Virat Kohli's shocking decision to leave India's Test captaincy has become one of the major talking points in world cricket. Kohli announced his decision on social media on Saturday (January 15) following India's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa.

Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has named an Indian batter who he feels can replace Kohli as the next skipper of the Indian Test team. Gavaskar snubbed both KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, who are among strong contenders to replace Kohli as the new Test skipper and backed Rishabh Pant to be handed over the baton.

Gavaskar, who had earlier backed KL Rahul to be the vice-captain in the longest format, feels selectors will have to engage in a long debate on whom to appoint as the next Test skipper of the side. The batting legend feels Pant can be an ideal candidate for captaincy considering he is a regular across all formats and has the leadership qualities.

"It's going to be quite a debate as far as the selection committee is concerned as to who should be taking Indian cricket forward. First of all, it should be someone who is an automatic pick across all formats of the game. Once that happens, it will be a lot easier. If you ask me, I am still staying, I would look at Rishabh Pant as the next India captain,” Gavaskar said on India Today.

Pant has been a consistent performer for India in Tests over the last few years and has scored runs in all sorts of conditions. After being criticised for throwing away his wicket in the second innings of the second Test against South Africa, Pant silenced his critics with a stunning unbeaten century in the recently-concluded third Test. He scored an unbeaten 100 off 139 balls, however, his efforts went in vain as South Africa won the decider by seven wickets to take the series 2-1.

Pant has been backed by many as a future superstar of the Indian team but has been often criticised for throwing his wicket away with careless batting at crucial junctures. However, Gavaskar believes the added responsibility of captaining the side can help inspire a change in his approach.

"For one reason only, just like Rohit Sharma was given the captaincy of Mumbai Indians when Ricky Ponting stepped down, look at the change in his batting after that. Suddenly the responsibility of being captain made him convert those beautiful cameos of 30s, 40s and 50s into hundreds, 150s and 200s. I think that sense of responsibility given to Rishabh Pant will help him score many more of that wonderful hundred he scored at Newlands," Gavaskar explained.

Not Rohit or Rahul! Sunil Gavaskar names player who should replace Virat Kohli as India's next Test captain

Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa, at Newlands, Cape Town, was another topsy-turvy battle between both sides in the series finale. As India started the day at 57-2, with an overall lead of 70 runs, Rishabh Pant's unbeaten 100 enabled India to setup a tricky 212-run target for the Dean Elgar-led Proteas.

While SA ended the day's play at 101 for 2, with both the openers Aiden Markram and Captain Elgar back in the pavillion, there was a huge controversy which erupted when Elgar survived a very close LBW call. The Proteas captain was given out by the on-field umpire, Marais Erasmus, after being trapped plumb in front by R Ashwin. However, Elgar took the decision upstairs where replays showed that the ball had hit the left-hander below the knee, however, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Thus, Elgar breathed a sigh of relief by getting a reprieve at that time (he eventually fell for 30 before close of play).

Thus, this led to a huge controversy as Indian players -- such as Captain Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ashwin -- didn't mince their words and showed their frustration in the middle.

"Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition,” Kohli said as he walked up to the stump mic after Ashwin and Rahul also expressed their displeasure over the ball-tracking system.

The 33-year-old Kohli went too far ahead and even mocked the broadcaster 'SuperSport', claiming that they were doing what they could to help the home side.

Thus, former SA batter Daryll Cullinan came down heavily on Captain Kohli. He feels the Indian star batter has for too long got away with his overaggressive behaviour on-field.

“This is the typical Virat untouchable! He behaves the way he wants to behave. The rest of the cricket world just bows down to Virat. The powerhouse is India. I hate to say this but it’s been going on for years. It’s just the big suck up towards India and anybody who plays for India. They are untouchable, so everyone will laugh it off,” the former South African told ESPNCricinfo.

“I love Virat Kohli, I love his cricket, I love the way he plays. But there has to be a line drawn somewhere to say ‘hang on, you must be severely punished’. If anything, it was a mistake. I just cannot believe that they could think along those sort of lines. For too long Virat has got away with behavior which is unacceptable on a cricket field. But he’s Kohli and I don’t like it, quite frankly," he added.

Former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar also agreed with Cullinal and feels that the Indian team's comments were extremely serious.

“There was an insinuation from the Indian camp that the host broadcasters were up to some mischief to make sure they were putting their own team at an advantage. That is a serious kind of insinuation. I have a problem with that,” Manjrekar said.

“Virat Kohli is going through one of the most difficult phases of his career. He lost his ODI captaincy, there has been some controversy over that. This is the first time that I am seeing self-doubts have started creeping in. We saw it during the IPL as well. Never thought this guy would be under-confident,” he added.

Many former cricketers and experts of the game have slammed Team India for their approach on the entire DRS controversy. After the DRS incident, India lost the plot on the field during the fag end of Day 3 by leaking runs at will as SA ended the day's play at 101-2, chasing 212.

Kohli must be severely punished: Ex-SA batter shares his take on DRS controversy in Cape Town Test

India lost the third and final Test versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town on Friday (January 14). Day 4 commenced with South Africa in the driver's seat, at 101-2 in pursuit of 212, as Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma completed the formalities for the home side to win by 7 wickets and claim the series 2-1.

The series had plenty of moments as both sides showed a lot of character, grit and determination to emerge on top. Thus, the three-match Test series was intensely and Day 3 of the final Test was a prove of it. After Rishabh Pant's unbeaten ton propelled India to setup a 212-run target for the home side, Dean Elgar survived a very close lbw call during the fag end of the day's proceedings, off R Ashwin's bowling.

After being given out initially by the on-field umpire, Elgar referred the decision upstairs. While the replays showed that the ball had hit the batter below the knee, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Hence, he managed to survive as Indian players expressed their frustration without mincing their words.

Captain Kohli said on the stump-mic, "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time."

Meanwhile, KL Rahul was heard saying, “Whole country playing against XI guys," whereas the 35-year-old Ashwin and said, "You should find better ways to win Supersport (the host broadcaster)."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has now commented on the DRS controversy and lashed out at Team India for their rant on-field. He told Fox Sports, “I think that is disgraceful from the Indians personally. Decisions go with you, they go against you, that didn’t go the way they think it should have gone. Virat Kohli is a legend of the game, but that’s not the way to act, that is not the way to act in a game of Test match cricket."

“The ICC have to stamp this down, they have to stamp down on the Indian side, you can’t get away with talking down the stump microphone like Ravi Ashwin has done and the Indian captain has done," added the ex-England skipper.

From Rahul to Hardik: 6 players who can be picked by new teams and not enter IPL 2022 auction pool

India and South Africa are involved in a thrilling third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town. The entire series has been a topsy-turvy ride with both teams leaving no stone unturned and not allowing the other to dictate terms from the word go.

While KL Rahul, Captain Virat Kohli, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant have done well during the course of the series for the Rahul Dravid-coached Indian team, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. haven't done anything extra ordinary. Talking about Mayank, the right-hander started the tour with a fine 60 in the first innings of the series opener, however, he couldn't capitalise on any of the following outings to return with scores of 9, 17, 3, and 7.

Thus, former Indian fast-bowling all-rounder Ajit Agarkar opened up on Mayank's struggles overseas and said was quoted as saying by News18, "He has wasted a chance because he started the series well. It is not easy when Rabada is in such a good rhythm, the way he was bowling, but he [Mayank] has technical faults. He gets out in the same way and he will get more exposed, especially, in overseas conditions."

"He could have done very little with this ball because it was close to the off-stump on a good length, moved away slightly after pitching, and bounced as well. Mayank Agarwal has not played much in overseas conditions either because he is the third or fourth opener," Agarkar further mentioned.

Given that the likes of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill missed the SA Tests due to injury concerns, Mayank would be gutted to have not made a bigger contribution with the bat in the ongoing series, in the rainbow nation.

He has technical faults, will get more exposed in overseas conditions: Agarkar opines on Indian batter

Team India locked horns with South Africa on Day 1 of the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). The opening day was also head coach Rahul Dravid's birthday as the former Indian captain turned 49.

On Dravid's birthday, Virat Kohli-led India won the toss and opted to bat first in Cape Town. Riding on skipper Kohli's gritty 79, the visitors managed only a below-par 223 in the first innings before the Dean Elgar-led hosts went to stumps at 13-1, trailing the Indian team by 210 runs. While the day wasn't an ideal one for Team India, with the batters once again failing to capitalise on starts and score big, the atmosphere in the dressing room was jubilant as the national side's players celebrated Dravid's birthday in style after end of proceedings.

Pictures of Dravid cutting his birthday cake and the likes of Rishabh Pant, Cheteshwar Pujara, Umesh Yadav, batting coach Vikram Rathour, etc. being around the birthday man went viral. Pacer Mohammed Shami shared images of the celebration on his official Twitter handle.

[PICS] Team India players celebrate head coach Rahul Dravid's 49th birthday after Day 1 of 3rd Test

Team India have been dealt with a major blow as star all-rounder Washington Sundar has tested positive for Covid-19. The star player has been out of action from international cricket for over 10 months. Major setback for KL Rahul-led Team India as star player tests positive ahead of SA ODIs

Virat Kohli-led India have locked horns with South Africa in the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). With the series interestingly poised at 1-1, there's all to play for both sides in the deciding encounter. For the unversed, Kohli & Co. are on the cusp of winning their maiden Test series on South African soil if they end with a scoreline of 2-1.

While India won the toss and opted to bat first, the onus fell on KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. The two openers have been in form and were involved in a century-stand on Day 1 of the series opener, in Centurion, but failed to score big in the first innings.

Both Rahul and Mayank would have been gutted to miss out on scoring big after getting a start. The duo were involved in a 31-run opening stand before Duanne Olivier removed Rahul whereas Kagiso Rabada accounted for Mayank's scalp.

At the coin toss, Kohli told the broadcasters, "Runs on this venue have always worked out well. I am fit and fine. I come in for Vihari. Siraj misses out because of a niggle and Umesh comes in for him. Umesh has been very potent with the ball recently, very handy in the field and with the bat as well. It was a tough decision to choose between the two (Ishant and Umesh). We are expected to win every Test even when we play overseas and that fourth innings chase from South Africa was a special one from them. It is a beautiful stadium and we are very excited."

SAvsIND: When and where to watch South Africa vs India 3rd Test match - IST time and streaming details

KL Rahul led India in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers in Johannesburg after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the game due to a back spasm. It was Rahul's debut Test as the captain of the Indian team as he failed to inspire the visitors to a victory against the Proteas. India lost the Test match by seven wickets after failing to defend the total of 239 runs during South Africa's second innings.

With the win, South Africa levelled the three-match series 1-1 making the final third Test a decider for both teams. Former India opener Gautam Gambhir reckoned India missed regular skipper Kohli in the second Test not just as a batter but also as a leader. Gambhir explained why batters like Kohli can't be replaced by anyone despite them undergoing a rough patch with the willow.

"We definitely missed Virat Kohli the batsman. Steve Smith, Joe Root, Kane Williamson, Rohit Sharma, these are the type of batters you miss. And it is difficult to find their replacement, no matter what form they are in, because the expectation remains that they will score those big runs," said Gambhir on Star Sports.

"But Kohli the captain, we missed him as well because he is so experienced and things turn simpler for experienced captains because they have been around for long,” he added.

In the series-opener, Kohli had failed to notch up big scores with the bat but was exceptional as a captain on the pitch as he powered the visitors to a thumping win to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Gambhir believes Rahul will need time to learn and should be a quick learner as Test cricket is not as easy as ODIs and T20Is.

"But KL Rahul, the more time he spends, the better he will learn, but the faster he learns the better it is. This is not like ODI or T20I captaincy, which is far easier because you don't have to focus much on-field placements. In Test cricket you need to buy the wickets, sometimes even gamble with your choices," said the former India opener.

"Like in the case of Bavuma, had he placed three slips instead of keeping one at the cover and tempt him into playing the drive maybe there could have been an opportunity for caught behind. But he kept a deep point which was a defensive mindset and it is something that he should be told about. You need to be an aggressive captain, not by attitude, but with your field placements,” he explained.

India will be looking to bounce back to winning ways when they lock horns with South Africa in the third and final Test which gets underway from January 11. The series is currently locked at 1-1 with India one win away from securing their maiden Test series victory in South Africa.

'Difficult to find a replacement': Gambhir explains why India missed Kohli in Johannesburg Test against SA

The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is all set to be a grand affair this year with as many as ten teams battling it out for a number of top players who will be going under the hammer at the showpiece event. While the existing eight teams have already revealed their final retentions, the two new franchises - Lucknow and Ahmedabad can make three picks each from the pool of non-retained players.

Barring the players picked by Ahmedabad and Lucknow in the draft, all others will be heading to the mega auction. Several big Indian names, who have not been retained by their respective IPL sides will be up for grabs at the mega auction. Here we take a look at five Indian stars who are likely to fetch a huge amount at the IPL 2022 mega player auction.

KL Rahul

One of the favourites to captain the Lucknow IPL franchise in the 2022 season, former Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul is unlikely to head into the auction pool as he is expected to be picked in the players draft ahead of the event. Rahul is reportedly set to join Lucknow and has been offered a staggering contract.

He has been one of the most consistent performers in the IPL over the last few seasons and has been among the runs. Rahul was recently appointed as India's limited-overs vice-captain and is seen as a future leader of the national team as well. He has so far played 94 IPL matches and has an impressive 3273 runs to his name at an average of over 47.

Hardik Pandya

Mumbai Indians had to let go of their star all-rounder Hardik Pandya ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction owing to his recent fitness issues and concerns regarding his bowling. Hardik, who has played an instrumental role in Mumbai Indians' success over the years, didn't bowl at all in IPL 2021 as he continues to deal with his back issues which have hampered his progress.

Hardik had been retained for a sum of Rs 11 crore (110 million) by Mumbai Indians in 2018 and is expected to go for big money once again if he heads to the auction pool. However, there is a strong chance that the all-rounder is picked by one of the two new teams - Lucknow or Ahmedabad before the auction for a huge sum.

Shreyas Iyer

Shreyas Iyer's rise in the Indian Premier League has been nothing short of extraordinary. From a young batting talent, Iyer matured into a fine leader for the Delhi Capitals after he was handed over captaincy midway into the IPL 2018 season. He led DC to their first-ever final in IPL 2020 and proved why he is on his path to becoming one of the future greats in the IPL.

Besides his captaincy credentials, Iyer is a reliable batsman, who has been a consistent performer in the league. He was released by Delhi Capitals after reportedly expressing his desire to look for a leadership role elsewhere after being replaced by Rishabh Pant as captain. Iyer has 2375 runs in 87 matches in the IPL at an average of over 31.

Shikhar Dhawan

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan might have slipped down the pecking order in the Indian team as far as T20Is are concerned, but he remains a prolific run-getter in the IPL. Dhawan has been churning out runs regularly for every team that he has played for in the league so far and enjoyed a brilliant stint for Delhi Capitals before being released this year.

Dhawan scored 587 runs in 16 matches for DC in IPL 2020 and was the fourth-highest run-getter in the tournament. The experienced opener will be in massive demand at the IPL 2022 mega auction and is expected to trigger a bidding war among teams.

Ishan Kishan

The explosive young wicket-keeper batter made his India debut last year and has been impressive since. Kishan didn't have a season to remember in IPL 2021 but still managed to stay among the runs despite not getting many chances. However, his versatility as a batter who can fire as an opener, as well as in the middle-order makes him a huge asset for any team.

Kishan is also a brilliant young wicket-keeper and can also be groomed into a leadership role in the future. He is certain to draw bids from a number of teams at the IPL mega auction and get a fat pay cheque for his services.

KL Rahul to Hardik Pandya: Indian stars who can bag big contracts at IPL 2022 mega auction

KL Rahul made his captaincy debut for India in Tests as he led the visitors in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. Rahul was asked to lead the side in the absence of regular skipper Virat Kohli, who had to sit out of the Test match due to a back spasm.

Rahul failed to inspire India to a victory but the visitors put on a strong fight in the game against the Proteas before going down by seven wickets. While many welcomed the decision to appoint Rahul as captain in Kohli's absence, former India batsman Wasim Jaffer believes Rahul should not have been handed the captaincy.

Jaffer said he was surprised by the Indian team management's decision to go with Rahul as the captain of the side despite someone like Ajinkya Rahane being there in the squad. Rahane's form of late has been questionable but he has a tremendous record as the captain of the Test side and is yet to lose a game as captain in the longest format.

“I am surprised by the team management. When you have someone as good as Ajinkya Rahane available who has not lost any Test as a captain and won you a Test series in Australia, do you need to give the Test captaincy to KL Rahul?” Jaffer was quoted as saying by Insidesport.

“I have nothing against KL Rahul. He is young and has captained the Punjab Kings. People are thinking about him as a future captain. But I think Rahane should have led the side in Kohli’s absence,” he added.

Jaffer reckoned India missed Kohli on the field as the captain brings in a lot of aggressiveness and positive intent with him. India failed to defend the total of 239 runs during South Africa's second innings as Proteas skipper Dean Elgar played a gritty knock of unbeaten 96 to take them home in the run-chase.

“India definitely missed Virat Kohli, the captain, because he brings so much aggression to the field. When you have such a player on the field, you know you will be held accountable if you make a mistake. So, they missed that energy,” Jaffer said.

India and South Africa will now lock horns in the series-deciding third Test which gets underway from January 11 in Newlands Cape Town.

Not KL Rahul! Wasim Jaffer names player who should have led India against SA in Virat Kohli's absence

India lost the second and penultimate Test versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa by 7 wickets as the threee-match series is now levelled at 1-1 with the final Test set to be held on January 11, at Newlands, Cape Town. Despite the loss, India have plenty of takeaways as they competed hard despite regular captain Virat Kohli warming the bench due to upper back spasm.

In addition, the middle-order stood tall as the likes of under-fire senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane got some runs (sharing a 111-run stand for the third-wicket during India's second essay) and returning with a half-century each. Hanuma Vihari, playing for injured Kohli, also got runs in both the innings and looked impressive. After the Test, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has lavished praise on India's No. 3 Pujara and claims that he reminds him of SA great Hashim Amla.

“When I look at him, he reminds me of Hashim. Watching Hashim bat, you know there's a sense of calm that everything is under control. The ball could be doing things but there was that sense because even on pitches where the ball was turning, the way Hashim was batting in India, it was almost as if, 'look, nothing's happening', and that's the same thing with Cheteshwar Pujara," said Gavaskar on SuperSport.

Gavaskar further termed that players with Pujara's temperament are "absolutely terrific" for the dressing room.

“It is a great, great blessing to have players of this temperament in your dressing room. (It may not be) necessarily just on the field but it's a huge plus and I think having somebody with Cheteshwar Puajra's temperament in the changing room must be absolutely terrific because in international cricket, there are several moments of tension where people would want to do this or that or the other. When you have somebody who's going to think about it calmly and give you a measured opinion it makes a big difference,” said Gavaskar.

KL Rahul-led India fought hard but lost the second and penultimate Test versus South Africa at The Wanderers, Johannesburg on Thursday (January 06). As Day 4 resumed with India needing 8 more wickets whereas Dean Elgar-led Proteas were 122 runs away from their 240-run target, Rahul & Co. managed to take only one more wicket as Elgar's 96 not out propelled the home side to a seven-wicket win.

The second Test between India and South Africa ended on Day 4 at The Wanderers, Johannesburg on Thursday (January 6). The match was set for an epic finish at stumps on Day 3 when India needed 8 more wickets whereas SA were need of 122 more runs -- chasing 240 -- at the iconic stadium. While rain interruption and wet outfield led to the first two sessions being washed out on Day 4, the evening session was enough for the Proteas to produce a result with a seven-wicket win to keep the series alive.

Sans regular captain Virat Kohli, KL Rahul-led India fought very hard before going down in the fourth and penultimate day. Batting first, India only managed 202 on board in the first innings and conceded a vital 27-run lead to the home side. In their second essay, India were dismissed for 266, setting up a 240-run target. Eventually, Elgar's resistance (96 not out) and other vital contributions from the SA batters led to the hosts' series-levelling win.

Captaining India for the first time for a full match, in Kohli's absence, Rahul lauded Team India. He mentioned where India lost the plot in a closely-fought contest in J'burg, provided update on Captain Kohli and shared words of praise for Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. In the post-match presentation, Rahul said, "Every Test match we play, we want to win, we go out there and compete hard, but South Africa played really well and deserved this victory. If I want to be harsh, the first innings total of 202 was at least 50-60 runs short, we should have scored more and put them under pressure. Shardul (Thakur) has been superb for us, has won us a lot of games, he bowled well in the first innings and gave us a chance today as well. They have been great players for us (on Pujara and Rahane), have always done the job for us over the years, have been under the pump recently, but we believe Pujara and Rahane are our best middle-order players, to go out there, bat in that mindset and play such an innings. It'll give them confidence and make them do even better in the next Test.

"Virat is already feeling better, he's been doing a bit of fielding and think he'll be fine. With Siraj, we need to monitor him in the nets. It's tough to come back immediately from a hamstring issue, but we do have a good bench strength in the form of Umesh and Ishant. We expected this when we came here, every Test will be competitive and challenging, we'll be more hungrier after this disappointing loss. Looking forward to Cape Town and the third Test.," Rahul added.

Updated ICC World Test C'ship points table after Dean Elgar-led South Africa beat India in J'burg

The second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, ended on Thursday (January 6) with Dean Elgar-led hosts beating KL Rahul's India by 7 wickets. After rain interruption and wet outfield led to a considerably delayed start to the fourth day's proceedings, Elgar's unbeaten 96 led the charge for his side single-handedly as the home side cruised to an emphatic win to level the series.

At stumps on Day 3, Proteas needed 122 more (in pursuit of 240) whereas India were in search of 8 more wickets to take an unassailable lead in the three-match series. However, Elgar's captain's knock propelled his side to the third-most successful run-chase at the venue (highest successful run-chase for the hosts at The Wanderers).

While many thought that the Indian bowlers would cherish bowling in overcast conditions, on Day 4, on a difficult batting track, they got only one wicket in the form of Rassie van der Dussen (40) before Elgar-Temba Bavuma's unbeaten 68-run stand took the Proteas past the finish line.

With this, the series is interestingly poised at 1-1 with the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on January 11. India will hope to see the return of regular captain Virat Kohli, who missed the second Test due to upper back spasm. The Asian side still remain in contention to win their maiden Test series on South African soil.

Opting to bat first in the J'burg Test, India had made 202 on the opening day whereas Shardul Thakur's seven-fer restricted the hosts for 229 in reply. Despite trailing by 27 runs, India made a competitive 266 in their second essay for SA to chase 240. However, Elgar showed the way as the other batters rallied around the skipper, showed more determination and will-power to beat India and keep the series alive.

Despite trailing by 27 runs, India made a competitive 266 in their second essay for SA to chase 240. However, Elgar showed the way as the other batters rallied around the skipper, showed more determination and will-power to beat India and keep the series alive.

Dean Elgar's gritty 96* takes Proteas to emphatic 7-wicket win in J'brug Test vs India, series levelled

Day 3 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers Johannesburg, ended on a cliff hanger as Proteas require 122 more runs whereas KL Rahul-led India are 8 wickets away from win.

The third day's play started with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle, resuming India's second essay from 85-2 (with the overall lead standing at 58 runs). The out-of-form duo looked in positive frame of mind and accumulated runs at will as the lead went past the three-figure mark with ease. However, both fell after reaching their respective half-centuries as the onus fell on Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant.

Pant got involved in a heated exchange with Rassie van der Dussen but didn't trouble the scorers as he fell for 0. Courtesy a cameo from Shardul Thakur (28) and Vihari's 40 not out, India fell for 266 as they setup a competitive 240-run target for the Dean Elgar-led hosts.

In reply, Elgar and Aiden Markram started off on a positive note before Markram was trapped lbw off Thakur. Elgar stitched another vital stand with No. 3 batter Keegan Petersen before Ashwin removed the latter against the run of play. Rahul attacked by employing a leg-slip and even called back Jasprit Bumrah (who had an altercation with Marco Jansen early in the day), but the speedster conceded runs at will despite troubling Elgar with his pace and bounce. Mohammad Shami also tested the SA captain but none could remove him as the left-hander held one end firmly. He was given company by van der Dussen before stumps on Day 3.

KL Rahul, Dean Elgar involved in war of words after Indian captain's dismissal on Day 2 of J'burg Test

Indian fans were in for a shock when they saw KL Rahul come out for the coin toss for the second and penultimate Test between Team India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg on Monday (January 3). The regular captain Virat Kohli missed out due to upper back spasm. Thus, it became the first Test that the 33-year-old Kohli missed due to injury concerns, since the Dharamshala Test versus Australia in early 2017.

With India being on the cusp of winning their first-ever Test series in South Africa, Kohli would've been gutted to warm the bench as Hanuma Vihari got a chance in his place for the second Test in J'burg. Former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar opened up on Kohli's omission and said he was 'absolutely shocked' to see the star batter miss out.

Manjrekar, speaking to ESPNCricinfo, admitted that all kinds of thoughts went through his head when he came to know that Kohli won't be part of the J'burg Test.

“I was absolutely shocked when I read that KL Rahul is walking out for the toss. All kinds of thoughts came over my mind. Various thoughts, but who would’ve thought that an injury to Virat Kohli because he’s one of those guys who never ever miss a Test match. And considering that India is in a great position to win and make history, it’s really unfortunate. It seems he’s really hurting. Shocking in many ways because it’s a surprise. And a batting setback as well despite his form.” Manjrekar said in the preview session.

On the other hand, Manjrekar also was thrilled to see Rahul's stocks rise in recent times due to his rich vein of form and the batter was rewarded to lead the side in Kohli's absence. In this regard, the former cricketer said, "There’s something about Test match performances. You have Rohit Sharma who had a great Test series vs ENG. Immediately after that, he became a captaincy candidate. If not for his injury, he would’ve captained this match,” he said.

Seen this with Rohit Sharma and now with KL Rahul. And this is all to do with the hard work that they put in, in England,” he added.

'All kinds of thoughts...': Manjrekar on Kohli's absence, says 'was absolutely shocked' to see him miss out

Day 2 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa has been a pulsating affair, so far, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. With India's bowling attack comprising a not-completely fit Mohammed Siraj, the KL Rahul-led visitors had a stiff task to prevent South Africa from dictating terms after being all-out for 202 in the opening day's play.

The day started with Dean Elgar-led South Africa being 35-1, trailing India's total by 167 runs. While the pressure was maintained by Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Shardul Thakur made the headlines with an astonishing performance, returning with 7 for 61 as Proteas were dismissed for 229 in the second innings of the contest. With this, the hosts lead India by 27 runs.

Seeing Shardul's impressive spell with the red cherry, former Indian bowling consultant Eric Simmons lauded Lord Shardul and said that his body language and willingness to step up for the team stands out.

"The comments by Simons came during the Lunch break show on Super Sport (at that time, Shardul had accounted for all the three scalps in the morning session's play). “He is the less illustrious of the quartet. As a person I've spoken a lot about in terms of his own self confidence but also his willingness to accept responsibilities,” said Simons.

“I wondered what was going to happen today with Siraj being injured. He did bowl a few but not with the same venom. He (Thakur) didn't bowl any better than the chaps upfront but he got the reward and this is the kind of personality we see in him,” he added.

In his brief career in whites, Shardul has contributed in crunch situations for Team India. His fifty and four-wicket haul in the Gabba Test and twin half-centuries and vital scalps in India's Oval Test victory are some of the prime examples. KL Rahul-led Team India had a herculean task to stop the Dean Elgar-led South Africa from taking a whopping lead on the second day's play, after the visitors fell for 202 on Day 1 of the Johannesburg Test on Monday (January 3). Before the start of the day's play on Tuesday (January 4), the ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah replicated R Ashwin's bowling action.

Just when the visitors were warming up before taking the field for the second day's play, the 28-year-old speedster -- who had earlier impersonated Ravindra Jadeja's bowling action in the nets during 2021 T20 World Cup -- copied Ashwin's bowling action perfectly. The 35-year-old Ashwin, on the other hand, took note of Bumrah's antics and chuckled seeing his action being imitated to perfection.

Ind vs SA: R Ashwin watches on as Jasprit Bumrah copies off-spinner's action during J'burg Test - WATCH

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's saga of failures compounded a shoddy batting performance by India even as stand-in skipper KL Rahul impressed with a defiant show amid the ruins on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa here on Monday.

Rahul's patient 50-run knock on a day when India missed Virat Kohli due to back spasms and Ravichandran Ashwin's cavalier 46 at the rear end ensured that India scored 202 in their first innings on a bouncy Wanderers track.

At stumps, Mohammed Shami sent back Aiden Markram even as Dean Elgar (11 batting) and Keegan Peterson (14 batting) took South Africa to 35 for 1. It could have been two down had Rishabh Pant snapped Peterson off Jasprit Bumrah, which seemed a regulation catch.

Worse, Mohammed Siraj hobbled off with what looked like a hamstring strain and if it's bad news, then India would be left with four bowlers.

However, a lot of blame should go to India's batters as some like Pujara didn't show intent to score while others like Rahane seemed completely short of confidence.

It prompted the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to say it as it is on air, "I think the next innings will be their last chance."
Having given up hopes to play for England, Duanne Olivier (3/67 in 17 overs), playing his first game for South Africa in three years, dismissed Pujara (3 off 33 balls) and Rahane (0) off successive deliveries to make it difficult for the Indians.

Marco Jansen (4/31 in 17 overs), with his giant frame, created awkward lengths for every Indian batter while Kagiso Rabada (3/64 in 17.1 overs), despite not being at his best, got wickets when it mattered.

In his first game as captain, Rahul concentrated hard as he played 133 deliveries. He was peppered with short balls. He would sway to some and duck the others while pulling the ones that he could.

His back-foot driving was majestic and he rode the bounce while going for the flashy cut shots. Such is beauty of sport that Rahul, who till five months ago wasn't supposed to start as an opener in England, is now being groomed as an all-format India captain.

If the first day composure is any indication, he won't do a bad job. But then there was a moment's indiscretion when he played one pull shot too many and holed out in the fine leg region.

Prior to that shot, the occasional pull that he played, Rahul rolled his bat over and tried to keep it down the ground but in this case, he got under the Jansen short ball and didn't get the required elevation.

He had a nice little partnership of 42 runs with Hanuma Vihari (20) before an inspirational close-in catch from Rassie Van der Dussen at short leg sent the latter back.

Rishabh Pant (17) and an attacking Ashwin (24 batting 21 balls) added 40 in quick time but what India needed was a partnership of at least 75 if not 100.

At the start, Mayank Agarwal (26) looked fluent in the first hour with five boundaries before Jansen pitched one in the spot from where it wasn't on drivable length as it climbed on. The opener went for a drive only to edge that to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.

Rahul, on his part, survived strong caught behind and leg before appeals which were negated by debutant umpire Allahudien Palekar, someone who impressed on debut.

But what would disappoint Pujara and Rahane most is that on a day when they should have taken more responsibility in Kohli's absence, they couldn't even inject a sense of positivity in India's approach.

The manner in which Pujara hopped and skipped to rising deliveries actually would have made the dressing room feel jittery about demons in the pitch which wasn't the case. But there was definitely seam and bounce which one expects here in South Africa.

He once again got into a shell and was very uncomfortable against steep bounce which finally became his undoing.
Olivier's natural back of length deliveries were perfect recipe for disaster as he fended one that was wide of the short leg fielder but the next one lobbed up to the man at point for an easy catch.

Rahane's dismissal was that of a player, whose confidence has been torn to pieces. The ball pitched on the fourth stump channel, created indecision on whether to play or not and Rahane dangled his bat for the catch to be taken in the slips.

This match will certainly not last the distance and if they can't make a difference in the second innings, the enormous patience that the Indian team management has shown towards them will definitely start wearing thin.

Rahane, Pujara's flop show continues as Indian middle-order disappoints again in 2nd Test against SA

On Monday (January 3), Indian cricket loyalists were in for a shock when they saw KL Rahul walk out for the coin toss for the second Test between India and South Africa, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. Regular captain Virat Kohli -- who was set to appear in his 99th Test -- missed out due to upper back spasm and Rahul (who was promoted as the vice-captain in Rohit Sharma's absence for the series) took charge of the side.

Winning the toss, Rahul-led India opted to bat first at The Wanderers, J'burg. While the national side started well, at 36 for no loss, they were soon reduced to 49-3. From thereon, it was hardwork for in-form opener Rahul to get to his 13th half-century amid regular fall of wickets. Rahul eventually fell to Marco Jansen's well-executed short-pitched delivery for a well-made 133-ball 50.

Courtesy his knock, the 29-year-old Rahul entered an elite list -- featuring the likes of Kohli, Sunil Gavaskar, Sourav Ganguly, etc. -- to have scored 50 or more runs on captaincy debut. For the unversed, Vijay Hazare, who scored an unbeaten 164 in 1951, tops the list, followed by Sunil Gavaskar (116 runs) and Virat Kohli (115) on the second and third position respectively. Sourav Ganguly (84 runs), Chandu Borde (69), Hemu Adhikari (63) and Nari Contractor are also part of this unique club.

Meanwhile, Rahul became the fifth Indian captain to surpass the 50-run mark while opening the innings. Little Master Gavaskar (25 times), Contractor (4 times), current head coach Rahul Dravid (2) and Virender Sehwag (2) are also part of the elusive panel.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Rahul joins elite list comprising Virat Kohli and Ganguly after 50 on captaincy debut

Cheteshwar Pujara's woeful run with the bat continued on Day 1 of the second and penultimate Test between India and South Africa on Monday (January 3). After stand-in captain KL Rahul won the toss and opted to bat first, India started off decently to reach 36 for no loss before they were quickly reduced to 49-3 in no time.

After Mayank Agarwal (26) was the first wicket to fall on the day, No. 3 batter Pujara was expected to grind it out in the middle with no Virat Kohli in the line-up, due to upper back spasm. However, nothing of that sort happened as the 33-year-old perished for cheap (3), falling to a well-executed short-pitched delivery from SA's pacer Duanne Olivier.

With another failure, Pujara is surely running against time to hold onto his Test spot. For the unversed, the right-hander's last triple-figure knock came in early 2019 versus Australia Down Under. Since then, he has had vital fifty-plus scores under his belt, however, the senior pro has failed to convert them. Moreover, Pujara has fallen to short-pitched balls or being beaten by the incoming deliveries.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra decoded Pujara's failures in the lunch break and told on Star Sports, "He is not even hitting the half volley with full might and we can an uncanny pattern in his dismissals. He had nicked Ngidi's delivery in the first innings of the Centurion Test. If we look at his hands and the height of the delivery, why is he even trying to play off the front foot instead of using the depth of the crease."

"If you are always lunging forward with low hands, bowlers are going to enjoy bowling against you on South African pitches. Extra bounce, low hands, lunging forward… that's a recipe for disaster," he added.

To showcase Pujara's woes, he has now gone 45 innings without a century. Thus, former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel also spoke at length about the short ball ploy used against Pujara and said, "He needs to find a way to get off the strike in South Africa and have that intent to score. There is no better feeling bowler when you run in and know that the batter is not trying to take you on."

India are without regular captain Kohli in the second Test in Johannesburg. The visitors have lost more than half the side for 150 after opting to bat first. They will hope to post anything over 220 and then challenge the Dean Elgar-led Proteas with the red cherry in hand.

IND vs SA, 2nd Test: Aakash Chopra points out 'uncanny pattern' to Pujara's dismissals amid his struggles

India were dealt with a huge blow ahead of the start of the second Test versus South Africa on Monday (January 3). Regular captain Virat Kohli got ruled out of the second and penultimate tie due to upper back spasm, with KL Rahul captaining the national side in the ongoing Test at The Wanderers, Johannesburg.

At the coin toss, stand-in captain Rahul told the broadcasters, "Unfortunately Virat has had an upper back spasm, the physios are working on him and hopefully he'll recover for the next Test. It is every Indian player's dream to captain his country. Really honoured and looking forward to this challenge. We have had a few good wins here and hopefully we'll look to continue that. Hanuma Vihari comes in place of Virat. Just the one change. It was a good Test at Centurion overall. We really performed well as a team and are really excited about this match."

In Kohli's absence, India will be eager to win the second Test -- after the impressive 113-run victory in the Centurion tie -- and claim their first-ever series triumph on South African soil. India's playing XI for the J'burg Test is as follows:

KL Rahul(c), Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj

'Test without him is soulless' - Twitterati reacts as Virat Kohli misses India vs SA 2nd Test in J'burg

India were dealt with a huge blow ahead of the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday (January 03) as captain Virat Kohli was ruled out of the game due to a back spasm. In his absence, KL Rahul, who was the vice-captain of the side, was asked to lead the team in the all-important encounter as the visitors hope to continue their winning momentum after a solid victory in the series-opener in Centurion.

Rahul was not India's designated vice-captain ahead of the start of the Test series with Rohit Sharma replacing Ajinkya Rahane as Kohli's deputy in the longest format. However, an injury to Rohit paved way for Rahul to be India's vice-captain in the three-match rubber. With Kohli missing out in the playing XI for the second Test, Rahul is India's new captain in charge in Johannesburg.

Reacting to the decision, former India selector Saba Karim lauded the team management for handing over the captaincy responsibility to Rahul in Kohli's absence. The former Indian cricketer said he was not only confident of Rahul having a good 2022 but also of him owning the next decade while serving the Indian team for a long time to come in all formats.

“I think this is an excellent decision. I am very confident that not only the upcoming year but the upcoming decade will belong to KL Rahul. The kind of form he has displayed, if he carries on with the same work ethic, he will serve India for many years to come,” said Karim on Khelneeti.

Rahul has also been named India's captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa in Rohit's absence and is being seen as one of the future leaders of the Indian team. The star batter has also led Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Karim believes Rahul has the quality to not let the burden of captaincy hamper his performances with the bat which is going to help him in the future.

“KL Rahul has shown those instincts while leading Punjab Kings. When you appoint a captain, you need to analyze if there is an improvement in his primary skill. Rahul has definitely shown this while captaining Punjab Kings. That’s why it is being hoped that his performance will get even better with the responsibility of leadership,” said the former selector.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Big blow to India as Virat Kohli out of playing XI, KL Rahul takes charge

BCCI, on December 31 (Friday), named a strong 18-man squad for India's upcoming three-match ODI series versus Temba Bavuma-led South Africa, starting on January 19. With Rohit Sharma ruled out due to injury concerns, KL Rahul was named the captain along with speedster Jasprit Bumrah becoming his deputy. While the move was lauded by many, as Bumrah has shown he possesses a sharp mind, it has surprised former Indian keeper and national selector Saba Karim.

Karim felt that with Rahul named captain, Rishabh Pant would've been the vice-captain as the 24-year-old is already being touted to be considered for captaincy in future. In this regard, Karim told India News, "I was extremely surprised, I was not expecting Jasprit Bumrah to be made the vice-captain. I was hoping that Rishabh Pant had more chances to be made the vice-captain because he is also a multi-format player, he plays all the three formats. Pant's performances as captain of the Delhi Capitals have been very good. We are seeing how he reads the match, he has a lot of game awareness."

He added, "Jasprit Bumrah has the talent, his role is very important for the Indian team but he has not captained anywhere till now. So it is slightly surprising. I was feeling that Rishabh Pant was the first candidate as vice-captain."

For the unversed, Pant has led Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2021 and took them to the playoffs as well. On the other hand, Bumrah has not even donned the vice-captain's hat for Mumbai Indians (MI), the franchise he represents in the cash-rich league since 2015.

Meanwhile, former all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi has given his thumbs up to Bumrah's elevation as vice-captain. He told, "I have said earlier as well that Jasprit Bumrah is captaincy material. It is a huge myth that fast bowlers cannot be captains. Fast bowlers read the game very well and the big reason for Jasprit Bumrah being made the vice-captain is that he is a performer across the formats."

He further opined, "We can take a leaf out of the book of the Australians. Pat Cummins was made the captain, there was a lot of criticism but Australia is 3-0 ahead in the Ashes and Pat Cummins has given a terrific performance. Jasprit Bumrah being made the vice-captain is a signal that he can captain the country in the coming days."

It will be interesting to see how Rahul-Bumrah lead the side in the upcoming ODIs, which will get underway at Paarl on January 19 post the ongoing Test series in the rainbow nation. The ODI squad is well-oiled with several experienced campaigners and young guns in the mix.

Ex-India keeper surprised with Jasprit Bumrah named vice-captain for SA ODIs, feels Pant had 'more chances'

Team India's 18-man squad for the upcoming South Africa ODIs, in the African nation, was announced on December 31 (Friday), 2021. While the squad announcement was delayed reportedly to examine Rohit Sharma's fitness, the 18-member squad got finally revealed sans limited-overs skipper Rohit.

Rohit has been ruled out due to hamstring injury as his deputy KL Rahul will lead the Men in Blue in the three ODIs against SA, starting on January 19 at Paarl. After the squad announcement, BCCI's All-India Senior Selection Committee's chairman and former player Chetan Sharma attended his first-ever press conference since taking over the top post.

In the PC, Sharma addressed some important topics pertaining in Indian cricket at present, i.e. the ODI captaincy row, opened up on the prospects of having KL Rahul as the future leader and more.

On KL Rahul's rise

Chetan said at the PC, "We are looking to groom KL Rahul and we have confidence in him. He has proved his leadership qualities. KL is the best one who can handle the side. He is an all-format player and he has got good experience of captaincy... this is what all selectors think."

For the unversed, Rahul has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two IPL seasons and is touted to be Lucknow franchise's skipper in IPL 2022.

On Ganguly vs Kohli statements

The biggest issue in Indian cricket right now is the contradictory statements made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and former limited-overs captain Kohli post the latter's T20I captaincy resignation and sacking as ODI skipper.

While Ganguly claimed that BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to quit as T20I captain, the 33-year-old Kohli denied all such claims in a presser before the SA tour. Hence, Chetan Sharma shared his take on the matter and said, "When meeting started, it was a surprise for everybody. If the World T20 is round the corner and you hear something like this, what will be your reaction? Everyone present in that meeting had told him that he should rethink his decision (to quit T20 captaincy) and we can talk about it after the World Cup. All selectors felt at that time that this can affect us in the World Cup. It was told to Virat for sake of Indian cricket, please continue as the captain and it was told by everybody present in the meeting. The convenors were there, board officials were there. Sabhi ne bola hai (everyone told him). Who won’t tell? If this news comes to you, you are in a shock. But since we had a World T20 to play, we never wanted it to affect team."

"He (Kohli) had his plans and we respect him. If he has taken the decision, and this is what he said in the media also, that from WTC he had been thinking about it... everyone told him to think about it and we thought let’s talk after the World Cup," added the former cricketer.

On Kohli's sacking as ODI captain

On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI skipper, appointing Rohit as the white-ball skipper. This also led to varied responses from all corners, especially as it came only in the form of a tweet from the BCCI and wasn't followed by an official statement or presser. At his presser on December 15, Kohli had admitted that he agreed on the reason given for his sacking, however, revealed that he came to know about the decision only sometime before the official announcement was made.

In this regard, Sharma told, "It was Virat’s decision and nobody actually told him to quit the [T20I] captaincy. But once he quit T20 captaincy, obviously the selectors have to think what our decision is and obviously all selectors think it is one captain for white-ball formats, it becomes easy for selectors to plan things. We informed him regarding this. The 50 overs decision was the selectors’ and T20 captaincy was his decision."

He further asserted, "As soon as selection committee came to the point and discussed it, I immediately called up Virat that afternoon. There was a Test selection coming up. We didn’t want to inform in that selection meeting and that’s why I called him when our meeting was over. And this is what selectors think and there will be one white-ball captain, there were a couple of questions and we had good conversations. He (Kohli) agreed on that. What we discuss I can’t disclose it here and we had a good chat. Most important thing is, Virat is a very important part of Indian cricket. We want him to play for India and keep getting runs, because the team revolves around it."

"When it comes to planning, our thought process was we need one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain. He came at (Test selection) meeting around 5:30 pm and we had informed him before that. It was hard decision for us and we have to take some hard decisions, that’s what we are here for. Same for selection of playing XI. Sometimes those are need of the hour. He is going to be a very important for years to come," the 55-year old added.

Chetan Sharma signed off by saying, "The main goal for everybody is the same: to keep India on top. We don’t want controversies. That is the reason we don’t come out. Our job is to select the team, make sure the best guy goes and plays for the country. When these controversies happen, it makes us sad as cricketers. I was joking that Ajaz [Patel] has been dropped by New Zealand after taking ten wickets. Imagine if we had done something similar, what would have happened to us," he said.

At present, India is involved in a three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the rainbow nation. The Kohli-led Test side won the series opener, at Centurion, by 113 runs and are on the cusp of winning their first-ever Test series in the African nation if they win at least one of the remaining two Tests.

The Tests will be followed by three ODIs, which will give Rahul the chance to lead India for the first time in a full series.

On KL Rahul's rise Chetan said at the PC, "We are looking to groom KL Rahul and we have confidence in him. He has proved his leadership qualities. KL is the best one who can handle the side. He is an all-format player and he has got good experience of captaincy... this is what all selectors think." For the unversed, Rahul has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two IPL seasons and is touted to be Lucknow franchise's skipper in IPL 2022. On Ganguly vs Kohli statements The biggest issue in Indian cricket right now is the contradictory statements made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and former limited-overs captain Kohli post the latter's T20I captaincy resignation and sacking as ODI skipper. But since we had a World T20 to play, we never wanted it to affect team." "He (Kohli) had his plans and we respect him. If he has taken the decision, and this is what he said in the media also, that from WTC he had been thinking about it... everyone told him to think about it and we thought let’s talk after the World Cup," added the former cricketer. The 50 overs decision was the selectors’ and T20 captaincy was his decision." He further asserted, "As soon as selection committee came to the point and discussed it, I immediately called up Virat that afternoon. We want him to play for India and keep getting runs, because the team revolves around it." "When it comes to planning, our thought process was we need one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain.
