Jofra Archer is poised to make an eagerly-anticipated England comeback in the new year after being named Thursday in a 14-strong squad for a three-match one-day international series in South Africa.

Sussex fast bowler Archer made a dramatic entry onto the international stage in 2019 when he became one of the stars of England's 50-over World Cup triumph.

But he has not played international cricket since March 2021 due to injury.

The 27-year-old Barbados-born quick suffered several elbow problems, which led to two operations, before his hopes of a return to action were dashed by a stress fracture of the lower back in May that ruled him out of the 2022 English season.

Archer, however, played for the second-string England Lions in a warm-up match against the Test side in Abu Dhabi last month ahead of the senior team's 3-0 whitewash of Pakistan.

Just six balls into the practice match, Archer hit Zak Crawley on the helmet with a bouncer.

An England and Wales Cricket Board statement issued Thursday said Archer was "recovering well from an elbow injury and is expected to return to international cricket in South Africa next month".

Meanwhile, rising star Harry Brook, fresh from three superb Test hundreds in Pakistan and England's T20 World Cup win in Australia, has been called into an ODI squad for the first time.

The 23-year-old Yorkshireman has been a mainstay during an already busy England tour programme but team management have decided against resting him ahead of a Test series in New Zealand in February.

Outstanding batsman Joe Root and express fast bowler Mark Wood have though been left out, though, as England look to manage the workloads of their multi-format players.

Opener Ben Duckett, who played the last of his three ODIs in 2016, has been recalled to the 50-over set-up after regaining his England place at T20 and Test level in recent months.

Left-arm quick Reece Topley, unluckily ruled out of the T20 World Cup campaign after tripping on a boundary sponge, has also been included in a squad that will again be led by white-ball captain Jos Buttler.

But all-rounder Liam Livingstone has been ruled out with the knee injury he suffered on Test debut against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.

The three-match contest in South Africa is a rearranged series that was initially abandoned in December 2020 after a Covid-19 scare prompted England to fly home early.

It will be played over six days, with two fixtures in Bloemfontein starting on January 27 before the final game takes place in Kimberley on February 1.

Mumbai Indians made England pacer Jofra Archer their priority signing on the second day of the mega auction and went all guns blazing to get him despite him not being available for the IPL 2022 season due to his ongoing recovery from an elbow injury. Archer will be in action in the IPL from the 2023 season.

The acquisition of Archer became one of the major talking points on social media as Mumbai Indians fans relished the prospect of having Jasprit Bumrah and Archer bowl in tandem for the five-time champions from the 2023 season onwards. Apart from Bumrah and Archer, MI also added pacers like&nbsp;Basil Thampi, Jaydev Unadkat and Tymal Mills to further strengthen their pace attack.

While the MI fans were surprised with the team's strategy, the former champions went for England pacer Archer, who had represented Rajasthan Royals (RR) since his debut season in 2018. For the unversed, Archer is highly unlikely to&nbsp;be available for the forthcoming IPL 2022 edition, in India, however, the MI Paltan have invested in him keeping the future seasons in mind.&nbsp;

Indian fast bowler Prasidh Krishna bowled an exceptional spell in the second ODI of the ongoing three-match series against West Indies on Wednesday. Krishna was the pick of the bowlers for India as he bagged a four-wicket haul to help the hosts defend the total of 237 runs and clinch a comfortable win by 44 runs.

It was an excellent display of fast bowling from the young pacer, who maintained great line and length while bowling at a good pace to wreak havoc on the West Indies batting line-up. Troll calls Jofra Archer 'fraud, traitor, unfit' over Prasidh Krishna comparisons, England pacer responds

England pacer Jofra Archer is back in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction after initially opting not to register for the mega event. Archer was one of the big names to not register for the auction amid his ongoing battle with an elbow injury for which he underwent a second operation in December last year.

Archer was expected to not return to the mega auction after not putting his name in the initial list. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday confirmed the England fast bowler has enlisted his name for the event which is scheduled to be conducted in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13.

However, Archer is unlikely to take part in IPL 2022 and is all set to give the league a miss despite being part of the auction. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has informed the BCCI that the fast bowler is certain to play in the 2023 and the 2024 editions but is unlikely to take part in IPL 2022 this year owing to his injury.&nbsp;

The BCCI has informed all ten franchises about the same and said that the pacer should be picked by a franchise keeping in mind that he will not play in the upcoming season. "The ECB has registered Archer for the auction with a view to potential participation in 2023 and 2024, as due to his current injury it is unlikely that he can participate in IPL 2022," the board wrote to the franchises, as per Cricbuzz.

One of the best fast bowlers in the world at present, Archer has been impressive in the IPL in the three seasons that he has been part of the league for Rajasthan Royals. He has 46 wickets to his name in 35 matches at a brilliant economy of just 7.13 and is one of the most economical fast bowlers in the league at present.

"(Archer) had a further injection for the right elbow injury that had seen him declared unfit for selection for the current ODI series versus India," the ECB said in a statement.

The pacer is set to miss the start of the upcoming Indian Premier League. He plays for Rajasthan Royals.&nbsp;

"The procedure on Jofra's hand will take place on Monday... so he can recover during the planned break following his elbow injection.

"Further investigation and a specialist opinion was sought upon his return to the UK and, in conjunction with the ECB medical panel, it has been decided that surgery is the best option to manage his injury in the longer term."

The board even explained the reason behind the injury. They said: "Jofra suffered a cut to his hand while cleaning at his home in January shortly before flying to India to prepare for the Test series. The injury was managed by the ECB’s medical team through the tour and it did not impact on his availability."

Archer missed the first Test against India after sustaining an elbow injury but made a strong comeback in the second match. He played a crucial role for the visitors in the T20I series too picking up a career-best 4-33 in the fourth match in Ahmedabad. But was ruled out of the ODI series due to injury.
