This marks Root&rsquo;s first 50-over appearance since England&rsquo;s 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign, where he last played against Pakistan at Eden Gardens.
Root, who was not part of England&rsquo;s T20I squad, re-enters the side as England aim to reinforce its middle order ahead of the ICC <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/champions-trophy">Champions Trophy</a> 2025. His experience and ability to play spin could be crucial in Indian conditions.
England&rsquo;s white-ball tour of India has been challenging, with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/jos-buttler">Jos Buttler</a>&rsquo;s men suffering a 1-4 defeat in the T20I series. The loss marked a tough start for head coach Brendon McCullum, who recently took charge of England&rsquo;s limited-overs squad.

Root joins the ODI setup fresh from an impressive stint in South Africa&rsquo;s SA20 league, where he scored 279 runs at an average of 55 and a strike rate of 140 for Paarl Royals. His performances included two half-centuries, with a highest score of 92, highlighting his form and adaptability. In addition to his batting, Root also contributed five wickets with his off-spin, adding a useful option to England&rsquo;s attack against India&rsquo;s strong batting lineup.
<h2>'Great to be back with the squad'</h2>
Expressing his excitement about returning to ODI cricket, Root said in a video posted by England Cricket. "It&rsquo;s great to be back with the squad after a while. Playing alongside some familiar faces and young talents makes it even more exciting. I&rsquo;m looking forward to contributing, especially in these conditions.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Being the senior batter, I have a role to play in guiding the team and helping the younger guys grow. This squad has immense talent, and I&rsquo;m eager to be part of this journey.&rdquo;
England has named an XI that blends youth with experience, with Root slotting in at No. 3. Ben Duckett and Phil Salt will open the innings, while the team also sees the return of Jofra Archer in the bowling attack.

IND vs ENG 1st ODI: Joe Root returns to England squad for series opener

The IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled to get underway in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is a two-day affair (November 24 and 25). IPL announced the final list of players (574) slated to go under the hammer, including 366 Indians and 208 overseas, with the notable absentees being England ace seamer Jofra Archer and Australia all-rounder Cameron Green; however, retired Test great James Anderson is registered in the INR 1.25 crore-bracket.

While Archer last played in IPL 2020 for Rajasthan Royals (RR), Green was part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squad last season, traded from Mumbai Indians for INR 17,50,00,000 ahead of the December auction. That move, however, led to Hardik Pandya returning to Mumbai (from Gujarat Titans), replacing Rohit Sharma as their new captain.

The lanky Australian was one of Mumbai’s prolific run-scorers in his maiden season, hitting 452 in 16 contested matches, including his best score of 100* against SunRisers Hyderabad. Next season for the RCB, his form dipped, scoring a mere 255 runs from 13 outings, with his best being 46.

Meanwhile, ahead of the Australian summer this year, Green underwent surgery on the lower spine, missing all action, including the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India. Though he was scheduled to return in time for the Champions Trophy in February-March next year, the IPL decided against putting his name in the final list, among which all ten teams will pick the players.

On the other hand, Anderson, who announced his international retirement following the first Test against West Indies at the Lord’s this year, is among the 208 foreign players listed for the IPL auction. Having last played an international T20I 15 years ago in 2009, Anderson registered his name for an IPL auction for the first time since the tournament’s inception.&nbsp;

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: No Jofra Archer, Cameron Green but James Anderson gets green light

Australia rode on Travis Head's 154 not out to beat England by seven wickets in pursuit of 316 in the first ODI, at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, of the five-match series on Thursday (Sep 19). Head was at his aggressive best from the word go, despite losing opener Mitchell Marsh (10) soon, as he stitched fifty-run stands with Steve Smith and Cameron Green, with both making 32 apiece, before putting on an unbeaten 148-run stand with Marnus Labuschagne (77 not out) to take Australia to a comprehensive win. With this, the visitors also took a 1-0 lead.&nbsp;

During his inning, laced with&nbsp;with 20 fours and 5 sixes&nbsp;at a strike rate of 119.38, Head smacked pacer Jofra Archer for a huge six courtesy of a nonchalant flick over midwicket region. This happened on the first ball of the seventh over.&nbsp;Here is the video:&nbsp;

Eng vs Aus: Travis Head nonchalantly flicks pacer Jofra Archer for HUGE six in 1st ODI - Watch

England will continue to manage workload of speedster Jofra Archer to protect him from getting injured again and again. Archer was the hero of England's ODI World Cup 2019 victory but has been on the sidelines for majority of the time every since.

He now has been included in England's 15-man squad for the upcoming five-ODI series against Australia at home but will be used strategically.

"Jofra will have to be managed throughout the series," England's designated ODI skipper Jos Buttler told Sky Sports on Sunday (Sep 15).&nbsp;

"He's played a really good stint now of T20 cricket, but obviously you can only bowl four overs in there. There's a jump in intensity getting loads up to taking full part in an ODI - and of course, as an England fan, to push those loads up hopefully to get back into the Test arena as well," Buttler added.

Archer has been eased back into&nbsp;international cricket very meticulously with his first international games after a long injury layoff being two T20Is against Pakistan in May earlier this year.

He then played all the games for his side in the T20 World Cup 2024 but has been put on workload management since then and hasn't fully participated for Surrey in the Vitality Blast. He also played selectively in The Hundred before playing the first T20I against Australia earlier this month.

England's interim coach Marcus Trescothick also echoed the same thoughts as Buttler and said: "He knows the plan. It's discussed long in advance of picking the team on each day. We know what we're doing with him, and where we're going. He's comfortable: he knows what he's doing."

England will hope for Archer to stay fit for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy early next year and the away Ashes in November 2025.

England hammered Oman by eight wickets as the reigning champions revived their T20 World Cup campaign with a record-breaking win in Antigua on Thursday.

Needing a heavy victory to bolster their net run-rate as they attempt to overhaul Scotland in the race to qualify for the second round, England dismissed Oman for just 47.

England then made 50-2 in&nbsp;mere 3.1 overs, with captain Jos Buttler 24 not out and Jonny Bairstow, who hit the winning boundary, unbeaten on eight.

This overwhelming Group B victory meant England recorded the largest win in T20 World Cup history in terms of balls remaining.

Oman had no answer to England's attack, leg-spinner Adil Rashid taking 4-11, while express quicks Jofra Archer and Mark Wood both had figures of 3-12 in an innings that ended with nearly seven overs to spare.

Number seven Shoaib Khan (11) was the only Oman batsman to reach double figures after Buttler won the toss.

England's net run rate climbed to 3.081, better than Scotland's 2.16, although they stay&nbsp;third on the points table with three points, behind the Scots' five.

Amid speculation that arch-rivals Australia, undefeated so far in Group B, might ease up in their closing pool game against Scotland to engineer England's exit, Buttler's men now know they will go second if they beat Namibia in their pool finale on Saturday.

Even a win, however, would leave England awaiting the outcome of Sunday's match between Australia and Scotland to discover if they have reached the Super Eights.

<h2>- 'Job done' -</h2>

"I thought the tone was set really well by the bowlers, picking up the early wickets," said Buttler as England returned to winning ways after a comprehensive 36-run loss to Australia last time out that followed a washout with Scotland.&nbsp;

"Job done today, another big game in two days' time."

The defeat by Australia added to the pressure on Buttler and coach Matthew Mott, himself a native Australian, that had been growing since late last year when England lost six of their nine games during a woeful defence of their 50-over World Cup title in India.

"I've been around long enough to know how things work," said Buttler. "We have confidence. We can only focus on ourselves, we've got a huge game against Namibia."

Already-eliminated Oman, who ended the tournament having lost all four of their games, just scraped past the record lowest completed total of 39 at any T20 World Cup, posted by fellow-non-Test nation Uganda against co-hosts West Indies in Guyana last week.

"We couldn't do well in the batting, it was a big collapse," said Oman captain Aqib Ilyas. “Overall, we couldn't do much. There are still many positives and you just have to get better and better. Once in a year you play against bowlers doing 150 kph (93 mph) plus."

Archer did the early damage with 2-12 in nine balls.

Oman then lost two wickets in Wood's first over as they slumped to 25-4 in six overs.

On the very next delivery, wicketkeeper Buttler luckily removed the bails at the second attempt to stump Khalid Kail off Rashid's first ball as the wickets continued to tumble.

Phil Salt struck the first two balls of England's chase for six, only to be bowled off the third by Bilal Khan, but his side was on its way to victory by then.

England smash Oman in record-breaking chase to reignite T20 World Cup campaign

Ashes arrived early, this time at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas, as Australia and England gear up for the marquee clash in Barbados on Saturday (June 8). Veteran Aussie batter David Warner is aware of the threat the defending champions pose, with their pacey duo of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood set to headline this Group B tie; however, upon asking how he plans to tackle them, Warner said he just needs to put bat to ball.

Australia and England will face off for the first time since last year’s Ashes in the UK, with Archer returning to the big stage after a long gap. Wood’s presence in the XI will boost England’s chances against their old foes, but Warner feels that in relatively foreign conditions, where the balls won’t come as quickly as expected, the Aussies can take on this challenge up front.

"You just have to use their pace," Warner said of facing Archer and Wood.&nbsp;

"Test cricket they set different fields, different balls. In Twenty20 cricket, you only have to get half an edge on it, and it can go. So there's a fair difference."

"I've played a lot of cricket over here. You are expecting it to be low rather than bounce unless it is real short. The variation in bounce is what surprises you. Because when they pitch the ball that eight-metre [from the stumps] length, your natural instinct is to pull it. But you have to go back to targeting straight, backing yourself, and if it does bounce, so be it,” the opener continued.&nbsp;

<h2>Warner answers critics</h2>

Warner faced flak for his lean patch during the IPL 2024 but says it doesn’t affect him anymore, adding he fails to understand why there is talk about just one player when cricket is a team sport, with 11 players completing a team.&nbsp;

"It [the criticism] doesn't fuel me. It's in one ear, out the other," Warner said.&nbsp;

"I don't understand why it's all about myself. There are 11 players in the team. I don't get it. People feel like they have to keep criticising the way I play. I don't know what it is. I have no answer as to why people write that. I have had it my whole career. I don't listen to it,” he concluded.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Warner scored a fifty against Oman in the side’s tournament opener.&nbsp;

ALSO READ: T20 World Cup: Babar Azam rues collective failure for Pakistan's shocking loss to USA "You just have to use their pace," Warner said of facing Archer and Wood. "Test cricket they set different fields, different balls. In Twenty20 cricket, you only have to get half an edge on it, and it can go. So there's a fair difference." "I've played a lot of cricket over here. You are expecting it to be low rather than bounce unless it is real short. The variation in bounce is what surprises you. Because when they pitch the ball that eight-metre [from the stumps] length, your natural instinct is to pull it. But you have to go back to targeting straight, backing yourself, and if it does bounce, so be it,” the opener continued. Warner answers critics Warner faced flak for his lean patch during the IPL 2024 but says it doesn’t affect him anymore, adding he fails to understand why there is talk about just one player when cricket is a team sport, with 11 players completing a team. "It [the criticism] doesn't fuel me. It's in one ear, out the other," Warner said. "I don't understand why it's all about myself. There are 11 players in the team. I don't get it. People feel like they have to keep criticising the way I play. I don't know what it is. I have no answer as to why people write that. I have had it my whole career. I don't listen to it,” he concluded. Meanwhile, Warner scored a fifty against Oman in the side’s tournament opener. (With inputs from agencies)

England T20I captain Jos Buttler backs his teammate Jonny Bairstow to come good in his new role as defending champions readies for the title defence in the Americas. With Phil Salt slated to open and Will Jacks to bat one down at number three, Bairstow will play at number four in the middle order, which he calls as ‘promotion.’ Speaking at a media event on Saturday (June 1), Buttler backed the right-hander to use his experience and deliver for his team.

Speaking on Bairstow’s new role in this campaign, Buttler said Jonny had done this before, and given what he brings to the table with his attacking stroke play, Bairstow will be their best bet at that position.

“I think for every player in the team, it's about trying to read the situation of the game and play accordingly,” Buttler said at a presser.&nbsp;

“I think Jonny's got the experience and the game to play that role for us at No. 4.”

“It's something he's done quite a bit in the T20 side previously as well, and he's got great variety in his game. So, he is used to batting in the powerplay should that situation arrive at No. 4, but he has also got experience and power and is a good player of spin throughout the middle phase as well,” the England captain noted.

An opener otherwise, Jonny played at number four in the recently-concluded four-match T20Is against Pakistan at home, scoring 49 runs in two outings. Before this preparatory series for the T20 World Cup, Bairstow spent a good five months in India since October last year.

He participated in the 2023 World Cup and then played the five-match Tests in January-March before plying his trade for Punjab Kings in IPL 2024 – where, while opening, he scored a hundred and helped his team chase the biggest total in T20 cricket (against KKR at the Eden Gardens).&nbsp;

Despite so much cricket, Bairstow is excited about this tournament and remains in a happier space, per his captain.

"I think he's excited. I think he's in a good space," Buttler said. "He's been away for a long time, but he is a very proud guy, and he has been playing a lot of cricket for England over that period of time, which is where he wants to be.

"So, he seems in a good space. His family is going to be with him on this trip as well, which is nice. And I think getting that injury just before the last T20 World Cup, I'm sure he's really excited for this one,” Buttler concluded.

ENG vs PAK, 2nd T20I: Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler star as England beat Pakistan in T20 World Cup build-up

England are eager to unleash Jofra Archer's "fear factor" against Pakistan as the paceman prepares to return from a long injury lay-off ahead of next month's T20 World Cup, says team-mate Sam Curran.

Injuries have blighted Archer's international career and he has not played top-level cricket for 14 months due to back and elbow issues.

He has managed just 15 Twenty20 appearances for England since making his international debut five years ago but is in the squad for their four-match T20 series against Pakistan, starting this week, and the World Cup.

T20 World Cup 2024: England look for form ahead of tournament as Jofra Archer returns in series vs Pakistan

England 2019 World Cup hero Jofra Archer is all set to&nbsp;return to the England national side as he tries to prove his fitness for the upcoming Pakistan series in May. Archer, who has been struggling with injury issues in recent times last played for England in March 2023 during the Bangladesh tour and has since then been missing in action. With the T20 World Cup taking place in the United States and the West Indies, Archer will be eager to board the England team&nbsp;flight.

<h2>Archer in contention for T20 World Cup</h2>

"Absolutely," Rob Key told Sky Sports News when asked if Archer is a consideration for the World Cup squad. "Jofra, he's been out on Sussex's pre-season out in India. He bowled quickly out there, he bowled really well."

Rob Key, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Director is optimistic about the inclusion of the pacer who helped England win the ODI World Cup in 2019. It is reported that Archer is in the Caribbean islands and is working hard with his fitness. His availability will depend on the progress he has made during the next few days.

"He's now just gone back in the Caribbean, where he is going to play a little bit of club cricket, stuff like that - all about getting himself ready for that World T20. He'll play hopefully the Pakistan series. But it's always fingers crossed at the moment with Jofra,” Key added.

<h2>England’s T20 World Cup journey</h2>

England are the defending champions of the T20 World Cup and were handed a huge setback earlier in the week when Ben Stokes pulled out of the tournament. He played an eccentric part in England winning the T20 World Cup having scored unbeaten 52 and leading the English side home. If Archer is passed fit, it will be a huge boost for England’s chances considering the absence of Stokes.

It is also worth noting, that England management has already cleared that Archer won’t be considered for the Test format until 2025. England begin their T20 World Cup quest against neighbours Scotland, while they also face Ashes rivals Australia on June 8 in Barbados.

England pacer Jofra Archer plays for Karnataka, takes wicket of English county teammate - WATCH

England fast bowler Jofra Archer recently caught the England Cricket Board (ECB) with a surprise by featuring for his school team in Barbados without informing the management. The pacer, who has been dealing with injuries for quite some time now, is believed to have returned to the United Kingdom as of now.&nbsp;

The news was first reported by&nbsp;ESPNCricinfo, which is how England team managing director Rob Key came to know of Archer's adventure.

"I'm not aware of that," Key said, when informed about Archer's involvement with his school team. "I'll find out," Key added while announcing the England Test squad for the India tour for which Archer has not been considered.

Notably, Archer has been handed a central contract by the ECB despite playing just seven white-ball matches since March 2021. The contract, apart from a show of faith, is also to take over Archer's recovery program in order to bring him back.

"Now we're taking control of him coming back. We're not going to say you need to get back for this part here. From what they've said, an elbow injury is a complicated place to have an injury. So we just want to take this as slow as possible," said Key.

The 28-year-old was expected to be a part of the recently concluded ODI World Cup but failed to recover in time. He had played a pivotal role in England's triumphant campaign in the 2019 edition and now is expected to return for the defence of the T20 title in the ICC T20 World Cup in June next year.

Considering his ability to win matches and the injury, Archer has been withdrawn from the IPL 2023 auction as well. Key, while talking about Archer's importance for England, said: "If it takes an extra couple of months, but he gets another couple of years out of his career, and gets back fully... I think he's worth his weight in gold."

England are currently in the West Indies where they will face the two-time T20 world champion side in a five-match T20I series as the focus shifts to the shortest format.

Of the 1,166 players, 830 are Indians, 336 are overseas, and 45 are from the associate nations. The list also included 212 capped and 909 uncapped players.&nbsp;

Among the 830 Indian cricketers, 18 are capped, including Varun Aaron, KS Bharat, Kedar Jadhav, Siddarth Kaul, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shivam Mavi, Shahbaz Nadeem, Karun Nair, Manish Pandey, Harshal Patel, Chetan Sakariya, Mandeep Singh, Barinder Sran, Shardul Thakur, Jaydev Unadkat, Hanuma Vihari, Sandeep Warrier and Umesh Yadav.&nbsp;

Upon requesting the board for names, those players will automatically be included in the auction if they are eligible and interested.&nbsp;

Considering only 77 spots are to be filed, with a maximum of 30 overseas players, the BCCI has instructed all franchises to issue the list of players they are keen on signing.

Although the deadline date for released and retained players was November 19, all teams can complete the trade by December 12 - one week before the 2024 IPL mini-auction.&nbsp;

Mitchell Starc, Travis Head among top names registered for 2024 IPL auction, England's Archer opts out

The five-time IPL winners, Mumbai Indians, have decided to release star foreign players – Cameron Green and Jofra Archer ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction to manage funds following Hardik Pandya’s shock trade from Gujarat Titans. Mumbai Indians have a limited purse heading into the auction, and to add more money to their kitty with an extra INR 5 crores from last season, they plan to let go of two massive match winners.

Australian Cameron Green entered his maiden IPL auction last year with a base price of INR 2 crores. Mumbai Indians chased him till the end, succeeding in bagging his services for a whopping INR 17.5 crores – making him the most expensive Australian and the second most expensive purchase in IPL auction history.&nbsp;

In his debut season, despite batting at several positions throughout the tournament, Green made a name for himself, smashing 452 runs in 16 matches, including a hundred in the team’s final league match against the SunRisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede. That ton also helped MI win the match and qualify for the playoffs. However, Green averaged slightly above 50 (50.22), striking at 160.28.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai-based outfit had bought the World Cup winner with England, Jofra Archer, for INR 8 crores in the last mega auction in 2021. Though the seamer missed the first season with an injury, he appeared in just five matches the next time, picking two wickets at a biting average of 95 and economy of near 9.5.&nbsp;

With Archer out with a stressed fracture in his right elbow, Mumbai Indians decided to part ways and look out for better injury-free prospects at the IPL 2024 mini-auction. The MI side has also traded West Indies all-rounder Romario Shepherd from the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for his base price of INR 50 lakh.

<h2>Pandya’s shock trade from GT to MI</h2>

Although several rumours were doing rounds on Hardik Pandya wanting to rejoin his former franchise, Mumbai Indians, the confirmation came Friday night, surprising the cricket world all over.&nbsp;

Hardik – Gujarat Titans captain, who led his team to two back-to-back IPL finals, winning the 2022 season, parted ways with them. Though reports suggest the trade between the two teams involved is an all-cash deal, the final details are submitted to the BCCI.&nbsp;

However, the deadline date for all teams to submit their final list of retained and released is Sunday (Nov 26).&nbsp;

IPL 2024 Auction: Mumbai Indians to release Green, Archer for Pandya’s potential switch – Reports

England Cricket Board (ECB) made a statement selection on Sunday (Nov 12) for the team’s upcoming tour of the West Indies with only six World Cup stars retaining their places. England, all set to play five T20Is and three ODIs, will be without Dawid Malan and Jofra Archer, with the former dropped for shambolic performance&nbsp;in the ODI World Cup and the latter missing out due to injury. The news comes a day after England’s ODI World Cup campaign came to an end after just three wins in nine matches.

<h2>Malan dropped, Archer misses out</h2>

Having scored 404 runs, Malan was overlooked considering his age as a big factor in the time to come. He scored a hundred against Bangladesh and 87 against the Netherlands but was far from convincing as England struggled for the majority of the tournament. While he was dropped, Archer remained on the sidelines due to his consistent injury issues. This time he missed out due to an elbow issue which saw him return home during the ODI World Cup despite not being the 15-member squad.

"Originally, the thought was that he was going to be alright for the back end of the competition," Rob Key, England's managing director, said on Sunday after England's league-stage elimination was confirmed.

"It was a risk worth taking. He had his scans, and they all came up clear. He flies over here, comes out to Mumbai, bowls, and actually then he felt pain in his elbow. So then, the view was, 'Right, this is going to be a risk too far'. Because of the upside, that's what lures you in. You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup… Jofra adds so much to that,” the director added.

England will play a three-match ODI series that kickstarts on Sunday (Dec 3) before the five-match T20I series takes centrestage from Dec 12. Interestingly, only six England ODI World Cup names have been retained in the form of captain Jos Buttler who remains in charge and is joined by Gus Atkinson, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone.

Three uncapped players make the cut in the ODI side with Test vice-captain Ollie Pope joining seamers John Turner and Josh Tongue. The pace pair also feature in the 20-over squad.

England tour of WI: Dawid Malan dropped after World Cup lame show, Jofra Archer misses out through injury

Reece Topley has a suspected broken finger, ruling him out of the remainder of the World Cup 2023. Topley suffered another injury blow during the game against South Africa in Mumbai, having recovered from the shoulder injury before the start of the tournament. With him injured now, England will look to replace him, but it cannot be Jofra Archer, who is already in India as part of the travelling reserves as he continues to recover from an elbow stress fracture.

Topley has been England’s best bowler in this World Cup. After picking four wickets against Bangladesh in his side’s only win thus far, the lanky left-arm seamer picked three against the Proteas (two with a broken finger) but didn’t come out to bat in the innings. Topley accounted for dangerous Quinton de Kock, captain Aiden Markram and David Miller.

On the last ball of his fourth over, Topley tried stopping a fierce drive by Rassie van der Dussan, only for it to hit the tip of his left index finger and injure it. Topley left the field immediately and Joe Root completed his over. Upon getting treated, the seamer returned and removed two batters but leaked runs at the end, as South Africa smashed the highest ODI score against England (399 for seven).

Matthew Mott, England’s coach, acknowledged the heart and spirit shown by Topley, saying,&nbsp;"I thought Reece Topley going back out to bowl with a broken finger showed great spirit. We're still waiting on that, but it's very much looking like it's a crack. Certainly, that's the early diagnosis, but we'll find out properly with X-rays,” Mott told Sky Sports after the game that England lost by 229 runs.

<h2>Who will replace Topley?</h2>

Although an official confirmation on Topley is not out yet, with England awaiting the results of the scans, the question arises who will replace him in the squad?

Commenting on why Jofra cannot be considered for selection despite training with the team, Mott said,&nbsp;"Jof (Jofra) is actually not going to be considered for selection," Mott confirmed. "He's come out, he's reported to the medical staff, but he's not going to be able to play a part in the end of this campaign."

While there is no stipulation as to having a like-to-like replacement for an injured player in the squad, right-arm seamer Brydon Carse is expected to be called up when a decision on Topley comes out.

A loss at the hands of South Africa will hurt England as their chances of sealing the semis spot have further reduced. For them to fight for a place in the final four, England must win their remaining five matches, two of which are against India and Australia.

Reece Topley likely to miss rest of World Cup with broken finger; Jofra Archer to NOT join in as replacement

In an effort to eliminate the possibility of franchise teams acquiring England's top cricketers, the England Cricket Board (ECB) has proposed special three-year contracts, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

The contracts are an update to the previous central contract structure, which only included one-year contracts, and they come at a time when Indian Premier League (IPL) ownership has expanded to other T20 tournaments around the world, allowing clubs to hire players exclusively for their needs all year long.

As per ESPNcricinfo, 26 contracts have been offered. The 20 contracts out of 26 are multi-year, with a group of top players including Ben Stokes, Harry Brook and Mark Wood in receipt of three-year packages.

The star pacer Jofra Archer could be in line for a three-year deal.

"It's certainly not negative, it kind of gives you a bit of security,"&nbsp; Ben Duckett was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"The security of players wanting to keep playing for England is perfect. For me the main thing is walking out and representing my country, it's not really a contract but that's a bonus," he added.

England's players will now decide whether to accept the contracts. While the basic remuneration has been agreed upon, those offered multiple years may request 12-month deals to give themselves greater flexibility.

These contracts, which will come into effect from the start of October, represent a significant step forward for the ECB after a month of back and forth with the England team. There will inevitably be kinks to iron out and disgruntled players who have narrowly missed out on the initial batch. But by and large, the situation is regarded as more beneficial, particularly for those who go on to sign lengthier contracts.

ECB likely to bring in multi-year contracts for England players

Member of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad for England, pacer Jofra Archer will fly with the CWC’23-bound team to India as a travelling reserve, ECB men’s chief selector Luke Wright said on Monday. Archer, out of action since April&nbsp;earlier this year with an elbow injury, will continue his rehab in India. Archer was not named in the final 15 picked on Sunday, with opener Jason Roy also missing out due to back spasms, as England roped in young Harry Brook.

"Jofra Archer will be travelling with the squad to India. He is one of the reserves, but we also need to look after him, focus on his rehab," Wright said.

England picked three seam-bowling all-rounders in Chris Woakes, Sam Curran and David Willey alongside the express pace of Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson, while lanky Reece Topley will take the new ball. Two-time World Cup winner Adil Rashid retained his place as a lone specialist spinner in the 15-man squad.

Talking about Roy’s exclusion from the final 15, Wright said he fell on other sides of things as despite him being locked in as Jonny Bairstow’s opening partner for the CWC, Roy failed to make the cut because of injury issues.

"It's not a decision we've taken lightly. In the early squad, we had him down for opening the batting with Jonny Bairstow in the World Cup...but things happen in sport, injuries happen.

"Everyone was told 'look, this is the 15 we're looking to take to the World Cup', but unfortunately that's the ruthless side of sport isn't it? It's not the nice side of the sport that changes do have to be made," Wright said.

<h2>Root added to squad for 1st ODI vs Ireland</h2>

Meanwhile, veteran batter Joe Root has been added to England’s squad for the first ODI against Ireland starting Wednesday, September 20, in Leeds on request. Against New Zealand in the four-match ODIs, Root had a mediocre outing, scoring just 39 runs at 9.75.

England are fielding a second-string side for the three-match Ireland ODIs.

Member of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad for England, pacer Jofra Archer will fly with the CWC’23-bound team to India as a travelling reserve, ECB men’s chief selector Luke Wright said on Monday.

Member of the 2019 World Cup-winning squad for England, pacer Jofra Archer will fly with the CWC’23-bound team to India as a travelling reserve, ECB men’s chief selector Luke Wright said on Monday. Archer, out of action since April earlier this year with an elbow injury, will continue his rehab in India. England’s final World Cup 2023 squad – Jos Buttler (captain), Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, David Willey, Reece Topley, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson Root added to squad for 1st ODI vs Ireland Meanwhile, veteran batter Joe Root has been added to England’s squad for the first ODI against Ireland starting Wednesday, September 20, in Leeds on request. Against New Zealand in the four-match ODIs, Root had a mediocre outing, scoring just 39 runs at 9.75. England are fielding a second-string side for the three-match Ireland ODIs. Jofra Archer to fly to India for CWC as travelling reserve; Root added to squad for 1st ODI vs IRE on request

England’s David Willey is delighted to be back in the frame for the upcoming ODI World Cup as he looks for a shot at redemption. The left-arm pacer from Northampton was unfortunate to miss out on a spot in the 2019 ODI World Cup with Jofra Archer replacing him in the winning campaign. However, with Archer snubbed from the provisional squad Willey will hope to make the most of the opportunity.

<h2>Willey reflects back on 2019 snub</h2>

"I'd been a big part of that from 2015 through to that World Cup, so there were mixed emotions the day they won it," Willey said ahead of the third ODI against New Zealand.

"I was obviously delighted for the lads, but it hurt. I'd have probably given my left arm to be a part of that. I think anything that happens to me in cricket now is never going to be as bad as that. As my career in the game goes on, and whatever I do after, I think that's probably a difficult but great experience for me to have - hopefully, it can serve me well in other areas of my life."

Having been named in the provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup, he was forced to make way for the then-impressive Archer. The move by the England Cricket Board (ECB) proved to be a masterstroke as Archer helped them win their maiden ODI World Cup on home soil. He bowled the decisive Super Over against New Zealand where they got the better of the Kiwis on boundaries scored.

<h2>Willey’s fabulous 12 months</h2>

For Willey, it has been a superb 12 months as he regained his place in the side after the COVID-19 outbreak. England opted to make use of two squads after the pandemic, which paved the way for him to be part of the national team set-up. He was also part of the England squad that won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, despite not getting any playing time.

The 33-year-old, though, will not be hoping for a Deja vu as Archer is back in training while the final squad is to be announced before September 27. England start their World Cup campaign in a repeat of last edition’s final as they meet New Zealand in the curtain-raiser encounter on Thursday, October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

England's David Willey delighted to get back in frame for ODI WC spot: 'I thought my England career was done'

It could be the end of the road for England’s Jofra Archer with the national team after he was snubbed for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. The 15-member squad announced on Wednesday, August 16 did not have Archer’s name in it, indicating the end of the road for him at least temporarily with the national team. It is expected that England will name the same 15-member squad for the World Cup in India barring any last-minute injury changes. The squad saw the return of Ben Stokes, but there was no place for Archer.

<h2>End of the road for Archer?</h2>

"There has got to be a duty of care with Jof. We know how desperate we all are to have him - there's no doubt about that - but we've also got to get it right for him. He's been very unfortunate with these injuries.. regarding the World Cup, unfortunately, we're just running out of time,” England’s chief selector Luke Wright said after the squad announcement.

Archer has endured a tough last 24 months where he has been out of the national team set-up due to frequent injuries. England’s 2019 World Cup star has quickly gone under the radar with injuries that saw him miss the entire 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) while also missing a chunk in the 2023 edition&nbsp;for Mumbai Indians.

"He's not going to come round quite quick enough, especially for the first part of the World Cup. There is a duty of care with him. We have to make sure that long-term, we get it right because we see him as a huge asset for a long time. As much as the temptation is to try and rush him in and get him in for the start of this World Cup, unfortunately, we're just going to run out of time,” Archer added.

While it looks to be the end of the road for Archer, Test skipper Ben Stokes has returned&nbsp;from retirement to be part of the New Zealand series. It is most likely that he will be part of the World Cup squad, likely to be announced before September 5. Stokes has not featured for the England national team in the white-ball format since November 2022, when he led the nation to the T20 World Cup against Pakistan in the final at Melbourne.

ENG vs NZ ODI Series: Jofra Archer not in England's World Cup plans, suggests latest snub

England could be handed a major boost ahead of the ODI World Cup as star bowler Jofra Archer is “on course” for a return to the national side, according to his Sussex coach Paul Farbrace on Wednesday, July 26. Archer, pivotal in England’s 2019 World Cup triumph, has been out of the national set-up with several elbow operations and suffering a stress fracture of the back. However, according to the latest developments, he could be available for selection as the defending champions will head to India to defend their crown in October.

<h2>Archer to return?</h2>

"He is going well. I think he is on course for the World Cup, which is fantastic news,” Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace told the BBC.

Archer has been struggling with injuries in recent times and has spent more time on the treatment table than on the field. He was also ruled out of the entire Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2022 and played only five matches in the 2023 season. However, with nearly 10 weeks to go before the start of the World Cup in India, he will be a welcome addition to the side.

"He is going nicely," added Farbrace of the quickie who played the most recent of his 13 Tests in February 2021.

Archer last played for England in March during the Bangladesh tour in the limited-overs series while he has not played in the red-ball format since February 2021 against India in Ahmedabad. He has since been in and out of the side due to injury issues. However, he is now eyeing&nbsp;a place in the English team as they prepare to become just the third nation to defend the ODI World Cup after West Indies and Australia.

<h2>Archer’s dream 2019 World Cup</h2>

In the biggest moment of his cricketing career, Archer was tasked to lead England home in the Super Over of the ODI World Cup final in 2019. After the match ended in a tie, the Super Over finish saw Archer with the ball in hand as he helped England successfully defend the target in the one-over eliminator. Archer took Eoin Morgan’s side home with an inch-perfect Super Over as England won their first ODI World Cup in their own backyard.

ODI World Cup 2023: England handed major boost as Jofra Archer 'on course' for return, confirms coach Farbrace

England claimed their first 50-over World Cup win four years ago on this day in 2019 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, beating New Zealand in the super over.

England claimed their first 50-over World Cup win four years ago on this day in 2019 at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, beating New Zealand in the super over. It, however, wasn’t the talking point on that day and even to date; instead, it was the ‘boundary count’ rule that kept making headlines ever since. Ben Stokes, perhaps England’s greatest modern-day cricketer, was the protagonist of the story that day. 4 years ago today... (via @ICC) pic.twitter.com/5gdqe3EmWm — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) July 14, 2023 × A game well-poised until the fag end of England’s chase took an unlikely and rather shocking turn, when first the ball that touched Ben Stokes’ bat went for four; secondly, the result of the match, which went into the super over, was decided on the boundary count since both teams ended up scoring the same amount of runs in it. While all this proved lucky for England as they made most of the situation, a larger section of cricket fans and experts shared a different opinion. ALSO READ: Ashes 2023: Chris Woakes desperate to play in Old Trafford after Headingley heroics While some felt what all unfolded comes under the rule book and is fine, others questioned England’s spirit of the game and urged why instead of allowing that boundary off Stokes’ bat to stand, the umpires didn’t call it a dead ball. Four years apart, several questions are still left unanswered. However, with all said and done then, England won the match and ended their wait of lifting the 50-over World Cup in their fourth attempt. England’s World Cup to win Following the 2015 World Cup debacle, when England crashed out after a loss to Bangladesh, the Eoin Morgan-led side revamped their cricket and emerged as a great white-ball team. In the lead-up to the 2019 World Cup, England appeared the favourite, and they didn’t disappoint. After going down on two occasions in the group stages, once against Pakistan and then against Australia, England managed to stay alive and came good in the end. Upon reaching the semis, they beat Australia, and then against New Zealand in the finale, they looked in supreme touch. England first restricted the Kiwis to 241 for eight, and the lost four wickets inside 100 runs till the star pair of Ben Stokes and keeper-batter Jos Buttler bailed them out of trouble. Following three wickets, England looked like falling shy of their target, but it was Ben Stokes, who held his nerves and kept them alive, with luck playing a huge role too. After two ties – a first-of-its-kind incident in World Cup, England emerged as winners on the boundary count. Four years apart, both these teams will open the account in the 2023 World Cup in India. For anyone with a beating heart to watch Steve Smith getting floored after being hit in the back of the head off Jofra Archer’s bouncer was a terrible sight. Imagine how painful it must be for Smith. Upon returning to the Mecca of Cricket – the Lord’s, for the first time since the 2019 Ashes Test, Smith recalls the incident wherein he got ruled out of the game due to concussion. Smith was in tremendous form and was up against a bowler with raw pace – Jofra Archer. While batting on 80, Smith got hit on his arm off Archer’s steamy bouncer before one that hit the back of his head floored him. It was at that moment when everything inside that stadium stopped. With team doctors running onto the field, Smith was down and was taken off immediately. Though he returned after the fall of the next wicket, following smashing Chris Woakes for a boundary, Smith got out LBW on 88. He then got ruled out of the game due to a concussion. "It was a very difficult period to get through. I caught one on the arm, got away with a few pull shots that are top edge and a couple in the gaps,” Smith said. Revealing how painful that blow to the back of his head was, Smith said, "And then I copped one in the back of the head, which hurt a fair bit. At that stage, I didn't realise I was getting concussed. I went off and did all the tests, passed all the tests. Steve added after the adrenalin went out of the system, the aftermaths of that hit struck him as he felt he was a couple of beers down. "It wasn't until I came back out. Half-an-hour after, when the adrenalin sort of went out of my system, and I started to feel quite groggy - probably like I'd had a dozen beers, to be honest," the right-handed batter added. Blessing in disguise Very few must be aware that incident saw the birth of Marnus Labuschagne in Test cricket, as he made his debut as a substitute of a concussed player – Steve Smith. Since getting into the Test setup, Marnus emerged as one of the best players in such a short period, and is now ranked number one in Tests. While Smith, who scored over 700 runs in his previous outing in England, will aim to pile up runs as the second Test begins in three days time. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Early this month, Mumbai Indians (MI) were dealt with a major blow as speedster Jofra Archer got ruled out of the IPL 2023 edition. Archer featured in only five games for the Rohit Sharma-led franchise and accounted for a mere&nbsp;two wickets at an economy rate of 9.50. With the recurrence of stress fracture in his right elbow, he is now also out of the upcoming English summer, to miss Ashes 2023.

A lot was expected from Archer in the MI jersey. Having returned to international cricket, early this year, after almost 24 months, the 28-year-old never looked in his elements in IPL 2023, not bowling quick and looking threatening with the ball. After his return home, as the England Cricket Board (ECB) is monitoring his recovery, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has slammed Archer left, right and centre.

<h2>'MI&nbsp;paid big money for him and what has he given in return?'</h2>

Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. "

He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK."

<h2>'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted'</h2>

<h2>&nbsp;</h2>

Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity."

"There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Full marks to him if he chooses country over IPL, but if he chooses IPL then he has to fulfil his commitments totally and not make some excuse and leave early, especially towards the time when qualifying for the Playoffs becomes crucial."

Archer's career has been marred with injury concerns. After being a part of England's maiden ODI World Cup campaign, in 2019, his graph has only gone down.&nbsp;In 2021, a stress fracture to his right elbow halted his progress whereas it was followed by&nbsp;a stress fracture of the back in the following year. Now, Archer is running against time to fully recover and stage a comeback in the English line-up for their ODI WC defence, later this year in India.&nbsp;

'MI paid big money for him and what has he given in return?' Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day, "What has been Mumbai Indians experience of Jofra Archer? They took a punt on him knowing that he was injured and would be available only from this season. They paid big money for him and what has he given in return? He didn't seem 100 per cent fit and he should have informed the franchise about it. They only realised when he turned up and found that he was barely able to bowl at his usual pace. " He further opined, "In between the tournament, he went abroad for treatment which is what his country's cricket board apparently said. So he was never fully fit, but still came over. If he was committed to the franchise, who probably pay him more than the ECB does, he should have stayed right till the end even if he wasn't going to play and show his commitment towards the franchise. Instead, he has opted to fly off back to the UK." Also Read: SA will be missing a trick if they don't take Faf du Plessis to ODI World Cup, opines RCB star Dinesh Karthik 'This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted' Gavaskar added, "A day later, a story appears that he is going to get a multi-million-pound deal with Mumbai Indians to play for their team in the various leagues in the world. This has got to be the greatest diversionary trick attempted. Mumbai Indians are not fools to sign a lame horse for any future race. Make no mistake, Mumbai Indians won't be amused at the turn of events and now that they have come back well in the tournament without his presence, he will be lucky if he gets his full fee for the IPL and if he does then he would do well to give half to his favourite charity." "There's simply no point paying even one rupee for a player, however big a name he may be, if he is not going to be available for the entire tournament. It's got to be the player's choice to pick playing for an IPL franchise or his country. Full marks to him if he chooses country over IPL, but if he chooses IPL then he has to fulfil his commitments totally and not make some excuse and leave early, especially towards the time when qualifying for the Playoffs becomes crucial." Archer's career has been marred with injury concerns. After being a part of England's maiden ODI World Cup campaign, in 2019, his graph has only gone down. In 2021, a stress fracture to his right elbow halted his progress whereas it was followed by a stress fracture of the back in the following year. Now, Archer is running against time to fully recover and stage a comeback in the English line-up for their ODI WC defence, later this year in India.

IPL 2023: 'No point paying...': Gavaskar slams injured Jofra Archer, says 'what has he given MI in return?'

Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen thinks that fast bowler Jofra Archer's journey with England cricket has come to an end. The comments from Pietersen came after Archer was ruled out the entire upcoming English summer including the much-anticipated Ashes series against Australia at home.

Writing on his blog Betaway, Pietersen opined, "I'm gutted for Jofra. Absolutely gutted. I think this will probably end his journey with English cricket. I know that there are reports around a franchise contract, and that would be the smartest thing for him to do now. Take six months to recover, select a few tournaments to play, and bowl at the speed of light for a few months of the year. He would earn good money and still have a career in the game."&nbsp;

The former skipper also suggested that the England Cricket Board is also probably done with him. Pietersen, however, sympathised with the fast bowler and said that it's not Archer's fault as he's just injury prone.

But first of all, get himself fit," wrote Pietersen.&nbsp;

Notably, Archer returned to competitive cricket with Indian Premier League (IPL) where he plays for Mumbai Indians but couldn't live up to the expectations. The fast bowler has played in just five games and took wickets only at an average of 95 and an average of 60.

The last decent season of Archer in IPL was in 2020 when he played 14 games and took 20 wickets. Notably, 2020 was also the last time Archer played in the IPL before featuring in the current season.

Ashes 2023: Jofra Archer ruled out of entire English summer with recurrence of stress fracture

Mumbai Indians star man Jofra Archer is set for a bumper deal of Rs 10 crore as the franchise tries to implement the year-round policy. According to the latest reports on Thursday, the report suggests MI is to fork out a considerable sum that will see England Cricket Board (ECB) seek permission from the franchise to take him international duties. The 2019 World Cup winner recently left the MI camp with an elbow issue and will continue his rehabilitation in England.

A report released by The Daily Mail on Thursday suggests Archer will be offered a year-round contract, where the ECB will have to seek permission from MI to use him for international services. If the report is to be true, the player will earn Rs 10 crore despite having an injury-plugged reign at the helm of five-time champions.

The deal could force ECB to hand multi-year deals to English players to lure off interest created by big-money contracts from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Alex Hales is another player who is on the books of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and could be offered year-round. Despite being part of the team furniture, Hales pulled out of the services for the franchise this season.

For Archer, the player is focused on giving his best shot to make the Ashes squad while the ODI World Cup also remains a primary target.

"Archer has been recovering from right elbow surgery," an ECB statement said.

"However, pushing through the discomfort whilst recently playing, hoping it will settle, has proven challenging. Therefore, it has been agreed for him to return to the UK for a period of rest and rehabilitation to give him the best opportunity for a full recovery,” the statement further added.

Chris Jordan has been named as a replacement for the injured England player and has already joined the team set-up with the business end of the season in full swing.

IPL 2023: Chris Jordan replaces Jofra Archer for remainder of season ahead of MI-RCB tie

Former Windies legend Chris Gayle has called for fit Jofra Archer to lead England’s pace attack during the home Ashes that begins in around a month's time. Gayle hailed England’s Test team coach Brendon McCullum for a sea of change&nbsp;he brought into the side and also applauded their new brand of cricket, ‘Bazball’, that has taken the world by storm.

Speaking to Sky Sports on the sidelines of Miami GP, Gayle said he is looking forward to watching the Ashes and being there at some point as well. He added, despite England being the hot favourites this time, no one should discount Australia, and considering they are also playing India in the WTC ahead of the Ashes, which begins on June 16th in Edgbaston, the Aussies would have some match practice heading into the battle for the urn.

Speaking particularly of Archer, who following the 2019 WC triumph, suffered a series of injuries, which also saw him missing Test cricket for over two years now, Gayle said Archer needs to be back to his best as England and world cricket need him.&nbsp;

Calling him entertaining and an express pacer, Gayle wished him good luck in his recovery.

Chris Gayle hails magnificent McCullum, calls for fit Jofra Archer to lead England's attack in 2023 Ashes

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jofra Archer said he's doing his best to regain full fitness after missing four straight matches due to soreness in his elbow. After returning to competitive cricket following a long injury lay-off, Archer made his MI debut against RCB in IPL 2023, where he went wicketless for 33 runs in four overs.&nbsp;

After the game, head coach Mark Boucher informed about swelling in Archer's elbow that further ruled him out. As per the latest reports, the right-arm pacer returned to the nets on Thursday afternoon and bowled four overs - giving an impression as soon he'd be available for selection.

Speaking with ESPNcricinfo, Archer said the past two weeks didn't go the way he had planned and that he expected his body to take longer to reach 100% after being out of action for so long.

"Obviously the last two weeks aren't exactly what you would hope for after being so fully active," Archer told ESPNcricinfo. "But it's what you expect when you've been off for a long time: the body's not going to be 100 per cent straight away."

Archer added he and even the team management are not rushing him into getting fit, and even though he cannot wait to get back to the field, the seamer said he is not sure by when he can get the green signal.

"There are going to be moments where it feels a lot more serious than it actually is. I don't know which game will be the next game, but I'm just trying to put myself in the best position possible [to play]," Archer said. "To be honest, I still want to bowl fast and stuff - but when you feel good, you bowl good. I just want to focus on feeling good at the minute," the Englishman added.&nbsp;

Ahead of the 2022 auction, the former five-time champions picked Archer for INR 8 crores (£780,000 approx.) despite knowing he will remain unavailable for that season.

Upon returning, Archer played for MI Cape Town in SA20 and then joined Mumbai Indians for IPL 2023.

Talking about his stay at MI so far, Archer said he is enjoying his time here and hopefully can soon win some games for this team.

"I've been really well looked after here. You feel at home," Archer said. "Everyone has welcomed me with open arms. It's a great franchise, and hopefully, I get the opportunity to win a few games for them. We've won more games than we've lost which is miles better than what we did last year, so everything is going well, and the mood in the camp is good."&nbsp;

As MI will play PBKS at home in a Saturday evening encounter, Archer could return to the XI in that game.&nbsp;

Mumbai Indians fast bowler Jofra Archer said he's doing his best to regain full fitness after missing four straight matches due to soreness in his elbow. After returning to competitive cricket following a long injury lay-off, Archer made his MI debut against RCB in IPL 2023, where he went wicketless for 33 runs in four overs.

"But it's what you expect when you've been off for a long time: the body's not going to be 100 per cent straight away." Archer added he and even the team management are not rushing him into getting fit, and even though he cannot wait to get back to the field, the seamer said he is not sure by when he can get the green signal. "There are going to be moments where it feels a lot more serious than it actually is. I don't know which game will be the next game, but I'm just trying to put myself in the best position possible [to play]," Archer said. "To be honest, I still want to bowl fast and stuff - but when you feel good, you bowl good. I just want to focus on feeling good at the minute," the Englishman added. IPL 2023: Jofra Archer close on returning to XI for Mumbai Indians, says his aim remains to bowl fast

Mumbai Indians (MI) women have made a terrific start of the 2023 Women's Premier League (WPL) by winning their first two matches. In their first match against Gujarat Giants (GG-W) by 143 runs and against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB-W) by 9 wickets.

In both those matches, MI-W's West Indian all-rounder Hayley Matthews played an important role. After scoring 47 runs against GG, Matthews gave a Player-of-the-Match performance against RCB as she took three wickets and scored 77 runs off 38 balls.

Congratulating Matthews on her performance, England bowler Jorfra Archer, who plays for Mumbai Indians men's side in the Indian Premier League (IPL), posted a video on the social media. Archer, however, got cheeky in the end and teased Hayley about her favorite team in the English Premier League (EPL), Arsenal, to which Hayley posted a epic reply.&nbsp;

Mumbai Indians' Instagram handle posted the video by Archer and tagged Matthews. It was captioned, " @hkmatthews50, Jofra has a special message for you! Arsenal fans, you may want to skip hearing the last line."
