Former India captain and batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes both Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have only one more innings to save their respective Test careers. Pujara and Rahane were both dismissed cheaply once again in the ongoing second Test between India and South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg on Monday.

Pujara and Rahanve have both been under fire for quite some time now over their long-standing rough patch with the willow. Despite their inconsistent run, the senior batters have been constantly backed by the team management. However, their time might be running out with an intense competition for spots in the batting line-up.

Reacting to another failure from Rahane and Pujara, Gavaskar said the senior batters have only the next innings of the ongoing Johannesburg Test to save their Test careers.

"After those two dismissals one can say that they probably have just the next innings, both Pujara and Rahane, to save their Test careers," said Gavaskar on-air while commentating during Day 1 of the second Test.

"There have been questions asked about their place in the team and now with these two dismissals, they have just one innings left. If there is another innings and the way India is going, it looks like there will be another for them to score something and maybe keep their place in the team," the batting great added.

Openers Mayank Agarwal (26) and captain KL Rahul had given a good start to India in their first innings of the Johannesburg Test. However, the visitors lost the momentum after losing Mayank in the 15th over. His departure was followed by Pujara and Rahane's dismissal in quick succession.

However, captain Rahul is still out in the middle and has displayed amazing gritiness so far in his innings and is still unbeaten in the middle to help India recover from the middle-order collapse.

India are without their talismanic captain Virat Kohli in the ongoing second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. After a brilliant start to the three-match series with a thumping victory in the series-opener in Centurion, the Indian team would be looking to continue their winning run in Johannesburg and clinch the series with back-to-back wins.

However, Kohli's absence is a major blow for the visitors as the skipper not only led his troops to perfection on the field but was also looking to return to form with the willow. In his absence, KL Rahul is leading India in the second Test against the Proteas.

As India look to pull off a rare Test series win in South Africa this time around, Kohli's absence has come as a big hurdle on their way to glory. Nonetheless, it's the visitors, who are the favourites against hosts South Africa at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

India have not enjoyed much success when it comes to Tests in South Africa with just four wins so far against the Proteas in their own backyard. India have also never won a Test series in the Rainbow nation but have a great chance this time around with a 1-0 lead.

India unbeaten in Johannesburg

Despite India possessing a woeful record in South Africa overall, the visitors have been unbeaten in Johannesburg over the years. India have never lost a Test match at the Wanderers and have a phenomenal record at the venue. India have so far played five Tests in Johannesburg, winning two and drawing three matches.

India's record at the venue, which has assisted fast bowlers heavily over the years, proves why they are favourites against South Africa in the ongoing second Test despite not having Kohli in the line-up. India head coach Rahul Dravid was the first Indian captain to lead the team to a victory in a Test match against South Africa back in 2006.

"For some reason, the boys have always enjoyed playing at the Wanderers. It's a quicker pitch, but the bounce maybe hasn't been as much as at Centurion in the past. It is a strange one, it's one of those things, I can't exactly put a finger on the reason.

"It may be a familiarity with the city, the ground for some reason we've always done well there and it is hard to figure out why, but I really hope we continue that now," he said.

Despite Virat Kohli's absence, here's why India are favourites against South Africa in Johannesburg Test

India were dealt with a huge blow ahead of the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday (January 03) as captain Virat Kohli was ruled out of the game due to a back spasm. In his absence, KL Rahul, who was the vice-captain of the side, was asked to lead the team in the all-important encounter as the visitors hope to continue their winning momentum after a solid victory in the series-opener in Centurion.

Rahul was not India's designated vice-captain ahead of the start of the Test series with Rohit Sharma replacing Ajinkya Rahane as Kohli's deputy in the longest format. However, an injury to Rohit paved way for Rahul to be India's vice-captain in the three-match rubber. With Kohli missing out in the playing XI for the second Test, Rahul is India's new captain in charge in Johannesburg.

Reacting to the decision, former India selector Saba Karim lauded the team management for handing over the captaincy responsibility to Rahul in Kohli's absence. The former Indian cricketer said he was not only confident of Rahul having a good 2022 but also of him owning the next decade while serving the Indian team for a long time to come in all formats.

“I think this is an excellent decision. I am very confident that not only the upcoming year but the upcoming decade will belong to KL Rahul. The kind of form he has displayed, if he carries on with the same work ethic, he will serve India for many years to come,” said Karim on Khelneeti.

Rahul has also been named India's captain for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa in Rohit's absence and is being seen as one of the future leaders of the Indian team. The star batter has also led Punjab Kings for two seasons in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Karim believes Rahul has the quality to not let the burden of captaincy hamper his performances with the bat which is going to help him in the future.

“KL Rahul has shown those instincts while leading Punjab Kings. When you appoint a captain, you need to analyze if there is an improvement in his primary skill. Rahul has definitely shown this while captaining Punjab Kings. That’s why it is being hoped that his performance will get even better with the responsibility of leadership,” said the former selector.

Ind vs SA, 2nd Test: Big blow to India as Virat Kohli out of playing XI, KL Rahul takes charge

On Friday (December 31), the chairman of the selection committee Chetan Sharma addressed a press conference for the first time ever since taking over the top post. In the PC, Chetan opened up on several aspects pertaining to Indian cricket in recent times.

The most talked-about issue in Indian cricket, in recent times, has been the contradictory claims made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli regarding the latter's decision of quitting as T20I captain and the ODI captaincy switch. Hence, the former cricketer opened up on the Kohli vs BCCI row and said that the board and selectors had spoken to Kohli to reconsider his decision of resigning as the T20I skipper.

Thus, the controversy hasn't ended whereas it has become more complex given Chetan Sharma's statement, supporting Ganguly against Kohli. For the unversed, the 33-year-old Kohli had denied all claims of being asked to reconsider his decision. Amid all this, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra feels the story hasn't ended and one can expect some response from Kohli in the near future.

In a video on his YouTube channel, Chopra said: "A little more fuel has been added to the fire which was already there because the clarification has come from the BCCI via Chetan Sharma, who is the chairman of selectors."

"Chetan Sharma has issued a clarification that we all had asked Virat not to leave the T20I captaincy, that its timing is not correct; there will be an impact on the World Cup but the captain did not agree," he added.

He further asserted, "Everyone who was there in the selection committee meeting - selectors, BCCI officials, convenor - all present, requested Virat Kohli to not step down. This is Chetan Sharma's quote, but the captain said he wanted to step down. Captain had said no one had asked him anything, and everyone said it is a very progressive step."

"There should be no rumours and sources in 2022 although, after Chetan Sharma's statement, the shots might have been fired and maybe there will be reciprocation from Virat Kohli's side as well because till now that is what is happening - one person says something and the other refutes. It's not really nice, but then if it happens, don't be surprised."

The second Test will get underway on January 3 at The Wanderers, Johannesburg.

The chief selector further claimed he laughs at reports of a rift between the two superstar cricketers and asserted, "Sometimes I read reports about them and laugh. I'm telling you there is such good planning between them about the future. Things are fantastic. If you were in my place, you would have enjoyed watching how these guys are working together as a team and family and a unit. It's really saddening when people make up things like that. So please, leave controversies behind in 2021. Let's talk about how to make them the best team."

On December 15, 2021, Kohli had addressed the media in a press conference before India's departure to South Africa and had reacted to the baseless rift rumours. Back then, he had stated, "Between Rohit and I, there is no problem at all. Honestly, over the last 2, 2 and half years, I have been clarifying this. I am tired of doing it. Again and again, the same question is being asked of me. I will tell you one thing with a guarantee that my actions and my communications will never bring down the team till the time I play cricket."

Sometimes I read reports and laugh: Chetan Sharma reacts to Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma rift rumours

Team India's 18-man squad for the upcoming South Africa ODIs, in the African nation, was announced on December 31 (Friday), 2021. While the squad announcement was delayed reportedly to examine Rohit Sharma's fitness, the 18-member squad got finally revealed sans limited-overs skipper Rohit.

Rohit has been ruled out due to hamstring injury as his deputy KL Rahul will lead the Men in Blue in the three ODIs against SA, starting on January 19 at Paarl. After the squad announcement, BCCI's All-India Senior Selection Committee's chairman and former player Chetan Sharma attended his first-ever press conference since taking over the top post.

In the PC, Sharma addressed some important topics pertaining in Indian cricket at present, i.e. the ODI captaincy row, opened up on the prospects of having KL Rahul as the future leader and more.

On KL Rahul's rise

Chetan said at the PC, "We are looking to groom KL Rahul and we have confidence in him. He has proved his leadership qualities. KL is the best one who can handle the side. He is an all-format player and he has got good experience of captaincy... this is what all selectors think."

For the unversed, Rahul has captained Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two IPL seasons and is touted to be Lucknow franchise's skipper in IPL 2022.

On Ganguly vs Kohli statements

The biggest issue in Indian cricket right now is the contradictory statements made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and former limited-overs captain Kohli post the latter's T20I captaincy resignation and sacking as ODI skipper.

While Ganguly claimed that BCCI had asked Kohli to reconsider his decision to quit as T20I captain, the 33-year-old Kohli denied all such claims in a presser before the SA tour. Hence, Chetan Sharma shared his take on the matter and said, "When meeting started, it was a surprise for everybody. If the World T20 is round the corner and you hear something like this, what will be your reaction? Everyone present in that meeting had told him that he should rethink his decision (to quit T20 captaincy) and we can talk about it after the World Cup. All selectors felt at that time that this can affect us in the World Cup. It was told to Virat for sake of Indian cricket, please continue as the captain and it was told by everybody present in the meeting. The convenors were there, board officials were there. Sabhi ne bola hai (everyone told him). Who won’t tell? If this news comes to you, you are in a shock. But since we had a World T20 to play, we never wanted it to affect team."

"He (Kohli) had his plans and we respect him. If he has taken the decision, and this is what he said in the media also, that from WTC he had been thinking about it... everyone told him to think about it and we thought let’s talk after the World Cup," added the former cricketer.

On Kohli's sacking as ODI captain

On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI skipper, appointing Rohit as the white-ball skipper. This also led to varied responses from all corners, especially as it came only in the form of a tweet from the BCCI and wasn't followed by an official statement or presser. At his presser on December 15, Kohli had admitted that he agreed on the reason given for his sacking, however, revealed that he came to know about the decision only sometime before the official announcement was made.

In this regard, Sharma told, "It was Virat’s decision and nobody actually told him to quit the [T20I] captaincy. But once he quit T20 captaincy, obviously the selectors have to think what our decision is and obviously all selectors think it is one captain for white-ball formats, it becomes easy for selectors to plan things. We informed him regarding this. The 50 overs decision was the selectors’ and T20 captaincy was his decision."

He further asserted, "As soon as selection committee came to the point and discussed it, I immediately called up Virat that afternoon. There was a Test selection coming up. We didn’t want to inform in that selection meeting and that’s why I called him when our meeting was over. And this is what selectors think and there will be one white-ball captain, there were a couple of questions and we had good conversations. He (Kohli) agreed on that. What we discuss I can’t disclose it here and we had a good chat. Most important thing is, Virat is a very important part of Indian cricket. We want him to play for India and keep getting runs, because the team revolves around it."

"When it comes to planning, our thought process was we need one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain. He came at (Test selection) meeting around 5:30 pm and we had informed him before that. It was hard decision for us and we have to take some hard decisions, that’s what we are here for. Same for selection of playing XI. Sometimes those are need of the hour. He is going to be a very important for years to come," the 55-year old added.

Chetan Sharma signed off by saying, "The main goal for everybody is the same: to keep India on top. We don’t want controversies. That is the reason we don’t come out. Our job is to select the team, make sure the best guy goes and plays for the country. When these controversies happen, it makes us sad as cricketers. ODI captaincy row, KL Rahul as future captain: Major talking points from Chetan Sharma's press conference

R Ashwin is currently involved in India's three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation. The 35-year-old was part of India's historic 113-run win over the Dean Elgar-led Proteas at SuperSport Park, Centurion. The off-spinner attained two wickets in the match and will hope to contribute more in the remaining two Tests and lead India to their first-ever series win in the rainbow nation.

Recently, the spin-bowling all-rounder Ashwin recalled a time when people had written him off completely. In 2021, Ashwin made a comeback in the limited-overs setup after four years when he was part of the T20 World Cup and New Zealand T20Is at home. On the last day of 2021, he was also named in India's 18-man squad for the Proteas ODIs. While the offie is now back to featuring in all forms of the game for Team India, he had to struggle for a long time between 2017 to mid-2021; only playing the Tests. Thus, Ashwin recalled the time when criticism from people -- who lost faith in the spinner and wrote him off -- affected him.

"I used to wake up during the pandemic every single day telling myself - it doesn’t matter what people think, but this particular cricketer, this particular character has, has something left. And, this is not how I want to leave. It used to be a hard battle. I used to train twice in a day. I reviewed over 3-10 dietitians. I am definitely eating better, training better and more positive inside my head," Ashwin further said.

Ashwin ended 2021 being the highest-wicket taker in the purest format (54 scalps). Being back in the reckoning in the limited-overs setup, he will now hope to perform in a similar stead in all forms of the game for Team India in 2022.

Packed home season, Asia Cup, T20 WC: A glance at Kohli, Rohit-starrer India's cricketing calendar for 2022

Team India ended 2021 on a glorious note, winning their first-ever Test at Centurion. While the year saw India's dominance in Test cricket, they played only a handful of ODIs but faltered in the shortest format of the game. The year had two ICC tournaments, in the form of WTC final and T20 World Cup, but India failed to win any major title. While their overall run in Tests remained impressive, the Men in Blue fell flat in the T20 WC.

Talking about India's campaign in the 2021 T20 WC, the Virat Kohli-led Indian team lost their opening clash to Pakistan by ten wickets (losing their first-ever game versus the arch-rivals in a World Cup). In their next encounter, the one-time winners India were listless versus Kane Williamson's New Zealand as they lost by 8 wickets to edge closer to elimination. While Kohli & Co. bounced back and won three games in a row, it was too late by then as Pakistan and New Zealand marched to the semi-finals from India's group, i.e. Pool B. Recently, Ravi Shastri opined on India's struggles in the T20 WC, post which his tenure as the head coach came to an end.

"Pakistan played well on that day, and against New Zealand, we were timid. We were very timid. It showed in the game. We were tentative instead of going for the jugular. You never mind losing as long as you're throwing punches. But if you're timid and tentative then it hurts more. And in a tournament like this if you lose too early then you're in trouble," Shastri said on the Bold & Brave The Ravi Shastri Way' show on Star Sports.

Shastri further called for the tournament's format to be like the one witnessed in the 2019 ODI World Cup, which was a round-robin stage with each team playing the other once before the knockouts. The former Indian all-rounder also feels that the playoffs scenario should also be implemented in World Cups. In this regard, he said, "It's not like the format in 2019, where you can play every opposition. I think that is the way to go forward. That format is the best, and then have the Playoffs ideally, if you want to decide the World Cup," explained Shastri."

Since the 2021 T20 WC campaign, a lot has changed in Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain, after the latter resigned from the post with the end of the World Cup, and recently replaced him as the limited-overs captain as well. The year 2022 will see teams compete once again in the eighth edition of the T20 World Cup, which will be held in current champions Australia's backyard. BCCI announced a strong 18-man squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series versus Temba Bavuma-led South Africa on Friday (December 31). The series will take place in early 2022, soon after the conclusion of the ongoing Tests in the African nation.

While all eyes were on Rohit Sharma's fitness, the limited-overs captain will miss the series after being ruled out due to hamstring injury as his deputy KL Rahul will lead the side in his absence. This will be the first time that Rahul will lead the side in a full series. Earlier, he had led Team India in a T20I in New Zealand, during the final innings, and has led the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last two IPL seasons.

KL Rahul named captain for South Africa ODIs as Rohit Sharma ruled out due to hamstring injury

India romped past South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test at SuperSpork Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30) and go 1-0 up in the three-match series. Everything clicked for the visitors from the word go as they went onto win their first-ever Test at Centurion, which was SA's fortress since 2014.

Winning the toss and opting to bat first, Kohli & Co. rode on KL Rahul's 123 to post 327 all-out. In reply, Proteas fell like nine pins to be all-out for 197, courtesy Mohammed Shami's five-fer, to concede a 130-run lead. In their second essay, India managed only 174 but setup a competitive 305-run target for the hosts. On Day 5, Dean Elgar-led Proteas resumed at 94-4 and got dismissed for 191 to lose the clash by 113 runs.

Thus, India are now one step closer to winning their maiden Test series in the African nation. "We’ve spoken about it earlier as well that this series will present plenty of opportunities against South Africa. When India used to tour South Africa earlier, it seemed as if they are travelling to play in very difficult conditions, but now the irrespective of the scenario in South African cricket, India have the bowlers to take 20 wickets. Shami picked five wickets and bowled splendidly in the second innings. Bumrah took crucial wickets on Day 4 evening," Harbhajan said on Sports Tak.

South Africa no match to Team India: Harbhajan backs Virat Kohli & Co. to win maiden Test series in SA

The year 2021 is coming to an end. The calendar year saw plenty of action on the 22-yard cricket strip, especially in the purest format of the gentlemen's game. The year saw New Zealand become the first-ever World Test champions whereas many other riveting series was played out in the longest format of the game.

Many big guns made heads turn with their performances whereas some marquee players fell flat. On the other hand, some new faces made a mark in the toughest form of the game with their efforts on the field. Cricket Australia, thus, shared their Test XI for the year 2021, which featured some big names but the likes of Indian Test captain Virat Kohli and ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah found no place.

Cricket.com.au Test team features as many as four Indians, such as Rohit Sharma, R Ashwin, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel. Rohit ended the year being the second-highest run-getter after Joe Root (1,708 runs). Rohit slammed 2 tons and 4 fifties whereas Pant finished with 748 runs, with 1 hundred and as many as five half-centuries. Ashwin is 2021's leading wicket-taker (54 scalps) whereas spin-bowling all-rounder Axar debuted in whites this year and returned with 36 scalps (second-most by an Indian).

The other players in the list are Sri Lanka's Dimuth Karunaratne (with 902 runs with 4 centuries and 3 fifties), also named the captain. Joe Root, Fawad Alam and Marnus Labuschagne also made the cut. No Kohli or Bumrah! Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant among 4 Indians in Cricket Australia's Test XI of 2021

The calendar year is coming to an end. A lot of action took place in the sporting arena after the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020. Some big-ticket tournaments took place in the 22-yard cricket strip, which tested Team India (the senior men's team) to the core. While India continued to dominate in Tests, despite missing out on the coveted WTC title in the inaugural cycle's finale, they were decent in ODIs but had a forgettable campaign in the T20 World Cup in UAE. Talking about Virat Kohli, the 33-year-old had a rather ordinary calendar year with the end quarter turning into a nightmare.

The superstar cricketer, who remains the poster boy of Indian cricket, finished 2021 without being able to lead India to an ICC title and went on to dent his terms with BCCI and the current selection committee in early December. In addition, the right-hander ended without a hundred in international cricket (with his century drought lasting for over two years).

KING KOHLI BECOMES A PROUD FATHER BEFORE NATIONAL DUTY RESUMES

The year started for Kohli with some needless noise on his much-talked about paternity leave. On January 11, Kohli turned proud father as he welcomed his first child, daughter named Vamika, along with wife Anushka Sharma.

Watching India's glorious run in the Australia Tests Down Under by being miles away, Kohli returned to international cricket to take charge in the home Tests versus England. Losing his first Test of the year versus Joe Root & Co., Kohli inspired India's comeback as the hosts romped past the Englishmen in the remainder of the series to win the four-match series 3-1 and book a place in the WTC final.

Kohli, however, ended the series with 172 runs, including two fifty-plus scores, at an average of 28.66.

India then turned to the five T20Is and three ODIs against the same opposition. Facing a competitive Eoin Morgan-led side, India were tested before they won the series 3-2. The then Indian captain Kohli ended with 231 runs (most runs in bilateral T20Is involving Test-playing nations) to be adjudged the Player-of-the-Series.

In the ODIs, Kohli had two good outings with two fifties, but continued to remain away from triple-figure knocks. He, however, led his troops to a 2-1 series win. He was tested to the core as captain in terms of his bowling changes and field settings throughout the series against the ODI World champions.

IPL AMID COVID-19 SECOND WAVE

The IPL 2021 edition was the next assignment for Kohli. Leading the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the right-hander started the season on a high with back-to-back victories. While RCB did lose the plot to an extend before the COVID-19 second wave halted the tournament, Kohli's numbers with the bat was pretty mediocre with 198 runs at 33 in 7 games. His strike-rate remained below 120 on six outings.

GLORIOUS CHANCE RUINED IN WTC FINAL

The biggest assignment for Kohli, both as captain and batsman, came when he led India to the WTC final versus New Zealand in Southampton in mid-June. While many termed India as the overwhelming favourites, it seemed as if Kohli would finally be able to break the national side's jinx of not being able to win an ICC title since 2013. However, all hopes were dented as his year remained ordinary.

His returns with the bat were 44 and 13 as India lost convincingly by 8 wickets to lose the marquee title. Thus, the team had no choice but to revamp soon as the second cycle commenced with India's five Tests versus England in the United Kingdom, from August 3.

THE HIGHS AGAINST HOSTS ENGLAND

While India rode on KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma's batting performances, Kohli continued to remain below par despite few good innings. He averaged only 31.14 after the series was interrupted due to Covid crisis in Indian camp after the fourth and penultimate Test.

TWO BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS - WHO SAW IT COMING?

The action moved to the second and final leg of IPL 2021, in the UAE. Kohli returned to lead RCB after making two massive announcements.

In mid-September, Kohli announced his decision to step aside as the T20I captain. He tweeted saying, "I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team."

"I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches, and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward."

"Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. After a lot of contemplation and discussions with my close people, Ravi bhai and also Rohit, who have been an essential part of the leadership group, I've decided to step down as the T20 Captain after this T20 World Cup in Dubai in October. I have also spoken to the secretary Mr Jay Shah and the President of BCCI Mr Sourav Ganguly along with all the selectors about the same. I will continue to serve Indian Cricket and the Indian Team to the best of my ability."

Thus, a prolonged dry spell with the bat, bio-bubble restrictions and burden of leading across formats hampered even someone of the statute of King Kohli. It was visible as while his ardent fans always waited for the real Kohli to show up, but he often kept returning with below-par performances as per his standards (For the unversed, vital knocks kept coming from his willow at regular intervals. However, one cannot get content with substandard showings when it comes to the superstar cricketer).

The day IPL 14 resumed, on September 19 in the UAE, Kohli also announced that this will be his last season as RCB captain. He said, "This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. I’ll continue to be an RCB player till I play my last IPL game. I thank all the RCB fans for believing in me and supporting me."

NO IPL TROPHY OR T20 WC HEROICS

Thus, Kohli entered the IPL final leg with his loyalists hoping for him to sign off on a high as captain; winning RCB and his maiden trophy. Nonetheless, it didn't turn out that way as Bengaluru lost in the Eliminator with Kohli ending the season with 405 runs in 14 games at 119.46.

Post the IPL, Kohli moved to the T20 World Cup, which was to be his last assignment as T20I captain. Needless to say, the countrymen hoped for him to take India to the title and also sign off on a fitting note as the captain in the shortest format. However, Kohli endured back-to-back failures as India bowed out in the Super 12 round, also becoming the first Indian captain to lose a WC clash versus the Men in Green.

Kohli's dubious captaincy calls hogged headlines before India's untimely exit. Meanwhile, he finished with 68 runs in 5 games, with a high-score of 57 and not batting at all on two instances.

While Kohli was on a break during India's home T20Is and first Test versus New Zealand, he returned back to action for the second and final Test against the Black Caps. He led India with aplomb as they achieved their biggest win in terms of runs but once again couldn't break his century-drought, returning with 0 and 36. He has four ducks in Tests in 2021 with one more match to go in the calendar year.

BCCI ROW

On December 8, BCCI removed Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit as the limited-overs skipper. While many speculated a rift between the two cricketers, Kohli rubbished all such rumours in an explosive presser before India's departure to South Africa. However, he made some glaring statements, contradicting from the claims made by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly and a board member.

While Ganguly had claimed that he had requested Kohli to keep the top job in T20Is, as captain, Kohli denied all such claims. Moreover, he also stated that he was always available for the SA ODIs, contrary to statements made by BCCI treasurer Arun Dhamal.

Hence, it has now become BCCI vs Kohli as things have continued to go downhill for the 33-year-old batsman. Overall, 2021 has been a mixed bag for Kohli and he will be tested in the new calendar year as well. After all, he has endured more disappointments than spirited highs.

The calendar year is coming to an end. A lot of action took place in the sporting arena after the Covid-19 pandemic wreaked havoc in 2020. Some big-ticket tournaments took place in the 22-yard cricket strip, which tested Team India (the senior men's team) to the core.

ALSO READ | From conquering Aussies Down Under to T20 World Cup debacle: Team India in 2021 KING KOHLI BECOMES A PROUD FATHER BEFORE NATIONAL DUTY RESUMES The year started for Kohli with some needless noise on his much-talked about paternity leave. IPL AMID COVID-19 SECOND WAVE The IPL 2021 edition was the next assignment for Kohli. GLORIOUS CHANCE RUINED IN WTC FINAL The biggest assignment for Kohli, both as captain and batsman, came when he led India to the WTC final versus New Zealand in Southampton in mid-June. THE HIGHS AGAINST HOSTS ENGLAND While India rode on KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma's batting performances, Kohli continued to remain below par despite few good innings. He averaged only 31.14 after the series was interrupted due to Covid crisis in Indian camp after the fourth and penultimate Test. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team." "I couldn't have done it without them - the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches, and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win. Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI Cricket. I have given everything to the Team during my time as T20 Captain and I will continue to do so for the T20 Team as a batsman moving forward." "Of course, arriving at this decision took a lot of time. However, one cannot get content with substandard showings when it comes to the superstar cricketer). The day IPL 14 resumed, on September 19 in the UAE, Kohli also announced that this will be his last season as RCB captain. He said, "This will be my last IPL as captain of RCB. Team India by far the best in the world: Former SA pacer lauds Virat Kohli & Co. post Centurion Test win

Virat Kohli-led India won the Centurion Test versus South Africa by 113 runs to go 1-0 up in the three-match series in the African nation on Thursday (December 30). Team India also ended their calendar year on an emphatic note with their maiden Test win at Centurion, where the Proteas hadn't lost since 2014.

Talking about the series opener at SuperSpork Park, Centurion, India won the toss and rode on opener KL Rahul's 123 to post 327 all-out. In reply, South Africa folded for 197 as Mohammed Shami returned with a five-fer. While India collapsed for 174, they managed to setup a competitive 305-run target for the hosts. On Day 5, Dean Elgar-led SA resumed at 94-4 and were soon folded for 191; losing the clash by 113 runs.

Thus, this became India's fourth Test victory on South African soil and the first at Centurion. As India are now on the cusp of winning their maiden Test series in the rainbow nation, the Team India players were in celebratory mode after the win. Hence, Captain Kohli shook a leg with the resort staff on Indian players' return to the hotel post the historic win. Here's the video shared on BCCI's official Twitter handle:

Watch: Virat Kohli dances with resort staff as India cap off 2021 with historic Centurion Test win

On Thursday (December 30), South Africa's keeper-batsman Quinton De Kock announced his decision to retire from Test cricket. The move left many shocked as the 29-year-old batter remains one of the key players for the Proteas across formats. Amassing 3300 runs at 38.82 in 54 Tests, de Kock decided to step aside from the red-ball format to spend more time with his growing family.

De Kock's move drew parallels with MS Dhoni, who had also shocked one and all with his sudden Test retirement decision on December 30, 2014. The former Indian captain shared his decision post India's 2014/15 Boxing Day Test versus Australia at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Melbourne. With India having already lost the series 2-0 after the drawn Test in Melbourne, with a encounter to go in the four-match series, Dhoni decided to call it quits.

THROWBACK: When MS Dhoni shocked one and all with sudden retirement from Test cricket in 2014

Team India beat South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test, of the three-match series, in their 2021/22 tour of the African nation. With this win, India achieved only their fourth Test victory in South Africa and their first at Centurion (SA's fortress since 2014). Earlier in the year, India had breached Australia's 32-year-long fortress, i.e. at The Gabba, Brisbane.

Thus, India had a glorious run in the longest format of the game in 2021. In the year, India came from behind and without many key players to beat Australia in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under (their second Test series triumph in Australia in a row), beat England and New Zealand at home (3-1 and 1-0 respectively) and also achieved an unassailable 2-1 lead over Joe Root & Co. in the incomplete five Tests in the United Kingdom.

The only blip in India's Test run in 2021 came during the WTC final, where Kohli & Co. lost the coveted title by 8 wickets. Hence, the 33-year-old Indian Test captain reviewed India's year in Tests with great pride.

"New Year is a very good time to look back and analyse how you played your cricket. And I think we played some outstanding cricket, not just this year, but over the last two three years, especially overseas. We are a side who are getting better and gaining more confidence with how much cricket we play. It feels amazing to be 1-0 up. Sets up wonderfully for the Wanderers," Kohli said on BCCI.tv.

"Test series in South Africa or in any place is not easy and Centurion is obviously the most difficult of them all. We ended up getting a result within four days which is a testimony to the fact that we have become the side which we are today and the strength of the squad was on full display. We were just looking for opportunities to win the game. That's how we play our cricket now. And given an opportunity at any given stage we will bounce back. It is a beautiful position to be in, to be 1-0 up away from home with the opposition under pressure in the second Test as well is a golden opportunity and I'm absolutely certain that all the players will be looking forward to it and we can wait for Jo'burg," he added.

The No. 1 ranked Indian Test team will now look to move ahead in a similar stead in the next year and hope to start 2022 with a bang by winning the second and penultimate Test versus Proteas; claiming their maiden Test series win in the African nation.

The second Test starts on January 3 at The Wanderers, Johannesburg.

Team India beat South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test, of the three-match series, in their 2021/22 tour of the African nation. With this win, India achieved only their fourth Test victory in South Africa and their first at Centurion (SA's fortress since 2014).

We played some outstanding cricket: Virat Kohli looks back at India's glorious Test run in 2021

India romped past South Africa by 113 runs to win the first Test at SuperSpork Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30). Setting up a target of 305 runs, Virat Kohli-led India had accounted for 4 wickets of the Proteas in the final innings at stumps on Day 4 and wrapped up the proceedings in the second session of the final day on Thursday.

With this, India achieved their first-ever Test win at Centurion, a venue where South Africa were unbeaten since 2014. Thus, Kohli & Co. have taken a 1-0 lead and will be aiming to win their maiden Test series in the African nation when the second and penultimate Test commences on January 3, at The Wanderers, Johannesburg.

Talking about the Centurion Test win, KL Rahul's 123 and Mayank Agarwal's 60 (both in the first innings) were the top-performers for India with the bat whereas the seamers led the charge with the red cherry. Jasprit Bumrah ended with five scalps in the mach, Mohammed Shami finished with an eight-wicket haul whereas Mohammed Siraj accounted for three wickets and Shardul Thakur took two wickets in the entire contest (taking 18 out of the 20 Proteas scalps). The likes of Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav warmed the bench; depicting the solid bench strength of the Indian pace battery at present.

After the Centurion Test, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra, in a video on his YouTube channel, reserved the title of 'special' for Bumrah. However, when it came to naming the No. 1 speedster in the Indian team taking all venues into account in whites, the former opener picked Shami.

"You look at Bumrah because he's special. But if we equalize every condition, India's number one Test pacer is Mohammad Shami, especially at this point in time. He asks questions with the delivery of his. He took five wickets against this team in Vishakhapatnam as well and now he took a fifer at Centurion," Chopra explained.

"We saw sideways movement from Ngidi, Rabada's pace and saw Bumrah's magic. But what about Shami? Shami doesn't bowl a magic delivery like Bumrah does. But he bowls on dangerous areas consistently and releases the ball with so close to the stumps. Who bowled the most deliveries on fourth stump? Who bowled the maximum deliveries that were hitting on top of off? - It was sensational Shami," he added.

"Jasprit Bumrah is a national asset. He's a treasure. We are so fortunate that our fast bowling unit has matured together. Bumrah took important wickets at important phases of the game. He set the tone by dismissing Dean Elgar in the very first over (first innings). Then, on Day 4 when there was a partnership building up for South Africa, he bowled a magical ball to van der Dussen. Then Keshav Maharaj came to the crease, and mind you, he bats well."

"Bumrah wonderfully bowled a yorker to dismiss him. He then took Elgar out again but with a different kind of a delivery. I mean he (Bumrah) is brilliant, man," the former cricketer opined.

India will now shift their focus to winning the second Test and claim their first-ever series on African soil. In 2006/07 tour of SA, India had taken a 1-0 lead under current head coach Rahul Dravid, however, lost the plot from thereon to lose 2-1. Hence, the national side will be eager for history to not repeat itself this time around.

Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami or Mohammed Siraj? Aakash Chopra names India's No. 1 pacer in Tests

Harbhajan Singh, on December 24, drew curtains to an illustrious 23-year-long international career. The wily off-spinner was part of some of India's memorable wins, such as the 2001 home Tests versus Australia, 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, etc.

Harbhajan, known as The Turbanator, ended his international career with 417 Test scalps (fourth-most among Indians), 269 ODI dismissals and 25 wickets in the shortest format. Despite being part of the victorious 2011 ODI World Cup campaign, Bhajji's career never got any mileage from thereon (mainly due to R Ashwin's emergence). As a result, he only represented India in a handful of games (10 Tests and ODIs each) after the showpiece event. He wasn't part of 2013 Champions Trophy and 2015 ODI World Cup and warmed the bench throughout India's 2016 T20 WC campaign.

Hence, Bhajji inquired about his sudden omission from the national side by questioning then captain MS Dhoni but to no use, claimed the former spinner recently.

'Tried to ask MS Dhoni but got no reason ' - Harbhajan opens up on his sudden omission from Team India

Virat Kohli-led Team India beat South Africa by a whopping 113-run margin at the SuperSport Park, Centurion on Thursday (December 30). Resuming the fifth day with only 6 wickets needed to win, India wrapped up the proceedings in style. Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami continued to chip in with regular wickets before R Ashwin joined the party and claimed the last two scalps after lunch.

The fifth day started with the Dean Elgar-led Proteas needing 211 more runs to win, after they ended Day 4 at 94-4 in pursuit of 305. Captain Elgar was trapped lbw for 77 by Bumrah before Quinton de Kock-Temba Bavuma steadied the ship for a while. As soon as De Kock chopped one onto the stumps, for the second time in a row, the collapse started for the home side who fell for 191 in 68 overs.

Talking about the first Test, Kohli-led India won the toss and rode on opener KL Rahul's 123 to post a competitive 327. In reply, SA only managed a paltry 197 as they conceded a whopping 130-run lead to Team India. Riding on their massive lead, India accelerated but only managed 174 in their second essay, setting up a 305-run target. Nonetheless, Bumrah and Shami's three-fers, Siraj and Ashwin's two wickets apiece ended the Proteas resistance for 191 on the final day. In SA's first innings, Shami had dented the hosts' progress with a stunning five-fer.

1st Test: India beat South Africa by 113 runs to go 1-0 up, achieve maiden win at Centurion

Virat Kohli ended the year 2021 with the bat, on Wednesday (December 29), without scoring any international century. The right-hander's dry spell has continued for another year as it became the second successive calendar year where he ended without a triple-figure knock.

After falling for 35 in the first innings of India's first Test versus South Africa, at SuperSpork Park, Centurion, Kohli came out to bat with a positive intent in the side's second essay, after their 130-run first-innings lead. Nonetheless, the 33-year-old fell for, in a similar fashion by chasing a delivery outside off-stump. Thus, batting coach Vikram Rathour has opened up on Kohli's knack of throwing his wicket by playing the deliveries on outside-off lines.

Rathour also addressed India's senior pros Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's poor returns with the bat. "Pujara in past has played some important innings for us, you see these are challenging conditions, not many people have scored runs here. We need to be patient as long as they are trying their best, giving their best as a coaching unit we are fine. Are we getting impatient? Not at this stage, I think,” he said.

7-0: A look at India's woeful Test record in South Africa

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes the captain and the head coach of the side should have a say in the team selection. Shastri served as the head coach of the Indian cricket team for four years from 2017 to 2021. He along with captain Virat Kohli took the team to greater hieghts and made India a force to reckon with across formats.

Shastri, who has previously stated that he has had no say in a lot of selection matters during his coaching stint with the Indian team, has stressed the importance of the coach and captain having a say in the selection. Shastri feels it is extremely important for that to happen going forward.

"I think it is extremely important for the coach and the captain to have a say in the team selection, officially going forward. It is very important especially if the coach is experienced enough. I was, Rahul (Dravid is) and the captain should also have a say,” Ravi Shastri said on Star Sports.

In one of his recent interviews, Shastri had opened up on India's poor selection calls in the build-up to the 2019 ODI World Cup. Shastri had revealed he would have liked to have Ambati Rayudu or Shreyas Iyer in the squad instead of having as many as three wicket-keepers.

Indian captain Virat Kohli failed to bring an end to his century drought in 2021 as he was dismissed on a low-key score of 18 off 32 balls in India's second innings of the ongoing first Test against South Africa on Wednesday. Kohli looked disappointed in the dressing room as he watched the replays of his dismissal.

After scoring 35 runs in the first innings, Kohli was expected to notch up a big score in the second innings when he came out to bat at no.5 in the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. He looked composed in the middle and was looking in fine form before making a costly mistake against Marco Jansen.

In what was the exact replica of his dismissal against Lungi Ngidi in the first innings, Kohli once again went for a wider delivery and ended up getting caught at the slip after an edge. Jansen bowled one quite outside off post lunch and Kohli went after it.

It was a thick edge off his bat and South Africa keeper Quinton de Kock was quick to grab the catch as the Indian captain was dismissed on 18 off 32 balls. Kohli looked dejected as he walked back to the dressing room after getting dismissed. The 18-run-knock meant the Indian captain has now gone another year without a century across formats.

Virat Kohli ends 2021 without a century as Indian captain departs on 18 in Centurion Test vs South Africa

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami ran through the South Africa batting line-up in the onging first Test between the two sides in Centurion on Tuesday to reach the milestone of 200 Test wickets. Shami picked up a five-wicket haul in South Africa's first innings and finished with excellent figures of 5/44 in his 16 overs.

He became only the fifth Indian fast bowler to reach the milestone of 200 wickets in Tests having achieved the feat in 55 Test matches. Shami recalled his struggles and the hardships his family went through to make him the successful cricketer that he is today. Shami, who hails from a remote village in the Amroha district of Uttar Pradesh, recalled how his father would cycle 30kms every day to take him to a coaching camp.

Shami has been one of the consistent performer for India across formats over the last few years and has been a prolific wicket-taker for the team. The right-arm fast bowler recalled how it was not easy for him to make it big in cricket and how his father played a massive role in his rise.

"My father has made me what I am today. I come from a village where there aren't many facilities and even today there aren't all facilities available. Even then, my father would cycle me 30 km to take me at coaching camp and that struggle I still remember. In those days and those situations, they invested in me and I am forever grateful," Shami said after reaching the milestone of 200 Test wickets on Tuesday.

"All you can do is work hard and if you work hard you are bound to get results," he added.

Ind vs SA, 1st Test: Md Shami joins elite list of Indian pacers with 200 wickets during Day 3 in Centurion

Indian pacers ran riot against South Africa in the first innings of the ongoing Boxing Day Test between the two sides in Centurion on Tuesday. After the second day's play was called off due to rain, India's batting unit collapsed in the first session on Day 3. Nonetheless, the visitors still managed to put on a strong total of 327 runs on the board.

The bowlers then wreaked havoc on South Africa to get the visitors off to a good start with the ball. The Indian pacers made South African batsmen dance to their tunes in the second session on Day 3. Jasprit Bumrah got India their first breakthrough by dismissing Dean Elgar cheaply on just 1 before Mohammed Shami removed Keegan Petersen and Aiden Markram in quick succession.

Mohammed Siraj then got the wicket of Rassie van der Dussen post lunch to open his account in the Centurion Test. Siraj got Van der Dussen caught at gully before pulling off Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'Siii' celebration. Siraj jumped in the air and did Ronaldo's celebration which caught the eyes of many on social media.

Manchester United superstar Ronaldo has been doing the popular celebration since his Real Madrid days and it is quite popular among football fans across the globe. Ronaldo is often spotted doing the same celebration after scoring a goal for United. While Siraj's attempt at copying the football legend was not perfect, it did impress fans.

Team India posted 327 in the first innings of the ongoing Centurion Test versus South Africa in the Boxing Day encounter in the African nation. After Day 1 ended with India 272-3, the rest of the batting line-up didn't stand tall on Day 3 -- with the second day's play being washed out -- as the visitors fell for 327.

While KL Rahul top-scored with 123, Mayank Agarwal (60), Captain Virat Kohli (35) and Ajinkya Rahane (48) contributed as well. However, No. 3 batter Cheteshwar Pujara didn't impress as he fell for a golden duck. This was Pujara's second golden duck and third instance of not being able to open his account in the calendar year. In addition, his last international ton (i.e. in Tests as he only plays the purest format) came in early 2019. Hence, the right-hander is facing the heat due to ordinary performances with the bat.

Now, former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal has opened up on Pujara's struggles and feels India have plenty of players to replace him, in the form of Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Shubman Gill, etc. "Pujara is struggling. There is no two ways about it. There are players in the squad who can push him out of the XI. At No. 3, even the captain needs a player you can hold the innings and get some runs at the same time. At times, Pujara gets stuck way too much. So clearly, he is struggling," Lal said on India Today.

Recently, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt also called for Pujara's omission if he continues to under-perform once Rohit Sharma returns to the Test line-up. Butt told on his Youtube channel, "He (Pujara) is not in form now. So you have to replace him when Rohit Sharma returns because you cannot drop an in-form player. And I was never in favour of that move. They left out Shreyas Iyer despite that performance (against New Zealand). India have always backed their senior players, which is good, but Pujara needs to score runs."

Pujara will look to score runs in India's second essay in the first Test and the remainder of the series to hold onto his spot amid widespread criticism.
