India&rsquo;s fast bowler <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammed-shami">Mohammed Shami</a> has credited his unique fitness regimen&mdash;eating just one meal a day&mdash;for maintaining peak performance. The 34-year-old pacer, a key figure in India&rsquo;s Champions Trophy campaign, revealed that he abstains from breakfast and lunch, relying solely on dinner to fuel his body.
"After 2015, I only have one meal a day. I only have dinner; no breakfast, no lunch. It is very difficult at first, but once you get used to it, it becomes easy," Shami shared in a conversation with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/navjot-singh-sidhu">Navjot Singh Sidhu</a> on official broadcaster Star.
His disciplined approach has played a crucial role in his success. He was the standout bowler in India's tournament opener against Bangladesh, taking five wickets and becoming the fastest Indian to reach 200 ODI wickets.
<h2>'I stay away from sweets'</h2>
Shami&rsquo;s comeback follows a 14-month injury layoff after suffering an ankle injury in the 2023 ODI <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/world-cup">World Cup</a> final against Australia.&nbsp;Shami said he gained quite a bit of weight during the recovery phase and had to shed nearly nine kgs to get back into shape.
"I have lost nine kgs (during rehabilitation). The most difficult thing is you have to challenge yourself. When you are in this condition... When I was at the NCA, it was a very difficult phase," "My weight was touching 90kgs. The best thing about me is that I do not crave for delicacies. I stay away from sweets. I stay away from a lot of things, things that generally one shouldn't eat. So, I stay away from them," said Shami.
Shami, who has claimed 55 wickets across three ODI World Cups and became the eighth Indian to reach 200 wickets in one-day cricket, added that despite his strict regimen he does enjoy his biryani once in a while. "And, as far as the biryani is concerned, so sometimes it's okay."
Shami will be a key player in India&rsquo;s much-anticipated <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> clash against Pakistan on Sunday (Feb 23), with his fitness and form crucial for India&rsquo;s campaign.

Mohammed Shami, during the Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh on Thursday (Feb 20) in Dubai, became India's highest wicket-taker in the ICC 50-over tournaments&mdash;ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy. Shami now has 60 wickets combined in both the tournaments, going past former left-arm fast bowler Zaheer Khan's 59-wicket mark.
Other India pacers in the list are Javagal Srinath (47), Ravindra Jadeja (43) and Jasprit Bumrah (42) along with Anil Kumbale (42).

Shami has played a total of 19 matches for India in the ICC ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy combined for his 60 wickets, while Zaheer played 32 matches for his wickets. Shami has also taken five five-fors in these games&mdash;also the most for any Indian bowler.
Among active cricketers, Shami is behind only Australia's Mitchell Starc, who has 71 wickets in 32 matches at these two tournaments. Overall, Shami's 60 wickets are seventh highest in the world behind Glenn McGrath (92), Muthiah Muralidaran (92), Lasith Malinga (81), Starc, Chaminda Vaas (67), and Wasim Akram (62).
<h2>Shami becomes fastest to 200 ODI wickets</h2>
During the match, Shami also completed his 200 wickets in the ODIs for India. He is the fastest bowler to reach the mark in terms of balls bowled. The Indian pacer took 5126 balls to reach the record, beating Australia's Mitchell Starc, who had taken 5240 balls to take 200 ODI wickets.
Shami, playing his 104th ODI game, is also the joint second-fastest to reach the milestone in terms of matches played along with Pakistan spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. Only Starc, who took 200 wickets in 102 matches, is ahead of Shami.&nbsp;
Thanks to Shami, India bowled out Bangladesh for 228 runs. The score would have been even lower if not for a 154-run partnership between Jake Ali (61) and Towhid Hridoy (100) for the sixth wicket.

Once Rishad departed on a team score of 215, India made small work of the remaining wickets and bowled out Bangladesh for 228 runs in 49.4 overs. Hridoy, who completed a sensational 100&mdash;also his maiden one in ODIs&mdash;was the last wicket to fall.
For India, Harshit Rana took 3/31 while Axar Patel picked up 2/43&mdash;both in the same over, apart from Shami's five-for.

Champions Trophy: HISTORIC! India pacer Mohammed Shami becomes fastest to take 200 ODI wickets

India pacer Mohammed Shami has revealed that the doctor told him 'cricket is still a distant goal' when he started his rehab following the surgery for the injury suffered during the ODI World Cup 2023. Shami last played in international cricket in the ODI WC final in November 2023 at home before making a comeback in January last month against England in T20Is.
"I always wondered when I would be able to put my feet on the ground again, as someone who is used to running on the field constantly was now in crutches," Shami told in a video shared by BCCI.&nbsp;

"A lot of thoughts used to run through my mind. Will I be able to do it again? Will I be able to walk without a limp? For the first two months, I often doubted whether I would be able to play again as an injury like this followed by a 14-month break can pull you down.
"My first question to the doctor was 'how many days until I can be back on the field'. He said, 'my priority is to get you to walk, then jog, and then run and thinking about playing competitive cricket is still a distant goal'," added the pacer.
<h2>Shami key for India at Champions Trophy</h2>
The 34-year-old pacer is going to be the key for India at the Champions Trophy, especially when premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the squad. Shami will have to act as the leader of the pace group which has Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana - both young - as other fast bowlers.&nbsp;
Apart from these three, Hardik Pandya is also in the squad as a medium-pace all-rounder. India, however, have gone spin-heavy in the tournament with five options in the squad.
Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are three spin all-rounders in the squad, while Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakaravarthy are two specialist spinners.

Champions Trophy: Shami shares doctor's plan at rehab. 'Cricket is still a distant goal'

Former India pacer Laxmipathy Balaji believes that Mohammed Shami will be very important if the team has to do well in the Champions Trophy. The statement comes as India prepare for their campaign without Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out due to a back injury.
"Actually, he had out-bowled Bumrah in the 2019 (50-over World Cup) and in the last World Cup (2023). Bumrah is the champion bowler across formats. But Shami has experience and, before Bumrah's arrival, it was Shami who carried India's attack all through," said Balaji as reported by news agency PTI.

"I think it's very important. If India has to do well, then Shami has to come good with the new ball. The kind of impact he can make in his first six overs with the new ball, it will play a crucial role for India."
"Old ball is anyway...it is a defensive game now. If he can make early inroads regularly, that will give a huge boost to India," he added.
<h2>India pick five spinners for Champions Trophy</h2>
The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee has picked up five spinners in the India squad&mdash;Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. The three pacers in the team are Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana with Hardik Pandya as the medium pace all-rounder.
Varun was included at the last minute in place of batter Yashasvi Jaiswal&mdash;a move that has been questioned a lot since Jaiswal was part of the provisional squad for the tournament.
The five spinners, two of which offer the same skill (Axar and Jadeja), have also been termed one too many, if not two. The idea behind selecting the spinners could be the slow and turning pitches of Dubai&mdash;the venue where India will play all its matches.
India start their campaign against Bangladesh on Feb 20 before facing Pakistan on Feb 23 and New Zealand on Mar 2 in the last group-stage match.

The pacer, however, didn't finish his quota of four overs in both games. He bowled three overs in Rajkot and gave away 25 runs. England's innings in the Mumbai match was over in 10.3 overs only, out of which Shami bowled 2.3 overs. IND vs ENG, 3rd T20I: 'Mohammed Shami is fit, but...’, says Indian batting coach ahead of 3rd T20I

Unagitated by the lingering fitness concerns surrounding <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/mohammed-shami">Mohammed Shami</a>, the Men in Blue team will be eyeing to extend their lead against England in the second game of a five-match series, on Saturday (Jan 25).&nbsp;
India lead the series 1-0 after a thumping seven-wicket victory at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/eden-gardens">Eden Gardens</a> on Wednesday. The hosts would certainly want to see Shami in action but his inclusion in playing XI, as things stand now, will depend on further evaluation of his fitness.&nbsp;
The 34-year-old pacer was expected to feature in the first game and was actively involved in the nets too, but his comeback was postponed possibly because the management wanted to take a closer look at his availability.&nbsp;
However, India did not miss Shami much in Kolkata where left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, with the new ball, and spinner Varun Chakravarthy, in the middle phase, ran riot against England, producing impressive spells.&nbsp;

From England&rsquo;s perspective, they would require more contributions from experienced spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone to challenge the hosts.&nbsp;
Apart from pacer Jofra Archer, none of the other English bowlers could survive the onslaught of Abhishek Sharma and the mini cameo of Sanju Samson in the first T20I.&nbsp;
<h2>Sanju-Abhishek pair on a roll&nbsp;</h2>
Since coming together in the T20Is last year, Samson and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/abhishek-sharma">Abhishek</a> have had considerable success, often giving India a flying start.&nbsp;
The desired double-barrel firing has been occasional, but at least one of them has produced the goods rather consistently. In Kolkata, Abhishek hurt England with a brutal knock, striking at over 230.&nbsp;
Samson has three hundreds in the last six innings, and it would not be unrealistic to imagine these two as the first-choice openers once India hit the road to next year&rsquo;s T20 World Cup at home.&nbsp;
They also offer that rare right-hand-left-hand combination at the top. In Chennai, the Indian openers will be hoping to give their side a solid start considering the tricky nature of the Chepauk pitch.&nbsp;
England too will hope for a fiery start from their openers to clinch early momentum, as Phil Salt and Ben Duckett jointly made just four runs off seven balls.&nbsp;
<h2>Time for Surya to shine&nbsp;</h2>
It&rsquo;s not a matter of grave concern yet but skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/suryakumar-yadav">Suryakumar Yadav</a> will be mindful of the fact that he has just two fifties in the previous 11 innings after the T20 World Cup final in 2024.&nbsp;
But the captain will be hoping for a fruitful outing in the second T20I and would not want to miss the party for long.&nbsp;

IND vs ENG 2nd T20I: India keep eye on Shami’s fitness, look to extend series lead

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/shami">Mohammed Shami</a> has returned to the Indian Team, since ODI World Cup final (in November 2023), bowling full throttle in his first training session on Sunday in Kolkata. Ahead of the T20I series opener against England on Wednesday (Jan 22) at the Eden Gardens, Shami&rsquo;s bowling was the focus as he threw 'rockets' in the nets with the strapped knee.
The ace Indian quick looked in his element and bowled for over an hour in the nets, with the bowling coach Morne Morkel keeping a close tab on his progress. Upon returning to competitive cricket late last year, Shami played several Ranji Trophy matches (for Bengal) before plying his trade in the domestic white-ball competitions &ndash; Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Although he recovered from the swelling on his knee, something India captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/rohit">Rohit Sharma</a> pointed out as one of the reasons for Shami's delayed international comeback, the selectors decided against picking him for India&rsquo;s tour of Australia. In his absence, Jasprit Bumrah shouldered the entire burden, even captaining India in two matches, while returning with 32 wickets across nine innings &ndash; the most by any bowler in BGT 2024/25.
Shami began training by marking a spot on a good-length area on the practice pitches, warming up by bowling with a half run-up for close to 20 minutes. He then bowled full run-ups to openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma before getting down to fielding drills with coach T Dilip and head coach Gambhir. Following the net session, Shami wrapped up the evening with a full-throttle ten-minute spell on the practice pitches.

Fit-again Shami throws 'rockets' in training with strapped knee - Watch

Ace seamer Mohammed Shami has returned to the Indian Team for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup Final against Australia, as BCCI announced a 15-man squad for the England T20Is starting January 22 in Kolkata. Suryakumar Yadav leads the star-studded side, with no Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill.
<h3>Here is India&rsquo;s T20I squad for England series &ndash;</h3>
Suryakumar Yadav (C), Sanju Samson (wk), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel (vc), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Dhruv Jurel (wk)
<h2>Team India ready for England</h2>
Most players who featured in the four-match T20I series against South Africa in November retained their places, while a few made the cut on current form.&nbsp;
Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma will play in the top order alongside the skipper SKY, with Hardik Pandya, his fellow all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and Rinku Singh taking care of the middle-order duties; senior campaigner Axar Patel to play Surya&rsquo;s deputy.
Meanwhile, the selection committee named all-rounder Washington Sundar alongside backup keeper-batter Dhruv Jurel.
The highlight of this squad selection is the return of ace pacer Shami, who will don the Indian jersey for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad (on November 19). The right-arm quick played the showpiece event with an ankle injury, which later ruled him out of all cricket action for almost a year. Shami, however, returned to the domestic structure in 2024, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy and impressing the selectors with his form and fitness.
Although the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee decided against picking Shami for the recently concluded BGT Down Under, they roped him in the 15-man squad for England T20Is.
<h3>No Jaiswal, Gill or Pant</h3>
While the T20I squad indicates that the selectors are clear on whom to play in which format, the absence of three-star players &ndash; Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant raised a few eyebrows.
However, per the latest reports, the selectors rested Gill and Pant, while Jaiswal was never in the scheme of things, considering plenty of options at the top in this format. Though both might return for England ODIs and Champions Trophy 2025 squads, no word on Jaiswal&rsquo;s inclusion has been shared.
Besides, should KL Rahul also get picked for the eight-team tournament scheduled in Pakistan and the UAE, he will play as a specialist batter.&nbsp;
The squads for the remaining two series will be named in one week.&nbsp;

No Jaiswal, Gill or Pant While the T20I squad indicates that the selectors are clear on whom to play in which format, the absence of three-star players – Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant raised a few eyebrows. However, per the latest reports, the selectors rested Gill and Pant, while Jaiswal was never in the scheme of things, considering plenty of options at the top in this format. Though both might return for England ODIs and Champions Trophy 2025 squads, no word on Jaiswal’s inclusion has been shared. Besides, should KL Rahul also get picked for the eight-team tournament scheduled in Pakistan and the UAE, he will play as a specialist batter. The squads for the remaining two series will be named in one week. India’s schedule for England T20Is – 1st T20I – January 22 in Kolkata 2nd T20I – January 25 in Chennai 3rd T20I – January 28 in Rajkot 4th T20I – January 31 in Pune 5th T20I – February 2 in Mumbai (With inputs from agencies)

In Shami's absence only Jasprit Bumrah had an impact as a bowler for India in the BGT. After Bumrah, who was named Player of the Series with 32 wickets, Mohammed Siraj with 20 wickets was the next best and Prasidh Krishna, who played only one Test out of five, was third best with six wickets.
As for Shami, there were talks that he will join the squad ahead of the fourth Test on the Boxing Day at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) but wasn't cleared by the Indian cricket board.
Most recently, Shami played two matches in the domestic 50-over cup Vijay Hazare Trophy for his state Bengal and took one wicket in each of the matches.
Before that, Shami had played nine games in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) T20 cup - taking 11 wickets in total with a best of 3/21.
Shami's comeback, whenever happens, will be a boost for India as he was the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup 2023. He had come in place of Hardik Pandya after the all-rounder got injured and played pivotal role in India reaching the final with 24 wickets in seven games.

Champions Trophy: Mohammed Shami 'All Set to Take on the World'

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has expressed his surprise at the Indian team management for their handling of Mohammed Shami's injury, stressing that the pacer should have been with the squad for the just-concluded 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) versus Australia. In Shami's absence, India lost the series 1-3, and the bowling workload fell completely on Jasprit Bumrah. While Bumrah ended with most wickets (32), he lacked support from the other end on most occasions.
Shami has not played an international game since the 2023 ODI World Cup final. Since then, he has been out of action due to ankle and knee concerns. While he returned to domestic cricket just ahead of the Australia tour, knee issues again did not permit him to not join the squad for the latter part of the series. Shastri, however, stated that he was 'very surprised with the communication going on' and would've added Shami to the squad had he been the coach.
<h2>'I was very surprised with the communication going on in the media'</h2>
Shastri told ICC, "To be honest, I was very surprised with the communication going on in the media as to what exactly happened to Mohammed Shami. I would have kept him part of the team and made sure that his rehabilitation was done with the team."

"But I would have brought him with the team, kept him, monitored him with the best of the physios and best of the advice even from international physios who are in Australia and seeing how he went. But I would have kept him in the mix."
Before the Australia tour, Rohit&nbsp;emphasised the importance of ensuring Shami was 100 per cent fit to avoid the risk of further injuries. While the cautious approach was understandable, it did cost India in the BGT as Bumrah was the lone warrior with the ball (claiming 32 scalps). Although Mohammed Siraj improved during the last few Tests, the experience of Shami was surely missed by the visitors Down Under.

BGT: 'Very surprised', Ravi Shastri slams Indian team management's handling of Mohammed Shami's injury

Mumbai, India
India pacer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out from a return in the last two Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series Tests against Australia. The development was shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (Dec 23), three days prior to the fourth BGT Test which starts on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The news comes as a setback to India which are struggling in pace department as no pacer barring Jasprit Bumrah has been able to contain the Aussies - especially Travis Head.

Shami returned to the competitive cricket in November earlier this year in a domestic Ranji Trophy match for his state Bengal. Shami had gotten injured during the ICC ODI World Cup Final 2023 on November 19.
After playing the lone Ranji match, Shami also played nine games in domestic T20 tournament Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) as well.
While Shami has completely recovered from this heel problem suffered in ODI WC Final 2023, his right knee is creating a bit of a problem.
"His left knee has exhibited minor swelling due to increased joint loading from his bowling workload. The swelling is on the expected lines, owing to the increased bowling after a prolonged period," read the BCCI statement.
"Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. Consequently, he has not been deemed fit for consideration for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy," it further read.
It has been a miserable situation for Indian bowlers apart from Bumrah, who has taken series-leading 18 wickets so far. All the other Indian bowlers used in the series so far have 22 wickets collectively, with Mohammed Siraj taking 11 of them.
With no Mohammed Shami available, Bumrah has been waging the lone battle against Australia with two five-for and one four-for and an economy rate of 2.57 with a strike rate of 27.33.
The five-match series, however, stands equal at 1-1 with two matches still left.

Gabba, Brisbane
Mohammed Shami has resumed bowling but remains uncertain of a Test call-up for the remainder of the BGT Down Under. Following the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane, which ended in a draw, all thanks to countless and continuous rain interruptions throughout, India captain Rohit Sharma broke his silence on Shami’s potential return to the side for the remaining two matches at the MCG and SCG, respectively.
Rohit said the ball is in the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, formerly the National Cricket Academy (NCA) court, to clarify his fitness concerns. Although Shami returned last month for Bengal playing the Ranji Trophy and has since played several games across formats, including in SMAT, Rohit said there were complaints about his knee causing concerns, which restricts him from considering his India call-up.
The right-arm seamer is also picked in the Bengal squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy starting December 21.

"About Shami, I think it's high time somebody from NCA talks about him, where he is rehabbing. Those guys are the ones who need to come up and give us some kind of update,” Rohit said at the post-match presser in Brisbane.
<h2>Fit Shami better than risking his return</h2>
The Indian skipper said he knows that Shami has returned to playing domestic cricket back home following an extended hiatus but remains cautious of a possible recurrence of an injury, which remains a bigger concern to Shami’s future than he re-linking with the Indian Team in Australia and help them complete the three-peat.
"I understand he's playing a lot of cricket back home, but there have been some complaints about his knee as well. So, look, the last thing you want is the player coming here and then pulling out in the middle of the game. You know what happens when that kind of thing happens."
"So, there is no way we want to take that chance unless we are like, not 100%, 200% sure, we're not going to take any risk. But yeah, like I said in the last press conference, the door is open if those guys at the NCA feel that he is okay to go and recover and play, we'll be happy to have him,” Rohit continued.
Meanwhile, as things stand, the BCCI’s medical team is yet to clear Shami of any discomfort, something even Rohit picked upon following the Pink-Ball Test in Adelaide.
Though Shami’s comeback looks unlikely given three Tests against Australia are already over, he could be handy for the ODI side in the Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled for the February-March window.

India pacer Mohammed Shami continues to impress upon his return to competitive cricket while playing for Bengal in domestic cricket. The bowler played for the first time about a month ago since getting injured in the ICC ODI World Cup final on November 19, 2023.&nbsp;

Since his return, he has played one four-day Ranji game and eight T20s in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), taking 16 wickets in total.

Shami has also bowled his full quota of four overs in all eight SMAT games, further proving that the bowler is almost 100 per cent fit for his much-awaited international return.

The pacer was expected to be back for the three-Test home series against New Zealand, which India lost 0-3, but wasn't named in the squad. He then was expected to be named in the India squad for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) squad, but the team management decided otherwise.

Shami's absence has been visible for India in the first two BGT Tests, with India winning one and losing one. More importantly, India are desperate for a pacer to compliment Jasprit Bumrah, who has been outstanding so far with 12 wickets in two games.

While Mohammed Siraj has played his part with nine wickets in two games, he largely fits the bill of a third pacer but has been pushed to frontline pair with Bumrah in Shami's absence.

India's third pacer, Harshit Rana, while being impressive, has failed to make a huge impact given the inexperience, and that's why Shami's return is awaited more than ever.

India skipper Rohit Sharma, after the loss in the second Test, also spoke on the possibility of the pacer joining the India squad in Australia and said, "We want to be more than 100% sure with him because it has been a long time. We don't want to put pressure on him to come here and do the job for the team. There are some professionals monitoring, we will take a call based on what those guys feel."

BGT 2024-25: With every SMAT game, Mohammed Shami gets an inch closer to much-needed Test return for India

India Test captain Rohit Sharma addressed rumours of ace seamer Mohammed Shami linking up with the BGT-bound squad any time during the remainder of the series. Rohit expressed concerns about Shami's fitness, adding that the team would welcome him with open arms should he get clearance from the NCA.

Shami was out of action for around one year following an ankle injury during the 2023 home ODI World Cup. He returned to competitive cricket last month, playing for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, and is currently plying his trade for his state Bengal in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.&nbsp;

Though Shami declared himself 100% match-fit ahead of the BGT during a promotional event, a last-minute lapse in his rehab forced the selectors to drop him from the marquee Tests Down Under.

Speaking to the media after the end of the second Test in Adelaide, which the hosts won by 10 wickets, Rohit shed light on Shami’s potential return to the Test side with three matches remaining.

"We are just monitoring him because while playing Syed Mushtaq Ali, he got some swelling in his knee, which hampers his preparation to come and play a Test match. We want to be very careful, we don't want to bring him here, he pulls up sore or something happens.

They are the ones watching him every game, how he pulls up after the game, after bowling four overs, standing for 20 overs. But the door is open for him to come and play anytime,” Rohit said of Shami in Adelaide.&nbsp;

<h2>Shami closing in on complete fitness</h2>

Shami is back in the domestic circuit but hasn’t hit the right notes yet. Since picking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh in his first competitive game on his return, the right-arm seamer has featured in seven SMAT matches, returning with eight wickets.&nbsp;

Though there is no official confirmation on Shami’s return, should he stay fit and suffer no setback on his road to recovery, he could soon be on the flight to Australia.

BGT: Rohit hints at Mohammed Shami's addition to Test squad after Adelaide mauling, says 'door very much open'

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami is currently playing domestic matches while continuing his rehab at the NCA in Bengaluru, and former India coach Ravi Shastri reckons he is nearing his return to the Indian Team. Though the NCA has yet to clear Shami for his availability for Tests Down Under, Shastri feels Shami will join the Indian Team in Australia sometime for the final two Tests at the MCG and SCG.

India missed Shami dearly in the first innings of the second Test in Adelaide, with Jasprit Bumrah shouldering all the burden. The premier seamer has been on the song since the start of this BGT, picking eight wickets in Perth and four in the pink-ball game at the Adelaide Oval. Though Siraj also returned with four wickets in the first innings, including removing centurion Travis Head on 140, Rana went wicketless, besides going for over five runs per over.

Meanwhile, Shami, who missed all international cricket action since the conclusion of the home ODI World Cup last year with an ankle injury, is working on attaining full fitness. The right-arm seamer came close to getting picked for the home Tests against New Zealand and away BGT, but a last-minute lapse in his rehab resulted in selectors dropping him for both series.

Speaking about Shami’s return to the Indian Team and chances of him sharing the workload with Bumrah in the remaining three Tests, Shastri said the Brisbane Test could be early (with the third Test starting December 14) but he can be available for selection for the final two Tests at the MCG and SCG, respectively.

<h2>Gabba early but MCG a possibility</h2>

“Quicker Mohammed Shami reaches here, (the) better (it is) for India. He is playing a lot of domestic matches,” Shastri said during commentary in the second Test in Adelaide. “You can see the pressure (on the opposition) when Bumrah is bowling and others are bowling. There is a lot of pressure on Bumrah.”

“Brisbane might be too early, but surely (Shami can be available for) Melbourne and Sydney,” Shastri continued.

Meanwhile, Shami is plying his trade in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Bengal. In the past 13 days, he featured in seven matches for his state side, picking five wickets.&nbsp;

Moreover, should Shami remain out of contention over fitness issues for the remaining BGT matches, India has plenty of options waiting in the wings, including Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep Singh, with Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini also available.&nbsp;

India's Mohammed Shami injured again? Pacer offers update in social media post

The Indian captain for the Perth Test against Australia, Jasprit Bumrah, dropped a major hint at Mohammed Shami’s potential return to the Test side amid fitness concerns.&nbsp;

Shami missed all on-field action since last year's home World Cup due to an ankle injury and resumed competitive cricket last week, playing for Bengal in the prestigious Ranji Trophy tournament, picking seven wickets against Madhya Pradesh. Though he showed glimpses of a full-fit Shami by bowling tight lines during his comeback game, the right-arm seamer is closing in on returning to his best, with the Indian Team management keeping a keen eye on it.&nbsp;

Speaking on the same on the sidelines of the first BGT Test at the Optus Stadium starting Friday (Nov 22), India skipper Bumrah said,&nbsp;"Shami bhai has started to play cricket, and obviously, he is an integral part of this team. I'm sure the management is also keeping a keen eye (on him). Hopefully, things fall in place. If everything goes well, you might see him here as well," Bumrah noted in the pre-match presser in Perth.

Meanwhile, Bumrah is leading India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, who is in India with his family after the birth of his second child. Rohit will link up with the Indian Team ahead of the second Test in Adelaide, a Day-Night Test game, starting December 6.

Per several reports, the BCCI and the management are keen on having Shami on board at some point during this marquee five-match series, concluding with the final Test at the SCG in Sydney early next year. Should Shami attain full fitness in the meantime, he would likely get added to the Test side, increasing his chances of playing his first away BGT game since breaking his wrist in Adelaide the last time.

<h2>Rana, Ashwin to play in Perth</h2>

Owing to an injury crisis and unavailability of some star players, the visitors could play a new-look Indian Team in the BGT opener, with several reports claiming two uncapped players to make the cut. While all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is one name everyone’s praising, the sources close to the information claim that lanky pacer Harshit Rana could also make his Test debut.

Besides, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, India’s highest wicket-taker in this attack, will play ahead of two bowling all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar.&nbsp;

Also, in the absence of Shubman Gill, who is out with a broken thumb, India will likely play Devdutt Padikkal at number three, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal to open. Outside of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in the middle order, India might play Dhruv Jurel ahead of Sarfaraz Khan at number six; simultaneously, Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj spearhead the pace attack.

Australian opener Usman Khawaja feels Jasprit Bumrah’s awkward action makes him lethal but warns his side about India having plenty in their pace battery to offer than just him. With the first BGT Test starting in Perth in less than 10 days, Khawaja talked about how, at first, it’s difficult to face Bumrah, but with time of getting used to facing him, it mellows down, though the threat remains always.

Bumrah is perhaps the best bowler across formats, and with him leading the pace attack this time Down Under, he’d again be a thorn in the flesh for the Aussies.

"I mean, when you first face him, it's just his action. It's a different, bizarre kind of action as his release point is very different than other bowlers," Khawaja said of Bumrah on Fox Cricket, who has bowled 155 deliveries to the Aussie batter across seven Test innings but never dismissed him.&nbsp;

"It's just a bit further up. So, a lot of guys release the ball from near the popping crease. [Against Bumrah] It feels like he gets a bit further out just with his front-braced leg and pushes the ball out."

"So, it feels like it comes out and then gets there a lot quicker than you expect it. It's just once you get used to the action, it's fine. I played against him a lot. Not to say that he can't give me out first ball. I mean anyone can. But it's one of those things where once, the first time you face him, it's very awkward, and then when you get a little bit of rhythm, it gets better. But he's still a class bowler,” Khawaja continued.

<h2>Khawaja praises India’s pace battery</h2>

Even though India will be without its most experienced seamer, Mohammed Shami, in this Test series, they still have Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna and uncapped Harshit Rana to divide the workload alongside Bumrah. Praising Indian quicks, Khawaja said, "Everyone talks about Jasprit, but they actually have a lot of other good bowlers."

"I think [Mohammed] Siraj is a very good bowler. He's a very good bowler to both right-handers and left-handers. When [Mohammed] Shami was fit, when he was playing those series, he was a very good bowler. He was very underrated. No one really talked about him. And then they got good spinners lining up, too, which really complements their fast bowlers."

Explaining his thought process while facing Bumrah, Khawaja said instead of thinking about how to not get out to him, he’d look for ways to score runs against him. &nbsp;

"So for me, it's never ... I'm just not thinking about Jasprit Bumrah. You want to ask me where do you think... I'm not thinking about where he is getting me out. I'm thinking about where am I scoring runs against him,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Khawaja will open with debutant Nathan McSweeney in the Perth Test against India.&nbsp;

BGT 2024/25: ‘India’s pace attack is lot more than just Jasprit Bumrah,’ says Usman Khawaja

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami is back doing what he does best—picking wickets. On his competitive return to cricket for the first time in around a year, Shami bagged four wickets for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in the ongoing Ranji Trophy tie on Thursday (Nov. 14). After going wicketless in his 10-over spell on day one, Shami picked four in his next on day two, dismissing MP on 167.

The right-arm seamer accounted for MP Captain Shubham Sharma and lower-order batters, including Saransh Jain and Kumar Kartikeya, helping Bengal maintain a 61-run lead.&nbsp;

Despite Shami’s clinical performance in his return game, his participation in the forthcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains uncertain. At the time when the BCCI named the 18-man squad for the marquee Australia Tests, Shami, who in the lead-up to the announcement declared himself 100% match-fit, having bowled full throttle following the first two Tests against New Zealand, failed to make the cut due to fitness concerns.&nbsp;

Following the conclusion of the final Test in Mumbai, Rohit addressed Shami’s absence from the BGT squad, claiming everyone concerned took a collective call as they didn’t want to have an under-cooked Shami for five Tests Down Under.

Meanwhile, should Shami attain full match fitness in the two Ranji matches he is scheduled to play in, chances of him linking up with the India Test squad for the Australia series could rise; however, neither the board nor the management has hinted about it.&nbsp;

<h2>Shami’s rise and injury</h2>

Shami wasn’t India’s first-choice seamer for the opening few games in the home World Cup last year but got included in the playing XI following an injury to all-rounder Hardik Pandya in the Bangladesh tie.&nbsp;

The right-arm seamer played the New Zealand tie and wreaked havoc till the end, picking 24 wickets from seven contested matches, including a seven-wicket haul against the Kiwis in the semis in Mumbai. Though he removed David Warner on the second ball in the final, Shami failed to guide his team across the winning line.

That, however, was his last on-field appearance as an ankle injury ruled him out for the next 10-12 months.&nbsp;

Mohammed Shami picks 4 wickets for Bengal in Ranji Trophy, announces return in style

There is a big boost for India ahead of the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which commences in Australia on Nov 22, as Mohammed Shami has been named in Bengal's Ranji Trophy squad for their match versus Madhya Pradesh. Bengal's next clash in the premier domestic tournament is on Nov 13, in Indore, where they take on MP and Shami is set to play his first competitive game since the 2023 ODI World Cup. Following the mega event, he has been plagued with several injuries which has kept him out of cricketing action. If Shami plays without any pain, he could be a late entry into Inda's Test squad for the Australia series.

Shami's fitness was closely monitored ahead of the BGT, which starts later this month with the first Test in Perth. Just before the squad was picked, Shami had mentioned that he was hoping to make a comeback and take the flight to Australia after making a few appearances in the Ranji Trophy. However, the wily pacer can only play a solitary red-ball game to prove his fitness as the 2024/25 edition is split into two. Thus,&nbsp;there is only one round before the white-ball tournaments get underway.

Shami&nbsp;has been sidelined for a long time. He had to initially undergo surgery for an Achilles heel injury, which troubled him during the home ODI WC (where he ended with the most wickets -- 24). Further, he suffered a setback while in recovery with swelling in his knees.

Shami's comeback for Bengal will be closely monitored with India's tour of Australia set to begin soon.&nbsp;If he bowls without any discomfort, the 34-year-old can be a late addition to India's squad for the upcoming Test series Down Under.

Big boost for India before Australia Tests! Mohammed Shami named in Bengal squad for Ranji Trophy tie vs MP

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting feels Mohammed Shami's absence will be a 'huge loss' for India in the upcoming 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT)&nbsp;starting on Nov. 22 in Perth. India are set to play Australia in a five-match Test series with pacer Mohammed Shami not part of the 18-man squad. Shami has been out of cricketing action since 2023 ODI World Cup, where he ended with most wickets (24). Since then, he has had injury concerns -- mainly ankle and knee issues -- and will mark his return to competitive cricket in Bengal's upcoming Ranji Trophy tie versus Madhya Pradesh, in Indore, on Nov. 13. He will aim to bowl without any discomfort to be a late addition to India's Test squad.&nbsp;

At present, Shami is not part of the Indian squad and Ponting feels it will be a huge loss for the visitors if he misses the entire series. Speaking in a video shared by the ICC on Instagram, Punter said, "The big omission is Shami not being fit. I think that's a huge loss for India. He’s been one of the leading fast bowlers in the world for the last three or four years, and mainly with the red ball. His one-day record’s been very good, but what he's been able to do home and away with the red ball in Test cricket has been quite phenomenal."

He further added, "You talk to all the players that face him as well; they talk about how hard and difficult he is. And then, when you think about where the first two Tests are with Perth and Adelaide, he’d be perfectly suited to bowling in those conditions. So, I think that’s the only real chink in the armour."

The visitors are likely to be without regular captain Rohit Sharma for the series opener in Perth. Reportedly, he will be out on paternity leave, hence, Jasprit Bumrah will lead in his absence. Meanwhile, if Shami doesn't show any signs of pain in his upcoming Ranji game, he might be included in Test squad.&nbsp;

BGT 2024/25: ‘Players will tell you...,’ Ponting feels Shami’s absence is ‘real chink in the armour for India’

Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami’s return date to competitive cricket takes a back seat after the Bengal seamer failed to make the cut in the Ranji Trophy squad for Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh games. Shami declared himself 100% match-fit last month, giving hopes of breaking into the Test squad for the marquee Border-Gavaskar series; however, the selectors decided against picking him, with the Indian captain admitting that taking undercooked Shami Down Under would do no good to the travelling side.

"I had been bowling with half a run-up on and off since I can't put too much stress on my body. So, we decided that I would bowl properly, and I gave my 100%. "It felt great, and the results are good. Hopefully, I'll be back on track soon," Shami said during a promotional event last month.&nbsp;

Shami had suffered an ankle injury during the home ODI World Cup last year, and was India’s top wicket-taker with 24 scalps in seven contested matches&nbsp;though he played with injury till the final. Picked for South Africa Tests later, Shami withdrew his name, with doctors not clearing him for on-field return.

The right-arm seamer underwent ankle surgery earlier this year in London and has been recovering and training at the NCA in Bengaluru since. Having missed all cricket action since November last year, Shami was in line for a comeback ahead of the Australia series. But before the selectors could rope him into the Test squad for New Zealand Tests, he suffered a setback in his recovery, delaying his return to competitive cricket.&nbsp;

The selectors, team management and even the fans kept their fingers crossed over Shami’s fitness; however, upon reviewing his recovery pace, the selectors decided against naming him in the 18-man squad for the BGT.

<h2>No Shami for Bengal</h2>

Shami was expected to start for Bengal in their next two Ranji Trophy fixtures, against Karnataka on November 6 and Madhya Pradesh on November 13. But his absence from the squad indicates that the India bowler hasn’t completely recovered from his injury and might take longer to get back onto the field.

Mohammed Shami to wait longer for cricket comeback after Bengal Ranji Trophy squad snub

Ace Indian seamer Mohammed Shami missed out on making the 18-man squad for the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia starting November 22 in Perth. The BCCI selectors named a star-studded pace attack, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the bunch. Though Shami declared himself 100% match-fit during a promotional event in Gurugram the past week, the selectors decided against rushing him into playing Test cricket.

However, the latest reports suggest that all is not over for India quick, as he may link up with the BGT-bound Test squad midway into the Australia series after proving match fitness.&nbsp;

The right-arm seamer began bowling in the nets following the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru; after the second game ended in Pune, he resumed training, bowling to India batter Shubman Gill at full throttle.

The report also suggested that Shami aims to play two Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal against Karnataka in Bengaluru on November 6 and against Madhya Pradesh in Indore, commencing on November 13. Should he clear the match fitness criteria, the Indian pacer will link up with the Test team ahead of the third Test at the Gabba in Brisbane starting December 14.

“Yes, we have heard that Shami may join the Bengal team for the Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka, as the side will be coming to Bengaluru, where he’s already training, preparing to his absolute best and doing his bowling practice at the NCA. Everyone around him has been working hard to ensure he hopefully gets to play the game against Karnataka from November 6.”

“The parameters NCA people could observe for him would be around the number of overs he bowls, and how his recovery process is after being out on the field for a day or even after featuring in all four days of the Ranji Trophy games. If all of the processes with regards to him go well, then one probably may see him be with the Indian team from the Brisbane Test happening from December 14-18,” a source close to the information said, as quoted by News18.

The Indian fast bowler wreaked havoc during the home World Cup last year, picking 24 wickets in just seven games, averaging 10.71. He bagged his career-best figures of 7/59 against New Zealand in Mumbai in the semis but failed to guide his team home against Australia in the summit clash.

Meanwhile, alongside Bumrah, Shami remains India’s top bowler across formats, with Test being his standout one. In 64 matches played thus far, Shami has picked 229 wickets, averaging close to 28.&nbsp;

The BCCI selectors named a star-studded pace attack, with Jasprit Bumrah leading the bunch. Though Shami declared himself 100% match-fit during a promotional event in Gurugram the past week, the selectors decided against rushing him into playing Test cricket. However, the latest reports suggest that all is not over for India quick, as he may link up with the BGT-bound Test squad midway into the Australia series after proving match fitness. The right-arm seamer began bowling in the nets following the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru; after the second game ended in Pune, he resumed training, bowling to India batter Shubman Gill at full throttle. pic.twitter.com/nNHEPjlcF1 — 𝕸𝖔𝖍𝖆𝖒𝖒𝖆𝖉 𝖘𝖍𝖆𝖒𝖎 (@MdShami11) October 25, 2024 × The report also suggested that Shami aims to play two Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal against Karnataka in Bengaluru on November 6 and against Madhya Pradesh in Indore, commencing on November 13. All not over for Mohammed Shami as India quick may link up with squad midway into Australian tour – Reports

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald thinks that India are going to miss pacer Mohammed Shami on their upcoming five-Test tour of Australia. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) didn't name Shami in India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy squad due to injury.

"Mohammed Shami is a big loss," said McDonald while talking on ABC's Offsiders.&nbsp;

“The way our batters speak about his relentless nature, his line and lengths, the way he goes about his business, a real good complimenting skill set to (Jasprit) Bumrah so think that one-two combo they'll lack a little bit, and they'll miss that,” he added.

The Aussie head coach, however, was wary of the fact that India won on their last tour of Australia without Shami.

“Needless to say we saw what happened last time, they had reserves that came in and did the job as well so they cannot be underestimated at all,” McDonald added.

India have named Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, Mohammed Siraj as main pacers along with Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana. India also named medium-pace all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy in the squad apart from Navdeep Saini, Mukesh Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed in reserves.

India's tour of Australia begins on 22 November in Perth before the day-night second Test in Adelaide from December 6-10. The third Test will be played at the Gabba in Brisbane from 14-18 December before the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from December 26-30. The last and final Test will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) from Jan 3-7.&nbsp;
