<p>India clinched a fifth consecutive series triumph in the West Indies on Monday when the second and final Test of their series ended as a draw with no play possible because of rain on the final day.</p>

<p>West Indies closed day four at 76 for two having been set a daunting victory target of 365 to square the series at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad.</p>

<p>However early showers put paid to any prospect of play in the morning and when they returned with greater intensity in the afternoon, the umpires were left with no option but to abandon the day's play and the end of the Test match and the series.</p>

<p>Mohammed Siraj, whose Test-best figures of five for 60 in the West Indies first innings opened the door to victory for India on the fourth morning, was named "Player of the Match".</p>

<p>"There was no help for fast bowlers on this wicket and when you get success like this in these conditions it gives you confidence," said Siraj via an interpreter on receiving the award.</p>

<p>"I had simple plans and just executed them. The captain just asked me to keep on doing what I have been doing before."</p>

<p>For his skipper, Rohit Sharma, the disappointment of not being able to push for victory on the last day to earn a 2-0 sweep was tempered by the satisfaction of seeing this team succeed without key performers in the bowling department.</p>

<p>"It was really pleasing to see how Siraj has led the attack in the absence of (Jasprit) Bumrah and (Mohammed) Shami," he observed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For Kraigg Brathwaite, the captain of a West Indies team that last defeated India in a Test match in May 2002, it was yet another case of fishing for positives in a sea of setbacks.</p>

<p>"The key from here is obviously to be consistent," said the opening batsman in what has become a familiar refrain after every failed campaign.</p>

<p>"We will continue to work on our game, but it is encouraging to see the emergence of Alick (Athanaze) and Kirk (McKenzie) in the middle-order. I think these two guys have the promise and they are the future. I have a lot of belief in these two."</p>

<p>India won the first Test in Dominica by an innings and 141 runs – a record margin of success for them in the Caribbean – in three days.</p>

<p>While India would have been satisfied in some measure with the 1-0 series success, adding to previous triumphs in 2006, 2011, 2016 and 2019, they would have been disappointed to miss out on the chance to earn maximum points at the start of the new cycle of the World Test Championship.</p>

<p>Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishaan Kishan marked his Test debut against the West Indies. In the first test, he opened his account in 20 balls. But, in the second Test at Port of Spain, when he got a chance to bat at number 4 in place of Virat Kohli, Ishan hit the first fifty of his Test career. Ishan played only 33 balls. <p>India legend Virat Kohli has added another feather to his cap. The right-handed batter scored a 29th Test century in the second Test against the West Indies. This was Kohli’s first ton on foreign soil after 55 months or 1677 days. The last century on foreign soil was scored by Virat in December 2018 at the Perth Stadium. This was Kohli's third Test century against the West Indies. Earlier, he had scored centuries in Northsound (200) and Rajkot Test (139). Kohli spoke about his 100 at Trinidad in a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on social media.</p>

<p>“I have always enjoyed the atmosphere here. You can see all those 10-15 years of tough cricket here. Every time we come to the West Indies, Antigua, and Trinidad are my best places to play,” said Kohli. He added that just like Adelaide Oval is one of his favourite grounds to play purely for the atmosphere. “Few stadiums you walk in and you can feel the atmosphere. This venue is the same for me. <p>Virat Kohli achieved another record when India stepped on the field to take on West Indies in the opening day of the second and final Test in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on Thursday (July 20). Kohli became only the tenth player to enter the 500-match club when India were asked to bat first in the series finale, being held in the Caribbean island.</p>

<p>Among Indians, Kohli became only the fourth player to reach the coveted club. Sachin Tendulkar leads the overall list (664) whereas MS Dhoni (538) and current head coach Rahul Dravid (509) occupy the second and third spot, respectively, in the list featuring Indians.&nbsp;On Thursday, Kohli attained the fourth position in his landmark appearance.</p>

<p>Debuting in 2008, Kohli soon became India's go-to-batter across formats and has amassed over 25,000 international runs along with 75 tons. On Day One of the second Test, Kohli came out to bat at 153 for 2 and saw his side lose two quick wickets before&nbsp;the tea break. However, he remained undeterred, looked focused and in complete control, ran hard between wickets to take India to 288 for 4 at stumps, being unbeaten on 87 along with Ravindra Jadeja (34*).&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the 72nd over, Kohli-Jadeja ran hard to add two more runs to the scoreboard. While completing the second run, Kohli realised he was in danger&nbsp;and, thus, dived to save himself. His efforts bore fruits as he survived and his commitment was hailed by former cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop.</p>

<p>Bishop reflected on Kohli's commitment and intensity&nbsp;when play was stopped momentarily. He said, "Absolutely superb. That's the sort of desperation you love to see incorporated in your batting and batsmanship. This is a Test match. You sometimes see guys doing this in desperation in a one-day or white-ball scenario, but here is a guy who has been around for 500 international games and in a Test match, knows the value of every run. Putting his body on the line and diving to make sure he's in. That tells you how badly he wants whatever he gets out of this innings."</p>

<p>It is to be noted that play was halted for a brief period&nbsp;for Kohli, who was attended&nbsp;by the team physio after his desperate dive. After preventing a&nbsp;run-out, the 34-year-old&nbsp;signalled for the physio instantly. The former Indian captain's jersey was in a mess and he also did some&nbsp;damage to his already-taped finger. However, Kohli put his body on the line for the team's cause.</p>

<h2><strong>'I wish I could get every young batter in the Caribbean - male and female - running like that...'</strong></h2>

<p>Thus, Bishop was in awe of Kohli and added, "I wish I could get every young batter in the Caribbean - male and female - running like that and not just sitting back waiting for boundaries. You know how much you can top up your scores but this sort of intensity... I have seen a number of batters no desperate enough to dive and commit themselves like that. This is a good example."</p>

<p>Day One proved to be memorable&nbsp;for Kohli. Having entered the 500-match club, he also achieved more milestones during his unbeaten 87. The right-hander became India's fifth-highest scorer in Tests, fifth-highest run getter in international cricket and also the fifth-highest run-scorer by a batter at No. 4 in whites.</p>

<p>Kohli will aim to get to his 29th Test century -- which will be his second of 2023 -- when Day Two kicks off in Trinidad on Friday (July 21).</p>

<h2>Virat Kohli will play his 500th match</h2>

<p>Former India skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of reaching a milestone in the next game. In the second Test against West Indies, Kohli will play 500th international match of his career. Kohli has so far featured in 110 Tests, 274 ODIs and 115 T20I matches. Apart from this, Kohli also has a chance to surpass former India batter Virender Sehwag in terms of runs in Test cricket. Kohli has so far scored 8555 runs in 110 matches in Test cricket. Sehwag, on the other hand, has 8586 runs to his name in 104 Test matches. Virat needs only 31 runs to overtake Sehwag. Kohli produced a fine knock of 76 in the opening Test against West Indies.</p>

<p>After having a positive result in the first Test, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will now be eager to carry forward the brilliance in the final game of the series. Team India currently have a lead of 1-0 in the two-match Test series against the Caribbean opponents. "In Dominica (first Test venue), we had a clear idea when we saw the pitch and knew the conditions. Here we don't have clarity as there is talk of rain, but I don't think there will be drastic changes. But whatever conditions are available, based on that, we will make that decision,” Rohit was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda ahead of the final Test. Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was adjudged Man of the Match in the series opener for his superb knock of 171.</p>

<p>The South Korean military detained a North Korean soldier who crossed the heavily fortified demilitarised zone (DMZ) that separates the two countries, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) said on Thursday.</p>

<p>The soldier expressed his intention to defect to South Korea, the JSC said later.</p>

<p>The unidentified active-duty soldier was first detected by thermal imaging equipment moving south near the Imjin River late on Wednesday and South Korean troops took him into custody just before midnight, the JCS said.</p>

<p>Also on Wednesday, the South Korean military recovered a body near the DMZ suspected to be that of a North Korean civilian, a spokesman for South Korea's defence ministry said on Thursday.</p>

<p>Clad in military-type pants and a belt, the body was found in the Imjin River and appeared to have been dead for at least two weeks, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.</p>

<p>South Korea returned three North Koreans on Monday who had crossed the maritime border aboard a fishing vessel.</p>

<p>Officials from the South said they thought the fishermen may have wanted to defect but in the end the men chose to return to North Korea.</p>

<p>Hundreds of North Koreans make their way to South Korea each year hoping to defect, but unauthorized crossings of the DMZ are rare.</p>

<p>The zone is dotted with landmines, fences, guard posts, and other military equipment on both sides of the border.</p>

<p>The last defection by a North Korean soldier across the DMZ was in November 2018.</p>

<p>In November 2017 a North Korean soldier was shot multiple times by fellow soldiers as he fled across the border into South Korea, where he was treated by doctors.</p>

<p>Another North Korean soldier crossed the border to defect a few weeks later in an incident that led to South Korean guards firing warning shots into North Korea.</p>

<p>North and South Korea agreed last year to try to reduce tensions along their border by reducing the number of landmines and guard posts, disarming their guards at a truce village, and imposing a no-fly zone.</p>

<p>On Thursday (July 14), Yashasvi Jaiswal created history as he became only the 17th Indian, 113rd player overall, to slam a hundred on Test debut. Jaiswal got to the remarkable feat during Day Two of the first Test, in Dominica, between India and West Indies. The left-hander began his innings with a lot of promise and while he was cautious on Day Two, he never looked out of sorts and reached the triple-figure mark without dropping much sweat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After Jaiswal entered the record books during Day Two's proceedings in Dominica, wishes have been pouring in for him from all corners. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar also joined in and congratulated the 21-year-old left-hander. He tweeted, "A यशस्वी&nbsp;start to your Test career, @ybj_19! Well done.
