Virat Kohli-led Team India's Test side has arrived in South Africa for a three-match Test series, starting from December 26.

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia (twice but once under Ajinkya Rahane), have an unassaiable lead over England in the five Tests in the United Kingdom (early this year) and will now aim to win their first-ever Test series on South African soil. For that to happen, the 33-year-old Kohli will have to be at his very best with the bat.

For the unversed, Kohli hasn't scored a century in international cricket since late 2019 and his recent form in whites isn't upto the mark. Thus, he will have to lead from the front with the willow in hand. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar feels Kohli can return to his usual best and score centuries after centuries, like he used to, with no burden of limited-overs captaincy.

"We may see the Virat from two years ago, slamming centuries after centuries," the former India captain said on Sports Tak.

Gavaskar also opined that the white-ball formats' captaincy will help Rohit Sharma, who has often excelled under pressure and with added responsibilities. In this regard, he said, "We have also seen that when Rohit Sharma was made captain of Mumbai Indians, he took those scored of 20, 30 and 40 runs and converted them into big scores. When you are captain, you play with a lot more responsibilities. Your shot selection gets better. You know you have to set an example and MI reaped the benefits by winning the title five times. It is possible to see Rohit score even more runs once he is the white-ball captain."

There are plenty of things happening in Indian cricket at present. With contrasting statements from Test captain Virat Kohli and BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly regarding the recent ODI captaincy switch and the former's T20I captaincy resignation, not everything is at ease in Indian cricket. Amid all this, the senior men's cricket team has arrived in South Africa where they play three Tests and as many ODIs, starting from December 26.

Under Kohli, India have won a Test series in Australia and gained an unassailable 2-1 lead over England in the incomplete five Tests early this year in the United Kingdom. Now, the focus has shifted to the SA Tests.

While India have won Test series in England, Australia (twice recently) and in New Zealand to date, they are yet to win a series in whites on South African soil. Thus, not only the experienced Indian campaigners will have to stand tall but even the young guns will have to contribute to script history.

Ahead of the SA Tests, which gets underway from December 26, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly lauded Indian young batter Shreyas Iyer and is 'hopeful' of him delivering the goods overseas, starting from the series in the African nation.

For the unversed, Iyer had a memorable debut series versus New Zealand at home. He returned with 202 runs, at 50.50, to end as India's highest run-getter (second overall) with a fifty and hundred.

"I am extremely happy that he did well in his first Test, but his real test will come when he goes to South Africa. When he goes to South Africa and England, with the pace and bounce, hopefully he will stand up and deliver," he added.

Real test will be in SA: BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly 'hopeful' of Indian batter delivering the goods overseas

India's Test captain Virat Kohli rubbished the rumours that all is not well between him and India's newly-appointed white-ball captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit replaced Kohli as captain of the ODI side last week ahead of the team's upcoming tour of South Africa. He had earlier taken over T20I captaincy from Kohli when the latter had decided to step down as captain from the shortest format.

While stepping down as T20I captain, Kohli had expressed his desire to continue leading the team in ODIs and Tests, however, the BCCI decided to cut short his captaincy stint in limited-overs cricket leading to a massive controversy. The controversy has only gotten worse in the last couple of days after Kohli delivered an explosive press conference on Wednesday.

Kohli contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's claims in the presser, stating that he was never asked to not give up T20I captaincy and also revealed he was not communicated about the decision in advance by the BCCI. Kohli said he was informed about the decision only 90 minutes before it was made official.

Kohli also rubbished the rumours of him skipping the upcoming ODI series against South Africa due to personal reasons and once again spoke about his equation with Rohit Sharma. Kohli said both Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid will have his 'absolute support' going forward and that there is nothing wrong between him and India's newly-appointed white-ball skipper.

It was not the first time, Kohli quashed the rumours of his bad equation with Rohit. Reports of a rift between the duo had gone viral post the conclusion of the 2019 ODI World Cup where India bowed out after losing the semi-final against New Zealand. Kohli had then refuted the baseless allegations and slammed those 'feeding off lies'.

"In my opinion, it's baffling. It's absolutely ridiculous to read this kind of stuff, that comes out there. I have been to public events where we have been praised and here we are feeding off lies, overlooking facts, turning a blind eye to all good things that happened and creating fantasies and scenarios in our head. We want to accept that this is the truth," Kohli had said in a presser after the 2019 ODI World Cup to end the rumours of a rift between him and Rohit.

Kohli will not be leading India in limited-overs cricket but remains the captain in Tests and will be captaining the visitors in the upcoming three-match Test series against the hosts starting from December 26. BCCI is yet to respond to Kohli's comments contradicting Ganguly's statements.

While Ganguly had said in an interview that he personally requested Kohli not to step down as T20I captain, Kohli maintained he was never asked by anybody to not resign from the post.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed the legendary Rahul Dravid as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team in November this year. Dravid replaced former head coach Ravi Shastri at the helm and has already guided India to back-to-back series wins against New Zealand at home.

While India clean swept the Black Caps 3-0 in the T20I series, they won the Test series 1-0. Reports of Dravid's likely appointment as the head coach of the team had gone viral months before he took over the role with many believing there was not much competition.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who has previously spoken about how he managed to convince Dravid to take the India head coach job despite him not being interested initially, has revealed there was another Indian batting legend who was keen on taking the high-profile role.

"We had Rahul in mind for a long period of time, both me and Jay, but he wasn't agreeing because of the time away from home [and] because doing a national team's job is [about being] on the road for about 8-9 months in a year and he has two young children," Ganguly said on chat show Backstage with Boria.

He revealed Indian legend VVS Laxman was one of the former cricketers interested in the India head coach post. Laxman, who has not coached a national side before, has served as the mentor of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL and has also worked as a batting consultant for Bengal in the domestic circuit.

Ganguly revealed Laxman wanted to work with the Indian team but things didn't work out for him to replace Shastri. The BCCI president also stated that the batting legend will get a chance to work with the national team in the future.

“He (Laxman) was keen on the national team job, but that couldn’t worked out. But somewhere down the line, he would have that opportunity to coach the national team," Ganguly added.

R Ashwin has had a stellar career in international cricket. Having debuted under MS Dhoni, the wily off-spinner has been a match-winner across formats for Team India. While the 35-year-old mostly remains a Test specialist at present, he made a comeback into the limited-overs setup -- after a four-year-hiatus -- during the 2021 T20 World Cup.

There's no doubting his credentials in white-ball formats, where he has accounted for a total of 211 scalps, whereas he is India's third-highest wicket-taker in the red-ball format (427 wickets). Ashwin has not only played under several captains, such as MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma and many others in the IPL, he has also played along with many wicketkeepers. The list includes Dhoni, Wriddhiman Saha, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, KL Rahul, etc.

He added, "There's this one dismissal of Ed Cowan in Chennai on Day 1 where he steps out and gets stump. The ball didn't turn but it bounced, and MS Dhoni collected the ball. I've hardly seen him miss anything, be it stumping or run-out catches. He's one of the most exceptional keepers against spin. Saha is not far behind either."

The Board of Control for Cricket in Inda (BCCI) is not hurrying to make a statement or take a hasty decision amid the controversy surrounding Virat Kohli's removal as team India's ODI captain. Kohli was in the centre of an explosive press conference on Wednesday ahead of India's tour of South Africa where he came out clear on the rumours floating around regarding his sacking and also contradicted BCCI president Sourav Ganguly's claims.

Kohli during the press conference said he was never asked to not give up the T20I captaincy of the Indian team, contrary to Ganguly's claim that the BCCI president had personally spoken to Kohli to not step down. The Indian Test skipper also informed the journalists present in the presser that he was made aware of the change in ODI captaincy only 90 minutes before it was made official.

As per a report in PTI, no one in BCCI is happy with Kohli's comments during the press conference where he refuted the board's president's claims. While the cricket fraternity awaits BCCI's response in the matter, the board has decided not to take any hasty step which can impact the Indian team's morale ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa.

"No statements, no press conference. We will deal with it, leave it to (the) BCCI," Ganguly had told reporters on Thursday when asked about Kohli's comments contradicting his claims.

As per PTI, the board president and BCCI secretary Jay Shah were on a video call with the BCCI office-bearers on Wednesday where Kohli's comments were discussed in detail and it was decided that the BCCI will not release any official statement or conduct a press conference in the matter.

"Expert opinion was taken on how to deal with the sensitive matter as it also involves the respect of a president's office. The BCCI knows that a Test series is round the corner and any hasty decision or statement from them could affect the morale of the team," a senior BCCI source told PTI.

Many were expecting the BCCI to conduct a press conference with the head of the selection panel - Chetan Sharma in it to address the raging controversy after Kohli and Ganguly's contradicting statements. However, the board is unlikely to rush into action.

Meanwhile, Kohli, who rubbished the reports of him taking a break and skipping the ODI series against South Africa, reassured that he will extend his full support to new limited-overs captain Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid in taking Indian cricket forward.

Kohli also admitted that he understood why he was sacked as ODI captain as India failed to win an ICC trophy under his leadership.

(With agency inputs) ×

BCCI not happy with Virat Kohli's comments but unlikely to take hasty step ahead of South Africa series

Indian cricket has been embroiled in controversy ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the change in captaincy in the ODIs. Virat Kohli was replaced by Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain of the side without any explanation from the selectors before BCCI president Sourav Ganguly clarified that the decision was taken as selectors didn't want two white-ball captains for the Indian team.

Ganguly also said he had personally requested Kohli to not give up T20I captaincy and continue leading the team. Kohli had announced his decision to step down as T20I captain in October this year and relinquished his role post the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. However, in an explosive press conference ahead of the South Africa tour, Kohli broke his silence on the matter.

He refuted Ganguly's claims that he was requested not to step down as the T20I captain of the side and also said there was no prior communication from BCCI before the decision to remove him as ODI captain was taken. Kohli said he was informed only 1.5 hours before the decision was announced.

"Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate. I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series and there was no prior communication to me at all since I announced my decision on T20I captaincy," Kohli had said.

"When I left the T20I captaincy, I had first approached BCCI and intimated them of my decision and laid down my point of view in front of them (office bearers). I gave the reasons why I wanted to quit T20 captaincy and my view point was received very nicely. There was no offence, no hesitation and not for once was I told that ‘you should not leave T20 captaincy’," added Kohli.

South Africa spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has reacted to the matter as he lauded the Indian Test captain for giving out his version of the story without fearing anyone. Kohli's version of the story is quite different from that of BCCI president Ganguly and many have praised the Test skipper for not taking the safe route.

Shamsi quoted a tweet from fan which read - "The safer option for Virat would’ve been to side with Ganguly’s version of the story. Clearly, Virat isn’t that kind of a person, on and off the field."

"This is why he is as good as he is”, Shami wrote while quoting the tweet as he lauded Kohli.

'Safer option would've been to side with Ganguly': Tabraiz Shamsi lauds Virat Kohli amid ODI captaincy row

A number of former cricketers have been recently involved in Indian cricket in coaching or a mentorship role. Since the arrival of former India captain Sourav Ganguly as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), former cricketers have been approached for various roles to continue strengthening Indian cricket.

While the likes of Anil Kumble and Ravi Shastri served as head coach of the side, the legendary MS Dhoni was part of the backroom staff as the Indian team's mentor for the T20 World Cup 2021.

Another Indian great Rahul Dravid is currently the head coach of the Indian team while VVS Laxman has taken over the new Director of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. BCCI president Ganguly has now hinted at the inclusion of none other than batting legend Sachin Tendulkar in an official role in Indian cricket.

While several stalwarts of the bygone era have served Indian cricket in some role or the other, Tendulkar has never returned to the Indian dressing room after retiring from international cricket. Ganguly recently opened up on Tendulkar's inclusion in Indian cricket is not that far away but 'conflict of interest' remains a big hurdle in making it happen.

"Sachin is obviously a bit different. He doesn't want to be involved in all this. I'm sure with Sachin's involvement in Indian cricket in some way, it can't be a better news than that. In what way that obviously needs to be worked out,' Ganguly said on the show Backstage with Boria.

"Because there is too much of conflict all around. Rightly or wrongly, anything and everything you do you have the word 'conflict' keeps jumping out of the window, some of which I find really really unrealistic. So you have to see the best way to keep the best talent involved in the game. And at some stage Sachin will also find a way to be involved in Indian cricket," he added.

On the tour to South Africa, which was largely in doubt due to the Omicron variant of COVID-19 surging in the Rainbow nation, India will play three Tests and three ODIs as part of the revised schedule. But the four T20Is, part of the original itinerary, have now been deferred and will be played at a later date.

Virat Kohli led-Team India reaches Johannesburg for South Africa Tests

Team India saw a big change early this month as BCCI removed Virat Kohli as the ODI skipper, appointing Rohit Sharma as the limited-overs captain altogether. For the unversed, Hitman had already succeeded Kohli as the T20I captain after the latter had made it clear that the World Cup would be his last assignment as the skipper in the shortest format.

Rohit, who has led Mumbai Indians (MI) to five IPL titles and has stood out as a leader for Team India in the limited opportunities, will look to end India's eight-year-long ICC-title drought. Under Kohli, India did brilliantly in bilateral series, played the 2017 Champions Trophy final and reached the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup before their disastrous performance in the 2021 T20 WC.

Speaking on Boria Majumdar's show Backstage with Boria, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has explained why Rohit deserves to be India's captain in the white-ball formats after Kohli. The BCCI president also made it clear that Rohit became the best choice post Kohli's resignation from the top post in T20Is.

"Five titles with Mumbai, another one with Deccan Chargers speak volumes of his ability under pressure. Once Virat decided he doesn't want to be part of T20 leadership, he was the best choice. He started well, beating NZ 3-0 in India. Hopefully, we will see a better result for India next year than what we saw this year,” Ganguly said.

He added, "To be honest, in 2017 Champions Trophy and 2019 World Cup, India was good. We were exceptional in the 2019 World Cup, one bad day and our entire hard work of two months was wiped away. I was disappointed with the way we played this World Cup (T20 WC 2021). It was the poorest we played in the past 4-5 years."

At present, Indian cricket isn't at a very good state following the ODI captaincy switch. There were reports of an alleged rift between Kohli and Rohit post the board's decision to sack the former from ODI captaincy. While Kohli denied all such rumours in a recent presser, he denied Ganguly's remark of being asked to reconsider resigning as the T20I captain. In addition, he stated of not having any prior communication with the board members and selectors before being removed as ODI skipper.

Hence, Indian team is dealing with a lot of outside noise ahead of their tour of South Africa. The national side, on Thursday (December 16), arrived in the African nation for the three Tests and ODIs each, starting from December 26.

Once Kohli decided to not be T20I skipper, Rohit was best choice for limited-overs captaincy: Ganguly

Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 15), interacted with the media in BCCI's customary press conference before Team India's departure for South Africa. In the presser, the 33-year-old tried to clear the air on many issues which have been prevalent in Indian cricket following the ODI captaincy switch.

During the presser, Kohli was asked to share if he had any communication with the BCCI prior to his sacking as the ODI captain and if the board members had asked him to reconsider his decision of quitting as the T20I captain. He, thus, denied having any proper communication in advance before his removal as the ODI skipper and even rubbished claims that he was asked to reconsider his decision of resigning as the captain in the shortest format. Thus, there have been many reactions post Kohli's explosive press conference.

Former Indian captain and World Cup-winning skipper Kapil Dev has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to Kohli's statements.

Talking to ABP News, Kapil said, "It is not good to point fingers on anybody at this point in time. The South Africa tour is coming and please pay attention to the tour. I would say board president is board president but yes, the Indian cricket team captain is also a big thing. But talking badly about each other in public, I don't think it is a good thing, whether it is Sourav or Kohli."

BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly has also reacted to Kohli's claims, which are contrary to what was said by the board president. Hence, Ganguly told News18, "I have no comments to make. The BCCI will deal with it appropriately."

Amid all the mess, India have left for South Africa where the national side is scheduled to play three Tests and equal number of ODIs. The tour will commence with the first Test on December 26 in Centurion.

In the presser, the 33-year-old tried to clear the air on many issues which have been prevalent in Indian cricket following the ODI captaincy switch.

But talking badly about each other in public, I don't think it is a good thing, whether it is Sourav or Kohli." Please pay attention to SA tour: Kapil Dev schools Virat Kohli following his explosive press conference

Everything is not at its very best in Indian cricket thanks to the mess created following the ODI captaincy switch in senior men's team. On December 8, BCCI had removed Virat Kohli as the ODI captain and appointed Rohit Sharma as his successor.

Since then, many reports started flowing in that Kohli and Rohit are at loggerheads and there is an alleged rift between the duo. Hence, Kohli answered several questions of the media in BCCI's customary press conference before India's departure for the South Africa tour on Wednesday (December 15).

During the Q/A session with the media, Kohli opened up on whether he had any communication with the selectors and board members prior to his removal as ODI captain and if he was asked to reconsider his decision of quitting as the T20I skipper.

To this, Kohli said, "Whatever was said about the communication that happened about the decision that was made was inaccurate. I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8 for the Test series and there was no prior communication to me at all since I announced my decision on T20I captaincy."

Hence, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly received a lot of flak on social media platforms as he had earlier claimed to have spoken to Kohli to reconsider his decision of resigning as the T20I skipper. Hence, the BCCI president has now told News18, "I have no comments to make. The BCCI will deal with it appropriately."

Earlier, Ganguly had told News18, "I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy. Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket. He has captained for a long period of time and these things happen. Because I have captained for a long period of time; therefore, I know.

"Also, they wanted only one white-ball captain. And that's why this decision. I don't know what's going to happen in future. But as I said, it's a good team and it has some fantastic players and I hope they will turn it around," he added.

Indian cricket isn't at its best right now. Ever since BCCI removed Virat Kohli as the ODI captain, appointing Rohit Sharma in his place as the limited-overs captain, things haven't been very smooth. Many believe lack of proper communication has been the reason for contrasting statements made by Kohli and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, following the ODI captaincy switch.

Virat Kohli was kept in loop: BCCI sources claim ODI captaincy switch was 'collective' decision

Plenty of major developments have taken place in Team India following the T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE. Firstly, Ravi Shastri's tenure as head coach ended and he got replaced by Rahul Dravid whereas Rohit Sharma succeeded Virat Kohli as the T20I captain post the latter's resignation after the World Cup.

Last week, the BCC announced Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain, removing Kohli. Hence, Hitman has now taken over as the limited-overs captain whereas Kohli remains the leader in-charge of the Test line-up. In addition, Rohit has been promoted as the Test vice-captain, replacing Ajinkya Rahane. Following the turn of events, news of Rohit's injury came out, ruling him out of the Test series versus South Africa in the African nation, from December 26.

On the other hand, many news portals have reported that Kohli is willing to skip the South Africa ODIs in order to celebrate the first birthday of his daughter Vamika. Thus, Rohit's injury and Kohli's reported absence from ODIs raised eyebrows as many suspected all isn't right between the two cricketers post the captaincy switch in the 50-over format.

Nobody is bigger than the game: Anurag Thakur reacts to alleged rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (December 15), answered several questions from the media in BCCI's customary press conference before Team India's departure for South Africa, where they play three Tests and ODIs each.

During the presser, Kohli was asked to react to the ODI captaincy switch in Indian cricket, share his equation with Rohit Sharma, open up on whether he had any communication with the BCCI before quitting as T20I captain and more.

On quitting as T20I captain, Kohli stated, "I had told BCCI that I want to quit T20I captaincy. I wasn't told to reconsider it. It was received well, without any hesitation; I was told it's a progressive step and it's in the right direction. I had told them that I want to continue ODI and Test captaincy unless the office bearers think otherwise. I had given that option to them."

On the other hand, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had revealed that he had a conversation with Kohli and had also requested him to continue as the T20I captain before his resignation.

Thus, with contradictory claims from Kohli and Ganguly, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to the developments.

Gavaskar told India Today, "I think it (Kohli’s comments) actually doesn’t bring the BCCI into the picture. I think it’s the individual who has to be asked where he got the impression he had conveyed such a message to Kohli. So that’s the only thing. Yes, he is the BCCI president and surely he should be asked why there is this discrepancy. He is probably the best person to ask about the discrepancy in what you seem to have to say and what the Indian captain has said."

"Yes, it always helps to have a clear line of communication so that there is no speculation. So from now, from what has happened, there should be a clear line of communication and the chairman of the selection committee can come down and say why he has been picked and why he has not been picked. Sometimes, even if that is not needed, a press release is also good enough. A good press release giving all the reasons makes life a lot easier," Gavaskar added.

Gavaskar further asserted, "As long as it’s not something that he has not found out from the media or as it happened in the past that the commander of a passenger flight announced it, I think he has been told by the chairman of the selection committee that he is not going to be the captain, I think that is absolutely okay."

"I don’t know what these people wanted to do. As long as there has been communication between the chairman of selection and him, it’s the decent thing to do. Over there, what the conversation was, I am not aware. Maybe the chairman of the selection committee also said ‘thank you so much," he concluded.

With Kohli and Ganguly's statements being poles apart, it certainly doesn't clear the picture for fans and the media. Hence, chief selector Chetan Sharma is reportedly expected to clear the air in a press conference in the coming days.

I had given that option to them." On the other hand, BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had revealed that he had a conversation with Kohli and had also requested him to continue as the T20I captain before his resignation. ALSO READ | 'I wasn't told to...' - Virat Kohli contradicts BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly on resigning as India's T20I captain Thus, with contradictory claims from Kohli and Ganguly, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now joined the bandwagon and reacted to the developments. He is probably the best person to ask about the discrepancy in what you seem to have to say and what the Indian captain has said." "Yes, it always helps to have a clear line of communication so that there is no speculation. Gavaskar further asserted, "As long as it’s not something that he has not found out from the media or as it happened in the past that the commander of a passenger flight announced it, I think he has been told by the chairman of the selection committee that he is not going to be the captain, I think that is absolutely okay." "I don’t know what these people wanted to do. As long as there has been communication between the chairman of selection and him, it’s the decent thing to do. Over there, what the conversation was, I am not aware. Maybe the chairman of the selection committee also said ‘thank you so much," he concluded. On Wednesday (December 15), Virat Kohli interacted with the media in BCCI's customary press conference before India's departure to South Africa. Given that there have been some major developments in Indian cricket in the recent past, with not much communication from the board, Kohli's presser was keenly awaited and followed.

During the presser, Kohli opened up on losing ODI captaincy to Rohit Sharma, opined on Rohit as a limited-overs skipper, his availability for SA ODIs and also whether he had any word with the BCCI before stepping aside as the T20I captain, in mid-September.

Because I have captained for a long period of time; therefore, I know. Also, they wanted only one white-ball captain. And that's why this decision. I don't know what's going to happen in future. But as I said, it's a good team and it has some fantastic players and I hope they will turn it around."

There was no communication with me before that. We chatted briefly about it during the selection meeting, but no communication about this was made before the selection meeting on ODI captaincy."

'I wasn't told to...' - Virat Kohli contradicts BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly on resigning as India's T20I captain

Team India are set to leave for South Africa. The national side will play three Tests and equal number of ODIs in the African nation as the tour will kick off on December 26 with the first Test in Centurion. Ahead of the tour, India were dealt with a major blow with newly-appointed vice-captain Rohit Sharma being ruled out of the three Tests due to injury.

For the unversed, India have been hit with several injury concerns for the SA Tests. The likes of Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel have already been ruled out. Thus, Rohit's injury added to India's woes. The team management have roped in Priyank Panchal for Rohit, however, they need to announce the new vice-captain as well for the Proteas challenge.

While many believe Ajinkya Rahane might once again be given the vice-captain's post for the SA series, there are many other contenders as well. India's No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara has served as the vice-captain on two occasions in the recent past. Many believe the post can also be given to a youngster like Rishabh Pant -- to groom him for the future -- or the likes of R Ashwin or Jasprit Bumrah. Nonetheless, KL Rahul seems to be the frontrunner.

"There’s no point in looking back. At the moment, the odds are tilted towards Rahul. Rahane is not a certainty to start in the playing XI (because of his poor form). “Even in the case of Ashwin, the team management has often not played him abroad. In that case, it’s tough to make either of them the vice-captain. The idea is to announce Kohli’s deputy in a day or two,” a source close to the selectors told Times of India.

I was always available: Virat Kohli shuns rumours of missing Proteas ODIs before India's departure for SA

After Rohit Sharma's hamstring injury forced him to pull out of the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa on Monday (November 13), Virat Kohli has reportedly decided to opt out of the ODI series against the Proteas. India are scheduled to tour South Africa later this month for a three-match Test series followed by as many ODIs. While Kohli will be leading the team in Tests, newly-appointed white-ball captain Rohit will lead in the ODI series.

However, both Rohit and Kohli are unlikely to play together during the South Africa tour. As per a report in the Times of India, Kohli will not take part in the ODI series as it coincides with the first birthday of his daughter Vamika. Kohli had informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in advance that he will be opting for a break in January this year.

While Kohli will be missing the ODI series due to personal reasons, Rohit will not be part of the Test series after picking up a hamstring injury while training in Mumbai. BCCI on Monday had announced that the Test vice-captain will miss the three-match series with Priyank Panchal named his replacement.

As per the report, Kohli's decision has nothing to do with the ongoing controversy surrounding the change in ODI captaincy in Indian cricket. Rohit replaced Kohli as the ODI captain last week. While announcing India's Test squad fo the South Africa series, the board confirmed that Rohit will be leading India in ODIs as well from the upcoming South Africa tour.

Rohit had earlier been appointed as the T20I captain of the team after Kohli decided to step down from the post following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2021. While the move didn't surprise many, the manner in which it was announced by the BCCI left many miffed.

BCCI announced the decision of Rohit taking over as ODI captain from Kohli without any explanation from the selectors or comments from Kohli. BCCI president Sourav Ganguly later issued a statement stating that the selectors wanted to have only one white-ball captain going ahead which led to the decision of Rohit replacing Kohli in ODIs.

The development has since become the biggest talking point among the cricket fraternity with several former cricketers and experts sharing their views on the matter. While Kohli will miss the ODI series, Rohit is expected to return to full fitness by the time and should be available to lead the team in the three matches.

Virat Kohli set to miss upcoming ODI series against South Africa due to personal reasons - Report

The Cricket South Africa (CSA) has revised the bio-bubble norms for the India tour starting from December 26. With the entire touring party and the host contingent being fully vaccinated, positive Covid-19 cases, if any arise, will be allowed to complete their isolation inside the bubble itself, said the CSA.

"Immediate contacts of anyone testing positive for Covid-19 in the bubble during the South Africa-India series will not need to isolate and leave the bubble, rather will be allowed to quarantine in the hotel room as long as they are clinically stable," the cricket board added.

"These are part of the `strict` norms for the Bio-secure Environment (BSI) put in place by Cricket South Africa in coordination with BCCI as the Indian contingent is set to arrive in Johannesburg later this week," the cricket board said.

"Considering that all those within the ecosystem will be vaccinated, the positive case will isolate within the hotel room if clinically stable," CSA`s chief medical officer Shuaib Manjra told ESPNcricinfo. "Contacts will continue playing and training with non-medical interventions strictly observed, and tested daily," he added.

CSA had originally put together more relaxed bio-bubble plans after the third wave of the pandemic receded in South Africa in October. These have now been modified following the emergence and quick global surge of Omicron, the latest covid-19 variant.

"Whilst at the end of the third wave we considered moving from a strict BSE to a managed environment, the Omicron variant and high levels of community transmission have forced a strict BSE," Manjra stated.

Cricket South Africa revises bio-bubble norms for Team India tour

Team India have seen various changes in the leadership group post the T20 World Cup in the UAE. Ravi Shastri was succeeded by Rahul Dravid as the head coach whereas Rohit Sharma took over as the T20I captain, after Virat Kohli's resignation.

Last week, BCCI replaced Kohli as the ODI captain as Rohit has become the new limited-overs captain of Team India. In addition, Hitman has been promoted as Kohli's deputy in Test cricket; replacing Ajinkya Rahane.

While many have reacted to the above-mentioned changes in the Indian team, there are some who feel things aren't at its best between Rohit and Kohli post the ODI captaincy switch. The speculations increased as reports started flowing in that Kohli is set to skip the India-South Africa ODIs, in the African nation early in 2022, following the recent turn of events.

Kohli's likely unavailability for the ODIs started doing the rounds after news came in that Rohit will miss the preceding three Tests versus South Africa due to injury. Thus, many believe there's a rift between the two superstar cricketers.

Now, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has joined the bandwagon. "The question is, 'is there anything simmering at all (between Kohli and Rohit)?' "Till then, I will give the benefit of the doubt to both the players. Because both have served Indian cricket brilliantly and I don't think it is fair at all for any one of us, without having exact information, to be pointing fingers at either of them," Gavaskar told India Today.

Reportedly, Kohli is set to address the media in a press conference on Wednesday (December 15). More clarity is expected once the Test captain interacts with the reporters.

At present, India is gearing up for the South Africa tour, comprising three Tests and ODIs each.

We shouldn't jump to conclusions: Gavaskar reacts as many sniff rift between Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Suryakumar Yadav has done the hardyards to represent Team India. Being groomed in the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) setup, SKY returned to Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2018 and his career changed from thereon. From IPL 2018-2020, the right-hander was in stunning form for the Rohit Sharma-led MI line-up, amassing over 400 runs in each season.

Despite his IPL heroics, and also some good outings in the domestic circuit, the right-hander had to toil hard to break into the national side. During his rich form in IPL 2020, Team India's limited-overs squad was announced for the Australia tour. While many thought he would be included, SKY wasn't named in the squad. Recently, the MI batter opened up on his long wait to enter the Indian team.

The 31-year-old in a recent chat with cricket presenter Vikram Sathaye told, "Almost half the IPL was over (in 2020) before that match (against RCB) happened. I still remember, the Indian team (for the tour of Australia) was going to be announced. I had a good IPL 2019 and 2020 season, and I scored runs in domestic cricket as well," said the right-handed batter.

"I expected that I would get a call. It was not an arrogant thought like ‘yes, I am going to get a call’. But, back of the mind, there was this hope that the long wait would end. When I saw the squad, and my name was not in it, I was a little disappointed. From my side, I was trying to do everything. I took my wife to the beach for walks, and missed a few practice sessions, as I was thinking about that (not being selected) only,” he added.

He further stated, "One day, Mahela and Zak came up to me, and said that this was the perfect opportunity to prove myself as it was MI vs RCB. I said, ok, but back of the mind, I was lost and disappointed. I didn’t know what was happening even as the trainers and captain were speaking to me."

SKY finally debuted for India during the England T20Is at home early this year. He made a mark in his first-ever appearance for the Men in Blue, opening his account in international cricket with a blazing six off Jofra Archer. He was also named the Player-of-the-Series in Shikhar Dhawan-led India's limited-overs tour of Sri Lanka in mid-2021.

Despite an ordinary IPL 2021, SKY has been retained by the MI franchise for IPL 2022. Moreover, he will hope to continue piling up runs for Team India in their upcoming assignments in the shorter formats and cement his spot.

I was lost and disappointed: Suryakumar Yadav on late Team India call-up despite IPL heroics

Rohit Sharma had been recently appointed as the vice-captain of the Indian Test team, replacing senior batter Ajinkya Rahane ahead of the upcoming tour of South Africa. However, Rohit is now set to miss the three-match series following a hamstring injury. He picked up the injury while practising in Mumbai ahead of the Test series.

India A batter Priyank Panchal has been named Rohit's replacement for the three-match rubber as the Hitman faces a race against time to recover for the three ODIs that will be preceded by the Test series. India are scheduled to play three Tests as many ODIs on their tour of South Africa which gets underway from December 26.

While the BCCI has confirmed Panchal will be his replacement, it is not certain who will be taking over as the vice-captain of the team in his absence. Rahane is unlikely to be handed over the vice-captaincy role after being replaced and a younger player might get a chance to be Kohli's deputy in the series.

Here is a look at players who can replace Rohit Sharma as vice-captain for the South Africa Test series:

1) Rishabh Pant

One of the best performers for India with the bat in Test cricket over the last couple of years, Pant has finally cemented his spot in the Indian team across formats. He played numerous memorable knocks for India on their tour of Australia in 2020-21 to help them win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for a second time in the row under Ajinkya Rahane. Pant also led Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in IPL 2021 and has done well as a captain. He can be a perfect fit for the vice-captain's role in order to be groomed as one of the future leaders of the Indian team in the longest format.

2) Jasprit Bumrah

One of the few members of the current Indian squad, who is a regular across all three formats, Jasprit Bumrah has been a consistent performer for the team ever since making his international debut in 2016. He will be one of the strongest contenders to be Virat Kohli's deputy for the South Africa series. Gifted with a great cricketing brain and exceptional skills, Bumrah has been a mainstay for Team India and has matured into a fine leader of the pace attack. With countries going against the idea of not handing over leadership roles to bowlers, Bumrah can be a perfect choice for vice-captaincy.

3) KL Rahul

KL Rahul can be an obvious choice considering he is also Rohit Sharma's deputy in limited-overs cricket. Rahul has been in and out of the Test team for a while now but can be a regular member of the playing XI in the South Africa Tests considering Rohit's injury and Rahane's poor form. Cheteshwar Pujara has also struggled of late which can open the door for Rahul's inclusion in the XI and he can be made Kohli's deputy in the longest format. He has also led Punjab Kings in the IPL for two seasons and is likely to lead whichever team he joins ahead of IPL 2022.

Three players who can replace Rohit Sharma as India's Test vice-captain for South Africa series

Team India are set to travel to South Africa for three Tests and equal number of ODIs. The tour came under dark clouds following the Omicron threat, however, the national side are now set to leave for the African nation after a few days.

Following the SA tour, India are set to host Sri Lanka for T20Is and Test series. Moreover, the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue are also to host Afghanistan in three ODIs in March just before IPL 2022.

According to the FTP released by the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), the Asian team is set to travel to India for three ODIs after their limited-overs tour of Bangladesh in February-March. “The two Boards are regularly in discussion. The exact dates and the venues are being worked on. The Indian team will be playing against Afghanistan in a bilateral ODI series for the first time and it will be a good exposure for the young cricketers,” sources, aware of the development, said.

The India-Afghanistan ODIs will be a part of the ICC Super League, which counts towards the qualification for the next edition of the 50-over World Cup (to be held in India in late 2023).

India and Afghanistan have met in ICC events or multi-nation tournaments -- during the Asia Cup -- however they haven't met each other in bilateral ODIs or T20Is. In 2018, Afghanistan played their first-ever Test with Ajinkya Rahane-led India being their opposition, in Bengaluru. That remains the only bilateral series meet between both sides to date.

Team India is in a tricky position. Following the T20 World Cup in the UAE, the senior men's cricket team has undergone several changes within the leadership group. While Ravi Shastri's tenure as the head coach ended and was replaced by Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma took over as India's T20I captain after Virat Kohli's resignation.

Last week, Rohit was appointed as India's limited-overs captain, replacing Kohli in the ODI format as well. In addition, Hitman has replaced Ajinkya Rahane to become India's Test vice-captain. After so many changes, it is being reported that Kohli is set to miss the India-South Africa ODIs, to be held early next year, following the three Tests in the African nation.

With Kohli skipping the ODIs, many speculations have risen that all is not well between Kohli and Rohit post the ODI captaincy switch decision by the BCCI. However, a BCCI official has shunned all such reports of Kohli's unavailability and claimed that he hasn't sent any formal request to skip the ODIs versus the Proteas.

Virat Kohli hasn't sent any formal request to miss SA ODIs, reveals BCCI official

R Ashwin's inclusion in India's T20 World Cup 2021 squad had come as a surprise to many. Ashwin, who last played a limited-overs game for India in 2017, was called up to the squad for the T20 World Cup 2021 at the expense of the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, who were both snubbed from the squad.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly recently opened up on Ashwin's shocking inclusion and admitted he was not sure if the off-spinner will be part of India's limited-overs sides once again. However, Ganguly revealed captain Virat Kohli was keen on having Ashwin in the team and had asked for his inclusion.

“I wasn’t sure whether he would be part of the white-ball team again. But then Virat Kohli wanted him to be part of the World Cup. And, whatever little bit of opportunity he got, I thought he was superb," Ganguly said on the chat show Backstage with Boria.

Ashwin's inclusion had raised eyebrows as it was over someone like Chahal, who had been a regular in India's T20 team in the run-up to the World Cup and did brilliantly in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. Nonetheless, Ashwin played three matches at the T20 World Cup 2021 and returned with six wickets.

Ashwin continued his fine form in the T20I series against New Zealand at home and impressed in the Test series as well. Ashwin became the third-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests during the recently-concluded New Zealand series by surpassing Harbhajan Singh.

Ashwin currently has 427 wickets to his name in 81 matches and is just eight wickets away from leaving behind Kapil Dev to become the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket. Ganguly heaped praise on the senior spinner and said he has no doubts over his talent and skills as he has already achieved a lot in international cricket.

“Everybody speaks about him. Look at Rahul Dravid’s statement after the (Kanpur) Test match - he called him an all-time great. You don’t need rocket science to judge Ashwin’s talent. My appreciation just comes from what I see. It may be Ashwin, it may be (Shreyas) Iyer, it may be Rohit (Sharma), it may be Virat (Kohli)," said Ganguly.

“I don’t see a reason why (I shouldn’t back him). Look at the number of winning teams he has been a part of. 2011 World Cup, he was part of the winning team for India. 2013, when he won the Champions Trophy, he was a leading bowler in that tournament. When CSK won IPLs, he was the main bowler for them, bowling in the powerplay and difficult situations," he added.

While he has 427 wickets in Tests, Ashwin has 150 wickets in 111 ODIs and 61 scalps in 51 T20Is for the Indian team.

'I wasn't sure but Kohli wanted him': Sourav Ganguly on R Ashwin's surprise inclusion in T20 WC squad

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday announced that India's Test vice-captain Rohit Sharma will be missing the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa due to a hamstring injury. Rohit had been named the vice-captain of the side ahead of the tour but the injury means he will not be able to recover in time for the series.

While Rohit will miss the Test series, Virat Kohli is likely to miss the ODI leg of the South Africa tour. India are scheduled to play three Tests followed by three ODIs against the Proteas. As per reports, Kohli has decided to pull out of the ODI series due to personal reasons as the series coincides with the birthday of his daughter Vamika.

Kohli had reportedly informed the BCCI in advance that he will be needing a break in January and thus is likely to miss the ODI rubber. Reacting to the reports of Kohli missing the ODI series, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has said the decision is certain to raise questions.

“Questions would be raised on what is happening. Not everybody would take the reason that’s coming out, that he (Kohli) wants to be with family. I really can’t stay much about it and don’t want to speculate. It could just be a coincidence that Rohit will be unavailable for the Test matches in South Africa and Kohli (reportedly) for the one-dayers. Having said that, if this carries on, we would soon come to know what’s going on," Butt said in a video on his YouTube channel.

The reports of Kohli's decision to pull out from the ODI series have surfaced just days after he was replaced by Rohit as the ODI captain of the Indian team. The BCCI had in a press release confirmed that Rohit will be leading India in ODIs as well going forward without any explanation from the selectors on the reason behind the decision.

Butt admitted not having Kohli will be a huge setback for India and a great advantage for South Africa, who will be fancying their chances against the Men in Blue. Butt also said India will miss Rohit's presence in Tests as the Hitman was the leading run-getter for the team in Tests this year.

“India are likely to miss both (Rohit and Kohli) in one series each. It will be a question mark for India to fill their places in the two series’. At the same time, it will be a big relief for the opposition since both are main players. Rohit’s mere presence makes a difference and it’s a big loss at the top of the order (in Tests)," said Butt.

'Questions will be raised': Former Pakistan captain on Virat Kohli missing ODI series against South Africa

Team India are set to leave for South Africa in a few days, where they will scheduled to play three Tests and ODIs each in the African nation. The tour opener will commence with the first Test, at Centurion, but India have been dealt with huge concerns courtesy injury to various key players.

The latest to join the list of injured players is Rohit Sharma, India's Test vice-captain and newly-appointed limited-overs skipper. Hitman sustained a left hamstring injury and has been ruled out of the three-match Test series versus South Africa. Moreover, he also got hit on his hand during net session while taking throwdowns. For the unversed, the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, Axar Patel are already out of the tour due to injury issues. Hence, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra expressed his concerns and asked whether the tour should be cancelled seeing the number of unfit players.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, "Ravindra Jadeja unavailable, Axar Patel unavailable, Rahul Chahar unavailable, you don't have Shubman Gill and now they are saying that Rohit Sharma is also not there. I mean what is happening? Should we cancel the South Africa tour?

"Rohit Sharma is going to be a huge miss. If his tour is in doubt, India's chances are looking in doubt because who was your best Test batter in 2021. Why did you do well in England - Rohit was there with Rahul. Rohit has started loving Test cricket and he is enjoying leaving or defending."

Chopra further asserted, "There are multi-fold problems. Shubman Gill and Mayank Agarwal had opened just now, KL Rahul was injured. I met KL Rahul recently and he said that he will be fine. You will see Mayank Agarwal opening along with him but who will be the third opener now?

"We were saying that it has become a story of four or five openers and here Mayank Agarwal has become the second opener and KL Rahul the first. And we have reached the stage when Mayank Agarwal made his debut, in a space of few weeks. The Indian team becomes significantly weak," the cricketer-turned-commentator further added.

India will start their tour of South Africa with a three-match Test series, starting from December 26 in Centurion. The Test series will give the No. 1 ranked Virat Kohli-led side a big opportunity to win their first-ever series in whites on African soil.
