India leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was one of the strong contenders to be included in the ODI World Cup squad but unfortunately missed out when the initial 15-man team was announced. An injury to Axar Patel in the Asia Cup 2023 opened up another chance for him but the slot went to veteran off spinner Ravi Ashwin.

The leg-spinner did feel a bit bad but believes in moving on in life. Chahal made the comments while speaking to Wisden India on his snub from India's ODI World Cup squad.

“I understand that only fifteen players can be a part, because it’s a World Cup, where you can’t take 17 or 18,” Chahal said. “I do feel a little bad, but my motto in life is to move on. I’m used to it now… it’s been three World Cups (laughs). ”

Talking about the competitiveness among his peers for a spot in the team, Chahal said that he doesn't think too much about it and that he's confident of playing if he performs well.

“I don’t think too much in that sense, because I know if I perform well, I’ll play,” Chahal said. “Someone or the other will eventually replace you in the future. That time will come someday.

“I take up the challenge in this way: definitely, they are doing well and I appreciate that. The main goal is that India should win, because this is not an individual game. If I am part of the team or not, they are like my brothers. Obviously, I support India. I like the challenge: it tells me I need to work hard so that I come back,” added the leggie.&nbsp;

Chahal made his ODI debut for India in 2016 and has played 72 games so far, taking 121 wickets including a couple of five-wicket hauls.

Kohli hit his first century since 2019 in last year's Asia Cup against Afghanistan which was played in T20 format. That was also Kohli's first and only T20 century. After that, Kohli scored a Test ton against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series earlier this year before unleashing himself in the ODIs.

Every since the century against Afghanistan, Kohli has scored 1887 runs at an average of 55.57 in 40 games across formats that also includes seven centuries.

Notably, Kohli is also one of the two players to feature in both 2011 and 2023 squad with the other being Ravichandran Ashwin who made a dramatic comeback to the squad at the last moment.

India start their World Cup campaign against Australia on October 8 and play two warm-up games before that, that is, against England on September 30 and Netherlands on October 3.

World number one&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;player Novak Djokovic is a six-time winner of the Rome Masters but on Wednesday he swapped his racket for a set of golf clubs to appear in the All Star Match in the build-up to the 44th Ryder Cup.

The Serbian, who claimed a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title by winning the U.S. Open this month, was playing alongside world number one golfer with disabilities Kipp Popert as part of Colin Montgomerie's team which also featured Gareth Bale.

"It's such an honour, a golden opportunity for a once in a lifetime experience," the nervous-looking 36-year-old said on the first tee surrounded by an enormous grandstand. "Thanks to all the fans for coming and putting a bit of extra pressure on us on the first tee. It's a unique experience."

With hundreds of fans in the stands and many more lining the fairway, Djokovic initially walked out to address his ball with a&nbsp;tennis&nbsp;racket, before switching to a driver. After a couple of practice swings were greeted with cries of "oles", he sent his ball down the first fairway, puffing out his cheeks with relief and thumping his heart.

Djokovic and England's Popert were up against Spain's F1 driver Carlos Sainz who recently won the Singapore Grand Prix and Italian G4D golfer Tommaso Perrino.

England's 2019 World Cup campaign star Ben Stokes thinks that 'it's not arrogant' to say England are a good team and have a good chance to defend their title. The ODI World Cup starts next month on October 5 in India with England starting their title defence on the opening day against New Zealand.&nbsp;

“I don’t think it’s arrogance to say we’re a very good team,” Stokes told The Guardian in a conversation.

The Englishman, who has come out of retirement for the marquee tournament, also said that England are one of the title contenders and they have an edge over other teams in terms of experience of huge games.

“We’re in the mix. And what we now have in our favour, I think, is experience of huge games – an edge against sides who don’t play as many. I know franchise T20 cricket means a lot more players have been exposed to those situations; it’s great for that.

"But it doesn’t come close to wearing your country’s shirt, billions watching, knowing if you lose, you’re out.

Ben Stokes says 'not arrogant' to consider England ODI World Cup title contender

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has been cleared to join the Kiwi ODI World Cup squad. The pacer had fractured his right thumb in the fourth and final ODI against England last month and flew&nbsp;back home afterwards.

Southee had surgery on his fractured thumb and continues to recover from the injury ahead of the Black Caps' opening match on the first day of the World Cup against England on October 5. If fit to play, it would be Southee's fourth appearance in the World Cup, having previously played in 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions of the quadrennial event.

Southee has been a stalwart of New Zealand cricket since making his debut in 2008. The pacer has played in 157 ODIs, taking 214 wickets with a best of 7/33. He also has batting abilities and has one fifty to his name in 50-over cricket. In ODI World Cups, Southee has 34 wickets to his name in 18 matches.

Southee is&nbsp;not the only injury concern for New Zealand who fell short of winning the World Cup last time against England in the final under dramatic (or unfortunate) circumstances. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson is also under a cloud of doubt for their campaign opener after suffering an ACL injury in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Williamson has also been added to the 15-man Kiwi squad and hopes to be fit for the game against England. This will be the fourth appearance for Williamson as well in the World Cup.

Currently, New Zealand are in Bangladesh for the three-match ODI series and are expected to fly to India soon to take part in the warm-up games. Kiwis, like all other teams, play two warm-up games ahead of the World Cup - against Pakistan on September 29 in Hyderabad and South Africa on October 2 in Thiruvananthapuram.

England's national selector Luke Wright on Monday, September 18 had said Roy won't be judged for not taking part in the Ireland series and he'll still be the top reserve.

"He wasn't expecting to be in that Ireland squad and then to get the news that he was missing out on the World Cup all came as a bit of a hammer blow," Wright said. "We've made it apparent to Jason that we won't judge him differently for that position as the spare batter at the top of the order whether he plays against Ireland or not."

The whole selection drama started when England's Test skipper Ben Stokes decided to make a comeback to the ODI squad just ahead of the quadrennial event. Stokes, notably, had retired from the ODIs last year but made a U-turn on the decision. Stokes' decision put England's up-and-coming star Harry Brook's place under a cloud of doubt.

Many former English cricketers called for Brook's inclusion in the squad but leaving out Roy was not an easy decision. Jason was their one of the top performers at the World Cup winning 2019 campaign but so was Stokes and eventually Roy got the short end of the stick.

Australian batter Steve Smith is feeling 'no pain' in his wrist after taking a cortisone injection as he gears up for the three-match ODI series against India ahead of ODI World Cup. Smith is part of both India and World Cup squad for Australia after missing out South Africa ODI series due to wrist injury. The batter had suffered a blow to his wrist during the Lord's Test in Ashes earlier this year and had subsequently missed out on South Africa's white-ball tour.

"I was in a brace for a couple of weeks, just trying to limit the movement, which once I got that off it hadn't really made a big difference to be honest," said Smith to Nine newspapers at an event in Sydney. Doull, however, agreed that India have loads of talent but they don't go out there and take risks and that has costed them in the world cups.

Afghanistan have called up fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq back to the ODI fold for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Naveen played his last 50-over game for his country in January 2021 against Ireland and is making a comeback to the ODI side after more than two years.

New Zealand have six ODIs scheduled ahead of the World Cup in India - three against England and three against Bangladesh and Milne is expected to miss at least half of them. The development came after his injury was confirmed post scans following experiencing tightness in a training session.

Fast bowler Ben Lister, however, has been added in the New Zealand squad for the remainder of the England series. Speaking on the injury, New Zealand coach Gary Stead said: "We have short turnarounds between these matches and want to try and look after the players as much as possible with the upcoming schedule.

"With Ben already here in England, it meant we could have him join the squad at short notice without the recovery time of a bowler joining from New Zealand mid-series. Ben impressed us in the UAE and [in the] warm-up matches in England, and will continue to learn being around some senior players in the touring group," he added.

Notably, Lister was expected to play for Kent in County Championship. The pacer had made his international debut against Pakistan earlier this year but has not been included for the upcoming Bangladesh tour.

Bangladesh, which is all but out of Asia Cup 2023 after loss against Sri Lanka on Saturday, September 9, are scheduled to host Kiwis from September 21. The series ends on September 26 and the two teams depart to India for the World Cup next day.

The reason Shakib gave while asking for the rest was to keep players 'fit and healthy' ahead of the big tournament which will involve a lot of travel. Bangladesh and New Zealand will also be playing two warm up matches on September 29 and October 2, respectively.

"We will try a few things in the three ODIs against New Zealand," Shakib said.

"If we can get one or two players from there who can fit into the team [later], it will be better for the team. Everyone has a chance [to play]. I personally believe that those who played in the Asia Cup could be rested from the New Zealand series, especially those who are confirmed for the World Cup.

The Kiwis are also battling with injury issues as their fast bowler Adam Milne has been ruled of the the ongoing ODI series against England and is doubtful for the Bangladesh matches as well as ODI World Cup.

The former batter, however, said that it won't be fair to compare Jadeja to Yuvraj Singh. "There is a very good chance, it’s almost a certainty that he will play all the World Cup matches. India can’t do without him. Axar Patel will be there in the reserves but Jadeja will be the first-choice spin-bowling all-rounder. If the pitch is rough, if you have got a quality opposition, he will finish in 10 overs," Manjrekar told Star Sports.

“But the batting all-rounder we had in 2011, Yuvraj Singh. It's not fair to compare his batting with Jadeja. So I see him more as a bowling all-rounder with somebody who can be a threat at No. 7 or No.8. His white-ball career has changed completely in the last few years,” said Manjrekar.

Manjrekar, who once called Jadeja a 'bits-and-pieces' cricketer, said that in the last few seasons the left-arm spinner has been bowling his 10 overs in limited overs which shows how 'good a bowler' he is.

"Earlier, he was a formidable Test bowler. In the early part of his one-day career, he wasn't even completing his 10 overs. But in the last few seasons, you see him bowling his 10 overs. That's a best indicator of how good a bowler you are. All you have to do is see how many times you bowl your 10 overs. That's something that you get with Jadeja now. He is a much-improved white-ball cricketer, which he was not 3- years before that," Manjrekar added.

Jadeja has been included in the 15-man squad announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on September 5. Axar Patel also features in the side alongside Jadeja.

After Australia, India will face Afghanistan on October 11 at the national capital New Delhi, and then lock horns with arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad. From thereon, the Men in Blue will take on Bangladesh, in Pune, on October 19, New Zealand on October 22 in Dharamshala, and England on October 29 in Lucknow, respectively.&nbsp;

The deadline to announce the initial squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup is September 5 and former India opener Wasim Jaffer thinks that Tilak Varma should get a nod ahead of Suryakumar Yadav. India will play against Nepal in Asia Cup 2023 on Monday, September 4 ahead of the squad announcement. Both Varma and Yadav were not part of India's Asia Cup opener against Pakistan.

"I will probably take out Prasidh Krishna and it would be a tough choice between Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav. I'll pick Tilak Varma even though he has not played ODI cricket at all for India. But looking at how he bats and plays his cricket, I think he is more suited to one-day cricket. Suryakumar does have a lot of promise and he has not cracked the code of ODI cricket despite getting a lot of opportunities," Jaffer said while talking to ESPNcricinfo.

Jaffer, however, added that the only concern the India team has is about Jasprit Bumrah's ability to bowl 10 overs - something which he hasn't done since coming back to the team post back injury. During the match against Pakistan, India couldn't bowl as rain didn't let the second innings take place.

"Only concern was Jasprit Bumrah if he could bowl 10 overs, which we did not get to see. But I am hoping he is alright, because he played well in Ireland. KL Rahul has not played yet, but I am hoping once he passes the fitness test, he will be fine. Whether he gets to play or not we will see," Jaffer said.

As for the Nepal game, Jaffer said there won't be many changes in the XI from the team that played against Pakistan. Jasprit Bumrah, however, won't be available for the game as he travelled back&nbsp;home for the birth of his first child. The pacer is expected to be back for the next round though.

Australia batsman Glenn Maxwell is not 'under pressure' to play in the upcoming ODI series in India ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup, starting from October 5. The explosive batsman, who was part of Australia's T20I squad in the recently-concluded South Africa series, did not play any of the matches after experiencing soreness in his ankle. The pain was in the same leg in which Maxwell had suffered a gruesome injury last November.

"I still want to play some part of that India series," Maxwell said during the Big Bash League's (BBL) overseas draft on Sunday, September 4. "But I'm not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don't want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they've got a bit of extra time before the World Cup. So instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament."

Maxwell, meanwhile, is expected to make it to Australia's initial 15-member World Cup squad for which the deadline is September 5. The date to announce the final squad is September 28 and Australia are scheduled to play a five-match series against South Africa before travelling to India for three-ODI series and the World Cup.&nbsp;

Maxwell has, however, taken a cortisone injection to deal with the pain but said he couldn't have predicted how sore his ankle going to be once he got to South Africa.

"I don't think I could have predicted how sore I was going to be once I got to South Africa," he said. "But it was one of those things. Even when I went to train that day, I still felt fine. There was nothing wrong. Something just got impinged. I think one of the tendons around my ankle was a little bit inflamed, there's a bit of swelling, so it kept on catching which meant it just gave me a bit of pain. Hopefully, the cortisone takes care of that and I can get back up and running to where I was just before I went to South Africa," he added.

Australia, nonetheless, won the T20I series 3-0 and are preparing for the ODI series now but Maxwell won't be part of it as he visits home for the birth of his first child.

Australia batsman Glenn Maxwell is not 'under pressure' to play in the upcoming ODI series in India ahead of the ICC ODI World Cup, starting from October 5. The explosive batsman, who was part of Australia's T20I squad in the recently-concluded South Africa series, did not play any of the matches after experiencing soreness in his ankle. The pain was in the same leg in which Maxwell had suffered a gruesome injury last November. "I still want to play some part of that India series," Maxwell said during the Big Bash League's (BBL) overseas draft on Sunday, September 4. "But I'm not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don't want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they've got a bit of extra time before the World Cup. So instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament." The date to announce the final squad is September 28 and Australia are scheduled to play a five-match series against South Africa before travelling to India for three-ODI series and the World Cup. Maxwell has, however, taken a cortisone injection to deal with the pain but said he couldn't have predicted how sore his ankle going to be once he got to South Africa. "I don't think I could have predicted how sore I was going to be once I got to South Africa," he said. "But it was one of those things. Even when I went to train that day, I still felt fine. There was nothing wrong. Something just got impinged. I think one of the tendons around my ankle was a little bit inflamed, there's a bit of swelling, so it kept on catching which meant it just gave me a bit of pain. Hopefully, the cortisone takes care of that and I can get back up and running to where I was just before I went to South Africa," he added. Australia, nonetheless, won the T20I series 3-0 and are preparing for the ODI series now but Maxwell won't be part of it as he visits home for the birth of his first child. “More than anything else, luck of the day is very important and if you look at the teams (in 1983, 1985 and 2011), they all had top-class all-rounders. You had batters who could bowl 7-8-9 overs and bowlers who could bat down the order. That was the biggest plus of those teams. You see MSD’s team also: Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virender Sehwag could all bowl. It was the biggest plus. So, any team which has all-rounders (will hold the edge)," said Gavaskar on the sidelines of an event.

“You look at England who won last year's T20 World Cup, look at the all-rounders they had. So, all-rounders are the key element,” he added.

The former skipper was also asked to assess current captain Rohit Sharma's legacy so far to which he said that winning the upcoming Asia Cup and World Cup will definitely boost his status.

“At the end of the day, you are judged by the number of trophies you have won, the number of wins you have. Winning these two tournaments will make him one of India’s greatest skippers,” said Gavaskar.

Before the ICC ODI World Cup, Asia Cup is going to be played from August 30 and India start their campaign from September 2 in Kandy, Sri Lanka against Pakistan.

The HCA has now written to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) saying that it needs gap to host the two games, reported media outlet the Indian Express.

The request from HCA comes after Hyderabad Police flagged security issues in hosting games on consecutive days. Earlier, Pakistan-Sri Lanka fixture was slated for October 12 but a change in schedule made it a consecutive game for Hyderabad.

The schedule for the quadrennial event which is marked to begin on October 5 was first released on June 28 - 100 days before the tournament - a historic late announcement. The schedule then underwent changes as some matches clashed with festivals in the host cities during the game time.

A couple of matches which were revised in the schedule were India vs Pakistan from October 15 to October 14 as the former date coincides with Navaratri - a huge festival in host city Ahmedabad. This change prompted BCCI to reschedule Pakistan's match in Hyderabad from October 12 to October 10. The logic for change was to ensure enough time availability for rest, travel and practice before the next game.

Another important game which went under date change in revised schedule was England vs Pakistan in Kolkata. The game, in the original schedule, was marked for November 12 - the day of Kali Puja - one of the biggest festivals in Kolkata. After the host city police cited security concerns, the game date was changed to November 11.

England's one of the most talented young batsmen Harry Brook opened up about being snubbed from the defending champions' provisional world cup 2023 squad. The batsman, who was dropped after England Test skipper Ben Stokes reversed his ODI retirement, called his snubbing 'disappointing.'

“Obviously it’s disappointing but I can’t do anything about it now,” Brook said after the match between London Spirit vs Northern Superchargers during The Hundred. “You’ve just got to move on. I’m trying not to think about it anymore.”

“I’ve not had much conversation with Matthew [Mott] or Jos [Buttler]. They said with Stokesy coming back I was probably going to miss out this time. He is one of the best players to ever play cricket, so I can’t really complain, can I?,” Brook added.

Former India head player and coach Ravi Shastri has backed 'seasoned captain' Rohit Sharma ahead of the two-time winners' campaign in the much-awaited ICC ODI World Cup 2023 edition. The mega event will be entirely hosted by India in October-November, with defending champions England taking on New Zealand in the tournament opener on October 05. Team India will open their campaign versus five-time winners Australia in Chennai on October 08. They will face arch-rivals Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Shastri said while speaking on Star Sports, “I think he is a seasoned captain. Come the World Cup, he will up the ante. Bilaterals are one thing. When it comes to big tournaments, you switch on in a different manner. He knows the nucleus of the players. It is about him ensuring that everyone in that batting lineup knows that they don't own batting positions."

"You've got to be flexible with your batting ladder. No matter who the name of the player is. You do not own positions. You got to have flexibility. That is paramount, and use the right guys against the right oppositions,” Shastri further asserted.

Under Rohit, India will start as one of the favourites for the coveted title despite their mixed run across formats in recent times. Rohit-led India fell flat in Asia Cup 2022 (held in T20I format), bowed out of the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in Australia, lost ODIs to Bangladesh (in the Bangla Tigers' den), 50-over home series to the Aussies and also came second in the WTC final (losing to Pat Cummins &amp; Co.). India, under Hardik Pandya, also conceded their first-ever T20I series when they recently lost to West Indies.&nbsp;

In addition, the former head coach believes that the India think tank has a group of 18-20 players that have been shortlisted for the home ODI WC. "The think tank would have thought about a group of 18 or 20 players at least four or five months before the World Cup and then given opportunities to each one of them, kept an eye on the injuries too, you know, whichever players who were part of the mix who got injuries and just come back, and then pick the right guys,” Shastri added.
