Shai Hope hits unbeaten fifty in West Indies' first win over India since 2019

India's stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya has said that his 'body is fine' and he only needs to up his workload to be able to bowl in the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Pandya made the comments after India's loss in the second ODI against West Indies in Barbados.

“My body is fine. I have to bowl more overs and get my workload up for the World Cup. I’m a turtle right now not the rabbit and hoping everything goes right as the World Cup comes on,” said Pandya who bowled 6.4 overs in the match for 38 runs and no wickets.

India's performance was below par in the game as they bundled out for a mere 181 runs in 40.5 overs. Notably, India had rested Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma for the match. Coach Rahul Dravid termed resting his two best batters as an 'experiment to find answers' due to injuries to key players namely Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer.

Pandya, however, thinks it's exciting to go 1-1 in the third game as it'll be 'more challenging.'

“To be honest, you want to be going 1-1 to the third game as it’ll be more challenging and exciting. They will be tested, we will be tested now that the series stands 1-1. The next game will be exciting for the viewers as well as the players,” he said.

“We didn’t bat the way we were supposed to. The wicket was better than it was in the first game. Everyone barring Shubman (Gill) hit fielders and got out. Disappointing but many things to learn,” said Pandya, who himself scored 7 off 14 balls.

IND vs WI 2nd ODI: Virat, Rohit rested as Hardik Pandya takes charge of side; Sanju Samson returns

India had rested their key players in the second ODI against West Indies to find some answers, said head coach Rahul Dravid after the loss. Hardik Pandya-led side was bundled out for just 181 in about 41 overs. The team management had rested Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the game and paid the price with a loss.

Dravid, however, explained the experiment as last chance to try out players before the Asia Cup and ICC ODI World Cup.

"Honestly, this was our last chance to try some of our players. We have got four of our players who are injured and are in the NCA. With days to go for the Asia Cup and then the World Cup, we are kind of running out of time in a lot of ways. And we are hoping that some of them will be available for the Asia Cup and the World Cup but we can't take those chances. We have to try out other people and give them chances so that in the worst-case scenario they at least have game time behind them."

"It also gives us the opportunity to make some decisions on players. Honestly in a series like this with 2-3 matches to go before the Asia Cup, playing Kohli and Rohit would have not given us any answers. But with the injuries we have in the NCA and some uncertainty around them we just wanted to give others a chance," Dravid said.

'Running out of time,' says coach Rahul Dravid after India's loss against West Indies in second ODI

Rohit Sharma-led India beat West Indies by five wickets in the series opener of the three ODIs, being held in the Caribbean island. With the 2023 ODI World Cup set to be held in October-November, in India, Rohit & Co. are now left with only a handful of ODIs in the run-up to the mega event at home. Thus, the series versus the lowly-ranked West Indies is crucial in their preparations.

The Men in Blue stood tall and dominated proceedings in the first ODI, dismissing the Windies for a paltry 114 after opting to bowl first, and chased down the score in 22.5 overs. Ravindra Jadeja's three-fer and Kuldeep Yadav's 4 for 6 led the show for India before Ishan Kishan's 52 and unbeaten cameos from Jadeja-Rohit took India past the finish line.

During the run-chase, India shuffled their batting order as Ishan opened with Shubman Gill whereas Suryakumar Yadav, vice-captain Hardik Pandya, Shardul Thakur and Jadeja were also promoted. India's two experienced campaigners such as Virat Kohli and Rohit were demoted and Hitman explained the reason behind the move.

'We will keep trying these things whenever possible'

At the post-match presentation, Rohit revealed, "We wanted to give game time to the ODI guys who have come in, we will keep trying those things whenever possible. To restrict them to 115, we knew we could try these guys and give them a go. I don't think they'll get many chances like this."

Rohit came out to bat at No. 7 whereas Kohli didn't feature in the run-chase. On him batting at No. 7, the Indian captain pointed out, "I made my debut for India and was batting at number 7, reminded me of those days."

With Rohit and Kohli experienced enough, India is focusing on giving their middle and lower-order batters enough chances -- wherever available -- in the run-up to the ODI WC, which starts on October 05. While only Ishan (52) made full use of batting at the top, India will be happy with other middle and lower-order batters also being exposed in the middle. They will hope for more such chances where they can experiment in the upcoming ODIs.

The second and penultimate ODI kicks off on Saturday (July 29) as Rohit & Co. will hope to claim an unassailable lead.

After winning the two Tests 1-0, India will now face West Indies in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (July 27) in Barbados. Ahead of the series opener, captain Rohit Sharma addressed the media and opened up on the likely comeback of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's last international match was in September 2022 and since then, he has been out of cricketing action due to injury concerns. He is at the National Cricket Acamdey (NCA) and is gearing up for a quick comeback, with the ODI World Cup to kick off on October 05 in India.

While Rohit mentioned that he is not aware of Bumrah's return, as per reports, he might feature in the Ireland T20Is next month. India vs WI, 2nd Test: Final day goes to rain as India take series 1-0

India won the two-Test series against West Indies 1-0 after rain washed away the entire fifth day of the 2nd Test in Port of Spain. India made all efforts to force a result including scoring at 7.5 runs per over in their second innings but weather had different plans. After the match, India skipper Rohit Sharma showered praises on his predecessor Virat Kohli for stablising the innings.

"In Test matches, you need guys who stabilise the innings like what Virat did, he played superbly. You need the mixture of everything. We have depth, we have got variety. We are in the right place. It's about getting the job done," said Rohit about Virat's innings. Kohli had scored a sublime hundred in the first innings of the second Test, his first outside Asia in five years, which gave India a mammoth 438 runs on the board.

India skipper Rohit Sharma praises Virat Kohli after series win against West Indies

India and West Indies played out a tame draw in the second and final Test, in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, after the final day's play got washed out on Monday (July 24). After gaining a whopping 183-run lead, courtesy of Mohammed Siraj's 5 for 60, India accelerated from the word go in their second essay on the fourth day, with rain already making its presence felt. Thus, they managed to set up a challenging 365-run target for the hosts. Day Five was going to be a tough contest between bat and ball, with West Indies in search of 289 more runs whereas India needed eight more scalps for a win.

Nonetheless, rain played spoilsport to the entire day as honours were shared with India winning the series 1-0. IND vs WI: Ishan Kishan not in favour of England's Bazball, says it can only be executed on flat tracks

The second and final Test between India and West Indies, in Port-of-Spain in Trinidad, ended in a tame draw after rain played spoilsport on Day Five on Monday (July 24). With the drawn Test, India won the two-match series 1-0 but lost out on adding more points to their kitty in the new 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. In the updated WTC points table for the ongoing cycle, India have now dropped to the second spot with Pakistan at the top of the overall standings.

Both India and Pakistan started their campaign in style in the 2023-25 WTC cycle. While India defeated West Indies in the two-match Test series opener by an innings and 141 runs, their Asian neighbours beat Sri Lanka, in Galle, by four wickets in the first of the two Tests. But with Rohit Sharma & Co. losing out on adding more points following the rain-marred second Test in the Caribbean island, the Men in Green now sit at the top spot in terms of win percentage.

Updated WTC points table: Pakistan sit at top spot after India vs West Indies 2nd Test ends in draw

The second Test against West Indies may have ended in a draw, but India has started the new World Test Championship cycle without any hiccups. With Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal’s centuries and Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj’s fifers, the Indian side dominated the Windies. However, former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar has yet again questioned the purpose behind the runs scored by Kohli and Rohit. The veteran cricketer seemed upset to see the established names getting preference over youngsters.

Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit and Kohli

With former cricketer Ajit Agarkar appointed as the new chairman of selectors, Gavaskar hoped for winds of change. Sunil Gavaskar questioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India and said that the runs scored by captain Rohit Sharma and former skipper Virat Kohli against this West Indies attack begs the question, "What did the selectors learn that they didn't know already?"

“Wouldn't it have been better to try out some youngsters and see how they take to Test cricket or is it that the selectors don't want any sort of challenge from the younger lot to the established players? Now that Ajit Agarkar has come on board as the Chairman of the selection committee, let's see if there is any change in the approach to building a team for the future or if it's going to be the same old story of the Indian team being the bridesmaid but not the bride,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

Kohli passed the difficult phases with aplomb: Sunil Gavaskar

Having said that, the veteran cricketer did not take away anything from Kohli's efforts in particular. Dismissed for 76 in the first Test, Kohli made up for it, scoring 29th century.

'Wouldn't it be better if ...': Sunil Gavaskar on India's Test squad selection

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Ishaan Kishan marked his Test debut against the West Indies. In the first test, he opened his account in 20 balls. But, in the second Test at Port of Spain, when he got a chance to bat at number 4 in place of Virat Kohli, Ishan hit the first fifty of his Test career. Ishan played only 33 balls. He completed his half-century with a six. After day 4 play, the Indian wicket-keeper thanked fellow cricketer Rishabh Pant for some batting tips. If reports are to be believed, Ishan also played the innings with Pant’s bat.

IND vs WI: Why Ishan Kishan thanked Rishabh Pant after maiden Test fifty

Ravichandran Ashwin snared two wickets for India but the West Indies showed a measure of resistance in reaching 76 for two after being set a daunting victory target of 365 on the fourth day of the second and final Test on Sunday.

A day packed with action at Queen's Park Oval in between short, sharp showers saw Mohammed Siraj scything through the lower half of the home side's first innings in the morning to earn his team a 183-run lead.

Blistering half-centuries by India captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan then facilitated a swift second innings declaration at 181 for two off just 24 overs.

Ashwin, destroyer of the West Indies in the first Test in Dominica with an 11-wicket match haul, removed home skipper Kraigg Brathwaite to a top-edged sweep and then had debutant Kirk McKenzie lbw without scoring.

However the obdurate Tagenarine Chanderpaul, very much in the mould of his celebrated father Shivnarine, stayed to the close with vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood.

A target of 289 more runs on a final day pitch should be a step too far for the Caribbean side, especially given the greater experience, competence and confidence of an Indian side pressing for a 2-0 series sweep at the start of the new World Test Championship cycle.

In humid conditions at the start of the day, Siraj claimed the last four wickets to finish with his best Test figures of five for 60 as the West Indies crashed from an overnight position of 229 for five to 255 all out, their last five wickets tumbling for just 26 runs.

Sharma then led the rush for runs with a 35-ball 50 before lunch.

He eventually fell for 57 while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal was a casualty of a similarly attacking 38 in the three overs which were bowled in the afternoon session.

That was the cue for Kishan to play his natural game and the left-hander did not disappoint, belting an unbeaten 52 off 34 balls with four fours and two sixes embellishing his maiden Test half-century.

"I knew what the team needed from me in a short span of time and the backing of Virat Kohli really relaxed me to play my game," said Kishan at the end of a long final session.

"The important thing tomorrow is execution. We have very good bowlers and senior players who always offer advice, but they aren't in a bad position themselves, so tomorrow is about showing what all our preparation for this series was about."

Debutant pacer Mukesh Kumar, who opened the floodgates for Siraj when he trapped Alick Athanaze leg-before in the first over of the day, was rewarded with a share of the new ball in the second innings.

However Brathwaite and Chanderpaul negotiated that challenge without any real alarms and it was left to the wily Ashwin to effect the breakthrough in the 18th over, making it four dismissals in four innings of the West Indies captain.

India vs WI, 2nd Test: Siraj, batsmen put visitors in control despite rain on day 4

India's Mohammed Siraj bowled one of the finest spells of his career, taking a five-wicket haul on day 4 of the second Test against West Indies. Siraj's brilliant bowling ensured India have a lead of 183 runs in the first innings. India then scored quick runs in their second innings and Ashwin took two wickets to give the visitors a chance for a clean sweep in the two-Test series.

Siraj, whose five-for orchestrated dramatic turn in the game, spoke on his plans after end of play before reporters and thanked India's strength and conditioning coach for his fitness.

India vs West Indies, 2nd Test: Mohammed Siraj speaks on who helped him take five-for on day 4

A day of turgid, rain-interrupted cricket saw the West Indies grinding their way to 229 for five in reply to India's first innings total of 438 at stumps on the third day of the second and final Test at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad on Saturday.

In adding 143 runs in 65 overs between seasonal showers the cricket certainly wasn't electrifying, although the determination of the home side to avoid a repeat of the capitulation of the first Test meant survival was prioritised over any attempt at entertainment.

Kraigg Brathwaite's innings of 75 typified the home side's purposeful, if unattractive, demeanour in the aftermath of their three-day innings humiliation in Dominica a week earlier.

Never one to be preoccupied with the aesthetics of batsmanship, the West Indies captain spent almost five hours at the crease in facing 235 deliveries, striking five fours and one six before being undone by a familiar foe.

Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed him twice at Windsor Park Stadium and the wily spinner again got the better of the right-hander, bowling the opening batsman between bat and pad midway through the afternoon.

Brathwaite had started the day with debutant Kirk McKenzie with the West Indies well positioned at 86 for one.

They made serene progress almost to the end of the first hour when McKenzie wafted at a wide delivery from fellow debutant Mukesh Kumar to give the 29-year-old his first Test wicket as he edged a catch to wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan.

With only one wicket in each of the first two sessions, India pressed hard for more success at the start of play after tea and were rewarded immediately when the usually attacking Jermaine Blackwood fell to a superb catch by Ajinkya Rahane at slip off left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja.

His innings of 20 occupied 92 deliveries.

When Mohammed Siraj uprooted Joshua da Silva's middle stump for his first wicket of the innings at 208 for five, the tourists felt they had the chance for more inroads before the light faded.

But former captain Jason Holder stayed with Alick Athanaze (37 not out) as the young left-hander negotiated a challenging period against the second new ball to carry the West Indies effort into the fourth morning.

"The batting conditions may not have been as tough as in Dominica but given the quality of bowling that they have they still made life difficult for us," said Athanaze at the end of the day.

"It was tricky at the end of the day against the new ball but we were able to hold on. It's no secret that we are trying to rebuild and it's all about enjoying the challenge that we face."

Ind vs WI, 2nd Test: Windies toil hard on rain-affected day 3

Former India pacer Zaheer Khan isn't much impressed with how Ishan Kishan got out during the second Test against West Indies. The wicketkeeper-batsman got his opportunity ahead of Srikar Bharat on the tour but hasn't been of much impact so far with the bat.

“He started the knock well. So he will be extremely disappointed because once you have played 30-40 deliveries and scored 25 runs, you have gotten your eye in. In Test matches, it is said that it is not a problem if you get out at the start,” Zaheer said while speaking on JioCinema.

Unlike the first Test, Kishan had a decent opportunity to bat long in the second Test with a solid platform laid by openers Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well. The left-hand batsman could score only 25 runs and got out to a shot which Zaheer described as a shot of T20 mindset.

“However, if you get out like this, especially the shot he played, the T20 or white-ball effect was seen in that, so he will be disappointed with that because he had an excellent opportunity to play a good knock today,” added the former India pacer.

India, nonetheless, finished strongly with a score of 438 in their first innings as Virat Kohli notched up his 29th Test century. Virat also broke Sachin Tendulkar's record of most centuries in first 500 international matches by one ton. Tendulkar had scored 75 of his 100 tons in the first 500 international games he had played while Kohli scored 76 in same number of matches. This was also Kohli's first ton in five years outside Asia.

As for bowling, India had scalped two West Indian wickets for a total of 117 runs before rain interrupted play on day 3. India currently lead the two-match series 1-0.

Ind vs WI: Former India pacer Zaheer Khan 'not happy' with Ishan Kishan getting out playing white-ball shot

Virat Kohli's 29th Test century highlighted a solid batting effort by India in getting to 438 batting first against the West Indies on the second day of the second and final Test at in Trinidad on Friday.

In response, on Queen's Park Oval pitch offering little assistance for the bowlers, the home side were well placed at 86 for one in reply at the close. A repeat of the swift demolition West Indies suffered in the first Test in Dominica a week earlier seemed unlikely.

With a sense of occasion befitting someone of his vast experience and considerable success, Kohli reached three figures within minutes of the start of the day from his overnight score of 88.

A square-driven boundary off fast bowler Shannon Gabriel took Kohli to the landmark in his 500th international match and his determined demeanour throughout the innings suggested a monumental effort was in the making by the 34-year-old.

He was undone by an error of judgement when he was run out for 121. Alzarri Joseph's direct hit at the non-striker's end from square-leg found Kohli just short of his ground as he scampered for a single.

Kohli's innings spanned four-and-a-half hours. He faced 206 deliveries, stroking 11 fours. He dominated an important 159-run fifth-wicket partnership with Ravindra Jadeja which restored India's ascendancy after a mid-afternoon wobble on the first day when they slipped to 182 for four.

"This was an opportunity for me to stand up for the team and these are the sorts of occasions where I switch on completely," said the former captain on his first Test hundred outside of India for more than four years.

"The stats and milestones and all of that are for others to talk about," he emphasised. "If I do it in a situation where the team needs me that is more special because in 15-20 years' time the milestones won't matter but what will remain is the impact you left on the field and how you were able to help your team."

Jadeja's was the other wicket to fall in the morning session for a composed 61. He was adjudged caught behind off Kemar Roach, television umpire Michael Gough overturning the "not out" verdict by on-field official Marais Erasmus.

Ravichandran Ashwin held the rest of the innings together before being last out to Roach for a 78-ball knock of 56. Roach and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican led the bowling effort with three wickets each.

Destroyer of the West Indies at Windsor Park Stadium, Ashwin, like all the Indian bowlers, found the placid pitch much less responsive.

It was only a poor shot by Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the final session which brought about his demise to Jadeja, leaving captain Kraigg Brathwaite and debutante Kirk McKenzie to carry the home side into the third day.

Kohli hits 29th Test century in his 500th international match but West Indies fight back

India legend Virat Kohli has added another feather to his cap. The right-handed batter scored a 29th Test century in the second Test against the West Indies. This was Kohli’s first ton on foreign soil after 55 months or 1677 days. The last century on foreign soil was scored by Virat in December 2018 at the Perth Stadium. This was Kohli's third Test century against the West Indies. Earlier, he had scored centuries in Northsound (200) and Rajkot Test (139). Kohli spoke about his 100 at Trinidad in a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India on social media.

“I have always enjoyed the atmosphere here. You can see all those 10-15 years of tough cricket here. Every time we come to the West Indies, Antigua, and Trinidad are my best places to play,” said Kohli. He added that just like Adelaide Oval is one of his favourite grounds to play purely for the atmosphere. “Few stadiums you walk in and you can feel the atmosphere. This venue is the same for me. There is a lot of history attached to this ground.”

The second and final match of the two-Test series between India and West Indies is being played at the Queen's Park Oval in the Port of Spain, Trinidad. Virat Kohli scored his 29th Test century in the game. It was his 76th century in all three formats.

There is a lot of history attached to this ground.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Team India (@indiancricketteam) Also Read: Ashes: Josh Hazlewood welcomes rain on day four as England eye to level series in Manchester Highest score in 500th international match This century is also special for Virat Kohli because it came in his 500th international match. IND vs WI: Virat Kohli speaks about scoring 29th Test century in Trinidad

Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja combined in an unbroken century partnership for India to regain the ascendancy over West Indies at 288 for four at stumps on Thursday, the opening day of the second and final Test.

After being put in to bat at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, India started strongly before faltering in the afternoon session.

After tea, Kohli played with the exaggerated caution of a man keen to leave a significant mark on the 500th international match. His unbeaten 87 (161 balls, eight fours) with the support of Jadeja (36 not out) put India back in command.

Their stand of 106 frustrated the Caribbean team in a long final session with captain Kraigg Brathwaite resorting to his own loopy off-breaks in search of a breakthrough.

It was a different tempo at the start, with skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal picking up where they left off in the first Test.

At Windsor Park Stadium a week earlier, they put on 229 for the first wicket to lay the platform for a crushing victory by an innings and 141 runs in three days.

This time they blazed 121 by lunch and added another 18 in the afternoon before Jason Holder finally brought much-needed discipline to the West Indies bowling.

He was rewarded with the wicket of Jaiswal for 57 via a low catch at deep gully by debutante batsman Kirk McKenzie.

That was the trigger for a mini-slide as Shubman Gill went caught behind Kemar Roach for 10, his second consecutive failure at number three. Sharma followed, bowled for 80 by a perfectly pitched delivery from left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican.

Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane seemed to have weathered the mid-afternoon storm only for Shannon Gabriel, the second change to the West Indies from the first Test, to uproot Rahane's off-stump on the stroke of tea.

"It felt like the heavens came down because not much was happening out there," said an exhausted Gabriel, reflecting on his lone wicket of the day.

"We were all over the shop in the first session and worked out our plans a lot better at lunch and got the reward. On a pitch like this, with hardly anything in it for the bowlers, we're happy to have taken four wickets."

India are giving a debut to right-arm fast-medium bowler Mukesh Kumar in place of seam-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

This is the 100th Test match between the West Indies and India since the first was played in Delhi in November 1948 at the start of the Caribbean side's historic inaugural tour to the sub-continent.

Despite being winless against their opponents for more than 21 years, the West Indies still lead India 30-23 in Test victories across the 99 matches.

WI vs IND 2023: Virat Kohli puts India on top on first day of second West Indies Test

West Indies applied the brakes to a runaway Indian start with the visitors reaching tea on Thursday at 182 for four after being put in to bat on the first day of the second and final Test.

After openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal belted 121 runs in the morning session at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, the tourists lost four wickets for the addition of 61 runs after lunch. It was the first session of the series to decisively go the home side's way.

Thrashed by an innings and 141 runs in three days in the first Test in Dominica a week earlier and seemingly in the same listless mood in the morning, West Indies' invigorated effort brought swift rewards in the afternoon.

Jaiswal, who marked his Test debut with a disciplined, determined 171 in the first Test, fell for 57 to a catch at deep gully by debutante Kirk McKenzie off Jason Holder to break the opening stand at 139.

McKenzie replaced Raymon Reifer in the batting line-up from the first Test while fast bowler Shannon Gabriel came in at the expense of off-spinner Rahkeem Cornwall as the other change to the Caribbean side.

India are giving a debut to right-arm fast-medium bowler Mukesh Kumar in place of seam bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur.

Shubman Gill's move to number three again failed to bring the desired result. He was caught behind off Kemar Roach for 10. Sharma was undone on 80 by an excellent delivery from left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican which spun past the Indian captain's outside edge to hit off stump.

Gabriel, who struggled for control in his earlier spells, capped off an excellent two hours for the West Indies when he sent Ajinkya Rahane's off stump flying off the inside edge in the final over before tea.

Former captain Virat Kohli, who is playing his 500th international match for India, will resume after tea on a watchful 18 off 44 balls.

This is the 100th Test match between the West Indies and India since the first was played in Delhi in November, 1948.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

West Indies hit back on first day of second India Test

Virat Kohli achieved another record when India stepped on the field to take on West Indies in the opening day of the second and final Test in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad on Thursday (July 20). Kohli became only the tenth player to enter the 500-match club when India were asked to bat first in the series finale, being held in the Caribbean island.

Among Indians, Kohli became only the fourth player to reach the coveted club. Sachin Tendulkar leads the overall list (664) whereas MS Dhoni (538) and current head coach Rahul Dravid (509) occupy the second and third spot, respectively, in the list featuring Indians. On Thursday, Kohli attained the fourth position in his landmark appearance.

Debuting in 2008, Kohli soon became India's go-to-batter across formats and has amassed over 25,000 international runs along with 75 tons. On Day One of the second Test, Kohli came out to bat at 153 for 2 and saw his side lose two quick wickets before the tea break. However, he remained undeterred, looked focused and in complete control, ran hard between wickets to take India to 288 for 4 at stumps, being unbeaten on 87 along with Ravindra Jadeja (34*).

During the 72nd over, Kohli-Jadeja ran hard to add two more runs to the scoreboard. While completing the second run, Kohli realised he was in danger and, thus, dived to save himself. His efforts bore fruits as he survived and his commitment was hailed by former cricketer-turned-commentator Ian Bishop.

Bishop reflected on Kohli's commitment and intensity when play was stopped momentarily. He said, "Absolutely superb. That's the sort of desperation you love to see incorporated in your batting and batsmanship. This is a Test match. You sometimes see guys doing this in desperation in a one-day or white-ball scenario, but here is a guy who has been around for 500 international games and in a Test match, knows the value of every run. Putting his body on the line and diving to make sure he's in. That tells you how badly he wants whatever he gets out of this innings."

It is to be noted that play was halted for a brief period for Kohli, who was attended by the team physio after his desperate dive. After preventing a run-out, the 34-year-old signalled for the physio instantly. The former Indian captain's jersey was in a mess and he also did some damage to his already-taped finger. However, Kohli put his body on the line for the team's cause.

'I wish I could get every young batter in the Caribbean - male and female - running like that...'

Thus, Bishop was in awe of Kohli and added, "I wish I could get every young batter in the Caribbean - male and female - running like that and not just sitting back waiting for boundaries. You know how much you can top up your scores but this sort of intensity... I have seen a number of batters no desperate enough to dive and commit themselves like that. This is a good example."

Day One proved to be memorable for Kohli. Having entered the 500-match club, he also achieved more milestones during his unbeaten 87. The right-hander became India's fifth-highest scorer in Tests, fifth-highest run getter in international cricket and also the fifth-highest run-scorer by a batter at No. 4 in whites.

Kohli will aim to get to his 29th Test century -- which will be his second of 2023 -- when Day Two kicks off in Trinidad on Friday (July 21).

Virat Kohli will play his 500th match

Former India skipper Virat Kohli is on the verge of reaching a milestone in the next game. In the second Test against West Indies, Kohli will play 500th international match of his career. Kohli has so far featured in 110 Tests, 274 ODIs and 115 T20I matches. Apart from this, Kohli also has a chance to surpass former India batter Virender Sehwag in terms of runs in Test cricket. Kohli has so far scored 8555 runs in 110 matches in Test cricket. Sehwag, on the other hand, has 8586 runs to his name in 104 Test matches. Virat needs only 31 runs to overtake Sehwag. Kohli produced a fine knock of 76 in the opening Test against West Indies.

India’s preparations for the second Test

After having a positive result in the first Test, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will now be eager to carry forward the brilliance in the final game of the series. Team India currently have a lead of 1-0 in the two-match Test series against the Caribbean opponents. "In Dominica (first Test venue), we had a clear idea when we saw the pitch and knew the conditions. Here we don't have clarity as there is talk of rain, but I don't think there will be drastic changes. But whatever conditions are available, based on that, we will make that decision,” Rohit was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda ahead of the final Test. Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was adjudged Man of the Match in the series opener for his superb knock of 171.

India had a new number three in Shubman Gill in over a decade during the first Test against West Indies. Gill had replaced India stalwart Cheteshwar Pujara for the slot and those can be pretty big shoes to fill. While the suggestion to bat at number three came from Gill, he could not make much impact in his maiden innings, scoring 6 off 11 balls.

India batting coach Vikram Rathour, speaking to reporters after India's win in the first Test, explained the rationale behind Gill asking to bat at one down position.

"Three openers were supposed to play, so one had to go at No. 3 and the proposal came from Shubman's end as his rationale was that he had played all his cricket for Punjab and India A at either No. 3 or 4 and that's his real slot in longer format is that," Rathour said at a press conference.

While Gill may have failed to leave any mark in a Test where top three of four players from India scored at least a fifty, Rathour was confident of Gill's abilities at number three.

"We can't judge him on basis of one innings. He has a lot of time. He has the technique and temperament to play time if required and can also play an attacking game when a move on is needed. He can move the game forward. That is what we need at No. 3 as it can be advantageous," Rathour added.

Notably, Yashasvi Jaiswal (171) and Rohit Sharma (103) had scored a century each as openers while Virat Kohli scored 76 at number four as India amassed 421 runs in their first innings.

Young Jaiswal was given Player of the Match award for scoring a ton in his debut game. Apart from him, veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin took 12 wickets in the match.

Ind vs WI: India batting coach Vikram Rathour opens up on Shubman Gill's failure at no. 3

Team India thrashed West Indies by an innings and 141 runs in the two-match Test series opener in Dominica. The second and final Test kicks off on July 20 in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In recent years, India have dominated the red-ball format and also reached the knockouts in all ICC events, barring the 2021 T20 World Cup, but have failed to win the silverware.

Little Master Sunil Gavaskar recently took a dig at modern-day Indian captains and how they enjoy enough security despite not being able to win ICC titles or facing heavy defeats. Gavaskar feels there should be more accountability to be taken by the captains and coaches of the team.

'This has been happening since 2011'

"Whether you win or lose, the captain knows that he is going to be there. This has not been a recent case, mind you. This has been happening since 2011. There have been results where we have been wiped out in the series 0-4, 0-4 but the captain hasn't changed," said former India captain Gavaskar while speaking to the Indian Express Idea Exchange.

Gavaskar's statement can perhaps be seen as a question towards MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper. While Dhoni enjoyed good success as a white-ball captain, India were miserable during their away tours of England (in 2011/12 and 2014), Australia (in 2011/12) and South Africa and New Zealand (in 2013/14) under the former Indian wicketkeeper.

However, Dhoni retained the Test captaincy until he retired from the format in late 2014 during the Australia tour. From thereon, Virat Kohli took over and led India to the No. 1 ranking (with the team faring well in away tours as well).

Similarly, the likes of Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not led India to an ICC title after the end of Dhoni's successful era as the white-ball skipper. However, Kohli remained Test and T20I captain till the time he decided to step aside, but was sacked as the ODI skipper.

After India's 2021-23 WTC final loss to Australia, many raised fingers at Rohit and head coach Rahul Dravid as well. However, the duo continue to hold their respective posts. But things might change if India fail to win the ICC ODI World Cup, at home, later this year.
