England paceman Jofra Archer has been awarded a central contract for Test and white-ball cricket for the first time after making an impact during the World Cup and the Ashes.

Archer, 24, was England's leading wicket-taker in their triumphant World Cup campaign. He then took 22 wickets at an average of 20.27 in four Tests against Australia. His bowling touched speeds in the mid-90-miles-per-hour range in a scintillating debut international summer.

The Barbados-born Archer, who only became England qualified earlier this year, is one of 10 players to receive a Test deal for the 2019/20 season. Another is opener Rory Burns, who cemented his spot at the top of the order with some battling performances in the Ashes.

Spin duo Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid have lost their central Test contracts but are in a list of 12, also including Joe Denly, to be handed less lucrative white-ball deals.

Moeen was dropped from the World Cup squad towards the end of the group stage before a dismal showing in the Ashes opener. He did not appear for the rest of the series.

Rashid was a regular for England in the Test side last year but lost his place during the winter tour of the West Indies and was unused against Australia, although he is a regular in captain Eoin Morgan's white-ball set-up.

Test contracts: J. Anderson (Lancashire), J. Archer (Sussex), J. Bairstow (Yorkshire), S. Broad (Nottinghamshire), R. Burns (Surrey), J. Buttler (Lancashire), S. Curran (Surrey), J. Root (Yorkshire), B. Stokes (Durham), C. Woakes (Warwickshire).

England's Jofra Archer rewarded with contracts after impressive debut season

Jofra Archer took six wickets as England bowled Australia out for 225 to gain the upper hand on the second day of the fifth Ashes Test on Friday despite another Steve Smith masterclass.

Joe Root's team are desperate to level the series at 2-2 to end their historic World Cup-winning season on a high but have been consistently dogged by the peerless Smith.

The former Australian skipper has now amassed 751 runs in just six innings -- more than double the tally of the next highest runscorer on either side.

But he was forced to settle for his lowest score of the series — 80 — when Chris Woakes trapped him lbw in the evening session, leaving the sun-drenched Oval crowd dumbfounded.

Despite a late flurry of runs, Australia had to settle for a first-innings deficit of 69, with paceman Archer finishing with figures of 6-62.

Smith came to the crease with Australia in trouble at 14-2 in reply to England's first-innings total of 294 after Archer had removed openers David Warner and Marcus Harris.

Smith, who only returned to Test cricket last month following a year-long ban for his role in a ball-tampering scandal, was watchful at the start of his innings.

But he soon found his touch, bringing up his 10th consecutive Ashes fifty with a six over midwicket off left-arm spinner Jack Leach.

Smith appeared to be playing a completely different game from all the other batsmen but he had a lucky escape after tea when, on 66, he edged a Sam Curran delivery to Root in the slips, only for the England skipper to shell the chance.

Earlier, Warner, who was also banned over the ball-tampering scandal, was again dismissed for single figures, caught behind by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow.

Warner struggles

It was the eighth time that Warner had&nbsp;been dismissed in single figures in the series.

Archer then struck again with a 90-miles-per-hour thunderbolt, with Ben Stokes holding onto a sharp chance from Harris at second slip.

That dismissal brought Smith to the crease and he was immediately greeted with a&nbsp;sharp bouncer, much to the delight of the packed crowd.

Smith and Marcus Labuschagne repaired the early damage, putting on 69 for the third wicket before Archer struck again, trapping Labuschagne lbw for 48.

Matthew Wade was lbw to Sam Curran for 19 as Australia slipped to 118-4 but the unruffled Smith eased to his half-century off 91 balls.

Wickets tumbled after tea, with Archer removing Mitchell Marsh and Curran dismissing Australia captain Tim Paine and Pat Cummins in successive balls.

Smith's dismissal left Australia 187-8 but Peter Siddle and Nathan Lyon played enterprisingly to add 37 for the ninth wicket, with Lyon smashing Woakes for a six over square leg.

Archer bowled Lyon while Rory Burns took a sensational catch to end Siddle's knock.

At the start of the day England added just 23 runs to their overnight score, with Jos Buttler out for 70.

Marsh took five wickets on his return to the Test side while Pat Cummins took three.

Australia won at Old Trafford last week to take a 2-1 lead in the series, meaning they will retain the Ashes urn regardless of the result at the Oval.

But they are hungry to wrap up their first series win in England since 2001.

Jofra Archer claims six wickets as England take charge of Ashes finale

Jofra Archer's first five-wicket haul in Test cricket put England in command on a weather-affected opening day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley on Thursday as they bowled Australia out for 179.

Archer completed figures of 6-45 in his second Test, Australia collapsing from 136-2 in the final session to give England a good start as they bid to level the series.

"I didn't do too much differently from Lord's," Archer said. "It was a bit bowler-friendly today, at times it did go flat and the ball stopped swinging but it started again.

"I'll more than take 6-45 but I can be tidier in the future," he added. "It's been really good so far, from the moment I've put the badge on, it's been the happiest days of cricket so far and hopefully plenty more ahead."

David Warner made 61 and Marnus Labuschagne 74 in the only substantial innings for the touring side, Labuschagne making his second fifty in a row since replacing Steve Smith who was struck by an Archer bouncer in the second Test and ruled out of the third match due to concussion symptoms.

"It's disappointing it happened like that but they won the toss, bowled and had the conditions in their favour," Warner said.

"They were patient and our top order got out to good balls, with a couple of strangles as well," he added.

"It was very challenging in that first half-hour. I probably played and missed 35 times but that happens and a little bit of luck comes into it. You just have to work out how to survive."

England captain Joe Root put Australia in to bat on a wet morning in Leeds.

Stuart Broad and Archer bowled well and after Warner had survived a few scares, Marcus Harris, replacing Cameron Bancroft in the side, edged Archer to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow for eight.

The weather cleared up briefly early in the afternoon session and Broad had Usman Khawaja caught down the leg-side by Bairstow.

After further rain delays, Warner started to find his timing and the left-hander brought up his first half-century of the series with another boundary.

Labuschagne, as he did at Lord’s when he was Smith’s concussion substitute, batted with great composure and reached his half-century from 72 balls.

Archer ended Warner’s resistance, Bairstow taking another catch, and Broad bowled Travis Head for nought with a perfect delivery that hit the top of off stump.

Matthew Wade also fell for a duck off the bowling of Archer when the ball rolled on to the stumps around his legs.

Tim Paine became Chris Woakes’s first victim, given out lbw after a review, and James Pattinson was caught by Root at first slip off Archer for two.

Archer found the edge of Pat Cummins’s bat, his dismissal confirmed after a review, and Ben Stokes ended Labuschagne’s innings, trapping him lbw with a full toss.

Nathan Lyon was last to go in the final over, lbw to Archer to complete a memorable day for the Barbados-born fast bowler.

Jofra Archer gives England advantage in third Ashes Test, Australia 179 all out

Australia's Steve Smith has been ruled out of the last day of the second Ashes Test against England at Lord's on Sunday <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australia-cricket-union-condemns-boos-after-steve-smith-felled-by-jofra-archer-243836">with concussion</a>, Cricket Australia (CA) have announced.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australias-steve-smith-retires-hurt-after-being-hit-by-jofra-archer-bouncer-243695">Smith was hit by a Jofra Archer bouncer</a> on Saturday and although he resumed his innings after retiring hurt, further tests saw CA deem him unfit to play on Sunday with his participation in the third Test, which starts on Thursday, also in doubt.

"Steve has been closely monitored by medical staff overnight and this morning reported that after sleeping well, he woke with 'a bit of a headache and a feeling of grogginess'," said am Australian team spokesman.

The series is the first being played under the International Cricket's new concussion substitute regulations, part of the inaugural World Test Championship, which allow players who have suffered head or neck injuries to be replaced fully by a substitute, who was previously restricted to fielding alone.

Marnus Labuschagne, on the field as 12th man when play resumed Sunday, became the first concussion substitute in Test history after Australia's request was approved by match referee Ranjan Madugalle.

Labuschagne can now bat or bowl in Smith's place if required, unlike traditional substitutes who were restricted to fielding.

There are doubts whether star batsman Smith will feature in the third Test at Headingley starting on Thursday. The spokesman saying "the short turnaround is not in his favour".

Smith was hit by an Archer bouncer when on 80 on Saturday and retired hurt.

He resumed his innings at the fall of the next wicket after 46 minutes off the field, and was eventually out for 92 -- the first time this series he had been dismissed for fewer than 100 runs.

Ashes 2019: Australia's Steve Smith out of second Test with concussion

Australia's cricket union Sunday slammed fans at Lord's for booing <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australias-steve-smith-retires-hurt-after-being-hit-by-jofra-archer-bouncer-243695">Steve Smith after he was felled by a bouncer from fast bowler Jofra Archer</a>, saying the sport deserves better.

The star batsman collapsed face forward after a sickening blow to the side of the neck and head when on 80 during Australia's first innings of the second Ashes Test against England on Saturday.

He was eventually able to walk off the field for concussion checks to a standing ovation after another gritty performance.&nbsp;

But when he returned some fans booed him, mirroring the treatment he has received from sections of the crowd in England keen to remind him of his 12-month ban for ball-tampering.

The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA), which represents players, said it was wrong to hurl abuse at an injured player.

"Cricket deserves much better than that. And Lord's, the home of cricket, deserves much better than that also," president Greg Dyer and chief executive Alistair Nicholson said in a joint statement.&nbsp;

"What we witnessed was bravery from an outstanding young man. It should be commended not vilified.

"Over the English summer, generally the crowds have been terrific and really added to the contest. But when someone is hurt, yet the boos continue, it's time to call 'enough'."

Several former Australian greats also condemned the behaviour with Ian Healy calling it "disgusting" while Mark Taylor said it was "very disappointing".

While angry at Smith's treatment by some fans, the ACA applauded the decision by medics to insist the 30-year-old leave the field for concussion checks, a protocol pushed by Australia following the death of Phillip Hughes in 2014.

Hughes, a former team-mate of Smith's, died after being hit by a bouncer in a domestic Sheffield Shield match in Sydney.

"The events at Lord's show the importance of the concussion protocols which have been developed in Australia over the last few years," it said.

"Administrators in Australia working with the ACA and now the ICC have done a good job in putting the protocols in place. Plainly, they are necessary to protect the players who are struck.

"Let's remind ourselves -- this is a workplace for these players," it added. "The reality is that cricket can be a dangerous sport, especially when the bowling is as ferocious as it has been in this series.

"To see the protocols practised at Lord's overnight was important and correct."

While Smith was wearing a helmet it did not have the additional neck protection that was introduced after Hughes died, which remains optional.

Australia coach Justin Langer said after Saturday's scare that he can see a time when it becomes mandatory.

"To see the protocols practised at Lord's overnight was important and correct." While Smith was wearing a helmet it did not have the additional neck protection that was introduced after Hughes died, which remains optional. Australia coach Justin Langer said after Saturday's scare that he can see a time when it becomes mandatory.

Australia cricket union condemns boos after Steve Smith felled by Jofra Archer

Former Pakistan bowler Shoaib Akhtar criticised England pacer Jofra Archer for not checking up on Australian batsman Steve Smith after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/australias-steve-smith-retires-hurt-after-being-hit-by-jofra-archer-bouncer-243695">striking him on the neck by a bouncer</a>.&nbsp;

"Bouncers are a part &amp; parcel of the game but whenever a bowler hits a batsman on the head and he falls, courtesy requires that the bowler must go &amp; check on him. It was not nice of Archer to just walk away while Smith was in pain. I was always the first one to run to the batsman," Akhtar tweeted on Sunday.&nbsp;

Smith had to deal with two blows on day four of the second Test match at Lord's Cricket Ground. Firstly he was struck on the elbow by Archer and soon after he received a striking blow on the neck by a bouncer bowled by the pacer and he immediately went down.&nbsp;

Physios from both England and Australia attended Smith, but the batsman had to leave the park in order to have a concussion test. A little while later, the batsman made his way back to the crease, but a section of England crowd was seen booing the player.

Smith went on to play a knock of 92 runs against England in the first innings of the second Test match.

The right-handed batsman has been in a rich vein of form as he struck centuries in both innings of the first Test match. He became only the fifth Australian to score centuries in both innings of Ashes Test.

He also surpassed Indian skipper Virat Kohli to become the second-fastest batsman to register 25 Test centuries.

Ever since, Australia landed in Australia to play the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and Ashes, Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have been subjected to boos from the England crowd.

The trio was involved in a ball-tampering scandal against South Africa in 2018 and this resulted in the players getting suspended for one year.

In the ongoing second Test of the Ashes, England will resume day five at 96/4 with a lead of 104 in the second innings.

Shoaib Akhtar criticises Jofra Archer for not checking up on Steve Smith

Australia batsman Steve Smith was forced to retire hurt after being hit on the side of the head by a Jofra Archer bouncer on the fourth day of the second Ashes Test at Lord's on Saturday.

Smith was in sight of his third successive Ashes hundred when, on 80, he turned his head away from an express delivery from England fast bowler Archer timed at 92.4 mph.

The star batsman fell face forward onto the ground and received several minutes of on-field treatment involving both Australian and England medical staffs amid concerns he could be concussed.

He eventually got to his feet and then, after a prolonged conversation with Australia team doctor Richard Saw, decided to retire hurt with Smith receiving a generous round of applause as he walked back into the pavilion.

Ashes 2019: Australia's Steve Smith retires hurt after being hit by Jofra Archer bouncer

England fast bowler Jofra Archer marked his Test debut with a wicket as Australia suffered a top-order collapse before rain cut short play at Lord's on Friday.

Australia lost three wickets for 11 runs en route to slumping to 80-4 when rain forced an early lunch on the third day of the second Test.

That left Australia 178 runs behind England's first-innings 258.

The 24.1 overs that took place in the morning session represented the only action on Friday, with persistent rain leading the umpires to eventually abandon play for the day at 5:22 pm local time (1622 GMT) in a match where Wednesday's scheduled first day had already been washed out without a ball bowled. &nbsp;

Archer, on the ground where he bowled the Super Over that saw England seal a World Cup final win over New Zealand last month, had fine figures of one wicket for 18 runs in 13 overs.

Stuart Broad led the way with 2-26 in 13 overs, while fellow seamer Chris Woakes chipped in with 1-27 in nine.

But Australia star batsman Steve Smith was still there on 13 not out, with Matthew Wade unbeaten on nought.

'Long way to go'

Broad insisted there was still enough time left in the game to force a win.

"There's certainly hope for both sides," he told reporters. "This pitch has got 10 good balls in it in each day. I think we'll get 98 overs in the next two days, so I think there is chance of a result."

Meanwhile former Australia captain Steve Waugh, a mentor to the current squad, said: "There is a long way to go in the game... We're still 178 behind. That's our first target.

"If we can get there and get some more runs after that, we believe we're in with a chance. We're a long way away from that.

"Both sides, I think, will be confident they can force a victory but there is a lot of work to be done."

Australia, 1-0 up in the five-match series after their 251-run win in the first Test at Edgbaston, resumed on 30-1 having seen Broad dismiss David Warner cheaply for the third time in as many innings this Ashes.

Play started under gloomy skies, the floodlights on at full beam, with conditions difficult for batting.

Cameron Bancroft was five not out and Usman Khawaja 18 not out following a lively opening spell by Archer, in for the injured James Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, late on Thursday.

Khawaja struck two offside fours in as many balls when first-change Woakes dropped short.

But England altered the momentum with two wickets for no runs in four balls as Australia's 60-1 became 60-3.

Archer, topping speeds of 90 mph, had his first Test wicket when he nipped one back sharply to have Bancroft lbw for 13.

The 24-year-old Sussex paceman's celebrations were put on hold as the struggling opener reviewed before replays indicated the ball would have clipped the top of the stumps.

There were some boos as Smith, fresh from twin hundreds at Edgbaston in his comeback Test following a 12-month ball-tampering ban, came into bat.

He could only watch as Woakes, with England at last bowling over the wicket to Khawaja, induced an outside edge to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow that saw the left-hander caught for 36.

Australia were 71-4 when Broad had Travis Head lbw for seven following an England review.

All-rounder Ben Stokes thought he had Edgbaston century-maker Wade lbw for a duck but the batsman's review revealed the ball had pitched outside leg stump.

Australia hold the Ashes but are bidding for their first Test series win away to England in 18 years.

Archer strikes as Australia slump before rain intervenes again in second Ashes Test

England pace bowler Jofra Archer warned the Australian batsmen on Monday that he is not just a one-day cricketer and said he will try to "work miracles" if he faces them at Lord's in the Ashes this week.

The 24-year-old Barbados-born seamer, who starred for his adopted country in their World Cup triumph, missed the first Test defeat at Edgbaston because of a side strain.

But, with James Anderson ruled out with a calf injury, Archer is now in line to play in the second Test which starts at Lord's on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Archer proved his fitness playing for Sussex in a 2nd XI match against Gloucestershire during which he took 6-27 in the first innings and then scored 108.&nbsp;

He said the Australians would be fooling themselves if they thought he would offer rich pickings on his Test debut.

"I've played a lot more red-ball cricket and it's my preferred format," Archer said at a press conference on Monday.

"If you don't have a good 10 overs (in white-ball cricket) that's it. You've got to wait to the next game, but you've ample chances in Test cricket.

"I'm more ready than I've ever been.

"I bowled 50 overs in one game for Sussex and am the one usually bowling at the end.

"Test cricket is pretty much the same as first-class. Know what your strengths are and stick to them."

Archer, whose father Frank is British, became eligible to play for England under the three-year residency rule earlier this year.&nbsp;

Miracle worker

He said Lord's brought back happy memories of England's victory over New Zealand in a thrilling World Cup final in July during which Archer was entrusted with bowling the Super Over which clinched the trophy.

"The first one (appearance) is always special, and (to be) at Lord's where we had recent success will be comforting as well," said Archer.

"It's a good ground to come back to, and hopefully keep our winning ways here.

"I'll try and work miracles but I can only give my best."

Australia coach Justin Langer said his batsmen would hopefully be able to weather the storm from his first spell and then score freely in his later sessions.&nbsp;

"Hopefully our guys have got the answers whatever he (Archer) dishes up for us," Langer said at his press conference.

"Most of our guys have seen him in white-ball cricket. It's up to the individuals, not so much our game plan against him.

"Our batters will be organised in their minds how they are going to face him, and the rest of England's attack.

"It's the same for everyone in Test cricket, get them into their second, third and fourth spells."

England have dropped Moeen Ali and recalled fellow spinner Jack Leach into a 12-man squad for the second Ashes Test against Australia at Lord's starting on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, World Cup-winner Jofra Archer could make his Test debut next week.

Moeen was omitted after a miserable first Test at Edgbaston, which England lost by 251 runs on Monday to go 1-0 down in the five-match series.

The 32-year-old all-rounder only managed returns of 1-42 and 2-130 with the ball, while scoring just four runs in the match -- including a first-innings duck.

On both occasions, he was dismissed by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who has now claimed Moeen's wicket nine times in 11 innings.

Somerset left-armer Leach played his last Test against Ireland at Lord's a fortnight ago when he made a career-best 92.&nbsp;

England already knew they would be without James Anderson, their all-time leading Test wicket-taker, after the Lancashire paceman broke down with a calf injury after bowling just four overs at Edgbaston.

Fast bowler Olly Stone, who was in the squad for the first Test but did not play, has been ruled out with a back injury.

But England do have a potential stand-in for Anderson in Archer, who missed the first Test because of a side injury but has since proved his fitness in a second-team match for county side Sussex.

England also have another seam-bowling option in Surrey left-armer Sam Curran.

England drop Moeen Ali and call-up Jack Leach, Jofra Archer for second Ashes Test

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat in the first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/anderson-could-hold-key-to-ashes-says-mcgrath-239251">Ashes</a> Test against England at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Ashes-holders Australia has not won a match of any kind at Edgbaston since 2001, while England has won their past 11 internationals at the Birmingham ground.

Australia is looking for their first <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ashes-contest-too-close-to-call-says-former-australia-captain-steve-waugh-238960">Ashes series win</a> in England in 18 years.

"The wicket looks nice and hard and dry," said Tim Paine at the toss. "Hopefully we post a good total and we've got (off-spinner) Nathan Lyon up our sleeve at the back end of the game."

As expected, the visitors included all three players given lengthy bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year -- David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and former captain Steve Smith.

Openers Bancroft and Warner knew they would be booed on their way to the middle, judging by the hostile reception Warner and top-order batsman Smith received during the recent World Cup in England and Wales.

They did not have to wait even that long to face the boo-boys, with the Australia team as a whole jeered onto the field for a pre-match anthem ceremony -- an unusual occurrence before a Test match in England.

Reserve wicketkeeper Matthew Wade was included as a specialist batsman after making three hundred for Australia A on their tour of England.&nbsp;

Usman Khawaja was also back in the top order following a hamstring injury that cut short his involvement in the World Cup, which saw Australia defeated by eventual champions England in an Edgbaston semi-final.

Australia also included experienced paceman Peter Siddle, who has been playing English county cricket this season for Essex, in an attack featuring James Pattinson and Pat Cummins.

"He's a class performer there," said wicketkeeper Paine. "He complements the other two seamers really nicely."

But there was no place for World Cup spearhead Mitchell Starc. &nbsp;

England captain Joe Root named his side on Wednesday.

James Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, returned after missing last week's win in a one-off Test against Ireland at Lord's.

But World Cup hero Jofra Archer was left waiting for a Test debut after struggling with a side injury.

Fellow World Cup winners Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler returned after being rested against Ireland.

Root had no qualms about losing the toss, saying: "I'm not disappointed at all. It's overcast conditions. It'll be nice to get off to a good start.

"We've go so many great options to go to, especially with the ball. This morning is a great opportunity to exploit that.&nbsp;

"We love playing here, we get fantastic support wherever we go. The atmosphere here, in particular, is extremely exciting."

The Edgbaston match is the first of a five-Test series and the first of the ICC's new World Test Championship, with players' names and squad numbers displayed on the backs of their shirts for the first time in this format.&nbsp;

Australia captain Tim Paine won the toss and decided to bat in the first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston on Thursday. Ashes-holders Australia has not won a match of any kind at Edgbaston since 2001, while England has won their past 11 internationals at the Birmingham ground.

Ashes-holders Australia has not won a match of any kind at Edgbaston since 2001, while England has won their past 11 internationals at the Birmingham ground. Australia is looking for their first Ashes series win in England in 18 years. "The wicket looks nice and hard and dry," said Tim Paine at the toss. "Hopefully we post a good total and we've got (off-spinner) Nathan Lyon up our sleeve at the back end of the game." As expected, the visitors included all three players given lengthy bans for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa last year -- David Warner, Cameron Bancroft and former captain Steve Smith. Australia win toss and bat against England in first Ashes Test

England captain Joe Root is looking forward to having "natural leader" Ben Stokes back alongside him as his Test deputy during the Ashes.

The pair have been friends since their days playing youth cricket, with Root lobbying for Stokes's return to a position the all rounder held until he was involved in a street brawl in Bristol in 2017.

Stokes missed five months of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/international-cricket-council-officially-launches-world-test-championship-239182">international cricket</a>, including England's 4-0 Ashes series loss in Australia under Root, before being cleared of affray in a court case in August 2018.

But the 28-year-old was one of the stars of England's triumphant World Cup campaign earlier this season and Root, also involved in that success, is eager to have Stokes back as his Test vice captain after Jos Buttler took over the role.

"I have asked for a long time (to have Stokes back as vice-captain) but he was made available at the end of the World Cup," Root said during his pre match press conference at Edgbaston on Wednesday, on the eve of the series opener.&nbsp;

"It is fantastic to have Ben back, not just playing and playing back somewhere near his best -- it has been coming a long time. &nbsp;

"The way he stepped up in big moments in that World Cup was just him down to a tee. It is what he does -- he responds well to responsibility and to the big moments.

"He offers with all three departments -- he bowls, bats and he is one of the best fielders and he drags people with him as a natural leader on the field and in the dressing room."

Root praised Buttler but said Buttler was aware Stokes would be brought back as vice-captain when there was an opportunity to do so.

England's World Cup win under the leadership of one day specialist Eoin Morgan achieved a long held goal but Root rejected suggestions that meant the pressure to regain the Ashes had eased as a result.

- 'All-time high' -
"I think if you speak to anyone who has captained England and is on the verge of an Ashes series, to say it doesn't mean as much as any other event, I don't think any of them would agree," he said.&nbsp;

"It's huge. It's a great opportunity. Cricket in this country is probably at an all time high, it's got interest it probably hasn't had for a long time and we've got an opportunity as a team to make this summer a very memorable one."

Root is going back up to number three in the batting order and Joe Denly dropping down to four as England look to shore up their struggling line up.

"I think it's important to spread the experience out and it gives me an opportunity to lead from the front as well," said Root, England's best batsman.

"I also feel I'm in a place where I've got my head around the captaincy and my batting and I'm able to separate the two."

World Cup winner <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-winner-jofra-archer-in-england-squad-for-ashes-opener-238826">Jofra Archer</a> will have to wait for his Test debut after the fast bowler was left out of England's team announced on Wednesday following his struggles with a side injury.

"Jofra is obviously coming back from a very serious injury," said Root. "We looked at conditions, what we thought was best... and it also allows him time to get absolutely ready and fit."

England captain Root glad to have Stokes as his Ashes deputy

Uncapped fast bowler Jofra Archer has been included in England's 14-man squad announced Saturday for next week's Ashes opener <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cameron-bancroft-joins-steve-smith-and-david-warner-in-australias-ashes-squad-238644">against Australia</a>, with all-rounder Ben Stokes re-appointed as vice-captain.

The pair both enjoyed starring roles in England's stunning World Cup final win over New Zealand at Lord's on July 14, with all-rounder Stokes ensuring England drew level with the Black Caps total in regulation play before Archer bowled the decisive Super Over that sealed victory.

Archer, 24, who only became England qualified earlier this year, could now make his Test debut when the first of a five-match series starts at Edgbaston on August 1.

He carried a side strain throughout the World Cup but reported fit after a brief holiday in his native Barbados, with Archer returning to action for Sussex on Friday, where he took 2-21 in a tied Twenty20 Blast match with Surrey.

Meanwhile Stokes was restored to his position as Joe Root's deputy after being stripped of the vice-captaincy following a late night brawl in September 2017. He was subsequently cleared on a charge of affray last year, with Jos Buttler acting as vice-captain.

Both Buttler and Stokes were rested from a see-saw Test against Ireland that England eventually won by 143 runs at Lord's on Friday, with veteran spearhead James Anderson also returning to the squad after missing the match with a side injury.

But while 10 of the 11 players who defeated Ireland were included, there was no place for left-arm spinner Jack Leach following his man-of-the-match heroics that saw the nightwatchman make a career-best 92 in England's second innings. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad finished the Ireland match in spectacular style, the seamers taking six for 17 and four for 19 respectively as the visitors collapsed to 38 all out.

Watch: Euphoric reactions of British grandma to England's historic World Cup triumph

British PM Theresa May hosts World Cup winning England cricket team

England fast bowler Jofra Archer said teammate Ben Stokes'&nbsp;advice helped him during the super over of the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-defeat-new-zealand-to-win-the-cricket-world-cup-2019-title-235973">ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final match</a> against New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday night.

As the 50-over match tied, England scored 15 runs in the super over. Archer managed to take his side over the line as England restricted New Zealand to 15 runs.

Since both the 50-overs match and super-over action ended up in a tie, England came out triumphant as they had scored more boundaries.

Stokes came up to him before he bowled the super over, and said the over will define him.

"Before we started Stokes came to me and said today is everything that will define you as a player. I guess as him being in a similar situation (World T20 2016 final) couple of years ago, he really wanted to come and tell me that. After that I don't think I was too nervous," Archer said.

During the World T20 2016 final between England and West Indies, Carlos Brathwaite hammered 24 runs off Stokes in the final over to win the tournament.

Archer, who was not named in the preliminary squad for the World Cup, came into the team just before the commencement of the tournament and went onto making it the most memorable World Cup for himself.

"It is mostly for the team than for me. I am probably the last person to come into this team. I was together for four years. I think this will help me be deeper into this team," he said.

World Cup final: Jofra Archer reveals Ben Stokes' pre-super over advice

World Cup final: Players to watch out for in England vs New Zealand clash

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah achieved another feat in the ongoing&nbsp;ICC World Cup 2019.

The 25-year-old has now bowled the most number of maiden overs in the tournament.&nbsp;

Bumrah took his tally of maiden overs to nine after no run was scored in his first over against New Zealand in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-semi-final-1st-india-vs-new-zealand-234231">semi-final</a> on Tuesday.

Bumrah along with the other Indian bowlers kept the Kiwi batsmen on the backfoot, not allowing them to score runs freely.&nbsp;

He brought the first breakthrough in the match for the Indian side when he <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/watch-virat-kohli-takes-stunning-catch-to-dismiss-new-zealands-martin-guptill-in-semi-final-234308">dismissed Martin Guptill</a> for one run in his second over.

The ball got a thick outside edge and Virat Kohli, fielding at second slip grabbed it diving to his left.&nbsp;This was Guptill's fifth single-digit score in this year's <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-old-trafford-becomes-no-fly-zone-for-india-vs-new-zealand-semi-final-clash-234279">World Cup</a>.

In the list of bowlers with most maiden overs, Bumrah is followed by England pacer Jofra Archer, who has bowled eight maidens so far.

Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah achieved another feat in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. The 25-year-old has now bowled the most number of maiden overs in the tournament. Bumrah took his tally of maiden overs to nine after no run was scored in his first over against New Zealand in the semi-final on Tuesday. Bumrah along with the other Indian bowlers kept the Kiwi batsmen on the backfoot, not allowing them to score runs freely. He brought the first breakthrough in the match for the Indian side when he dismissed Martin Guptill for one run in his second over. The ball got a thick outside edge and Virat Kohli, fielding at second slip grabbed it diving to his left. This was Guptill's fifth single-digit score in this year's World Cup. In the list of bowlers with most maiden overs, Bumrah is followed by England pacer Jofra Archer, who has bowled eight maidens so far. Archer will have the chance to match Bumrah in the second semi-final of the World Cup 2019 when England take on Australia at Birmingham on July 11. Cricket World Cup 2019: Young guns whose time will surely come

England opener Jason Roy is set to return from a torn hamstring in Sunday's crucial Cricket World Cup match against India, said captain Eoin Morgan who is optimistic quick Jofra Archer will continue to play through a side strain.

England need all hands on deck after back-to-back defeats complicated their semi-finals passage ahead of their last two group assignments against India and New Zealand -- teams they have not beaten in World Cup since 1992.

Roy smashed 153 against Bangladesh but has since sat out with the injury, while replacement James Vince managed 40 in three innings.

"Jason is preparing to play tomorrow," Morgan told reporters at Edgbaston on Saturday.

"Providing he gets through to today's practice and tomorrow morning unscathed, we think that he might be fit to play."

Roy has been crucial to England's rise to the top of one-day rankings and Morgan said he would risk playing the 28-year-old unless it meant long-term injury for the opener.

"Depending on the significance of the risk. If it was going to rule him out long term, absolutely not. If it was going to rule him out for a couple of weeks, yes," he said.

Archer did not bowl on Friday but rolled his arms on Saturday.

"We're going to see how he comes through today. It's the same thing he's been playing with the last three games. So we'll see how he comes through today," Morgan said.

Many saw the team under Morgan as the strongest England side in a World Cup but defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia have intensified pressure on the hosts.

Morgan admitted his team, who had made it a habit to post 300-plus score heading into the tournament, have struggled to adjust to pitches where teams have successfully defended sub-250 totals but refused to blame his team mates.

"I can't fault the commitment or application that the guys have produced in every single game," Morgan said.

"Where we've let ourselves down as a group is adapting to conditions. It's been a bigger challenge in this World Cup than previous bilateral series that we've played.&nbsp;

"So tomorrow's going to be the exact same. We're going to have to adapt to conditions, adapt to playing against a strong side in India."

World Cup: Eoin Morgan optimistic on Jason Roy and Jofra Archer against India

When Jofra Archer returned for his second spell and took two wickets in two balls to leave West Indies reeling on Friday, the collective sighs of regret from Caribbean fans inside Southampton's Rose Bowl were almost audible.

West Indies dangerman Nicholas Pooran was doing his best to see his side to a defendable total and had reached 63 when paceman Archer got a lifting 90mph delivery to brush the glove before being caught by Jos Buttler.

Next ball and Archer had Sheldon Cottrell plumb lbw for a duck and suddenly the Barbados-born 24-year-old was on a World Cup hat-trick, not even the most inventive scriptwriter would have dared to pen a few months back.

It did not happen as Oshane Thomas survived the last ball of the over but minutes later Archer removed Carlos Brathwaite to become the first English bowler to take three three-wicket hauls in World Cup history.

He had gone wicket-less in his opening five overs when West Indies opener Chris Gayle dished out some punishment to the young upstart with a flurry of boundaries.

But he ended with figures of three for 30 as West Indies were all out for 212, offering further proof if it were needed, that West Indies have allowed a genuine game-changer to slip through their grasp.

"He is a pleasure to captain. He loves the challenge and to overcome it," England captain Eoin Morgan said of Archer after his three-wicket burst on Friday.

In a parallel universe, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/eoin-morgan-knows-what-jofra-archers-feeling-ahead-of-clash-against-native-country-west-indies-227033">Archer would have walked out of the West Indies</a> dressing room on Friday wearing burgundy not light blue and would have had Morgan in his sights.

That he did not can be traced back to the day he was left out of the West Indies squad for 2014 Under 19 World Cup despite having already shone for the age-group side.

"At the beginning, he really, really wanted to play for the West Indies. After being disappointed, his heart's desire changed and it became just a matter of playing international cricket," former teammate Zachary McCaskie told The Times.

Impetuous perhaps, but Archer was a man in a hurry and he recognised that a move to England could help him to earn more money and provide the platform for his talents to shine.

After impressing with county side Sussex as a quick bowler and aggressive batsman, he was signed in 2018 by Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Rajasthan Royals for 800,000 pounds ($1.01 million).

There he was teammates with England all-rounder Ben Stokes and Buttler, although at the time his hopes of realising his ambition of playing for England seemed a long way off under the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) eligibility rules.

The door was still open to play for West Indies but for Archer, there was no going back and when, last November, the ECB reduced the residency rule from seven years to three, Archer suddenly came into contention for the World Cup.

Despite his inexperience at the international level, the clamour to include Archer in the squad grew louder day by day.

Once in, he has not disappointed which is probably no surprise at all to those who used to watch a teenaged Archer skittle opposition with his effortless pace and whack sixes into the cemetery bordering Bridgetown's Wildey Cricket Club.

It certainly has not surprised former coaches Corey Yearwood who recalls a "bony" 16-year-old Archer roughing up West Indies test player Shane Shillingford in a net session.

"Shane said to me afterwards,&nbsp;'It is unbelievable that his small frame could bowl that pace. This guy is going to play for the West Indies'," Yearwood told The Times.

Sadly for West Indies, whose World Cup hopes are hanging by a thread after Friday's thumping eight-wicket defeat, that never materialised. Instead, Archer has already taken nine wickets in the tournament for England -- one less than tournament leader Mohammad Amir of Pakistan.

Worryingly for England's future opponents, Archer appears to just be warming up.

World Cup: England's Jofra Archer reminds West Indies of what they let slip away

West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for showing dissent to an umpire's decision during the World Cup match against England, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Saturday.

Brathwaite showed his displeasure after he was adjudged caught behind off <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-englands-jofra-archer-reminds-west-indies-of-what-they-let-slip-away-227252">England fast bowler Jofra Archer</a> during the 44th over of the West Indies innings on Friday.

"Brathwaite admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by David Boon of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing," the ICC said in a statement.

Four demerit points within a two-year period incurs a ban from one test or two one-dayers or two T20Is, whatever comes first for the player.

West Indies were bowled out for 212 before<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-joe-root-is-englands-glue-says-captain-eoin-morgan-227247"> Joe Root's unbeaten century</a> ensured a comfortable eight-wicket victory for England in Southampton.

World Cup: West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite reprimanded for showing dissent

England captain Eoin Morgan knows better than most the emotions Jofra Archer will experience when the fast bowler plays against his native West Indies for the first time.

Dublin-born batsman Morgan, who switched allegiance from Ireland to England a decade ago, is set to lead the tournament hosts against the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-not-only-ms-dhonis-icc-rejected-chris-gayles-request-also-225711">Caribbean</a> side in a World Cup group match in Southampton on Friday.

Barring a late injury, Morgan's team will include Barbados-born quick Archer, who only qualified for England earlier this year but whose ability to bowl at speeds of up to 95 mph now makes him a central figure as they chase a first 50-over World Cup title.

Archer, whose father is English, could have been playing for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/trevor-bayliss-will-have-to-live-with-the-sheldon-salute-says-jason-holder-226942">West Indies</a> had he not been overlooked for the Under-19 World Cup four years ago.

That fateful decision was to spark a chain of events that saw Archer joining Sussex and then begin the process of qualifying to play international cricket for England.

Now he will be up against plenty of familiar faces in fellow Bajans such as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-15-south-africa-vs-west-indies-225918">West Indies</a> captain Jason Holder and Shai Hope, as well as former youth team-mates Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer.

Morgan, recalling his own first experience of playing against Ireland for England, said Thursday&nbsp;"I think it is a moment where you reaffirm your decision. The difference is the feel.''

"When you play against guys that you've played with at age-group level, it feels like a club game against your mates you've known for a long time, compared to playing against strangers. That's a different feel. Being in that position myself it does feel different. He won't know how it feels until he plays the game. If I feel the need (to speak to him) I will, but I haven't yet," Morgan said.

'Handle it'

Meanwhile, Morgan backed the 24-year-old Archer, who has taken nine wickets in six one-day internationals at a healthy average of 27, to cope with the inevitable scrutiny that will come his way on Friday.

"I'm sure he will handle it like he's handled everything else in the tournament so far," said his skipper.

"Every challenge he has come up against so far he has come out the other side really well. So let's just see how it goes, we are not expecting anything majorly different. Jofra is extremely interesting because everything he has been confronted with, particularly out on the field, he has overcome,'' Morgan said.

"He's still learning, he's a very young, he has a lot of talent, and that is great for us. It's great that he's in an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-england-beat-bangladesh-by-106-runs-225564">England </a>shirt now," added Morgan.

Eoin Morgan knows what Jofra Archer's feeling ahead of clash against native country West Indies

Jason Roy and Jofra Archer have each been fined 15 per cent of their match fees for incidents during <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-2019-england-skipper-eoin-morgan-says-fielding-let-team-down-in-loss-against-pakistan-224075">England's World Cup defeat by Pakistan</a> at Trent Bridge.

The International Cricket Council found opener Roy had breached level one of its code of conduct, using an audible obscenity after a misfield during Pakistan's innings.

Fast bowler Archer was found guilty of dissent towards an umpire's decision following a wide delivery.

Both players have also had one demerit point added to their records.

Pakistan captain <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/inept-to-inspiring-i-always-say-be-patient-with-us-says-captain-sarfaraz-after-beating-england-224025">Sarfaraz Ahmed</a> was fined 20 per cent of his fee, and his teammates 10 per cent, for a minor over-rate offence.

Pakistan won Monday's match by 14 runs after setting England a target of 349.

It was an occasionally fractious encounter, with the umpires warning England skipper Eoin Morgan about his side throwing the ball in on the bounce and later issuing the same reminder to Sarfaraz.

The tactic is often used to scuff up the ball and promote reverse swing.

Morgan said,&nbsp;"There were discussions throughout the whole of the two innings. The umpires came to me mid-innings and seemed to think that we were throwing the ball in on the bounce too much or it was being over-exaggerated.

England batsman Jos Buttler appeared to take a look at the ball on his walk back to the pavilion after his knock of 103 came to an end.

"They emphasised it would be the same for both. The conversations that were stopping the game were that Pakistan were&nbsp;doing the same thing,'' Morgan said.

"Jos was just intrigued to see the ball. When the ball is hit against the LED boards it does scuff it up quite a lot so he was just interested to see if the ball was more scuffed up," the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-joe-root-scores-first-hundred-of-cricket-world-cup-2019-223998">England </a>captain added.

England's Jofra Archer, Jason Roy fined for breaching ICC code in World Cup defeat against Pakistan

The addition of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/search?q=jofra+archer">Jofra Archer</a> in the side allows England to pick up wickets at any stage of an innings during the World Cup, former captain Kevin Pietersen has said.

Archer's World Cup debut, where he picked up three wickets in England's 104-run victory over South Africa, was among the early tournament highlights after he was fast-tracked into the hosts' one-day international setup.

The Barbados-born quick is now expected to lead the pace attack with Mark Wood when they take on Pakistan in their second match later on Monday.

"The addition of Jofra Archer to that setup gives England the capabilities to take wickets from overs one to 50," Pietersen told Sky Sports.

"Occasionally they might get a couple of wickets with the new ball and then try and back (leg-spinner Adil) Rashid to get wickets. If Rashid doesn't get any wickets in the middle overs then they struggle.

"Archer can knock over the top order of every single team. He can then come in the middle of the innings and get a couple of wickets from short-pitched deliveries and then at the death he is a fantastic bowler."

Archer impressed Pietersen during the Big Bash Twenty20 league in Australia where he picked up 35 wickets in 28 games for Hobart Hurricanes.

The 24-year-old is yet to make his test debut and Pietersen backed him to make England's squad to team up with veteran fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad when they take on Australia in the Ashes series, which begins in August.

"Having faced him, having played with him in Australia in the Big Bash, he is something to be looked after just because of the pace and bounce," Pietersen added. "He has the ability to take wickets all the way throughout the innings.

"He is a special, special talent. I'm telling you now it should be an Anderson, Broad and Jofra Archer combination come the first test matches of the Ashes."

Jofra Archer can take wickets at any stage of match: Kevin Pietersen

Patience is a virtue, so the saying goes. The men who matter in the realm of English cricket were patient with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/england-vs-south-africa-from-stunning-stokes-to-electric-archer-major-takeaways-from-world-cup-opener-222985#electric-archer-makes-his-mark-222974">Jofra Archer</a>, waiting for him to qualify to represent England after his success for Sussex and several T20 franchises apart from the Under-19 level for Barbados and West Indies.

As soon as the Barbados-born allrounder qualified to play for England this year, he was fast-tracked into the limited-overs squad. Next, into the World Cup squad. On Thursday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-beat-south-africa-by-104-runs-in-cricket-world-cup-opener-222946">Archer made his World Cup debut</a> against South Africa at The Oval and, in his fourth match for England, struck three massive blows for the hosts as they steamrolled their opponents by 104 runs.

Promoted to new-ball duties alongside Chris Woakes, the 22-year-old began with a spell of 2/20 in five overs and later returned to get rid of Rassie van der Dussen for 50. He finished with figures of 7-1-27-3 to go with an unbeaten seven off three balls earlier in the afternoon.

Those figures, as good as they look, do not tell you about the intensity, accuracy and aggression with which Archer bowled in front of a near full house at The Oval. For starters, there was the bouncer that sent Hashim Amla off the field. The veteran South Africa batsman was beaten for pace and took a blow on the helmet, then received on-field treatment before leaving the field.

Archer kept bowling fast, and found his first wicket when Aiden Markram poked an edge to Joe Root at slip. The key here was a bit of bounce and extra pace. Archer jumped and punched the air as his team-mates ran towards him. In the stands, a sea of England fans were on their feet. A few beer-swigging men in the stands behind third man shadowed Root’s catch at slip with animation.&nbsp;

In his next over, Archer suckered South Africa captain Faf du Plessis into a pull. The ball was banged in, du Plessis chased it. But it had too much pace on it and he ended up top-edging it to Moeen Ali at fine leg. This time Archer stood his ground, pumped his fists and roared. You knew how much that wicket meant to him.

In the span of six balls, he had changed the tone of South Africa’s chase. Truly, moments like these are match-winning. They thrill the senses, lift a team’s mood. And they often come from players who, like Archer, have a certain je ne sais quoi about him.

Archer came back to bowl the 32nd over and struck with his fifth delivery, this time getting the well-settled van der Dussen to mistime a shot to mid-on. Yet again, Archer’s pace and a bit of bounce undid a South African batsman.

This is what England picked him for. This is what the fans expect of him. This is what could prove defining in England’s World Cup campaign. They are not ranked No 1 without reason, and now with Archer they appear an even stronger force.

The buzz about Archer – described by Ben Stokes as the most “naturally-gifted” bowler he has seen – was palpable, and after he returned from the IPL with 11 wickets, three catches and a couple vital cameos for Rajasthan Royals the cries for him to be included in England’s World Cup squad grew louder.

Andrew Flintoff urged the selector to drop “anyone” to get Archer in. Michael Vaughan vowed to take off his clothes if Archer wasn’t picked. In his second ODI last month, Archer conceded just six runs in four overs in a wicket-taking spell before rain washed out the game. The chants grew louder.

But Archer’s arrival into the England squad was not without criticism. Woakes, the man with whom Archer opened the bowling at The Oval, said that his selection so close to the World Cup would be “morally unfair”. &nbsp;David Willey questioned the logic of fast-tracking Archer into England’s ODI team. As it turned out, Willey was the man to make way for Archer in England’s World Cup squad, a decision which Eoin Morgan termed the toughest he’s been a part of as England skipper.

Tough, said Morgan, but the right call.

Thursday’s World Cup opener was a big statement from Archer, a cool-headed young player not overawed by the occasion. The patience is paying off for England, and Archer is justifying the hype.&nbsp;

Patience is a virtue, so the saying goes. The men who matter in the realm of English cricket were patient with Jofra Archer, waiting for him to qualify to represent England after his success for Sussex and several T20 franchises apart from the Under-19 level for Barbados and West Indies.

Patience is a virtue, so the saying goes. The men who matter in the realm of English cricket were patient with Jofra Archer, waiting for him to qualify to represent England after his success for Sussex and several T20 franchises apart from the Under-19 level for Barbados and West Indies. As soon as the Barbados-born allrounder qualified to play for England this year, he was fast-tracked into the limited-overs squad. Next, into the World Cup squad. On Thursday, Archer made his World Cup debut against South Africa at The Oval and, in his fourth match for England, struck three massive blows for the hosts as they steamrolled their opponents by 104 runs. Archer kept bowling fast, and found his first wicket when Aiden Markram poked an edge to Joe Root at slip. The key here was a bit of bounce and extra pace. Archer jumped and punched the air as his team-mates ran towards him. In the stands, a sea of England fans were on their feet. A few beer-swigging men in the stands behind third man shadowed Root’s catch at slip with animation. In his next over, Archer suckered South Africa captain Faf du Plessis into a pull. Cricket World Cup 2019: Jofra Archer's impact makes England an even tougher force

England vs South Africa: From stunning Stokes to electric Archer, major takeaways from World Cup opener

Eoin Morgan-led England defeated South Africa by 104 runs in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-1-england-vs-south-africa-222728">inaugural match of the Cricket World Cup 2019</a> on Thursday at the Oval stadium.&nbsp;

Chasing 312 runs to win, South Africa were all out for 207 in 39.5 overs.&nbsp;

South Africa's top batting order collapsed despite opener Quinton de Kock, who scored 68 runs before losing his wicket to Liam Plunkett.&nbsp;

Rassie van der Dussen also played a decent knock but could not inspire the team towards victory.&nbsp;

South Africa also suffered a huge scare as Hasim Amla retired hurt after being hit by a Jofra Archer bouncer but later came to bat again and eventually lost his wicket to Plunkett after scoring 13 runs.&nbsp;

Earlier, Ben Stokes top-scored with 89 as England posted a solid but not commanding total of 311 for eight.&nbsp;

Jason Roy, Joe Root and Eoin Morgan also passed fifty in favourable batting conditions, but England were never able to break free from the shackles imposed by a disciplined South African attack.

After being put in to bat, the tournament favourites lost Jonny Bairstow to the second ball of the innings, caught by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off spinner Imran Tahir, but Roy and Root shared a 106-run partnership to steady the hosts.

Roy never threatened to dismantle the bowling as he has done regularly in recent matches, accumulating 54 runs before he skied Andile Phehlukwayo to Faf du Plessis at mid-off.

Three balls later Root departed for 51, playing a loose drive at Kagiso Rabada to give JP Duminy a simple catch at backward point and leave England on 111 for three.

South Africa continued to bowl tightly as Morgan and Stokes set about rebuilding the innings.

Morgan struck the first six in the 26th over and the captain cleared the ropes twice more in a fourth-wicket partnership of 106.

Morgan, on 57, was brilliantly caught off Tahir by Aiden Markram at long-on, the fielder diving forward to catch the ball inches from the turf, and England failed to cut free.

Jos Buttler made a scratchy 18, Moeen Ali three before he too fell to a superb catch on the boundary by Du Plessis and Chris Woakes 13 as the last 10 overs produced 76 runs to leave the match finely poised at the half-way stage.
