West Indies captain Shai Hope said his team’s performance in the 2-2 T20I series draw against India showed how much the side had improved as a unit. He also stressed that “success does not necessarily have to be series wins”. 'Success doesn't have to be...': WI skipper Hope after T20I series draw against India

India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has criticised the flat pitches used in the India-West Indies T20I series, saying they offer little help to bowlers. His comments came after the West Indies chased down India’s total of 249/5 in the second T20I in Ranchi, winning with nine balls to spare. “On such wickets, there’s nothing for the bowlers. When the ball gets old, there’s dew, the ball comes nicely onto the bat, and the grounds are getting smaller. We’ve seen this in the IPL as well, with 260 being chased in 19 overs. In this game too, 250 got chased down easily in 18.3 overs,” Chahal said on JioStar. “So, what should bowlers do? What is the use of their skill? I feel for them, because I am a bowler too and when I bowl in the IPL, on small grounds with flat wickets, you have an Impact Player as well. Earlier, when the Impact Player rule was not there, you used to see 50 runs in six overs, and 170-180 was a fighting total. But these days, 70-80 runs are scored in the first six overs, and the game is done there itself. So, either you have to have something for the bowlers in the wicket, or else just install a bowling machine,” he added. Also Read - IND vs WI, 3rd T20I: When and where to watch live streaming in India?
Shai Hope, Rutherford power West Indies to record chase
West Indies captain Shai Hope led from the front with an unbeaten 102 off just 45 balls as his team defeated India by six wickets in the second T20I to level the five-match series 1-1. West Indies captain Shai Hope reacted strongly to a reporter after his team lost to India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday (Mar 1) at the Eden Gardens. The Men in Blue defeated the West Indies by five wickets in their final Super 8 match to reach the semi-finals. It was not a good day for Hope, as he managed to score only 32 runs from 33 balls before being bowled by Varun Chakravarthy. After the match, Hope was asked if he felt responsible for not scoring faster and whether his slow innings affected the team’s total. At first, he said he could have increased his scoring rate earlier. But when the same question was repeated, he replied in a sharp tone, saying he would take the blame if that was what people wanted to hear. Also Read - US-Israel attack Iran | Formula 1 2026 opening weekend preparations in Australia hit amid Middle East conflict “You all make me laugh, man. But in situations like this, when you're struggling, everyone struggles. But like I said, I don't think I was batting badly. It's just that I was hitting the fielders and then trying to play the situation a bit more. Obviously, I wanted to bat a little bit deeper into the innings and face most of the spin threat in the middle. But I just didn't get going today. But yes, I'll take the blame. So that's what you want me to say,” Hope said at the post-match press conference. During the match, Hope started the innings very slowly, making only two runs from his first eight balls. He later hit Hardik Pandya for a six and a four to build some momentum, however, he found it difficult to score against the spinners and was eventually bowled. India are a win away from reaching the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 after thrashing Zimbabwe on Thursday (Feb 26) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 72-run win means India just need a win on Sunday against the West Indies in their final Super 8 Group 1 match and take another step towards defending their T20 World Cup title. However, there could be one factor that could seal the fate for the Men in Blue on Sunday and it is not the form of their openers nor the opposition, the West Indies.
THIS factor can stop India from reaching the semis
After Thursday’s result, both India and the West Indies have two points each with a game in hand. However, for the time being, both teams are separated by the net run rate (NRR), with West Indies sitting above India. The Caribbean side has an NRR of 1.791 while India sit third with an NRR of -0.100. India may have won the two-match home Test series against West Indies 2-0 but the crowd during both the Tests was disappointing as well as the pitches. After the series, India coach Gautam Gambhir advocated for better pitches in red-ball cricket for the 'nicks to carry.' Echoing his stance, former India spinner Ravi Ashwin has also called for Test venues in the country to be numbered - something former skipper Virat Kohli had said in 2019. Both, Virat and Ashwin retired from Test cricket this year along with Rohit Sharma as India started the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle under new skipper Shubman Gill.
Ashwin wants Test venues numbered, just like Kohli had asked
"Test centres is not about crowds alone. It is also about the familiarity of conditions. If we are playing a Test in Guwahati or Ranchi, I am not against these venues as a possibility. But the problem in India is every surface has a different identity. There is literally no bounce in the Eastern part of the country. It becomes a very ordinary Test match pitch then," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel after the series. "Otherwise, the only point is you are playing within that Indian map as home, but it is not home," he added. Also Read - Ashes verbal duel truly on - Ex-England pacer Broad calls Australia 'weakest since 2010'
West Indies second innings in Delhi brings pitches in focus
India had elected to bat first in Delhi Test, second of the series, and scored 515 runs in the first innings before declaring. The visitors looked more settled on a benign pitch, scoring 390 runs with two centurions in the scorecard. The fact that India had to bat again and the Test was stretched into the fifth day, put focus on the quality of pitch and of the venue due to lack of crowd.

After Virat Kohli asked the Test venues to be numbered in India, Ashwin had echoed the same view post India's 2-0 series win against West Indies which failed to attract any crowd.

India made light work of the West Indies in the second Test match in Delhi as they got the better of the visitors by seven wickets at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The win also saw India pocket the series 2-0, thereby strengthening their position in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.
