The Indian men's cricket team has moved on from the Virat Kohli-Ravi Shastri era. After Shastri's tenure ended with the T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid took over and is now serving as the head coach till the 2023 ODI World Cup. On the other hand, BCCI recently sacked Kohli as the ODI captain, appointing Rohit Sharma as the new limited-overs skipper.

Ahead of India's tour-opener versus South Africa in Centurion, on December 26, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has made a big claim on the partnership of Kohli-Dravid, who are the captain-coach in the Test format for the national side.

By now, all the cricket fans are well aware of the rusty relations between Kohli and the BCCI post the ODI captaincy switch. After being sacked as the ODI skipper, the 33-year-old Kohli contradicted from BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly's claims, who had earlier stated that he had advised the former to continue as the T20I captain. Kohli also revealed that he had no prior communication with the national selectors before his sacking. Hence, the Indian Test captain's relations with Ganguly has gone down. In 2017, he had a fallout with then head coach Anil Kumble as well. Hence, Kaneria feels his relations with Dravid might also not be good in the long run.

"It's been two years, Virat has not made any century, so he needs to focus on his game. Speaking against legends like Sourav Ganguly and anyone else is not going to help him," Kaneria told IANS in an interview.

He further asserted, "Virat had problems with Anil Kumble, now he has problems with Ganguly. Kumble and Ganguly have proved themselves; they are the real ambassadors of the game. Virat is speaking against Ganguly who has changed Indian cricket and then MS Dhoni took it forward. Now Virat's 90-minute jibe is really not needed at this time."

"He is struggling to make runs in Tests and T20s. And as a captain, he has not won any ICC trophy, so everything is going against him. And now this blame game, I don't think this is going to help him as well as Indian cricket," Kaneria further explained.

Kaneria added, "As far as Rohit Sharma is concerned, he's been an outstanding ambassador of the game; he has won five IPL trophies. His captaincy is impeccable; his camaraderie with Rahul Dravid is amazing. I don't think Virat Kohli's relation with Dravid will be good in the long run. Virat had a problem with Anil Kumble as well. Both Kumble and Dravid are coming from South India and they have big status in cricket. I played against both of them, and I know what kind of intellectuals they are."

It will be interesting to see how the relation&nbsp;between Kohli and Dravid will pan out going forward. At present, the Dravid-Kohli-led Indian team is gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus Dean Elgar-led South Africa, in Centurion, on Sunday (December 26).

Harbhajan shared a video along with his tweet and explained, "My journey from the streets of Jalandhar to the Indian team has been spectacular. I have never had the sort of motivation that I did when I was wearing the India jersey. But there comes a time when you have to take the tough decisions and move ahead. I have been willing to make an announcement for the past few years and have been waiting to share this moment with you.

Today, I am announcing my retirement from all forms of the game. Though informally, I had taken retirement before but couldn't announce it. I have not been playing active cricket for a while but due to commitments with KKR, I have wanted to stay with them. I had already decided to retire. Like every other cricketer, I wanted to say goodbye to this game in the Indian jersy but fate probably had something else in mind.

Whichever team I have played for, I have tried to help them finish at the top, be it Indian team, KKR, MI, CSK or the county sides."

Harbhajan ended as India's fourth-highest wicket-taker in Tests (417), also being the first-ever Indian to claim a hat-trick in the longest form of the game. In the white-ball formats, he accounted for 269 ODI and 25 T20I scalps. He was part of the national side's memorable 2007 T20 World Cup win and 2011 ODI World Cup triumph. He also played an integral role in India achieving the No. 1 rank for the first time in Test cricket in late 2009, under MS Dhoni's leadership.&nbsp;

Harbhajan also ended with 4 IPL trophies, playing for Mumbai Indians (MI), Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Overall, he featured in 163 IPL matches, ending with 150 wickets (fifth overall).

Harbhajan Singh retires, draws curtains to glorious 23-year-long international career

Former Indian team head coach Ravi Shastri has reacted to the number of developments that have taken place in the senior men's cricket team post the end of his tenure. Post his exit, he has been succeeded by Rahul Dravid whereas Virat Kohli recently got removed as the ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma replacing him as the limited-overs skipper.

For the unversed, Rohit had already succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain post the World Cup in the UAE. In mid-September, the 33-year-old Kohli had revealed that the mega event in the UAE will be his last assignment as the T20I skipper. Thus, Shastri has opened up on Rohit taking over as the white-ball captain and the ODI captaincy row, created due to contrasting statements from Kohli and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly.&nbsp;

'Once Virat Kohli said....' - Shastri reacts to Rohit Sharma's appointment as India's limited-overs captain

India beat Australia in the four Tests during their 2018/19 tour Down Under to win their first-ever series in whites in Aussies' backyard. During the series, the likes of Cheteshwar Pujara, Mayank Agarwal, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah led the charge for India's historic win whereas the likes of Ishant Sharma, Captain Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav also played their parts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Back then, Ashwin accounted for six scalps in the series opener in Adelaide before injury ruled him out of action for the remainder of the Tests. Kuldeep featured in the last Test, in Sydney, and returned with a five-fer to earn words of praise from then head coach Ravi Shastri. At that time, Shastri labelled Kuldeep as India's best 'overseas spinner'.

Ashwin recalled Shastri's words, which 'absolutely crushed' him while he watched the proceedings from the sidelines due to injury concerns.

Ashwin recently reacted to Shastri's remark and told in an interview with The&nbsp;Cricket Monthly, "I hold Ravi bhai in high esteem. We all do. In that moment, though, I felt crushed. Absolutely crushed. We all talk about how important it is to enjoy your team-mates' success. And I was happy for Kuldeep. I have not been able to get a five-for but he has a five-for in Australia. I know how big it is. Even when I have bowled well [at other times], I haven't ended up with a five-for. So I am genuinely happy for him. And it's an extremely happy occasion, to win in Australia."

"But if I have to come and partake in his happiness, and the success of the team, I must feel like I belong there. If I feel like I am being thrown under the bus, how am I supposed to get up and come for a party to enjoy the team's or team-mate's success? I went back to my room and then I spoke to my wife. And my children were there. So we were able to, you know, shrug it off, and I still made it to the party, because, end of the day, we had won a massive series," he added.

Now, Shastri has reacted to Ashwin's statements and told the Indian Express, "Ashwin did not play the Test in Sydney and Kuldeep bowled well. So it's fair I give Kuldeep a chance. If that hurt Ashwin, I am very happy. It made him do something different. My job is not to butter everyone’s toast. My job is to state facts without agenda."

My job isn't to butter everyone’s toast: Ravi Shastri recalls his praise for Kuldeep which 'crushed' R Ashwin

Team India are set to commence their tour of South Africa with the first Test to get underway on December 26 in Centurion. Ahead of the three-match Test series, former SA speedster Allan Donald has lavished praise on Kohli-led Indian team and expects a bumper contest between both sides in the forthcoming series in the African nation.&nbsp;

Despite not having the likes of Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill, Indian team is strong enough to challenge the Dean Elgar-led side in their own backyard. The No. 1 ranked Indian team will also be eager to win their first-ever series in whites in South Africa, after losing closely (2-1) during the 2018 tour.

Donald believes India have been very good while being on the road and can pose a serious threat to the Proteas. "There is no doubt this is one of the marquee series in the world game and we can look forward to an incredible battle over the summer," Donald was quoted as saying by cricket.co.za.

He added, "Kohli's comments a few years ago were that you'll never be classed as a great side if you don't win away from home and that has been something he really worked towards. You saw them win in Australia and also reach the WTC (World Test Championship) Final. This is a quality Indian team that is here. I'm looking forward to it."

Donald pointed out, "Both teams line up really well, both have strong bowling line-ups and that will mean the batting on both sides will be tested. Our batting has lost some key players in the last couple of seasons. There's no hiding from the fact that it’s a young line-up and they will be tested by the Indian attack."

"For me that is where the series will be decided. In the last few seasons, we haven't scored enough runs and that will be the challenge. If we can put the runs on the board, we undoubtedly have the bowlers who can take 20 wickets. There is a really good balance to our attack, and it will be interesting to watch."

Recently, Kohli had recalled India's 2018 Tests versus SA and said, "South Africa was really the start for us as a team, travelling and starting to belief we can win series overseas. We built it up nicely in England, and Australia was an accumulation of all those efforts."

It will be interesting to see if India can achieve their first-ever Test series in South Africa. They are coming to the African nation on the back of two historic series wins in Australia, reaching the inaugural WTC final and taking an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests held in the United Kingdom early this year.&nbsp;

For India to do well, the likes of Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammed Shami will have to be on their toes and perform in all cylinders.

We built it up nicely in England, and Australia was an accumulation of all those efforts." It will be interesting to see if India can achieve their first-ever Test series in South Africa. They are coming to the African nation on the back of two historic series wins in Australia, reaching the inaugural WTC final and taking an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests held in the United Kingdom early this year. For India to do well, the likes of Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, R Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammed Shami will have to be on their toes and perform in all cylinders.

Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has joined the bandwagon and reacted to the Virat Kohli vs BCCI ODI captaincy row. Ever since the BCCI announced that Kohli has been removed as the ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma being appointed as the limited-overs skipper, things went out of hand in a flash.

While Kohli rubbished rumours of any rift with Rohit in a press conference, before India's departure for South Africa, he claimed that BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had no word with him to reconsider quitting as T20I captain (contrary to Ganguly's claims) and even stressed&nbsp;that he had no prior communication with the selectors being his sacking as ODI skipper. In addition, the 33-year-old Kohli said that he was always available for the upcoming SA ODIs, in the African nation, contradicting a claim made by a board member. Hence, it has been Kohli vs BCCI since then.

Now, Manjrekar has also reacted to the unfortunate turn of events and feels that Ganguly shouldn't have made any statement on behalf of the selectors post Kohli's removal as ODI captain. The BCCI President had said that he had advised Kohli to retain the top job in T20Is before the latter completely contradicted from his remark.

Virat Kohli vs BCCI: Don't know why there was any statement by Sourav Ganguly, says Sanjay Manjrekar

A lot has transpired in Indian cricket recently. Following Virat Kohli's sacking as the ODI captain, with Rohit Sharma being named as the limited-overs skipper, the 33-year-old Kohli's explosive presser before India's departure for South Africa left many shellshocked.

Kohli denied being asked by Sourav Ganguly to reconsider his decision of quitting as T20I captain and even told that he had no prior communication with the board or selectors being his sacking as 50-overs skipper. In addition, he rubbished claims made by a board member that he was willing to skip the SA ODIs due to personal reasons. Hence, Kohli vs BCCI row has been much-talked about in recent times.

Former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi has opened up on the entire controversy and feels it could've been handled in a better way.

India is gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus South Africa, which gets underway on December 26 in Centurion. Ahead of the series, Virat Kohli-led Indian team have had several injury concerns with the likes of Rohit Sharma (newly-appointed vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel being ruled out.

Thus, Kohli &amp; Co. will have to be on their toes to get the better of Dean Elgar &amp; Co. and attain their first-ever Test series win on South African soil. With no Rohit Sharma, there will be pressure on Virat Kohli, reckons former SA spinner ahead of Centurion Test

Virat Kohli-led India is in South Africa and are gearing up for the three-match Test series opener versus the Proteas, starting on December 26 in Centurion. Before the national side left for SA, Indian cricket saw a new controversy take place after Rohit Sharma became the limited-overs captain, with BCCI sacking Kohli as the ODI skipper.

After Kohli lost ODI captaincy, having already resigned as the T20I captain, his explosive press conference left many stunned. During the presser, he denied being asked by the BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly to reconsider his decision of stepping aside as the T20I skipper (as selectors were reportedly keen on having only one leader in white-ball formats) and also stated that he didn't have any prior communication with the selectors before being sacked as captain in the 50-over format.

Speaking about the whole incident to&nbsp;Khaleej Times, former cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar has slammed Ganguly and said that he had no business to speak on behalf of the selectors.&nbsp;

After Kohli's presser, Ganguly had made it clear that BCCI won't comment any further on the matter for the time being. At present, India is on South Africa tour and more outside noise -- due to the captaincy change row -- will dent the national side's chances of winning the upcoming three Tests and equal number of ODIs in the rainbow nation.

The onus, however, will remain on Kohli who will have to perform in all cylinders as his terms with the BCCI is far from ideal in the present scenario.

Ganguly had no business to speak on behalf of selection committee: Vengsarkar on BCCI-Kohli captaincy row

Ever since the BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain, sacking Virat Kohli as the 50-over skipper, there has been a huge outrage in world cricket. While many thought things might not be at its best between Hitman and Kohli, the latter cleared the air in an explosive presser ahead of India's departure for South Africa.

While many have reacted to Kohli's statements, where he has openly denied having any prior communication before being removed as ODI captain and also of not having been told to reconsider quitting as T20I captain by BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly, former India pacer Atul Wassan has claimed that it must have been the board's decision to remove Kohli as the ODI captain and not the selectors'.

Wassan told on CNN News 18, "I think Virat wanted to carry on till the 2023 World Cup, and they have done well in one-day cricket. We have not won any big trophy but generally we have done well. He is the premium one-day batter in the world. It could have been handled better and there was no need to jump to an immediate reaction."

He further asserted, "Unless the board wants to send out a signal, that 'Virat… ok, enough is enough. You are not doing well and we haven't won much, so this is a penalty’. That's what happened. It is not the selectors' call; it is the board's decision."

"It's a culmination of many things, and the biggest factor is Virat's form. That has contributed. If Virat was doing well and even if India did not win, nobody would have touched him, and also Ravi Shastri's moving out. They worked really well. With Ravi Shastri going out and a new style of thinking coming in… Rahul Dravid is a no-nonsense guy. He would call it right away. And probably that rankling of what happened with Anil Kumble as well."

"All these things got piled up to point where people said, ‘alright, let us look forward’. Virat would feel that he has been hard done by. A collective thought must have circulated among the top brass. They must have thought that this is the right time to clip Kohli's wings so that he isn't allowed to what he likes, and especially with Ravi no longer being there," added Wassan.

2021 hasn't been very kind to Kohli. While he hasn't been able to break his century-drought, he couldn't even lead India to an ICC title in the WTC final as well as in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Moreover, he also lost captaincy in the white-ball formats and will now look to start afresh in the upcoming three Tests between India and South Africa in the African nation, starting on December 26 in Centurion.

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia and also have an unassailable lead in the five-match series against England in the United Kingdom. Hence, the 33-year-old will now look to lead India to their maiden series win in whites on South African soil and silence the outside noise, being against him in the aftermath of the ODI captaincy row.&nbsp;

We have not won any big trophy but generally we have done well. He is the premium one-day batter in the world. It could have been handled better and there was no need to jump to an immediate reaction." He further asserted, "Unless the board wants to send out a signal, that 'Virat… ok, enough is enough. You are not doing well and we haven't won much, so this is a penalty’. That's what happened. It is not the selectors' call; it is the board's decision." "It's a culmination of many things, and the biggest factor is Virat's form. And probably that rankling of what happened with Anil Kumble as well." "All these things got piled up to point where people said, ‘alright, let us look forward’. Not the selectors' call: Former India pacer feels BCCI was behind Virat Kohli being sacked as ODI captain

R Ashwin recently reacted to former Team India head coach Ravi Shastri's words of praise for Kuldeep Yadav during the 2018/19 Australia tour. Back then, Ashwin had played a key role in India's 31-run win over Tim Paine-led Aussies in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, in Adelaide, with 6 scalps in the match. However, injury ruled him out of the remainder of the series as Kuldeep got a chance in the final Test, in Sydney.

Impressing one and all, Kuldeep achieved a five-fer in the drawn fourth and final Test; a feat not yet achieved by Ashwin in Australia. Thus, then head coach Ravi Shastri had labelled Kuldeep as India's No. 1 overseas spinner.&nbsp;

While at times you need to say these things to give confidence to a player, you need to ensure you don't disrespect other members of the team. Ashwin must be disappointed. You cannot have different treatments for different players."

At present, Ashwin is gearing up for India's upcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation, starting from December 26 in Centurion. The 35-year-old wily off-spinner, who warmed the bench during the England Tests in the United Kingdom, will be eager to contribute with both bat and ball and guide India to their first-ever Test series win in the rainbow nation.&nbsp;

'Difficult to maintain....' - Former Indian cricketers react to R Ashwin's remark on Ravi Shastri

A lot has transpired in Indian cricket recently. Following Rohit Sharma's appointment as the ODI captain, replacing Virat Kohli, there was a lot of noise in the cricketing fraternity. Kohli addressed the media in a press conference before the team's departure for South Africa and rubbished rift rumours with Hitman. However, he contradicted from BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly's claims saying that the latter had never asked him to reconsider quitting as T20I captain.

Further, Kohli also told that he had no prior communication with the board members or selectors before his sacking as ODI skipper. In addition, he said that he was always available for the SA ODIs, contrary to the claims by a board member. Hence, former Indian cricketer and ex-selector Kirti Azad has opened up on the whole controversy.&nbsp;

Azad, the 1983 World Cup-winning member, reflected on his days as a national selector during the infamous Greg Chappell-Ganguly episode and feels the current BCCI President should've handled the captaincy row in a better way.&nbsp;

"I remember I had defended him when Greg Chappell was coach and he was dropped as captain. He should have learnt from his own example and spoken to Virat much earlier. I am not saying Virat is a special case. Yes, he is a special batter and a special cricketer. He leads by example," he further added.

In this regard, Azad feels BCCI could have been more professional and should've ideally communicated with Kohli as all the rift rumours with Rohit and his current rusty term with the board could've been easily avoided. These things should not come out in the public and a captain who has given so much, Virat Kohli, should have been informed well in advance," the 1983 WC winner&nbsp;opined.

Sourav Ganguly should've learnt from Greg Chappell episode: Ex-selector on BCCI-Virat Kohli row

There has been a lot happening in Indian cricket at present. Before the South Africa tour, the BCCI named Rohit Sharma as Team India's limited-overs captain. While Hitman had already succeeded Virat Kohli as the T20I captain -- post the latter's resignation -- Rohit took over from Kohli in ODIs as the selectors went ahead with only one captain in white-ball formats.

While many speculated things weren't ideal between Rohit and Kohli post the ODI captaincy switch, Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference before the SA tour and contradicted from BCCI's claims; i.e. regarding T20I captaincy resignation, or whether he had prior communication before his ODI captaincy sacking and if he was willing to skip the SA ODIs. Thus, things aren't at its best between Kohli and the Indian cricket board.

In a video on his YouTube channel, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra feels that discussions should've taken place between the concerned parties before the ODI captaincy change took place.

"It could have definitely been handled better, let's be very very honest. There are a lot of things which could have been better where they could have asked or had a discussion. You don't actually need to ask when you are removing someone as a captain. You just need to tell but it could have been handled a little better, that you acknowledge that the captain has done very well but now you are moving ahead and all of that. That communication could have happened," Chopra opined.

He further also suggested that Kohli could've spoken to the board members or selectors to clear the air regarding his availability for the SA ODIs, when news were circulating that he is willing to skip the series (also stated by a board member). 'Virat Kohli could've picked up the phone...' - Aakash Chopra opines on Team India's ODI captaincy row

Fans are all set to take a trip down memory lane when Ranveer Singh-starrer 83 hits the theatres on (Saturday) December 24. The film traces the story of India's unforgettable maiden cricket World Cup triumph in 1983 when the Kapil Dev-led side beat the mighty West Indies in the final at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground to script history.

The hype surrounding the film is unreal with fans eagerly looking forward to witnessing Ranveer turn reel Kapil Dev. One of the major highlights of the film ahead of its release has been the near-perfect portrayal of the members of the 1983 World Cup-winning side by each of the actors.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/bollywood/news-_3-review-ranveer-singh-and-his-men-smash-it-out-of-the-park-with-this-glorious-chapter-of-history-438606"> Read WION's review of '83' here</a>

The entire cast has gotten into the skin of their respective characters and the lesser-known anecdotes from India's journey to their maiden World Cup crown have been portrayed to perfection in the much-awaited film. Despite the victory being&nbsp;one of the biggest in India's cricketing history, it had not been documented well in the past.

However, 83 looks set to bridge that gap and give fans a great insight into what went into the making of India's first-ever World Cup-winning team which ignited the passion for the sport across the nation. Recently, at one of the promotional events of 83, Kapil Dev and Madan Lal recalled how they plotted 'revenge' against Sir Viv Richards in the 1983 World Cup final against West Indies.

Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup-winning side, was being taken to the cleaners by Richards in the final with West Indies chasing the target of 184. Despite being hit for runs, the former India pacer went to his captain - Kapil and asked for one more over.

Kapil, who was clearly not willing to risk handing over the ball to Lal, reluctantly agreed after he was convinced by the former pacer for a shot at redemption against Richards, who had taken him apart in the previous over. While speaking at&nbsp;the event, Kapil recalled how Madan walked up to him and requested for another over despite being dispatched all over the park by Richards.

Kapil eventually agreed and the move reaped rewards for India as Lal managed to dismiss the dangerous Richards on 33 off 28 balls to turn the final in India's favour. The incident has been also depicted in 83. A clip of Kapil and Lal recalling the episode during a promotional event was shared by the official Instagram handle of the film.

One of the major highlights of the film ahead of its release has been the near-perfect portrayal of the members of the 1983 World Cup-winning side by each of the actors. Read WION's review of '83' here The entire cast has gotten into the skin of their respective characters and the lesser-known anecdotes from India's journey to their maiden World Cup crown have been portrayed to perfection in the much-awaited film. Despite the victory being one of the biggest in India's cricketing history, it had not been documented well in the past. While speaking at the event, Kapil recalled how Madan walked up to him and requested for another over despite being dispatched all over the park by Richards. India's Test captain Virat Kohli's childhood coach has made some bold claims ahead of the team's upcoming Test series against South Africa. India have never managed to win a Test series in South Africa but appear to be favourites this time around with the hosts set to miss a number of key players. While there will be no Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock is set to miss a part of the three-match series and pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out due to an injury.

Kohli's childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has said the Indian team used to have a defensive mindset in Tests during current head coach Rahul Dravid's playing days. Sharma lauded Kohli for bringing in a change in the mindset of the Indian team overseas and helping them gain a winning attitude away from home.

"Indian team had a defensive mindset during Rahul Dravid's playing days. They wanted to ensure they didn't lose the series when they toured abroad. Virat Kohli's approach is to win and hence he plays with 5 bowlers," said Kohli's childhood coach while speaking on YouTube channel&nbsp;Khelneeti.

Dravid, who replaced Ravi Shastri as the head coach of the Indian team in November this year, helped the team bag a 1-0 win against New Zealand at home in his first Test assignment as the head coach of the team. The upcoming Test series against South Africa will be India legend's first major assignment overseas.

Sharing his views on Dravid's role in the team, Sharma said the batting legend will be helping Kohli in forming strategies off the field and grooming youngsters while the Test skipper will be the one making all the decisions on the field. He also stated that Dravid's captaincy stint during the infamous Greg Chappell era will also help him as a coach.

"Rahul Dravid has seen the Greg Chappell incident. Hence, he knows what the role of a coach is. His job is to make strategies and groom the youngsters. Ultimately it is the captain who has to lead the team," said Rajkumar.&nbsp;

India have been gearing up for the series with the preparations underway in Centurion which is the venue for the first Boxing Day Test from December 26. India will be looking to get off to a winning start and take an early lead in the three-match series with a win in the first Test.

India had defensive mindset during Dravid's time, Virat's approach is to win: Kohli's childhood coach

Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar believes the upcoming Test series in South Africa is India's best chance at beating the Proteas in their own backyard and finally clinching a Test series win in the Rainbow nation. India have been a force to reckon with in Test cricket over the years and have proved their mettle both at home and overseas under captain Virat Kohli.

The Indian team will head into the South Africa series on a confident note having recently beaten New Zealand 1-0 in the two-match series at home. Gavaskar believes the absence of some of the key campaigners in South Africa presents India with a great chance at winning the upcoming Test series against the hosts.&nbsp;

India will play three Tests in South Africa as part of the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) with the first Test in Centurion getting underway from December 26 (Sunday). South Africa will be without both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, who have already retired while wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock is likely to miss a part of the series. De Kock might miss the second and third Tests having asked for paternity leave.

"Coming to India's tour of South Africa, the turmoil with the release of the SJN report indicting three former South African greats is certainly not going to help the home team," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sportstar.

"There is also talk about Quinton de Kock, who loves Indian bowling, not being available to play the second and third Test. That weakens a fragile batting line-up even more and presents India with its best-ever chance of winning a Test series there," he added.

India lost their last Test series 2-1 against South Africa away from home when Du Plessis was in charge of the hosts. However, this time around India will start as favourites against the Dean Elgar-led side. Besides De Kock, South Africa are also set to miss the services of pacer Anrich Nortje, who has been ruled out of the Test series due to a persistent injury.

Gavaskar has backed India to clinch glory in South Africa this time around and script history by winning their maiden Test series in the country which will help them complete the cycle of winning a Test series in every Test-playing country.

"If they do that it will truly be the crowning glory and complete the circle of India winning a Test series in every Test-playing country. South Africa is the last hurdle and once that’s done then the sky is the limit for Indian cricket," said Gavaskar.

R Ashwin is gearing up for Team India's forthcoming three-match Test series versus South Africa, in the African nation, which gets underway from December 26 in Centurion. Ashwin, at 35, remains an integral part of the Test line-up and recently also returned to the limited-overs setup -- after a four-year halt -- during the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Back in mid-2017, Ashwin had lost his place in the ODI and T20I line-up whereas the rise of Kuldeep Yadav kept him on his toes even in the purest format. During India's Test series versus&nbsp;Australia in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Down Under, Ashwin played the first Test in Adelaide and helped Virat Kohli &amp; Co. win the series opener by 31 runs. However, an injury led to his omission from the remainder of the series. Kuldeep made the most of his absence and played the series decider at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney to return with a five-fer. Hence, then head coach Ravi Shastri labelled Kuldeep as the 'No. 1 overseas spinner' for India.

In an interview with&nbsp;Cricket Monthly, Ashwin opened up on former head coach Shastri's comments and said, "I hold Ravi&nbsp;bhai&nbsp;in high esteem. We all do. And I understand we all can say things and then retract them. In that moment, though, I felt crushed. Absolutely crushed. We all talk about how important it is to enjoy your team-mates' success.

"And I was happy for Kuldeep. I have not been able to get a five-for but he has a five-for in Australia. I know how big it is. Even when I have bowled well [at other times], I haven't ended up with a five-for. So I am genuinely happy for him. And it's an extremely happy occasion, to win in Australia. But if I have to come and partake in his happiness, and the success of the team, I must feel like I belong there. If I feel like I am being thrown under the bus, how am I supposed to get up and come for a party to enjoy the team's or team-mate's success?," said Ashwin.&nbsp;

He added, "I went back to my room and then I spoke to my wife. And my children were there. So we were able to, you know, shrug it off, and I still made it to the party, because, end of the day, we had won a massive series."

At present, the tables have turned with Kuldeep not being in the scheme of things for the full-strength national side across formats. On the other hand, Ashwin has been on a roll in the home Tests versus England and New Zealand and was also India's second-highest wicket-taker in the 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy win over Australia in their own backyard. In addition, he has contributed with the bat in crunch situations in the recent past in whites. Moreover, he has also claimed 9 wickets in five T20Is ever since his return to white-ball formats.

During India's Test series versus Australia in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Down Under, Ashwin played the first Test in Adelaide and helped Virat Kohli & Co. win the series opener by 31 runs. We all talk about how important it is to enjoy your team-mates' success. "And I was happy for Kuldeep. I have not been able to get a five-for but he has a five-for in Australia. I know how big it is. Felt crushed: R Ashwin recalls Ravi Shastri's huge praise for Kuldeep Yadav during 2018-19 Australia tour

R Ashwin remains one of the key players for Team India. Debuting for the national side in 2010, the wily off-spinner was part of MS Dhoni-led India's victorious run in the 2011 ODI World Cup. From thereon, he made his Test debut in late 2011 and remains an integral part of the Test line-up. On the other hand, he has now also made a comeback in the limited-overs setup after being out of contention for over four years.

Ahead of India's tour of South Africa, where they play three Tests and as many ODIs in the African nation, the 35-year-old made heads turn in a recent interview with The Cricket Monthly&nbsp;by saying that he was contemplating retiring from the game between 2018-2020.

Ashwin told, "Between 2018 and 2020, I contemplated giving up the sport at various points. I thought, 'I have put in a lot of effort, but it is not coming through.' The harder I tried, the farther it felt. Especially with athletic pubalgia and the patellar tendonitis (injury concerns) - I used to bowl six balls and then I used to be gasping for breath. And there would be pain all over the place.&nbsp;

"So you needed to make adjustments. When the knee pain got excruciating, the next ball I would probably jump less. When I jumped less, obviously the force needs to be produced through the core and the back and the shoulders, so the pubalgia would act up. So the third ball I would be extra side-on to try to use the hips. By the time I was done with six balls, I would be like, "I need a break here," he said in the interview while reflecting on his spat of injuries between the said period which brought his performances down as well to an extend.

"I contemplated retirement for a lot of reasons. I felt like people were not sensitive enough to my injuries. I felt like a lot of people were backed, why not me? I have done no less. I have won a lot of games for the team, and I am not feeling backed. I don't usually look for help, that somebody needs to back me, that somebody needs to cushion me or give me empathy. I felt I was not being able to be excellent and felt I needed a shoulder to lean on. It was not happening. I thought maybe I should try to find something else and be excellent at that," Ashwin asserted.

Despite batting several injuries since mid-2018, Ashwin has remained a part of India's Test line-up and was a vital cog in their Test series win in Australia in 2020/21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy edition and also taking India to the inaugural WTC final. I contemplated giving up the sport: R Ashwin admits to have thought of retirement between 2018-20

With 'rift' rumours done and dusted, here's reliving 5 top partnerships between Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed the upcoming three-match Test series between India and South Africa, followed by the three-match ODI series between the two sides will both be played behind closed doors with no fans present at the stadiums. CSA has decided not to sell any tickets and have fans at the stadiums due to the COVID-19 threat in the country.

The Indian team is already in South Africa and has been training in Centurion for the last few days ahead of the first Test between the two sides. The first Test is set to get underway from Sunday (December 26) in Centurion followed by the next two matches in Cape Town and Johannesburg respectively.

"Cricket South Africa (CSA) has noted the interests of cricket fans and other stakeholders on the scheduling and the release of the details of ticket sales, in connection with the forthcoming India vs Proteas tour that is scheduled to begin in less than a week," CSA said in a statement.

Cricket South Africa explained the reason behind the decision to not have fans present in the stadium for the matches by stating that it does not want to put the safety of the players and other support staff at risk. CSA believes having fans can compromise the bio-bubble arrangements for the series.

"Regrettably, CSA wishes to inform the most ardent fans of cricket as well as all sports lovers that owing to the increasing COVID cases around the world, and the fourth wave locally, the two cricketing bodies have taken a joint decision to protect the players and the tour by NOT making tickets available for the India vs Proteas offerings. This decision was taken in order to avoid any breaches that could compromise the tour from a Covid-risk perspective and to also maintain a hazard-free bubble environment," CSA added.

India's Test and ODI series against South Africa to be played behind closed doors due to COVID-19

Virat Kohli-BCCI have been at the loggerheads following the recent ODI captaincy switch in Team India. Early this month, the BCCI named Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain, replacing Kohli as the ODI skipper after he had already resigned as the T20I captain.

Ahead of India's departure for South Africa, where they play three Tests and ODIs each, Kohli addressed the media in BCCI's customary press conference and stated that he had no prior communication with the board and selectors before being removed as the ODI captain. In addition, he claimed that Sourav Ganguly had never approached him to reconsider quitting as T20I skipper, contradicting the BCCI chief's claims. Hence, there is clear tension between Kohli and the BCCI.

While the board hasn't reacted to the statements made by Kohli in the recent presser, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has defended BCCI's silence.&nbsp;

Main objective is to play for the country: Former Pak captain defends BCCI's silence over Kohli presser row

India are gearing up to take on South Africa in the series-opener of the upcoming three-match Test series which gets underway from December 26. The Boxing Day Test at the SuperSport Park in Centurion will kick off the much-anticipated Test rubber between the two sides. India have been training in Centurion for the past three days after landing in Centurion.

Ahead of the first Tets, the visitors face some major selection headaches with regards to both the batting and the bowling department. While Kohli has preferred to play with five specialist bowlers overseas, the green track and bouncy conditions in Centurion might tempt the visitors to go with an extra batter&nbsp;or include Shardul Thakur in the playing XI as an all-rounder along with R Ashwin.

If India decide&nbsp;to play four bowlers only, an extra batter in the form of Ajinkya Rahane or Shreyas Iyer can be included in the XI. Rahane's spot in the XI is no more certain as he has been replaced as the vice-captain of the team. Rohit Sharma had been named his replacement but in his absence, KL Rahul will be Kohli's deputy in the Test series which means Rahane faces massive competition.

Iyer, who made a stunning debut against New Zealand at home, can be asked to continue batting in the middle-order with Rahul either taking the opener's role or sliding into the middle-order himself. With no Ravindra Jadeja in the squad, Shardul can prove to be a great asset for India as he can be an extra batting option at no.7.

Former chief selector MSK Prasad believes Shardul is the best choice for India, in case the visitors decide to play five bowlers in the Test match. He also named the four pacers India should pick for the game while leaving out senior pacer&nbsp;Ishant Sharma, who has been pipped in the pecking order by Mohammed Siraj after the youngster's recent performances in the whites.

"I think Shardul Thakur is the best choice if they go in with five bowlers as he also gives the option of a steady No.7 batter and we also have Ravichandran Ashwin," Prasad told PTI.

"Four bowlers in this line-up are now confirmed if all fit -- Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj. I don't think, Ishant will be considered ahead of Siraj on current form," the former chief selector added.

Hanuma Vihari is another name in contention for a start in the first Test after impressing in India A's tour of South Africa where he struck three half-centuries against South Africa A. Vihari can take Jadeja's spot in the playing XI in case India decide to go with three pacers and Ashwin as their four bowlers. Batting coach Rathour then shared details of India's batting practice session ahead of the first Test and said it was a tough day for the batters as the conditions were overcast and they had to bat on the centre wicket. The likes of skipper Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin and others can be seen facing the pacers in the nets amid overcast conditions in Centurion.

"So today was a centre wicket practice session. Unfortunately for us, it was a fresh wicket with overcast conditions, pretty challenging for the batters. So the way they went about it today, extremely happy," said Rathour.

'Quality practice, good intensity': Rahul Dravid gives pep talk to Indian players ahead of SA Tests - WATCH

Virat Kohli-led India are in South Africa for three Tests and equal number of ODIs, starting from December 26 at Centurion. However, things aren't at its very best between Indian Test captain Kohli and Sourav Ganguly-led BCCI.&nbsp;

After BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new limited-overs captain, succeeding Kohli, fans were speculating if everything was fine between Rohit and Kohli. While Kohli brushed aside all 'rift' rumours with Hitman, he denied having any proper communication with the BCCI before his ODI sacking and also contradicted from Ganguly's remark on him resigning as T20I captain. To this, Kohli bluntly denied having any such talk with Ganguly in a recent presser. Thus, relations between Ganguly-led BCCI and Kohli is far from ideal. However, this wasn't the case in the past.&nbsp;

THROWBACK: 'One of my favourite captains' - When Sourav Ganguly was all praise for Virat Kohli

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said he likes Indian Test captain Virat Kohli's attitude but is not happy with his nature of picking up fights. Ganguly's comments come amidst raging controversy in Indian cricket over the recent change in ODI captaincy where Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma as the skipper of the ODI team.&nbsp;

While the decision created a lot of buzz in the cricket fraternity, things&nbsp;took a turn for the worse after Kohli's explosive press conference ahead of India's tour of South Africa where he contradicted Ganguly's comments on the captaincy change. Ganguly had claimed he had personally requested Kohli not to give up India's T20I captaincy earlier this year.

However, Kohli contradicted the statement by clarifying that he was never asked not to give up the T20I captaincy. He has stepped down as the T20I captain of the Indian team in October this year. Kohli also revealed there was no prior communication from the selectors and Ganguly about his sacking as ODI captain and that he was informed about the decision only ninety minutes before it was made official.

Amid the raging controversy, speaking at an event in Gurugram on Saturday (December 18), BCCI president Ganguly was asked which players' attitude does he like the most. Responding to the question, Ganguly took Kohli's name but added that he doesn't like his fighting nature.

“I like Virat Kohli’s attitude but he fights a lot," said the BCCI president.

Ganguly had earlier this week broken his silence after Kohli contradicted his comments in his press conference. The BCCI president refused to get into details and said the board will deal with the matter. "I have got nothing to say. We will deal with it, leave it to the BCCI," he had said.

As per reports, BCCI officials are not happy with the way the episode has panned out and Kohli's comments during the presser. However, the board will not rush into taking a hasty decision. BCCI is yet to react to the matter and it remains to be seen what Ganguly will have to say about Kohli's comments which clearly were against his version of the story.

I like Virat Kohli's attitude but he fights a lot, says BCCI president Sourav Ganguly amid captaincy row

Ever since Virat Kohli was sacked as ODI captain of the Indian cricket team and replaced by senior batter Rohit Sharma, there have been reports of a rift between the duo. Reportedly, all is not well between the two superstars of Indian cricket, however, Kohli had recently rubbished the rumours of a rift with Rohit during his press conference ahead of India's tour of South Africa.

Kohli said both Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid will have his full support as far as India's limited-overs teams are concerned. While the ongoing controversy surrounding the change in ODI captaincy followed by Kohli and Sourav Ganguly's contradicting comments have left many fans and former cricketers divided, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has given his take on the chances of Rohit replacing Kohli as the Test skipper of the Indian team in the future.

Butt believes there are very slim chances of BCCI taking a decision to replace Kohli with Rohit as India's Test captain in the future, however, he insisted if the move materialises, it will confirm there is tension between the duo and that they are not getting along well in the dressing room.

“I don’t think it should happen; it won’t be of any benefit. But I can’t say whether it will happen or not. If it happens, it will be clear that there is tension between them and that they are not getting along very well,” Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Butt said he will be surprised and many eyebrows will be raised if Kohli is sacked from Test captaincy after failing to lead India to a series win in the upcoming three-match rubber against South Africa. The former Pakistan cricketer argued that Kohli's credentials as a Test captain are the best among all Indian captains and it will not be a good move if he is sacked.

“There can’t be any other reason to snatch the captaincy away from a captain who has won the most number of matches abroad among all other Indian skippers. One series shouldn’t affect his captaincy. I don’t think it will happen and the lesser they happen, the better. And if they happen often, then that’s harmful for cricket,” said Butt.

Kohli is the most successful Indian Test captain of all time with 39 wins in 66 matches. He is just three wins away from surpassing Steve Waugh as the third-most successful captain in Test history.

Salman Butt on chances of Rohit replacing Kohli as Test captain: Will be clear, there is tension between them

KL Rahul has been&nbsp;appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian team for the upcoming Test series against South Africa. The Indian team is currently in South Africa for a three-match Test rubber followed by as many ODIs. The Test series is scheduled to get underway from December 26 with the first Test in Centurion.

Rohit Sharma had replaced struggling Ajinkya Rahane as the vice-captain of the Test team ahead of the South Africa series, however, he will not be in action due to an injury. Rohit suffered a hamstring injury during training last week and has been ruled out of the Test series. He is likely to return to lead the team in ODIs.

Rahul, who has been appointed as the vice-captain in limited-overs formats as well, will now act as Kohli's deputy in the Test series. The star batter is seen as one of the future captaincy prospects of the Indian team and has also been captaining in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the last two seasons now. BCCI confirmed Rahul's appointment as vice-captain of the Test team on Saturday.

Rohit, on the other hand, is currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where he is working on his recovery. If he manages to recover fully, the Hitman will be joining the Indian squad before the start of the ODI series against South Africa.

Meanwhile, Rahane is all set to be under the scanner in the upcoming Test series against South Africa considering his struggles with the bat recently. The senior batter has been far from his best in the longest format over the last couple of years and his spot in the team remains under threat if he fails to spark a turnaround in South Africa.

The Indian team had their first training session in Centurion on Friday after landing in South Africa and were seen enjoying some football with head coach Rahul Dravid overseeing the proceedings.

KL Rahul to be India's vice-captain for South Africa Test series in Rohit Sharma's absence

Indian youngster Ruturaj Gaikwad has been enjoying a purple patch in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. Captaining Maharashtra in the tournament, Gaikwad has dominated the run-scoring charts with over 600 runs so far in just five matches as he bangs on the selectors' door ahead of the ODI series against South Africa.

One of Chennai Super Kings (CSK)'s best batters in the last couple of years, Gaikwad was the highest run-getter in IPL 2021 and has been in sensational form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. While he has already made his T20I debut for India, he might get to make his ODI debut in the upcoming South Africa ODI series.

Former India cricketer and popular commentator Aakash Chopra feels Gaikwad had done enough to get a chance in the ODI series against the Proteas. The CSK star has 603 runs in five matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy so far with as many as for centuries and an average of over 150.

Chopra said Gaikwad's name should be the first one for consideration when the squad is picked for the ODI series against South Africa. The former cricketer heaped praise on the 24-year-old stating that he has seen some of the right-hander's innings and it felt like he was playing against kids.

“The first name, the name at the top is Ruturaj Gaikwad. I mean he has hit four centuries, at one point he had hit three hundreds in three matches and no one was able to get him out. I saw some of his innings. It seemed like he was playing against kids," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"He was only playing the sweep shots against the fast bowlers, who does that? Inside out fours against the spinners. Bowlers were bowling alright but Ruturaj actually looked in a different league altogether," he added.

Chopra feels it will be almost impossible for the selectors to ignore Gaikwad, who has been in red-hot form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and has already proved his worth in the IPL with a season to remember for CSK. The youngster is likely to make the cut in the ODI squad but it remains to be seen if he will get a chance in the playing XI.

'Seemed like he was playing against kids': Aakash Chopra wants youngster in squad for South Africa ODIs

Virat Kohli contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in an explosive press conference ahead of the Test series against South Africa. Contrary to Ganguly's comments that the BCCI had president personally spoken to Kohli to convince him not to give up T20I captaincy earlier this year, Kohli said he was never asked not to quit. Kohli also revealed he was informed about his sacking as ODI captain only 90 minutes before the decision was made official.

Kohli has been replaced with Rohit Sharma as ODI captain of the Indian team. Rohit had earlier taken over as India's T20I skipper after Kohli's decision to step down from the post. Ganguly had earlier said the selectors only wanted one white-ball captain leading the side which is why Kohli had to be replaced by Rohit.

However, his claim that Kohli was asked to continue as the T20I captain before stepping down, was labelled false by India's Test skipper himself. The contradicting statements from Kohli and Ganguly have led to a massive row over the change in captaincy with BCCI yet to come up with a response. BCCI president Ganguly had said the board will decide the course of action when asked about Kohli's comments.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal has urged the BCCI president to come out in public and give an explanation. The 1983 World Cup winner believes the selectors could have handled the situation in a better way.

“I think this situation should have been handled in a better way because it is not a controversy but a matter of opinion. I don’t know what Sourav had said to Virat so I don’t want to comment on that," Lal told ANI.

“But I think that Sourav being the president should come out and give an explanation and that will be the end of the entire issue. We need to be focused on the South Africa tour right now as it is an important game for us,” he added.

The former all-rounder also agreed with Sunil Gavaskar's views on the matter. Gavaskar had said Kohli should sit down with the selectors and the management to sort out the issues. However, Lal insisted the selectors should have communicated with Kohli in a proper way.

“Gavaskar is correct with his point. Virat should clear all his issues with the management. This is not a big matter. I would say that the selectors should have handled the situation better. It is the duty of selectors to look after and stop these controversies. I am not sure if the selectors spoke to Virat before taking the decision,” concluded Lal.

Sourav Ganguly should give an explanation: Former India cricketer on Virat Kohli's ODI captaincy row

Virat Kohli's explosive press conference ahead of India's upcoming Test series against South Africa has put the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a spot of bother amid the raging controversy over the change in team India's ODI captaincy. Kohli was replaced with Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of the Indian team earlier this month.

While the decision didn't come as a surprise to many, the manner in which it was announced left many disappointed. During his bold presser, Kohli contradicted the claims of BCCI president Sourav Ganguly that he was asked not to give up T20I captaincy and also revealed he was informed about his sacking as ODI captain just 90 minutes before it was made official.

Kohli stated that there was no prior discussion between him and the selectors or Ganguly, contradicting the BCCI president's comments. Reacting to the controversy, former India all-rounder and 1983 World Cup-winner Kirti Azad has taken a dig at the current national selection panel led by Chetan Sharma.

"If this was to be decided by the selectors, they should have gone up to the president. Generally, what happens is that when a team is selected – when I was also a national selector – we would select the team and go to the president of the board. He would see, okay it, sign it and then it would be announced. But it is always the custom that a team after being selected goes to have a look," Azad was quoted as saying by News18.

The former all-rounder said the current member of the national selection panel, who have decided to remove Kohli as the ODI captain of the Indian team, have not played half the number of international matches as the Indian Test skipper combined. Azad said the selectors should have informed Ganguly about their decision and an informal conversation with Kohli could have been the best way to deal with the situation.

"So obviously, if you are changing the captain for any format, you write and inform the president. Virat is not upset, but I feel he is hurt for the way he has been informed. So once it went to Sourav, he could have also unofficially spoken about it. You can understand, I don't want to say this. All the selectors are really great guys, but if you put their total number of matches, it won't be even half of what Virat has played," said the former India all-rounder.

The BCCI has not yet responded to the contradicting claims by Kohli and Ganguly and has decided to not take any hasty step considering the team's morale ahead of the South Africa Test series. The three-match Test series between India and South Africa is all set to get underway from December 26.

Virat Kohli's explosive press conference ahead of India's upcoming Test series against South Africa has put the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a spot of bother amid the raging controversy over the change in team India's ODI captaincy.
