouble us with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj...'</h2>

He added, "We might not beat New Zealand, we’ve lost a Test to West Indies, we wouldn’t beat England if they were playing well with a full-strength side and&nbsp;India are certainly going to trouble us with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, so there are some concerns."

India have beaten Australia in their last two Test series held Down Under, in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Rohit Sharma-led India, who are currently at the top of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points table, will tour Australia later this year for five Tests. Hence, Paine believes Australia's top order needs to get going. On SEN Tassie Breakfast, Paine said, "I’m disappointed. We’re a better team than them (New Zealand) and it was the same against the West Indies, there seems to be a bit of a pattern. Not scoring enough runs, you can’t always believe what they’re telling you but the leadership and coaching and captain and selectors say, ‘we have no concerns with our batters’. Well, I do now." “There are more questions coming out of the last three or four Tests than answers, and we need to find some answers pretty quickly,” Paine further opined. Also read: 'We keep finding ways to win, it's an awesome squad' - Cummins hails Australian team after Christchurch win 'India are certainly going to trouble us with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj...' He added, "We might not beat New Zealand, we’ve lost a Test to West Indies, we wouldn’t beat England if they were playing well with a full-strength side and India are certainly going to trouble us with Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, so there are some concerns." India have beaten Australia in their last two Test series held Down Under, in 2018-19 and 2020-21. While the series is still far away, it is expected to be a mouth-watering contest between the two heavyweights and, hence, both sides' key players will be desperate to be in form before the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar edition gets underway.

<h2>Shami to miss IPL</h2>

Shami will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season as he will be recovering post-surgery. This will be a big blow for the Gujarat Titans,&nbsp;having already lost captain Hardik Panyda in the trading window. While it is not known by when&nbsp;will he recover, it is likely that he will be available for selection only after the IPL and will target the T20 World Cup in the USA and the West Indies.

Shami, having suffered&nbsp;the heel issue during the ODI World Cup, lifted himself to help India land glory on home turf. Despite missing the first four matches of the ODI World Cup and being down the pecking order, Shami managed to bag 24 wickets in the tournament to end as the highest wicket-taker. On three occasions, he managed to scalp a five-fer including a best of 57/7 in the semifinal against New Zealand.

India pacer Mohammed Shami receives prestigious Arjuna Award from President Droupadi Murmu - Watch

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has been deemed doubtful for the first two Tests of the upcoming five-match home series against England starting January 25. The pacer is still recovering from the ankle injury sustained during the ODI World Cup which was concluded on November 19. Shami also didn't play in the recently drawn two-Test series in South Africa after initially being named in the squad.

“Shami hasn’t even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England," a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told news outlet the Indian Express.

Shami's absence, however, shouldn't hamper India's plans much as pitches in India largely require spinners to do the bulk of bowling. With Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj fit and firing alongside Prasidh Krishna, Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan on the bench, India should be good without Shami.

<h2>Surya to undergo surgery</h2>

Apart from the pacer, T20I specialist Suryakumar Yadav has also been sidelined for quite some time. Yadav, who had led India in last two T20I series, against Australia right after ODI WC and South Africa, will be undergoing hernia surgery. The board official informed the Indian Express that Yadav is expected to be fit around the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

"In Yadav’s case he will take more time than expected. After his hernia operation it might take up to eight-nine weeks for him to start training. Hopefully he will be fit during the IPL,” the source informed.

Owing to the injury, Yadav has not been named in the <a href="Rohit Sharma returns to lead India in Afghanistan T20Is, Kohli included in 16-man squad">squad for three T20Is against Afghanistan</a> which starts on January 11. Yadav's fitness is important as India would want world's no. 1 batter&nbsp;fully fit for the T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in June later this year.

He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England," a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told news outlet the Indian Express. Surya to undergo surgery Apart from the pacer, T20I specialist Suryakumar Yadav has also been sidelined for quite some time. Yadav, who had led India in last two T20I series, against Australia right after ODI WC and South Africa, will be undergoing hernia surgery.
