Packed home season, Asia Cup, T20 WC: A glance at Kohli, Rohit-starrer India's cricketing calendar for 2022

Team India ended 2021 on a glorious note, winning their first-ever Test at Centurion. While the year saw India's dominance in Test cricket, they played only a handful of ODIs but faltered in the shortest format of the game. The year had two ICC tournaments, in the form of WTC final and T20 World Cup, but India failed to win any major title. While their overall run in Tests remained impressive, the Men in Blue fell flat in the T20 WC.&nbsp;

Talking about India's campaign in the 2021 T20 WC, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team lost their opening clash to Pakistan by ten wickets (losing their first-ever game versus the arch-rivals in a World Cup). In their next encounter, the one-time winners India were listless versus Kane Williamson's New Zealand as they lost by 8 wickets to edge closer to elimination. While Kohli &amp; Co. bounced back and won three games in a row, it was too late by then as Pakistan and New Zealand marched to the semi-finals from India's group, i.e. Pool B. Recently, Ravi Shastri opined on India's struggles in the T20 WC, post which his tenure as the head coach came to an end.&nbsp;

"Pakistan played well on that day, and against New Zealand, we were timid. We were very timid. It showed in the game. We were tentative instead of going for the jugular. You never mind losing as long as you're throwing punches. But if you're timid and tentative then it hurts more. And in a tournament like this if you lose too early then you're in trouble," Shastri said on the Bold &amp; Brave The Ravi Shastri Way' show on Star Sports.

Shastri further called for the tournament's format to be like the one witnessed in the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was a round-robin stage with each team playing the other once before the knockouts. The former Indian all-rounder also feels that the playoffs scenario should also be implemented in World Cups. In this regard, he said, "It's not like the format in 2019, where you can play every opposition. I think that is the way to go forward. That format is the best, and then have the Playoffs ideally, if you want to decide the World Cup," explained Shastri."

Since the 2021 T20 WC campaign, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain, after the latter resigned from the post with the end of the World Cup, and recently replaced him as the limited-overs captain as well. The year 2022 will see teams compete once again in the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, which will be held in current champions Australia's backyard. The one-time winners Team India will aim to move past their past struggles and claim the mega title in 2022.&nbsp;

Team India by far the best in the world: Former SA pacer lauds Virat Kohli & Co. post Centurion Test win

India opener KL Rahul believes that enjoying in leaving balls outside the off-stump is key to do well in Test cricket. He added that the Indian team is lucky to have legendary batter and former India captain Rahul Dravid as the head coach for he brings a lot of calmness and balance in the dressing room.

Since his re-entry into Test cricket, Rahul has scored 461 runs in ten innings at an average of 46.10. In his knock of 123 in the first innings at Centurion, for which he got the player of the match award, Rahul displayed the attributes which got him success: leaving balls outside the off-stump, defending with soft hands, not being rattled by short-ball barrage and punished bad balls by sending them to boundary ropes.

"It's something that I am enjoying doing a lot, to be honest. I think that's the key to Test cricket. You need to enjoy leaving balls outside the off-stump. I know we play a lot of T20 and ODI cricket and smash the ball all over the park is exciting and thrilling. At the same time, when you come to Test cricket, you learn to be disciplined and play the waiting game and try to enjoy that," said Rahul in the virtual press conference after India won by 113 runs at SuperSport Park.

Mixing enjoyment and responsibility as an opener in Test cricket has been exciting till now for the Test vice-captain.

"Sometimes, the mistakes happen when you are bored of doing the same things. But, for me, I have tried to enjoy leaving balls outside the off-stump, playing defensive shots, tiring the bowlers at times. That is what is expected out of me as an opener for the team. So, in this year, since I have started playing Test matches again in England, I have started enjoying doing those things and had a good knock here in this game. Now, I have to go to the Wanderers and try to do the same thing all over again, which is exciting for me."

The 29-year-old spoke in affirmative of head coach Rahul Dravid`s presence in the dressing room, saying India are really lucky in having him at the helm.

"When a legendary player like Rahul Dravid comes into the dressing room as the coach, you want to sit with him and talk to him about what he did in these conditions. Like, how he was successful for so many years and you talk about the art of batting, for which we are very lucky to have a guy like him in the dressing room, who has brought in a lot of calm and balance into the dressing room. He focuses a lot on the preparations and made us work really hard at the training in nets. We have enjoyed that period and having him presents an opportunity for us to learn and get better as cricketers and people. That's a great thing for us."

The 29-year-old acknowledged the decisive role of winning the toss in India posting a first innings total of 327, which set the base for taking a 130-run lead and eventually winning the match.

"It was a really crucial toss for us to win, especially after we saw how the pitch started to play on day three and four. Winning the toss was crucial as it was very crucial for us to put up a decent total up on board in the first innings because we knew that the cracks will open up and will be harder as the game progresses to score runs. Our aim was to get around 350-360 and give a chance to our bowlers to do what they do. Really happy that we could do that."

India demolished South Africa on Day 5 of the first Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30) to end the calendar year on a high. The year saw Virat Kohli-led Team India win as many as four Tests in SENA countries, in Brisbane, Lord's, The Oval and Centurion.&nbsp;

Resuming the fifth and final day with Proteas reeling at 94-4, India needed six more wickets to win while defending a competitive 305. Proteas skipper Dean Elgar (77) showed some resistance and the limited-overs captain Temba Bavuma (35 not out) also looked good before the Indian bowlers wrapped up proceedings in style on the final day's second session. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami took three wickets each whereas Mohammed Siraj and R Ashwin claimed two scalps apiece. With this win, India achieved their fourth victory in the purest format in the African nation with two of them coming under Kohli (in a row).&nbsp;

While Kohli didn't have a great run with the bat, the 33-year-old had a memorable Test as captain by achieving a plethora of records with India's 113-run win in Centurion. The superstar cricketer led India to their maiden Test win at the venue. Before this, India had won a Test in Durban and twice in Johannesburg. In addition, Kohli is now the only Asian captain to lead his side to two Boxing Day Test victories. Earlier, he had led India to victory in the 2018/19 Boxing Day encounter versus Australia at Melbourne Cricket Ground, MCG.&nbsp;

India demolished South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test, of the three-match series, at the SuperSpork Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30). With this win, India ended the calendar year with a bang. In early 2021, India had breached Australia's fortress, i.e. at The Gabba, Brisbane, and now ended the year by breaching SA's fortress, i.e. at Centurion (Proteas' first loss at the venue since 2014).

Resuming Day 5, Dean Elgar-led Proteas started by reeling at 94-4, needing 211 more in pursuit of 305. However, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj chipped in with vital wickets before Mohammed Shami and R Ashwin wrapped up the tail in a flash. Elgar (77) and Temba Bavuma (35 not out) showed some resistance but the Indian bowlers, especially the seamers, led the charge with the red cherry in hand to take India to their maiden win at the venue.

Pant will aim to cross Dhoni's overall tally of 294 dismissals in whites (most by an Indian) by the time he ends his Test career. While he has plenty to achieve as of now, the youngster promises a lot more in future with his talent, learning abilities and overall skills.

Rishabh Pant created history on Day 3 of the first Test between India and South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Tuesday (December 28). The 24-year-old youngster became the quickest Indian keeper to 100 Test dismissals, breaking his mentor and former Indian captain MS Dhoni's record (who achieved the feat during his 36th Test appearance).

Ind vs SA, 1st Test: Rishabh Pant goes past MS Dhoni to become quickest Indian keeper to 100 dismissals

Indian opener KL Rahul looked in sublime touch with the bat on Day 1 of the ongoing first Test between India and South Africa at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Rahul helped India get off to a terrific start in the Boxing Day Test with a magnificent unbeaten century on the opening day. He slammed 122 not out to help India post 272/3 on the board at stumps on Day 3.

India were off to a good start after winning the toss and opting to bat first in the Boxing Day clash. Openers Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (60) combined to put on a 117-run stand for the first wicket before Cheteshwar Pujara departed cheaply. However, Rahul continued to go strong at one end and combined with skipper Virat Kohli to add 82 runs for the third wicket.

He then posted another crucial partnership of unbeaten 73 runs with Ajinkya Rahane (40) to put India in a strong position at stumps on Day 1. With his magnificent ton, Rahul joined former India batsman Wasim Jaffer in an elite list. Rahul became only the second Indian opener to score a Test century in South Africa after Jaffer.

KL Rahul joins Wasim Jaffer in elite list with brilliant century in Boxing Day Test against South Africa

Former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt is very vocal on various aspects of the gentlemen's game and often shares his views on several platforms. After Day 1 of the Centurion Test ended between India and South Africa, on Sunday (December 26), the tainted Pakistani cricketer has called for senior Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara's omission from the Test line-up to make way for 'in-form' Mayank Agarwal once Rohit Sharma returns.

For the unversed, vice-captain Rohit Sharma isn't part of Virat Kohli-led India's three-match Test series versus Dean Elgar-led Proteas, in the rainbow nation, due to a hamstring injury. Mayank, on the other hand, had fallen behind in the pecking order due to Rohit, KL Rahul and Shubman Gill's presence but injury to Rohit and Gill made him the opener for the SA series.

Mayank cashed in the opportunity to score a free-flowing and attractive 123-ball 60 on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test between India and South Africa at the SuperSport Park, Centurion. He stitched an impressive 117-run opening stand with centurion KL Rahul (122 not out) and helped India close the day at 272-3. Meanwhile, Pujara's struggles continued as he was dismissed for a golden duck, his second overall, and fourth duck in the calendar year. Pujara's last international ton came in early 2019, hence, his spot is under the scanner.

Ex-Pak skipper calls for senior batter's omission for 'in-form' Mayank Agarwal on Rohit's Test return

Rohit Sharma is unlikely to recover in time to feature in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. India are currently taking on the hosts in a three-match Test series which will be followed by as many ODIs. Rohit, who was named India's ODI captain ahead of the start of the ongoing tour earlier this month, is not part of the Test squad due to a hamstring injury.

Rohit had suffered a hamstring injury while training in Mumbai and is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he is working on his recovery. However, as per Sports Today, India's limited-overs captain might not make it in time for the ODI series as he might take 4-6 weeks to recover fully from the hamstring injury.

Earlier, BCCI had said Rohit might return in three weeks time to lead the team in the ODI series against South Africa. However, as per Sports Today, he is unlikely to return and KL Rahul might lead the Indian team in the Hitman's absence. Rahul is India's designated vice-captain in both ODIs and T20Is.

Rahul has had a remarkable 2021 so far as he once again cemented his spot in the Test team and became a regular for the team in limited-overs. Rahul was elevated to vice-captaincy in T20Is after Kohli stepped down as the captain in the shortest format with Rohit taking over.

The stylish right-hander was later named the vice-captain in ODIs as well after Rohit replaced Kohli as the ODI skipper. Rahul was then named Kohli's deputy for the ongoing South Africa Test series in the absence of Rohit, who was the vice-captain of the series.

KL Rahul likely to lead India in ODI series vs South Africa if Rohit Sharma fails to recover in time - Report

Virat Kohli-led India ended Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test versus South Africa, in Centurion, on top. After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Kohli &amp; Co. rode on opener KL Rahul's 122 not out and Mayank Agarwal's 60 to post 272-3 at stumps on the opening day.

Rahul and Mayank's 117-run opening stand set the tone for Team India. While India lost two wickets in a row, to be reduced to 117/2, Rahul was involved in valuable stands with Captain Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to close the day on a high for the visitors. Rahul's 7th ton also made him the second Indian opener to cross the three-figure mark in South Africa and become the first-ever opener from the country to have Test centuries in England, SA, Australia and West Indies.

In a video posted by&nbsp;BCCI&nbsp;on Twitter, Rahul reflected on his memorable performance on Day 1 and said, "It is truly special, every hundred really takes something out of you and gives you joy. There are so many emotions you go through when you score a hundred.&nbsp;You bat for 6-7 hours, those are the kind of innings that stand out and as players, we really cherish these."

"This is what is expected out of me. Once I got off to a good start, I started enjoying my batting and I did not think too far ahead," he added.&nbsp;

"Preparation has been really good, all the batters that batted on Day 1 were really focused. I just try to stay in the moment when I am out there in the middle. I have surprised myself with how calm I have been, my focus has always been to stay in the moment and react to the ball that is bowled. Surprised myself with how calm I have been: KL Rahul reacts to his 'truly special' Centurion ton vs SA

Cheteshwar Pujara hasn't scored an international ton since early 2019. While the right-hander continues to be an integral part of India's Test line-up and has played some important knocks in the recent past, a three-figure knock continues to evade the red-ball specialist.&nbsp;

On Day 1 of the first Test between India and South Africa, in Centurion, Pujara came out to bat with India off to a fine start courtesy openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Coming out to bat with India 117/1 after winning the toss, Pujara was expected to take the scoreboard forward and bat throughout the day; tiring the bowlers. However, he fell for a golden duck.

Pujara tried to negate a Lungi Ngidi delivery but got an inside edge and was caught by the short-leg fielder as he walked back to the pavillion for a golden duck. Thus, the right-hander felt dejected as his run of form remains below his own standards. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came to his rescue and lifted his spirits in the dressing room.

During the third-wicket stand between Indian captain Virat Kohli and opener KL Rahul, Dravid went past Pujara and gave him a gentle pat on his back which brought a smile on the current No. 3 batter. Here's the video of the same shared on social media platform Twitter:

Talking about Day of the Centurion Test, Kohli-led India ended the day's play on top. After the 117-run opening stand between Rahul and Mayank (60), India slipped to 117-2 but an 82-run third-wicket partnership between Kohli-Rahul and unbeaten fourth-wicket stand between Ajinkya Rahane-Rahul (122 not out) took India to 272-3 at stumps.&nbsp;

Day 2 of the first Test has not started yet due to relentless rain showers. Kohli-led India will look to surpass the 400-run mark and pile up a big score when play resumes after the rain break. Dean Elgar-led South Africa will hope to get rid of the rest of the Indian batters in a flash and comeback into the contest.

3 batter. India vs SA: Virat Kohli goes past Mohammad Azharuddin in unique list in Centurion Test opening day

Opening batsman KL Rahul gave India an ideal start in their quest to win a Test series in South Africa with a solid century on the first day of the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Sunday.

Rahul made 122 not out as India reached 272 for three at the close after Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat on a green-tinged pitch.

Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (60) drew the sting from the South African attack with an opening stand of 117 before fast bowler Lungi Ngidi dismissed Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara off successive deliveries.

It was only a temporary setback for the tourists, however as Rahul shared a third wicket partnership of 82 with Kohli (35) before he and Ajinkya Rahane added an unbeaten 73 for the fourth wicket.

Rahul provided a masterpiece of concentration and shot selection, marred only by a difficult chance to long leg off Wiaan Mulder when he was on 60. He faced 248 balls and hit 17 fours and a six.

Rahane, whose place in the team had been questioned after a run of poor form, struck the ball crisply in making an unbeaten 40 off 81 balls with eight fours.

Ngidi was the only successful bowler, taking three for 45.

Kohli said at the toss that India's win against South Africa in the third Test in Johannesburg on their previous tour in 2017/18 had given them the confidence of knowing they could win away from home.

Although they lost that series 2-1, India went on to achieve victories in Australia and England, leaving South Africa as the only major cricket-playing nation where they have not yet triumphed.

It was a chastening day for South Africa's fast bowlers in conditions which should have been in their favour.

Already without strike bowler Anrich Nortje, out for the series with a hip injury, South Africa surprisingly gave a first cap to tall left-arm fast bowler Marco Jansen ahead of Duanne Olivier, the leading wicket-taker in domestic first-class cricket this season.

Jansen, 21, created the only chance of the morning, having Agarwal dropped by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock with his score on 36 and the total 52. He produced some threatening deliveries but also sent down some loose balls which were punished.

The South Africa team wore black armbands in honour of anti-apartheid icon Desmond Tutu, described as the country's moral compass, who died on Sunday aged 90.

Both teams also held a minute's silence.

KL Rahul slams ton to give India strong start in Boxing Day Test against South Africa in Centurion

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has named a couple of players who he feels are string contenders to lead the Indian cricket team in the future. Rohit Sharma recently took over from Virat Kohli as ODI and T20I captain of the Indian team after the T20 World Cup debacle where the Men in Blue had failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

Shastri was also replaced by Rahul Dravid as the head coach of the team as his contract expired post the T20 World Cup. The former head coach feels KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are two players who are contenders to be an Indian captain in the future. He revealed the names while speaking about Dravid replacing him as the head coach.

"Rahul Dravid knows his job. All I want to say to him is enjoy. KL Rahul is there, Shreyas Iyer has good leading qualities in the future especially in white-ball cricket," Shastri told Indian Express.

Rahul is already part of India's leadership group and has been appointed the team's full-time vice-captain in white-ball cricket with Rohit leading the team. He also was named the stand-in vice-captain of the Test team for the upcoming Test series against South Africa after an injury to Rohit, who was to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the series.

Rahul has also led Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has been a regular across formats for Team India over the last few years. He is likely to lead whichever team he decides to join ahead of the IPL mega auction having left Punjab Kings.

Meanwhile, Iyer has also been fantastic as a captain in the IPL and has shown great leadership qualities with Delhi Capitals. He inspired Delhi to their maiden final in IPL 2020. However, Iyer is yet to take a leadership role in the Indian team.

Nonetheless, Shastri, who has observed him from close quarters during his coaching stint, believes Iyer has the potential to lead India in the future. Currently, Rohit is India's white-ball captain while Kohli continues to lead the side in Tests.

Not Rishabh Pant! Former head coach Ravi Shastri names 2 players who can captain Team India in future

From failing to cement his spot in the Indian Test team during their tour of Australia in 2020-21 to being named the vice-captain of the side for the upcoming Test series against South Africa, KL Rahul has managed to script a remarkable turnaround in his Test career. Rahul was behind Rishabh Pant in the pecking order as a wicket-keeper batter while Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal were competing for the opening slots.

Rahul had to return home due to an injury after missing the first two Tests on the Australia tour in 2020-21. However, he made a strong comeback on India's tour of England with 315 runs in four matches to force his way back in the team. He was named India's vice-captain for the South Africa Tests after Rohit Sharma picked up a hamstring injury ahead of the tour.

Rohit had replaced Ajinkya Rahane as India's vice-captain permanently in the longest format. Rahul recently opened up on his rise and the feeling of being handed over the Test captaincy ahead of an important series. The stylish right-hand batter said, around a year back, he was not even sure if he would ever play Test cricket for India again.&nbsp;

"Before 6-7 months or a year ago, I never thought I would get to play Test cricket again. Things changed quickly and I am very happy and grateful for such a huge responsibility is given to me as vice-captain for this tour. I am looking forward to giving my best," Rahul told his best friend and Indian teammate Mayank Agarwal in an interview for BCCI.TV.

India will square off against South Africa in the first Test in Centurion - a Boxing Day game that gets underway on December 26. The Boxing Day Test will mark the commencement of the three-match series between the two sides. When asked about Boxing Day games, Rahul said he has not had great luck in them as he recalled his debut.

Rahul had made his Test debut in a Boxing Day Test against Australia back in 2014 and did not do well as he was dismissed for 3 and 1 in the two innings respectively. On India's tour of Australia in 2018-19, he was dropped for the Boxing Day Test after failing to perform in the first two games in the series.

"I have bitter-sweet memories from Boxing Day. I debuted on a Boxing Day Test in Australia, but that did not go well. I lost my position again. I felt that's the end for me. I think I have become more balanced in my approach to the game. I have changed a lot from how I used to play in 2014 when I made my debut and in 2018," said Rahul.

Rohit, on the other hand, is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he is working on his recovery. If he manages to recover fully, the Hitman will be joining the Indian squad before the start of the ODI series against South Africa.

A number of top players are reportedly in talks with the two new teams to join them ahead of the mega auction.

KL Rahul next? Andy Flower leaves Punjab Kings to become head coach of Lucknow IPL franchise

Team India are set to leave for South Africa, where they will play three Tests and equal number of ODIs. Before the tour opener, India have been dealt with several injuries as key players such as Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shubman Gill have been ruled out.

Recently, newly-appointed Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma also got injured and has been ruled out of action at least till the three Tests in South Africa. Thus, the national selectors will have to name a new vice-captain for the Tests. In this scenario, they have quite a few options to choose from in the form of Cheteshwar Pujara, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah. Moreover, Ajinkya Rahane can also be named the vice-captain once again only for the upcoming series.

Nonetheless, reports have suggested that Rahul is the frontrunner. For the unversed, he is already Rohit's deputy in the T20I format and a strong contender to be the vice-captain in the ODI format as well.

Thus, former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman and selector Saba Karim also named Rahul as the vice-captain for the SA Tests. "They need to announce (a new vice-captain). You may not have an urgent need of a vice-captain in a home series but you definitely need a vice-captain overseas. Sometimes, when the captain is not on the field, you need a deputy to take over things,” Karim said in the Khelneeti podcast.

“I think KL Rahul should be the vice-captain. You don't need to go back to the past, you need to look for the future. And for me, the most promising candidate for the position is KL Rahul," he added.

'Most promising candidate is...' - Former wicketkeeper-batsman picks Team India's vice-captain for SA Tests

Team India are set to leave for South Africa. The national side will play three Tests and equal number of ODIs in the African nation as the tour will kick off on December 26 with the first Test in Centurion. Ahead of the tour, India were dealt with a major blow with newly-appointed vice-captain Rohit Sharma being ruled out of the three Tests due to injury.&nbsp;

For the unversed, India have been hit with several injury concerns for the SA Tests. The likes of Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have already been ruled out. Thus, Rohit's injury added to India's woes. The team management have roped in Priyank Panchal for Rohit, however, they need to announce the new vice-captain as well for the Proteas challenge.&nbsp;

While many believe Ajinkya Rahane might once again be given the vice-captain's post for the SA series, there are many other contenders as well. India's No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara has served as the vice-captain on two occasions in the recent past. Many believe the post can also be given to a youngster like Rishabh Pant -- to groom him for the future -- or the likes of R Ashwin or Jasprit Bumrah. Nonetheless, KL Rahul seems to be the frontrunner.

"There’s no point in looking back. At the moment, the odds are tilted towards Rahul. Rahane is not a certainty to start in the playing XI (because of his poor form). “Even in the case of Ashwin, the team management has often not played him abroad. In that case, it’s tough to make either of them the vice-captain. The idea is to announce Kohli’s deputy in a day or two,” a source close to the selectors told Times of India.

Not Pujara or Bumrah! India's experienced campaigner frontrunner to be vice-captain for SA Tests: Report

Rohit Sharma had been recently appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, replacing senior batter Ajinkya Rahane ahead of the upcoming tour of South Africa. However, Rohit is now set to miss the three-match series following a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury while practising in Mumbai ahead of the Test series.

India A batter Priyank Panchal has been named Rohit's replacement for the three-match rubber as the Hitman faces a race against time to recover for the three ODIs that will be preceded by the Test series. India are scheduled to play three Tests as many ODIs on their tour of South Africa which gets underway from December 26.

While the BCCI has confirmed Panchal will be his replacement, it is not certain who will be taking over as the vice-captain of the team in his absence. Rahane is unlikely to be handed over the vice-captaincy role after being replaced and a younger player might get a chance to be Kohli's deputy in the series.&nbsp;

Here is a look at players who can replace Rohit Sharma as vice-captain for the South Africa Test series:

1) Rishabh Pant

One of the best performers for India with the bat in Test cricket over the last couple of years, Pant has finally cemented his spot in the Indian team across formats. He played numerous memorable knocks for India on their tour of Australia in 2020-21 to help them win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a second time in the row under Ajinkya Rahane. Pant also led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has done well as a captain. He can be a perfect fit for the vice-captain's role in order to be groomed as one of the future leaders of the Indian team in the longest format.

2) Jasprit Bumrah&nbsp;

One of the few members of the current Indian squad, who is a regular across all three formats, Jasprit Bumrah has been a consistent performer for the team ever since making his international debut in 2016. He will be one of the strongest contenders to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the South Africa series. Gifted with a great cricketing brain and exceptional skills, Bumrah has been a mainstay for Team India and has matured into a fine leader of the pace attack. With countries going against the idea of not handing over leadership roles to bowlers, Bumrah can be a perfect choice for vice-captaincy.

3) KL Rahul

KL Rahul can be an obvious choice considering he is also Rohit Sharma's deputy in limited-overs cricket. Rahul has been in and out of the Test team for a while now but can be a regular member of the playing XI in the South Africa Tests considering Rohit's injury and Rahane's poor form. Cheteshwar Pujara has also struggled of late which can open the door for Rahul's inclusion in the XI and he can be made Kohli's deputy in the longest format. He has also led Punjab Kings in the IPL for two seasons and is likely to lead whichever team he joins ahead of IPL 2022.&nbsp;

Three players who can replace Rohit Sharma as India's Test vice-captain for South Africa series

The calendar year is coming to an end. The year 2021 was filled with sporting events, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc in early 2020 and postponing many big-ticket tournaments.&nbsp;

Year 2021 had plenty of action on the 22-yard cricket strip. Talking about Team India, the senior men's team had some glorious highs along with two disheartening lows. While the optimists can claim that India maintained their hold in the top-3 in rankings across formats, one reality also remains that national side couldn't end their eight-year-long ICC-title drought.&nbsp;

Revisiting India's 2021, let us have a look at how Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma-starrer line-up performed in the calendar year:

Conquering all odds Down Under

Ajinkya Rahane-led India managed to draw the 2020/22 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the halfway stage before 2021 commenced. Coming to the third and penultimate Test, Rishabh Pant's scintillating 97, Cheteshwar Pujara's lengthy stay at the middle and blockathon from R Ashwin-Hanuna Vihari led to the series being wide open, at 1-1, going into the finale at The Gabba, Brisbane.&nbsp;

The fourth and final Test lived upto expectations. Second-stringed India were jolted further with injuries to Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin, Vihari, Jasprit Bumrah. However, they managed to keep themselves alive on the last day, chasing 328 to break Aussies' proud and unbeaten streak at the venue since 32 years.&nbsp;

<div class="twitter-block" draggable="false"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/wY6UyatwVTA" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>
<a class="close-mark close-div" href="#" id="jqclosemark">×</a></div>

Riding on Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur's fifties in the first essay, Mohammed Siraj's five-fer and Pant-Pujara's fighting knocks in the final innings, India chased down the total with three wickets in hand to win the series 2-1 in a dramatic fashion.&nbsp;

The Test would easily go down as one of the greatest heists pulled off by a second-stringed side in the toughest format.&nbsp;

England tour of India, 2021

Soon after the triumph versus the Aussies, India hosted England in an all-format tour of the Three Lions.&nbsp;

Test series: India 3, England 1

Losing the series opener, being in a tough spot in the second Test in Chennai, hearing several criticism around the Ahmedabad pitch, Kohli-led India won the four-match Test series 3-1 to confirm their slot in the inaugural WTC final.&nbsp;

The top-performers for the home side were Ashwin (32 wickets and a ton), Axar Patel (27 wickets in his debut series), Pant and Rohit Sharma's contributions with the willow.&nbsp;

Beating Eoin Morgan &amp; Co. in white-ball formats&nbsp;

The five T20Is and three ODIs followed suit. The white-ball series was expected to be a tougher assignment for hosts given England's strength in the shorter formats. The T20Is lived upto expectations before India won it 3-2 eventually. The three ODIs saw India go 1-0 up before Morgan-less England turned it around to level it at 1-1. Nonetheless, the series finale was a tough nut to crack for the hosts before finally winning it 2-1.&nbsp;

WTC final - One Where India Never Turned Up&nbsp;

After the England home series, Indian players featured in the IPL 2021 edition, which was cut-short due to the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in India. Getting a much-needed breather before WTC final, Team India finally reached the United Kingdom in early June (for WTC final and England Tests).

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) finale was much-awaited. Entering the final as the No. 1 ranked side, having beaten Australia in their own backyard, India were favourites versus the Black Caps. Nonetheless, India's wait for an ICC title, since 2013, extended as Kane Williamson &amp; Co. produced an all-round performance.

Being asked to bat first, at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, India were 70 for no loss before being bundled out for 217. In reply, NZ were dismissed for 249; gaining a vital 32-run. India had no answers to Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson's pace, swing and bounce as they were dismissed for 170 in the second innings, setting up a paltry 139-run target.

Kiwis, thus, closed the match with 8 wickets to spare and become the World Test Champions. Agony continued for India in ICC events.

India vs England, five Tests in the UK

After the shambles of the WTC final, India regrouped for&nbsp;the five Tests versus Joe Root-led England. Despite coming so close to the WTC title, India missed out in the final hurdle but had to revamp and start from scratch as the second cycle commenced with the England series.

Kohli-led India were up for the challenge. They came close to winning the five-match Test series opener in Edgbaston before rain washed out entire day five's proceedings. The second Test, at Lord's, brought more luck for India as they won their third Test at the venue, first after seven years, with a comprehensive 151-run margin. Jasprit Bumrah-Mohammed Shami's 89-run unbeaten ninth-wicket stand, KL Rahul's first-innings ton, Mohammed Siraj's eight-wicket haul led to India going 1-0 up despite conceding a 27-run lead.

<div class="ui-state-default" contenteditable="false">
<div class="twitter-block" draggable="false"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Y1J9_9-vNcU" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>

The third Test was a disaster for the visitors, losing by an innings and 76 runs. The fourth and penultimate Test once again tested Kohli's brigade to the core but they triumphed against all odds. Being asked to bat first, India were dismissed for 190, after reeling at 127-7 at one stage. To add to this, they conceded a 99-run lead before staging a comeback for the ages.

Riding on Rohit's 127 and fifties from Cheteshwar Pujara, Shardul Thakur (twin half-centuries in the match), Rishabh Pant and cameos from the tail, India set up a daunting 368-run target for Root &amp; Co. In reply, the hosts fell like nine pins, for 210, to lose by 151 runs. Thus, England gave an unassailable lead to the tourists.

The fifth and final Test, in Manchester, got cancelled at the last minute due to Covid-19 crisis in the Indian camp. The series decider will be held next year as Team India loyalists are desperately waiting for the national side's first-ever Test series win on English soil since 2007.

T20 World Cup 2021 - India succumb to new low

After the England Tests and final leg of IPL 2021, in the UAE, the action moved to the Men's T20 World Cup. Starting as one of the strongest contenders, India endured a horrible start. In their opening game, Kohli-led India lost to arch-rivals Pakistan for the first time in World Cup history (both in ODIs and T20Is). Losing by ten wickets, India had a herculean task to stage a comeback.

Nonetheless, more embarrassment awaited the one-time winners. India's losing streak versus New Zealand in ICC events, since 2007, continued as they were hammered by the Black Caps in their second outing. Starring on the brink of an early exit, India gathered themselves to pull off three convincing wins, however, the writing was on the wall long back.

India failed to move past the group stages with three wins from five encounters. Winning against the likes of Afghanistan, Scotland and Namibia didn't matter as the Pakistan and New Zealand encounters dented India's campaign severely.

New Zealand tour of India: Start of Rahul Dravid-era

Post the disheartening T20 WC, India began a new era under Rahul Dravid. After much hesitation, Dravid replaced Ravi Shastri to become India's head coach as the former all-rounder's tenure ended with the T20 WC campaign. In addition, Kohli stepped aside as the Indian captain in T20Is -- having made the official announcement prior to the mega event -- and was replaced by Rohit.

While Rohit-led India commenced a new journey in the shortest format with the home series versus NZ. Sans Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and the likes, India demolished the Black Caps 3-0. The two-match Test series followed suit.

It wasn't going to be easy versus the World Test champions. Hence, Williamson-led Kiwis held onto a fighting draw in the series opener, which saw Ajinkya Rahane leading the side in Kohli's absence. The second and final Test brought Kohli back in action as the hosts humbled the visitors at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Courtesy Mayank Agarwal's 150 and vital contributions from Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav and R Ashwin, India beat New Zealand by a whopping 372-run margin (their biggest win by runs).

India still have a Test left in the calendar year. They are scheduled to tour South Africa, comprising three Tests and ODIs each, but the tour-opener will commence on December 26 with the first Test at Centurion.

The ICC title wait, unearthing of young stars, change in leadership group

Overall, India had a topsy-turvy ride in 2021. While they continued to remain a solid unit across formats, they particularly flourished in bilateral series as an ICC title continues to evade them. Young stars such as Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Kishan, Pant, etc. made a mark whereas KL Rahul rose in prominence and stature. Kohli lost limited-overs captaincy altogether as Rohit-Dravid-era has commenced in the white-ball formats.

Team India will hope to continue their dominance at home and conquer more Test series away from home. However, their biggest aim would be to end their eight-year-long ICC-title drought.

The calendar year is coming to an end. The year 2021 was filled with sporting events, mainly due to the Covid-19 pandemic wreaking havoc in early 2020 and postponing many big-ticket tournaments.

Coming to the third and penultimate Test, Rishabh Pant's scintillating 97, Cheteshwar Pujara's lengthy stay at the middle and blockathon from R Ashwin-Hanuna Vihari led to the series being wide open, at 1-1, going into the finale at The Gabba, Brisbane. The fourth and final Test lived upto expectations. Second-stringed India were jolted further with injuries to Ravindra Jadeja, Ashwin, Vihari, Jasprit Bumrah. However, they managed to keep themselves alive on the last day, chasing 328 to break Aussies' proud and unbeaten streak at the venue since 32 years. × Riding on Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur's fifties in the first essay, Mohammed Siraj's five-fer and Pant-Pujara's fighting knocks in the final innings, India chased down the total with three wickets in hand to win the series 2-1 in a dramatic fashion. The Test would easily go down as one of the greatest heists pulled off by a second-stringed side in the toughest format. England tour of India, 2021 Soon after the triumph versus the Aussies, India hosted England in an all-format tour of the Three Lions. Test series: India 3, England 1 Losing the series opener, being in a tough spot in the second Test in Chennai, hearing several criticism around the Ahmedabad pitch, Kohli-led India won the four-match Test series 3-1 to confirm their slot in the inaugural WTC final. The top-performers for the home side were Ashwin (32 wickets and a ton), Axar Patel (27 wickets in his debut series), Pant and Rohit Sharma's contributions with the willow. Beating Eoin Morgan & Co. in white-ball formats The five T20Is and three ODIs followed suit. The white-ball series was expected to be a tougher assignment for hosts given England's strength in the shorter formats. The T20Is lived upto expectations before India won it 3-2 eventually. The three ODIs saw India go 1-0 up before Morgan-less England turned it around to level it at 1-1. Nonetheless, the series finale was a tough nut to crack for the hosts before finally winning it 2-1. Nonetheless, India's wait for an ICC title, since 2013, extended as Kane Williamson & Co. produced an all-round performance. × Being asked to bat first, at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, India were 70 for no loss before being bundled out for 217. India vs England, five Tests in the UK After the shambles of the WTC final, India regrouped for the five Tests versus Joe Root-led England. × The third Test was a disaster for the visitors, losing by an innings and 76 runs. Riding on Rohit's 127 and fifties from Cheteshwar Pujara, Shardul Thakur (twin half-centuries in the match), Rishabh Pant and cameos from the tail, India set up a daunting 368-run target for Root & Co. In reply, the hosts fell like nine pins, for 210, to lose by 151 runs. Thus, England gave an unassailable lead to the tourists. × The fifth and final Test, in Manchester, got cancelled at the last minute due to Covid-19 crisis in the Indian camp. The series decider will be held next year as Team India loyalists are desperately waiting for the national side's first-ever Test series win on English soil since 2007.

From conquering Aussies Down Under to T20 World Cup debacle: Team India in 2021

Rohit Sharma has replaced Virat Kohli as Team India's white-ball captain ahead of the team's tour of South Africa later this month. It will be the beginning of a new era for the Indian team under Rohit's leadership with a T20 World Cup and an ODI World Cup lined up in the next two years.

The move to replace Kohli as ODI captain came as a surprise to many as the Indian batter had made it clear in October this year that he is keen to lead the national team in Tests and ODIs after reliving the T20 captaincy. However, his captaincy stint in limited-overs cricket was cut short by BCCI, who opted for one captain for white-ball cricket.

While the move has drawn mixed reactions from fans and former cricketers, it remains to be seen who will take over the vice-captaincy spot in ODIs left vacant by Rohit after he was elevated to captaincy.&nbsp;BCCI is yet to announce India's vice-captain in ODIs ahead of the South Africa tour. Here is a look at three top candidates for vice-captaincy -

1) KL Rahul

KL Rahul was appointed as Rohit Sharma's deputy for his first T20I series as full-time captain of the Indian team against New Zealand at home. Rahul is favourite to take over as vice-captain in ODIs as well. He is one of the few players who is a regular in both ODIs and T20Is for India and has been a consistent performer with the bat. He also has the experience of leading Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League.

2) Rishabh Pant

India's first-choice wicket-keeper in white-ball cricket, Rishabh Pant can also be a good fit as a vice-captain looking ahead. Pant has been exceptional in Tests recently and has also cemented his spot in both ODIs and T20Is. He led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has been maturing as a leader. He can be groomed for a future leadership role as Rohit's deputy in ODIs at present.

3) Shreyas Iyer&nbsp;

Shreyas Iyer has been around the Indian setup for a while now as far as ODIs and T20Is are concerned. Though he was not part of the T20 World Cup 2021's main squad, he is seen as a vital cog in India's batting line-up and has proved his leadership qualities at Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Iyer was the first and the only captain to lead Delhi Capitals to the final of the IPL. He can be an ideal deputy to Rohit in the fifty-over format.

3 players who can become India's vice-captain after Rohit Sharma replaces Virat Kohli as ODI skipper

The Indian cricket team saw a number of highs and lows in what was an eventful 2021. Ajinkya Rahane inspired the side to a memorable 2-1 Test series win in Australia without the likes of Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and several other key players before India thrashed England at home to enter the final of the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship.

India lost the World Test Championship final against New Zealand but enjoyed a tremendous run in the Test series in England. The Men in Blue headed into the T20 World Cup 2021 as favourites but were dumped out of the group stages after back-to-back losses against Pakistan and New Zealand to endure a disappointing campaign.

As cricket experts and former cricketers join the bandwagon to choose the best performers of the year as far as the Indian cricket team is concerned, former batter Aakash Chopra has picked the 'cricketer of the year' for the Indian team. The popular commentator explained why he feels Rohit deserves the tag.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra picked Rohit as India's Test cricketer of the year for his consistent performances at home and away from home. Chopra said it was a pivotal year in Rohit's Test career and a different style of Hitman was at the display in the longest format.

"There are a lot of names that come to mind - Rishabh Pant's name comes because he has scored a lot of runs. He was the one who helped conquer Gabba in the end. But my Test batter of the year has to be Rohit Sharma. He played defining knocks," said Chopra.

"The conditions were difficult during England's tour of India and he scored runs. In the first innings of the second Test in Chennai - he was on one side and the entire team, including the opposition, was on the other side. The quality of batting that was on display. Then when he went to England, once again he kept on fighting and stood there. We saw a different style of Rohit Sharma's batting," he added.

Rohit scored 906 runs at an average of 47.6 in 11 Test matches in the year 2021 including two centuries. When it came to T20Is, Chopra once again picked Rohit as India's player of the year in the shortest format despite great competition from the likes of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul among others.

"In T20Is, you think about Rahul but he has not scored that many runs. Kohli has also not scored that many runs. You will remember Suryakumar and Ishan Kishan's names as well but in my opinion, once again it is Rohit Sharma," said Chopra.

He was also appointed as India's T20 captain post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021 and has now also been handed over the ODI captaincy. Chopra honoured Rohit with India's player of the year 2021 tag and called it his year as far as Indian cricket is concerned.

"This year has been different because the strike rate has gone up and the average has also gone up. He has been given the T20I captaincy also now. So, the best Test batter and the best T20 batter is Rohit Sharma - this is the year of Rohit Sharma," said the former India cricketer.

No Virat Kohli, KL Rahul! Aakash Chopra names India's best player of the year 2021

Team India is going through rapid changes post the T20 World Cup. Well, it was a given following how disappointing the campaign turned out to be for the one-time winners.&nbsp;

On Wednesday (December 8), BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain, after he had already taken over as the T20I captain post the World Cup. As per reports, Virat Kohli was given two days to announce his stepping down but since the right-hander didn't respond, BCCI went ahead and made the call themselves.&nbsp;

Not only this, Rohit also got promoted as the vice-captain of the Test side, due to Ajinkya Rahane's low returns. Thus, all eyes are on who will be Rohit's deputy in the ODI format. BCCI haven't revealed the new vice-captain in the 50-over format, hence, another big update will follow suit in the coming days.&nbsp;

As per a report in TOI, KL Rahul is touted to be the new vice-captain in ODI cricket. For the unversed, he is already Rohit's deputy in the shortest format, hence, it will make sense for him to take up the same role in ODIs.

Who will be Rohit Sharma's deputy in ODIs? KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant in contention: Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is all set to become a ten-team tournament from the 2022 season with the inclusion of two new teams - Lucknow and Ahmedabad. While the existing eight IPL teams have already revealed the list of retained players ahead of the mega auction which is set to take place before the start of the new season, Lucknow and Ahmedabad have been given the right to pick three players each from the pool of non-retained players.

While both Lucknow and Ahmedabad IPL franchises will be looking to pick quality players from the pool of the non-retained ones ahead of the mega auction, they would also be looking to secure the signing of their respective captains. Both Ahmedabad and Lucknow franchises will be on the lookout for captaincy candidates who can be picked before the mega auction to build the team around them.

A number of top Indian and overseas players have been let go of by their respective franchises who can become the future leaders of the two new IPL teams. The likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer among others will be on the radar of not just the two new teams but several others, who will be looking to get a new captain ahead of the new season.

Here is a look at 5 potential captaincy candidates for two new IPL teams:

KL Rahul&nbsp;

KL Rahul is one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Lucknow IPL team and is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings. Rahul has been reportedly offered a staggering deal of Rs 20 crore (INR 200 million) per year to join the Lucknow team ahead of the new season.

One of the best Indian batters in the IPL over the last few years, Rahul led Punjab for two seasons in 2020 and 2021. While he was consistent with the bat on the personal front, Rahul failed to inspire his side to playoffs in both seasons. Nonetheless, he has been one of the best batters in the league for the last few years and is a great captaincy prospect for both the new teams.

Shreyas Iyer

Another Indian star, who has the experience of captaining an IPL team, Shreyas Iyer will also be on the radar of the two new teams for the captaincy role. Iyer left Delhi Capitals in search of a leadership role after leading the franchise for two and a half seasons. Iyer helped DC make it to their first final in 2020 and was exceptional as a leader.&nbsp;

His stature in the IPL has grown over the years and it won't be a surprise if an IPL team ropes him in as their new skipper. Iyer has plenty of experience behind his back having played 87 matches in IPL. He has 2375 runs to his name at an average of over 31.

David Warner&nbsp;

One of the best overseas batters in the league over the years, David Warner was released by his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad after a fallout during IPL 2021. Warner was sacked from captaincy midway through the IPL 2021 before being dropped from the playing XI by SRH. He remains the only captain to have led SRH to an IPL title in 2016 and will be a strong captaincy contender for both the new teams as well as some other franchises.

While he has a plethora of experience as a captain, Warner has been a consistent performer as a batter in the IPL. He has the highest runs among the overseas batters in the history of the league and fifth overall with 5449 runs in 150 games at a stunning average of over 41.

Steve Smith&nbsp;

Steve Smith has not had great campaigns in the IPL in the last few years but he remains an experienced leader who is capable of taking over the captaincy role for a top IPL side considering his experience and pedigree. Smith has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past.&nbsp;

He had led Rising Pune Supergiant to their maiden final in the 2017 season where they lost against Mumbai Indians just by 1 run. Smith has been part of the IPL since 2012 and the former Australia skipper can be a great leader for any team. He has 2485 runs to his name in 103 IPL matches at an average of over 34.

Ben Stokes

Here is a look at 5 potential captaincy candidates for two new IPL teams: KL Rahul KL Rahul is one of the favourites to take over as the captain of the Lucknow IPL team and is reportedly in negotiations with the franchise after leaving Punjab Kings. Iyer left Delhi Capitals in search of a leadership role after leading the franchise for two and a half seasons. Iyer helped DC make it to their first final in 2020 and was exceptional as a leader. His stature in the IPL has grown over the years and it won't be a surprise if an IPL team ropes him in as their new skipper. Iyer has plenty of experience behind his back having played 87 matches in IPL. He has 2375 runs to his name at an average of over 31. David Warner One of the best overseas batters in the league over the years, David Warner was released by his former team Sunrisers Hyderabad after a fallout during IPL 2021. Steve Smith Steve Smith has not had great campaigns in the IPL in the last few years but he remains an experienced leader who is capable of taking over the captaincy role for a top IPL side considering his experience and pedigree. Smith has led Rising Pune Supergiant and Rajasthan Royals in the past.
