The supremely-talented Punjab batter Shubman Gill will lend solidity to the Indian middle-order when a major reshuffle is expected to force struggling Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane out of the Test team.

The reshuffle is likely to happen in the wake of India's shock 1-2 defeat against an unfancied South Africa.
India's next Test assignment is a two-match series against Sri Lanka, starting February 25 in Bengaluru and at least two middle-order slots will be up for grabs.

Rohit Sharma is expected to be fit for that Test series and will take up his opening slot alongside KL Rahul.
Gill has mostly played as an opener but once he recovers from his shin injury and makes himself available, it is expected that both team management and the selectors will pick him as a specialist middle-order batter.

Pujara and Rahane's exit from the national side is certain. They can only save their places if coach Rahul Dravid puts his foot down and asks the selection committee to give the out-of-form duo one last chance.

But if that happens, it is understandably going to cause a lot of heartburn to all the deserving youngsters, who might feel severely let-down for not getting the break at the right moment in their respective careers.

"I think both Pujara and Rahane will be dropped from the team for the Sri Lanka series. Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari will both play," Sunil Gavaskar said while commentating on India-South Africa series.

"We'll have to see who plays at number three. Hanuma Vihari may take Pujara's place and Shreyas Iyer could be number five in place of Rahane, but we will have to see. Nevertheless, I think there will certainly be two spots up for grabs against Sri Lanka," Gavaskar was also heard saying.

However, team management's school of thought might just be divergent from the legendary former India opener.
With Rahane and Pujara bringing in the same type of game into play during past two years, where it was more about self preservation and less about keeping the scoreboard ticking (save the second innings at Wanderers), the Indian team will need a free-flowing batter in that middle-order, who has the ability to take the game away in one session.

In terms of skills, technique, temperament, Gill is the solution to the problem. In fact, had KL Rahul not opted out of New Zealand home series due to niggle and fatigue, Gill would have played in the middle-order.

If Gill plays at number five, he can exploit the conditions when the ball becomes old and the attack is tired. Also, he has the range to take on the bowlers when the second new ball will be in operation.

Two way battle between Vihari-Iyer

The trickier choice is for the other middle-order slot where Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari will be locked in an intense battle. Both have been impressive -- Iyer in his short two-match career and Vihari giving his all in one overseas Test he has competed in.

Vihari is a defensive player, who brings in technical solidity and a sense of calm which is a pre-requisite in Test cricket, especially as the conditions and flow of the game keep changing.

It makes him a good choice for number three as Pujara's replacement but if positive intent and x-factor is considered, Iyer is certainly a far better choice.

However the jury is still out on one aspect of Iyer's batting which the selectors as well head coach Rahul Dravid will be keenly assessing -- the Mumbaikar's ability to handle short balls.

Any chance of comeback for Pujara-Rahane

In Indian cricket, you can never say never. Both are 33 years old and perhaps need to go back to the drawing board and revisit what they have been doing wrong.

The problem with professional cricketers is that if a technical flaw crops up in midst of a series, rectifying it is tough and they just work their way around that flaw.

It's a kind of temporary option but with no dedicated off-seasons like what players of yesteryears enjoyed, probably a break from the national team will give them enough time to work on their flaws and comeback stronger.

It would have been great had the Ranji Trophy not been put on hold once again as it would have given them quality match practice and ability to correct mistakes in live game situation which is always the best option.
If not, they might play for English county but to be fair, county stint during the earlier phase wasn't of great help to either Pujara or Rahane.

Therefore, it doesn't look too bright for the duo as some serious talent is waiting in the wings.

Star Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan hailed Virat Kohli as the best batter in the world as he opened up on his equation with the Indian Test skipper. Rizwan and Kohli had come up against each other during India's blockbuster clash against Pakistan at the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

Rizwan had slammed an unbeaten half-century along with Pakistan skipper Babar Azam to help their team earn a comprehensive win by ten wickets against India. It was a dominant performance from the Men in Green, who chased down the target of 152 runs with 13 balls to spare without losing a single wicket.

Rizwan, who was the hero of Pakistan's ten-wicket win against India, revealed he shares a great bond with Kohli, who was leading Team India in the T20 World Cup 2021. The Pakistan wicket-keeper batter also revealed an interesting anecdote from the game.

“No doubt Virat Kohli is number one in the world,” Rizwan told Paktv.tv.&nbsp;

“When we play cricket, we are all like a family. When we took a review against Pant after he played a reverse sweep, he (Kohli) said are you trying to get all of us out in 10 overs?" - he added.

Pakistan bowlers were on top of their game against India right from the word go as they sent the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul cheaply inside the first three overs before Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed in the sixth over. Kohli's 57 and Rishabh Pant's 39 helped the Men in Blue post 151 runs on the board.

Babar (68) and Rizwan (79) slammed unbeaten half-centuries apiece to take the Men in Green home comfortably. Rizwan revealed a lot was said from Kohli's end during Pakistan's run-chase but refused to dwell into the details of the conversation.

“When we were batting, he also said a few things. I can’t repeat the things that were said, but all I can say is that he is a really nice guy," Rizwan said.

Former India cricketer Ajit Agarkar believes the Indian team management needs to take a firm call regarding the future of senior batsmen Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane. Both Rahane and Pujara have struggled with their respective forms in Tests for India in the last few years and have failed to score runs consistently.

The duo's lean patch continued in the recently-concluded three-match Test series against South Africa where they both failed to get going once again. While Rahane managed to score 136 runs in three matches against the Proteas, Pujara notched up only 124 runs in as many games in what was an abysmal display from the senior duo.

There have been calls over the exclusion of both Pujara and Rahane from India's Test squad with a number of youngsters waiting in the wings. The likes of Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari and Shubman Gill can all be slotted in the middle-order while Ruturaj Gaikwad and KS Bharat among others remain great future prospects for the country in the longest format.

Former India cricketer Agarkar said there are tough decisions to be made on Pujara and Rahane's future but India have talented players waiting in the wings to take their spots in the team.&nbsp;

"There is no doubt that there is scrutiny on Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane and there has to be a discussion about that because you have players who can take their places. Certainly, there are tough decisions to be made, not only about Pujara or only about Rahane, but regarding both of them," Agarkar said during a discussion on Star Sports.

"You have two players - Shreyas Iyer played a good Test in Kanpur and I don't think Vihari has done anything wrong whenever he has played Test cricket. You have Shubman Gill as well, so you have options," he added.

<h2>You have to decide what is best for the Indian team: Agarkar</h2>

Both Rahane and Pujara have been underperforming with the bat for quite a while now in Tests. However, they have been given a long rope by the selectors and the team management considering their experience and their contributions in the past.

However, Agarkar believes Pujara and Rahane's future should be decided for the larger good of the team as the duo look under pressure each time they walk out to bat in the middle.&nbsp;

"It is not that you are doing this just because you have lost. We are seeing with both these players for quite some time that every time they go out to bat, we say they are under pressure, or it might be their most important innings, or their last innings in Test cricket and the way they are batting," said Agarkar.

Ajit Agarkar on Rahane and Pujara's future in Test cricket: 'You have players who can take their places'

Indian captain Virat Kohli and other players have been subjected to immense criticism following their outburst at the stump-mic during Day 3 of the recently-concluded series-deciding third Test against South Africa in Cape Town. Indian players were seen openly expressing their frustration and accusing the official host broadcaster of controlling the hawk-eye projection after a DRS call went against them.

Dean Elgar was trapped lbw by R Ashwin during Soth Africa's second innings on Day 3 and was adjudged out by the on-field umpire. He later went for a review and managed to survive as the hawk-eye projected the ball to be going over the stumps despite the replays suggesting that the batter had been hit below his knee by the ball.

A controversy erupted soon as Indian skipper Kohli walked towards the stump-mic to aim a jibe at SuperSport - the host broadcaster. R Ashwin and KL Rahul also joined in and aimed digs at the broadcaster, accusing them of controlling the DRS. The Indian team were warned about their conduct during the day's play but were not charged by the ICC.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, the ICC match officials had a word with the Indian team management post the conclusion of the Test match and warned them about their on-field conduct. There was no charge levelled against India for a code of conduct breach.

"Focus on your team as well when they shine the ball eh, not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time," Kohli was heard saying on the stump-mic after Elgar managed to survive the lbw decision.&nbsp;"You should find better ways to win, SuperSport," said Ashwin as he also vented out on the host broadcaster.

Kohli was asked to share his views on the controversial episode during the post-match presser on Friday after India's seven-wicket loss in the third Test. The Indian skipper chose to remain silent on the issue and said he didn't want to trigger any controversy.

"That one moment seems very nice and very exciting to make a controversy out of, which honestly I'm not interested in making a controversy of it at all. It was just a moment that passed and we moved on from it, and just kept focusing on the game and trying to pick up wickets," Kohi said in the post-match presser.

India lost the series-deciding third and final Test against South Africa by seven wickets in Cape Town on Friday (January 14) as the visitors lost the three-match series 2-1. Virat Kohli &amp; Co. had come close to pulling off a historic maiden Test series win on South African soil when they won the first Test in Centurion comfortably by 113 runs.

However, South Africa bounced back strongly and went on to script a remarkable turnaround as they won the next two games in a row to clinch the series. India were thus denied a chance to win their maiden Test series in the Rainbow nation despite being in a closing distance of glory.

Post India's 2-1 defeat in the recently-concluded Test series, former England captain Michael Vaughan resumed his off the field rivalry with former India batsman Wasim Jaffer. The two former cricketers never shy away from poking fun at each other at the expense of their respective national side's losses.

Vaughan tried to troll Jaffer by 'checking on him' after India's defeat, however, the former India batter, who is famous for his witty tweets, had a brilliant response. “Evening @WasimJaffer14 !! Just checking you are ok,” Vaughan tweeted for Jaffer.

“Haha all good Michael, don't forget we are still leading you 2-1," Jaffer responded as he reminded the former England captain of India's 2-1 lead in the five-match series against England.

'Don't forget..': Wasim Jaffer responds as Michael Vaughan 'checks on him' after India's 2-1 defeat vs SA

South African broadcaster SuperSport has responded to the allegations of foul-play made by the Indian players during Day 3 of the recently-concluded third Test between the two sides at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. Indian players, including captain Virat Kohli, didn't shy away from venting out their frustration on the official broadcaster for the hosts after a controversial DRS call went South Africa's way on Day 3 of the Test match.

The incident happened during Day 3 when South Africa skipper Dean Elgar was trapped plumb lbw by R Ashwin. The on-field umpire raised his finger and deemed Elgar out. However, the SA captain went for a review and the DRS hawk-eyer showed the ball was going over the stumps despite the replays suggesting that the ball had hit him below his knee.

The hawk-eye tracker left Indian players baffled as Kohli and others were absolutely furious. Kohli was then seen walking towards the stump mic and taking a jibe at the host broadcaster SuperSport. “Focus on your team as well when they shine the ball eh, not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time,” Kohli was heard saying.

R Ashwin and KL Rahul also joined the bandwagon and alleged foul-play by taking a dig at SuperSport. “You have got to find better ways to win SuperSport,” Ashwin was caught saying on the stump-mic while Rahul said - “The whole country against us 11.”

South African broadcaster responds after Indian players allege foul-play in Dean Elgar DRS controversy

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli didn't hold back as he went after the South Africa players once after another in the recently-concluded third and final Test between the two sides at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. South Africa won the match by seven wickets after comfortably chasing down the target of 212 runs with seven wickets to spare in their second innings on Day 4 (Friday).

While it proved to be an easy win for the hosts&nbsp;in the end, the game saw some heated moments between the players from both sides. Both the teams gave their all to come out on top and the players were involved in some fiery exchanges throughout the course of the Test match.

After venting out his frustration on the stump mic after Dean Elgar survived a controversial DRS call on Day 3, Kohli went after South Africa batter Rassie van der Dussen on Day 4 of the Test match. Kohli gave it back to Van der Dussen over his heated exchange with Rishabh Pant during India's second innings on Day 3.

The incident happened in the 37th over of South Africa's second innings when Mohammed Shami thought he had induced an edge of Van der Dussen's bat. India went for a review only to find out that his bat had hit the ground which caused the noise as the batter was ruled not out. Though, there was a spike detected on the ultra edge when the ball passed the bat.

Kohli was thus once again left unhappy and had a chat with the on-field umpire before heading back towards the second slip. On his way, he had a small exchange with Van der Dussen and taunted him for going After 24-year-old Pant.

"Really? So you go after someone who is five years younger than you? Yeah? And then you are asking me if you sledge Rishabh?," Kohli can be heard telling the Proteas batter on the stump mic.

<h2>South Africa deny India historic Test series win</h2>

Asked to chase 212 runs in their second innings, South Africa got off to a shaky start as they lost opener Aiden Markram cheaply on 16 before captain Dean Elgar and Keegan Petersen added 78 runs for the second wicket. While Elgar could only score 30 off 96 balls, Petersen slammed a brilliant 82 to help South Africa scale down the 212-run target comfortably.

Day 3 of the Cape Town Test between India and South Africa saw Proteas skipper Dean Elgar survive a close DRS call during his side's 212-run chase towards the end of day's proceedings, on Thursday (January 13). Following the whole DRS controversy, many former cricketers and experts of the game have slammed Kohli &amp; Co. for their approach and comments following Dean Elgar lbw decision being overturned. Former Pakistan spinner Saeed Ajmal also joined the bandwagon and lashed out at Team India.

“I have seen Dean Elgar’s review many times. Seeing him, no one can say that the ball is going over the stump. It is clear that the ball is hitting his knees and he is out. But why is Team India raising questions? In the 2011 World Cup, when Sachin Tendulkar’s decision on my ball was reversed, then India had said that DRS is a reliable and accurate technique. Then why are they now saying that DRS technology is not reliable and correct. Simply because the verdict went against you,”&nbsp;Ajmal said. He, thus, recalled&nbsp;the controversial DRS decision which led to Tendulkar surviving a close lbw call off his bowling during the marquee 2011 ODI WC semi-final between India and Pakistan in Mohali.

“There was no point in not giving Sachin Tendulkar out even on my ball in the 2011 World Cup. In 2011, my ball was not missing the stump in the same way as Ashwin was not doing against Elgar in Cape Town,”&nbsp;he added.

Virat Kohli-led India become first-ever batting line-up to achieve bizarre feat in purest format

South Africa defeated India by seven wickets in the series-deciding third Test of the three-match series on Friday (January 14) to clinch three-match series 2-1. Keegan Petersen turned out to be the hero for the hosts as he slammed a brilliant knock of 82 runs to help South Africa chase down the target of 212 runs in their second innings comfortably and win the Cape Town encounter.

It was a disappointing batting performance from the Indian team in the game as the visitors were bundled out for just 198 runs in their second innings after managing a lead of 13 runs. South African batters produced a gritty display with the bat to ensure they bounced back to claim the series 2-1 after losing the series-opener in Centurion by 113 runs.

After winning the first Test in Centurion, India were in a closing distance of scripting history by winning their maiden Test series in the Rainbow nation as they needed just one more win to secure the series. However, South Africa won the next two games in a row to ensure India's hunt for their maiden Test series win in the country was extended.

Kohli said South Africa deserved to win the series after the way they bounced back post their loss in the first game and pointed out how lapse of concentration in key moments cost India the series.

"I think it's a great spectacle of Test cricket for all to see. We played well in the first game to win but South Africa bounced back well in the second and carried on the momentum in the third as well. There was some lapse of concentration from us as well in key moments," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

"I thought South Africa performed better in those key moments and totally deserved the win," the Indian skipper added.

Virat Kohli pins blame on India's batters

&nbsp;While Kohli credited the South African bowlers for bowling well throughout the three-match Test series, the Indian skipper admitted the Indian batters were far from being on top of their game.

While the likes of Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara continued to disappoint, Kohli himself struggled to get going in the Test series. Barring his unbeaten century in the second innings of the third Test, Rishabh Pant also had an average outing in the series.

"The opposition bowlers bowled well this series but generally, we haven't been consistent. We have had too many batting collapses. Of course, it (batting) has been the reason, no doubt about that. Their bowlers were just better in terms of their execution and applying pressure. Batting is certainly something to be looked at. No excuses there," Kohli said as he explained the reason behind India's series loss.

"It's really disappointing for sure. We did well in Australia and England but that doesn't guarantee us success in South Africa," he added.

'No doubt about that': Virat Kohli explains reason behind India's 2-1 defeat in Test series vs South Africa

India lost the third and final Test versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town on Friday (January 14). Day 4 commenced with South Africa in the driver's seat, at 101-2 in pursuit of 212, as Keegan Petersen, Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma completed the formalities for the home side to win by 7 wickets and claim the series 2-1.

The series had plenty of moments as both sides showed a lot of character, grit and determination to emerge on top. Thus, the three-match Test series was intensely and Day 3 of the final Test was a prove of it. After Rishabh Pant's unbeaten ton propelled India to setup a 212-run target for the home side, Dean Elgar survived a very close lbw call during the fag end of the day's proceedings, off R Ashwin's bowling.&nbsp;

After being given out initially by the on-field umpire, Elgar referred the decision upstairs. While the replays showed that the ball had hit the batter below the knee, the hawk-eye displayed that the ball was going above the stumps. Hence, he managed to survive as Indian players expressed their frustration without mincing their words.

Captain Kohli said on the stump-mic, "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time."

Meanwhile, KL Rahul was heard saying, “Whole country playing against XI guys," whereas the 35-year-old Ashwin and said, "You should find better ways to win Supersport (the host broadcaster)."

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has now commented on the DRS controversy and lashed out at Team India for their rant on-field. He told Fox Sports, “I think that is disgraceful from the Indians personally. Decisions go with you, they go against you, that didn’t go the way they think it should have gone. The series had plenty of moments as both sides showed a lot of character, grit and determination to emerge on top. Thus, the three-match Test series was intensely and Day 3 of the final Test was a prove of it. After Rishabh Pant's unbeaten ton propelled India to setup a 212-run target for the home side, Dean Elgar survived a very close lbw call during the fag end of the day's proceedings, off R Ashwin's bowling. Captain Kohli said on the stump-mic, "Focus on your team as well and not just the opposition, trying to catch people all the time." Meanwhile, KL Rahul was heard saying, “Whole country playing against XI guys," whereas the 35-year-old Ashwin and said, "You should find better ways to win Supersport (the host broadcaster)." Virat Kohli should be fined or suspended: Michael Vaughan lashes out at Team India over DRS rant

Senior India batsman Ajinkya Rahane's struggles continued in the ongoing third Test against South Africa at the Newlands Stadium in Cape Town. The under-fire batter, who has been facing criticism from all corners for his long-standing lean patch in the longest format of the game, was dismissed cheaply for 1 and 9 in the third Test in Cape Town.&nbsp;

As the veteran batter continues to disappoint, former India cricketer and expert Sanjay Manjrekar believes Rahane does not deserve another innings for Team India in the longest format. Manjrear believes Rahane needs to go back and prove himself in first-class cricket to justify his selection in the Test team.

Many believed Rahane would make way for returning skipper Virat Kohli in the ongoing series-deciding third Test between India and South Africa after his disappointing show. However, a half-century in the second innings of the second Test saw Rahane buy a little more time for himself.

However, he failed to carry the momentum in the all-important third Test and is likely to be axed from the Test side. Manjrekar said Rahane's form in the last 3-4 years has been woeful and there is nothing that gives him slightest of hopes of a turnaround from the batter.

“It’s (his dismissal) a combination of a good delivery and Ajinkya Rahane’s form. He needs to go back and play first-class cricket and hopefully get his mojo back. I would not give Rahane another innings. Pujara has a stronger case in my book. Nothing about Rahane in the last 3-4 years gives me hope that he is coming back into form. There have been glimmers when he got a hundred in Melbourne. But, apart from that, nothing much,” Manjrekar said on ESPN Cricinfo.

Would not give Ajinkya Rahane another innings: Manjrekar wants senior batter to play first-class cricket

India's Test captain Virat Kohli remains a livewire on the field when leading his side. He rarely shies away from getting into the nerves of the opposition and likes to give it back. Kohli was absolutely furious after a controversial DRS call went in South Africa's favour during Day 3 of the ongoing third Test between the two sides in Cape Town on Thursday.

Kohli lost his cool and directed a brutal dig towards the host broadcaster (SuperSport) after South Africa skipper Dean Elgar survived an LBW call. R Ashwin had trapped Elgar plumb and the ball hit him below his knee, however, the DRS&nbsp;hawk-eye predicted the ball to be going over the stumps.

Kohli along with the likes of Ashwin and KL Rahul aimed jibes at the host broadcaster after the decision saw Elgar survive. Many have criticised Kohli and the other Indian players for going overboard with their reaction, including former India opener Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir slammed Kohli for setting the wrong example with his behaviour.

Calling the Indian skipper 'immature', Gambhir said with such actions, Kohli can never become an idol for youngsters across the nation. “Kohli is very immature. It's worst for an Indian captain to say like this in stumps. By doing this you will never be an idol to youngsters," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

“In the first innings, you got a 50-50 call on caught behind then you were silent and in Mayank appeal too. I think Dravid will talk to him on this topic,” he added.

Kohli was visibly upset after Elgar's dismissal was overturned by the DRS before he walked up to the stumps to vent out his frustration. "Focus on your team while they shine the ball. Not just the opposition. Trying to catch people all the time,” he was heard saying on the stump-mic taking a dig at the official&nbsp;broadcaster.

Virat Kohli is very immature: Gautam Gambhir slams Indian skipper after stump-mic outburst in 3rd Test

Indian captain Virat Kohli was absolutely livid as he raged into the stump mic following a controversial DRS decision which saw South Africa skipper Dean Elgar survive during Day 3 of the ongoing third Test between the two sides in Cape Town. The incident happened during South Africa's second innings after the visitors were asked to chase the target of 212 runs.

During the 21st over, South Africa skipper Dean Elgar was given out LBW by the on-field umpire after being trapped plumb in front by spinner R Ashwin. However, Elgar decided to review the decision and opted for the DRS. While the replays showed the ball had hit Elgar below the knee, the hawk-eye showed that the ball was going over the stumps.

Much to Indian players' surprise and agony, the on-field umpire's decision was overruled as Elgar was given not out by the third umpire on the basis of the hawk eye's prediction. Kohli was certainly not happy with the decision and was spotted venting out his frustration on the stump mic.

Day 3 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa commenced with the Virat Kohli-led Indian team 57-2, with an overall lead of 70 runs. Kohli &amp; Co. needed few good partnerships to take the lead beyond the 200-run mark as the visitors aimed to setup anything over 250 as target for the Proteas.&nbsp;

However, India's day started on a forgettable note, on Thursday (January 13),&nbsp;with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane falling soon. Nonetheless, Captain Kohli was joined by keeper-batsman Rishabh Pant in the middle as the duo stitched a vital 94-run stand for the fifth-wicket to take India's score forward. While Kohli was watchful and kept on guiding the youngster at the other end, the 24-year-old Pant continued to add runs after his skipper's departure and went onto slam his fourth ton in the purest format of the game.

India vs SA, 3rd Test: Rishabh Pant enters record books with sensational ton on Day 3 in Cape Town

India and South Africa are involved in a thrilling third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town. The entire series has been a topsy-turvy ride with both teams leaving no stone unturned and not allowing the other to dictate terms from the word go.

While KL Rahul, Captain Virat Kohli, pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, all-rounder Shardul Thakur and Rishabh Pant have done well during the course of the series for the Rahul Dravid-coached Indian team, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, R Ashwin, etc. haven't done anything extra ordinary. Talking about Mayank, the right-hander started the tour with a fine 60 in the first innings of the series opener, however, he couldn't capitalise on any of the following outings to return with scores of&nbsp;9, 17, 3, and 7.

Thus, former Indian fast-bowling all-rounder Ajit Agarkar opened up on Mayank's struggles overseas and said was quoted as saying by News18,&nbsp;"He has wasted a chance because he started the series well. It is not easy when Rabada is in such a good rhythm, the way he was bowling, but he [Mayank] has technical faults. He gets out in the same way and he will get more exposed, especially, in overseas conditions."

"He could have done very little with this ball because it was close to the off-stump on a good length, moved away slightly after pitching, and bounced as well. Mayank Agarwal has not played much in overseas conditions either because he is the third or fourth opener," Agarkar further mentioned.

Given that the likes of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill missed the SA Tests due to injury concerns, Mayank would be gutted to have not made a bigger contribution with the bat in the ongoing series, in the rainbow nation.

He has technical faults, will get more exposed in overseas conditions: Agarkar opines on Indian batter

It is safe to say that the current Indian cricket team is one of the best sides in the purest format of the game. They are ranked No. 1 in ICC Test rankings and have won some memorable series away from home in recent times, under Virat Kohli's leadership.

While Kohli's infectious energy, intensity and love for the Test format rubs off his teammates, one of the major reasons for India's rise in Tests -- since 2015 -- has been due to the pacers. The likes of Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, etc. have contributed immensely to India's rise in whites in the last five-six years.

Among the current pace battery, Shami wasn't having an ideal time in the longest format of the game when India last toured South Africa in early 2018. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar recalled how former head coach Ravi Shastri inspired Shami to get his act together and deliver during India's third and inconsequential Test versus the Proteas, in Johannesburg, after the visitors had already conceded the three-match series 2-0.

Talking on commentary during the ongoing third and final Test between India-SA, in Cape Town, Gavaskar said, "At the Wanderers, the last time around in 2018, was when they actually got stuck into him apparently because till then he hadn’t really delivered. They said to him that on this pitch if you’re not going to take wickets then… So the word is and I am not too sure that Ravi gave him a rocket."

"And then he came out and destroyed South Africa. Sometimes you know, you need to put an arm around a player, sometimes you’ve got to just get stuck into him."

Thus, Kohli &amp; Co. won the 2018 J'burg Test by 63 runs -- in defence of 241 -- courtesy Shami's five-fer in the final innings.

In the ongoing Cape Town Test, Shami has contributed with two scalps in SA's first innings. On his performance so far, the legendary Indian cricketer Gavaskar said, "Somebody of his calibre, you can’t keep him out of the game for a long time. He had seen Yadav take a couple of wickets, he had seen Bumrah bowl splendidly and take 2 wickets. So he wanted to contribute. And he came in and did it at the right time. That Bavuma and Petersen partnership was a delight to watch but at the same time it was threatening India, so they needed a wicket at that stage and Shami delivered it."

After India were bundled out for 223 in the 2021/22 Test series finale, SA were dismissed for 210 whereas Kohli &amp; Co. are 130-4, leading by 143, at lunch on Day 3, on Thursday (January 13).

[PICS] Team India players celebrate head coach Rahul Dravid's 49th birthday after Day 1 of 3rd Test

Indian captain Virat Kohli produced a masterclass with the bat on Day 1 of the third and final Test between India and South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). After the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first, the Indian openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal got dismissed for cheap. The onus fell on Cheteshwar Pujara and Kohli before the former's dismissal saw the Test captain take full responsibility to take charge of the Indian innings.

Kohli scored his second slowest half-century in the red-ball format by leaving plenty of balls outside-off stump line whereas scored on the leg side. Though he was beaten on a number of occasions, the 33-year-old didn't get bogged down as seemed to have kept his ego aside, of going for the outside-off deliveries, to return with a gritty 79. Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir lavished huge praise on Kohli for his batting performance.

"Virat has said many times that when you go to England, you should leave behind your ego in India. Today, Virat Kohli left behind his ego in the kit bag and this knock reminds me of his very successful tour of England, where he got beaten many times but left a lot of deliveries outside off-stump.

"Today, in the same way, he left deliveries outside off-stump, he got beaten as well but kept his ego with himself. He did not try to dominate the bowlers on every delivery," Gambhir said on Star Sports.

The former cricketer further asserted, "When you play in these conditions and against such bowlers on the first day, where there is help for the bowlers, you play in your shell at times although the South African bowlers did give him that opportunity." Along with that, his scoring areas might have been through the covers but he scored a lot of runs on his legs, which he has always done. So we saw a glimpse of the knocks he played in England."

Kohli has left behind his ego: Gambhir lauds Indian skipper's gritty 79-run knock on Day 1 of 3rd Test

Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli is currently enduring a lean patch in international cricket as he continues to wait for his first international century since November 2019. While he hasn't scored a ton for over two years, runs have also dried up for Kohli in Test cricket.

Speaking about his rough patch, former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar opined the Indian skipper looks low on self-confidence. Manjrekar said he never thought that someone like Kohli, who is known for his consistency and had set high standards for himself with his performances, will see his confidence dip.

Kohli is one of the best batters in the world at present and despite his rough patch continues to average over fifty in all three formats of the game. The Indian Test skipper might not have been at his very best of late but it won't take much time for him to regain his form once he gets going.

“Virat Kohli is a great batter. He’s certainly out of form. It’s the first time I have seen - I saw this in the IPL as well - that he’s a bit low on confidence which I thought would never happen. That’s why they say ‘never say never’. We have seen that because he hasn’t scored runs, his self-confidence has dipped a bit,” Manjrekar said on ESPN Cricinfo.

Kohli played the first Test against South Africa in Centurion where he managed 35 and 18 runs in the two innings before missing the second Test due to a back spasm. However, the Indian skipper has recovered well ahead of the third and final Test against the Proteas and will be looking to notch up a big score in the series decider.

Manjrekar has backed Kohli to bounce back to form in the third Test against South Africa which gets underway in Cape Town from Tuesday (January 11). The former India batsman believes Kohli will be scoring runs consistently once he is back in touch.

“But he’s a great batter and when he’ll score runs, he’ll be back in form because he’ll keep scoring consistently. It’s completely possible that he’ll be back in form in this Test," said Manjrekar.

'Never thought that would happen': Sanjay Manjrekar explains reason behind Virat Kohli's rough patch

India and South Africa have locked horns with each other on Day 1 of the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town on Tuesday (January 11). After winning the toss, India were 31 for no loss before both their openers were removed in a flash.&nbsp;

Thus, the onus fell on skipper Virat Kohli. Kohli, who is playing his 99th Test, returned to the playing XI after missing the second and penultimate Test due to upper back spasm. Playing on Rahul Dravid and his daughter Vamika's birthday, the 33-year-old Kohli looked in his elements and carried the innings single-handedly by contributing with a watchful 79. The right-hander looked set to finally break his century-drought, since late 2019, before he ran out of partners and edged one to the wicketkeeper off Kagiso Rabada in the final session to walk out for 79.&nbsp;

By virtue of his knock, the Indian Test captain moved past Dravid (624 runs) to become India's second-highest run-getter&nbsp;on South African soil in whites. For the unversed, Kohli is now only behind his idol Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar. Tendulkar amassed a whopping&nbsp;1161 runs against the Proteas in South Africa in the format, from 1992-2011.

Ind vs SA, 3rd Test: Virat Kohli surpasses head coach Rahul Dravid in elite list with watchful 50 on Day 1

On Tuesday (January 11), Team India head coach and former captain Rahul Dravid turned 49. The Wall, as he is famously known, is celebrating his birthday with the national cricket team as India have locked horns with South Africa for the third and final Test at Newlands, Cape Town.

Ahead of the commencement of the third and final Test, Dravid had a brief conversation with commentator&nbsp;Pommie Mbangwa on-air, where the former thanked one and all for the birthday wishes. However, he made an honest confession when it comes to the wishes on his special day.

Ahead of the all-important Test series finale, coach Dravid also revealed that the Virat Kohli-led Indian side doesn't need to be motivated as they are eager to go for the kill and achieve their maiden Test series win in SA. "At this level, you don’t motivate people to play the game. If I am having to do that before a big Test match with the opportunity to create history, then we have got the wrong people,” Dravid added.

For the unversed, India won the three-match Test series opener, in Centurion, before losing the second and penultimate Test at The Wanderers, Johannesburg. They need to win their first Test in Cape Town to make history and return with their maiden Test series triumph in the rainbow nation.

Major setback for KL Rahul-led Team India as star player tests positive ahead of SA ODIs

Indian wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant has been facing criticism from all corners ever since his poor show in the second innings of the recently-concluded Johannesburg Test against South Africa. Pant was deemed guilty of throwing his wicket away with a poor shot when India required him to stay in the middle and build a partnership.

India were 163/4 having lost Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara in quick succession when Pant had walked in to bat at no.6 during the second innings of the Johannesburg Test. The left-hander was dismissed on a duck on the third delivery he faced from Kagiso Rabada after a reckless shot.

While India head coach Rahul Dravid backed Pant over his 'positive intent', former India spinner Harbhajan reckoned the left-hander should draw a line between being reckless and playing with positive intent. In a video on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan agreed Pant should curb his natural instincts in Test cricket and not step out to play shots every time.

Harbhajan said positive intent does not mean stepping out and playing shots but it can also be playing good defensive shots and keeping the needs of the team above. Harbhajan added that questions will be raised on Pant if he continues throwing away his wicket the way he did in the second Test.

"Rishabh Pant is a talented player and the kind who can win India matches single-handedly. If an Indian wicketkeeper has played good cricket on overseas pitches, played match-winning innings, it is him. Those innings have come out of his bat. Should we stick with him? Because the kind of shots he has played and the way he has got out. Sometimes I feel those shots were unnecessary. Had he spent more time on the wicket, he could have scored more runs," said Harbhajan.

"But at the same time, if the same shots click, we say 'What a bold player. He comes with a positive intent from the first ball'. What I feel is that positive intent is one thing… it doesn't mean that you start stepping out and play shots. Even when you play a defensive stroke, that too can be from positive intent. If you go and start swinging your bats and play such shots, question will be raised at you," he added.

Pant has not been able to get going so far in the ongoing three-match Test series against South Africa. The southpaw scored 8 and 34 runs in the first Test before notching up scores of 17 and 0 in the second game. He will be hoping to bounce back and notch up a big score in the series-deciding third Test between the two sides which is currently underway in Cape Town.

Brilliant captain to excellent mentor: Happy Birthday, Indian cricket's selfless servant Rahul Dravid

India will be aiming to register a historic maiden Test series win in South Africa when they lock horns with the Proteas in the third and final Test of the three-match series in Cape Town. The series is currently locked at 1-1 with the decider set to get underway from Tuesday (November 11).

India have so far managed only four Test wins in South Africa and are yet to win their first-ever Test series in the Rainbow nation. However, they have a strong chance of doing the unthinkable this time around as they stand just one win away from clinching the ongoing series against the Proteas.

India won the series-opener against South Africa comprehensively by 113 runs before slipping to a seven-wicket defeat in the second Test against the hosts in the absence of captain Virat Kohli, who missed the game due to a back spasm. With Kohli back in the playing XI, India have been handed a massive boost ahead of the series decider.

India's Test record in Cape Town:

India have so far played a total of five Test matches at the Newlands in Cape Town and have remained winless. They have managed three draws while South Africa have churned out three wins in the five encounters played between the two sides at the iconic venue. Here is a look at India's performances in Test matches at Cape Town.

1992

India and South Africa met for the first time in Cape Town in the year 1992 when Mohammad Azharuddin was leading India. South Africa posted 360 runs on the board in their first innings before bundling out India for 276. In their second innings, the hosts declared on 130/6 while India could only manage 29/1 as the game ended in a draw.

1997&nbsp;

In the second Test meeting between India and South Africa in Cape Town in 1997, the hosts got the better of the visitors by a massive margin of 282 runs. Riding on centuries from Gary Kirsten and Brian Mcmillan the Proteas posted a huge total of 529 runs in their first innings which saw them walk away with the game comfortably.

2007&nbsp;

India registered their first Test win in South Africa in the 2007 tour of the country. However, the visitors had lost the third Test in Cape Town by five wickets. Despite posting a strong total of 414 runs on the board in their first innings, India managed a lead of only 41 runs before being bowled out for 169 runs in the second innings to lose the game by five wickets.

However, the hosts rode on a century from Jacques Kallis to once again score over 300 runs in their second innings and draw the game.

A look at India's record in Cape Town as Virat Kohli & Co. search for maiden Test series win in South Africa

India and South Africa are set to lock horns with each other at Newlands, Cape Town for the third and final Test starting on Tuesday (January 11). Ahead of the third and final Test, the 33-year-old Indian captain Virat Kohli addressed the media in a pre-match press conference.

Kohli, on Monday (January 10), opened up on India's possible team combination, on his century drought, growth of the Test team under his captaincy, transition phase, Rishabh Pant's shot selection, etc. In the second and penultimate Test, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg, Pant's shot selection in India's second essay was heavily criticised as the left-hander went for a big shot, off Kagiso Rabada, and threw his scalp when the visitors' lead wasn't even close to the 200-run mark.

Hence, Kohli opened up on Pant's approach and recalled an important piece of advice received from his former captain MS Dhoni.

Kohli said in the presser, "We did have a conversation with Rishabh Pant during practice and when a batter plays a bad shot, he would know more than anybody if he has played the right shot according to the situation and as long as an individual accepts that, he will make progress. We have all made mistakes in our career in important situations where we have got out, due to pressure or whatever the situation was."&nbsp;

Moreover, the Indian Test captain then mentioned Dhoni's advice and said, "I remember MS Dhoni once telling me that there should be a 6-7 months gap between your two mistakes. That is how you will progress in your international career. That became a part of my system. So reflecting on your mistakes is important and I know Rishabh does that and he will learn from his mistakes."&nbsp;

India will look to win the third and final Test and also register their first-ever series win on South African soil. After winning the series opener in Centurion, Kohli-less India lost the penultimate contest as the series is interestingly poised at 1-1 heading into the deciding match.

Virat Kohli remembers Dhoni's advice while talking about Pant's shot selection ahead of Cape Town Test

Indian Test captain Virat Kohli has responded to the criticism over his lean patch in international cricket. Kohli, who has set high standards for himself with his incredible consistency in the past, has failed to score a century for over two years in international cricket. Kohli had last scored a hundred in 2019.

He has since been looking to bring an end to his century drought and join Ricky Ponting at the second spot in the list of batters with the most centuries in international cricket. While he has failed to notch up a hundred, his average has also significantly dropped in the longest format.

Kohli has managed only 652 runs in his last 14 Test matches at an average of just over 26 which is quite below-par as per the standards of the Indian skipper. However, Kohli is not bothered by his lean patch and is aware that rough patches are part of an athlete's career.

"It is not the first time. Let's not get away from reality, it has happened a few times (lean patch)," Kohli said in the pre-match presser ahead of the third Test between India and South Africa in Cape Town.&nbsp;

"I don't look at myself from the lens that the outside world looks at me. The standards I have been compared with have been set by myself. More than anyone else I take pride in wanting to do the best for the team. In sports sometimes things don't go the way you want them to go but I realise that I have been involved in very important moments in the last year or so as a batter," the Indian skipper added.

Kohli had missed the second Test against the Proteas due to a back spasm after leading India to a thumping win in the series-opener in Centurion. The Indian skipper has recovered in time and is all set to make his comeback in the playing XI for the series-decider as India remains one win away from clinching maiden Test series win in South Africa.

Amid the chatter over his poor form, Kohli said he is not someone who looks at numbers and doesn't need to prove himself to anybody. The Indian skipper will be hoping to revive his form and notch up a big score in the final Test against the Proteas to help India win script history on the tour.

"Eventually, those moments have been crucial. Sometimes your focal point changes, if you keep looking at yourself in terms of numbers you'll never be happy," said Kohli.

"I take a lot of pride and motivation to be in those moments and have nothing to worry about. I truly believe I don't need to prove myself to anyone. When you are in the position you are going to be judged by the outside world," he added.
