Delhi Capitals (DC) continued their losing streak as they lost their fifth game in a row in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition as they went down to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday (April 15). Opting to bowl first, David Warner-led DC restricted RCB for 174 for 6 with Mitchell Marsh (2 for 18) and Kuldeep Yadav (2 for 23) being the top performer with the ball. In reply, DC only managed 151 for 9 to remain winless in the tournament after five games and are languishing at the bottom.

After the game, many expected DC's head coach Ricky Ponting -- former Australian captain -- to give a earful to his players. However, Ponting chose to look at the brighter side of things and gave a special mention to Indian wrist spinner Kuldeep for his sparkling performance. In DC's previous game, the 28-year-old had been expensive and returned with figures of 2-0-23-0, however, he turned the tables emphatically versus RCB to end with 4-0-23-2.

'Don't you ever say sorry to me or anyone for what happens on the cricket field'

Thus, Ponting told Kuldeep while addressing the team in the dressing room, "Good, really good bowling performance. They challenged us early; they got off to a flier. Our attitude and commitment came back, we dragged it back. Kuldeep, where are you mate? Disappointed last game, weren't you? You actually said sorry to me at the end of the game. " He added, with DC's Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly in attendance, "So mate, don't you ever say sorry to me or anyone for what happens on the cricket field. What I want you to do is bounce back strong and today with 2/23 off four, it was an outstanding spell of bowling. Well done."

Kuldeep has so far accounted for four scalps in five games. Further, Ponting went on to laud Lalit Yadav, Axar Patel and Mitchell Marsh before mentioning where DC can improve as a unit.

He opined, "Lalit, I thought you did a good job with the ball as well buddy. Two sixes in that one over otherwise the reason we bought you in today was to bowl those hard overs in the Powerplay, just outside it, and you did a great job as well. Axar you were also great. 1/25 off three and our golden boy Mitchell Marsh, who picks up 2/18 of his couple overs as well. So well done."

Punter added, "Fielding was good. But it was good without being great. Whenever we take the field next time, I want to take the fielding from being good to great. I want you to go about your own preparations, look at your own vision, work on your own game plan and play it your way. One thing I said about the game, I know you keep on working hard. Keep doing all the right things, then eventually it's going to change. That's the only way we will be able to go forward boys – simple, altogether, as a group, work hard together for each other to turn things around."

Problems remain aplenty for DC after five straight defeats. They will now face the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Thursday (April 20).

IPL 2023: 'Don't you ever...:' - DC coach Ricky Ponting to Kuldeep Yadav after loss vs RCB

Delhi Capitals are having a nightmare of a season with five losses in as many matches. This despite their skipper David Warner being one of the top run scorers across the league, having amassed 228 runs in five matches.

The major problems for Delhi have been at the top-order where Prithvi Shaw's 34 runs in five matches have put undue pressure on his peers, resulting in either slow run-rate or wickets. With no hope of DC getting better anytime soon as well, a report in media agency Press Trust of India (PTI) has claimed that the DC owners are mulling to trim the coaching staff.

Currently, DC's coaching staff includes six names with Ricky Ponting being the head coach. Other names in the list are James Hopes (assistant coach), Ajit Agarkar (assistant coach), Shane Watson (assistant coach), Pravin Amre (assistant coach) and Biju George (assistant coach). Apart from them, former India skipper Sourav Ganguly serves as the franchise Director of Cricket.

A source, according to the report, told PTI that poor results are going to have its repercussions, although no changes would be done mid-season.

"Obviously, nothing will happen mid season but the poor result for two successive season will have it's share of repercussions when JSW and GMR, the two co-owners sit back and take stock of the season," the source aware of the developments informed PTI.

"So you will certainly not have this jumbo coaching staff next season for sure. There will be a few heads that might roll," the source added further.

In their opening match of the season, Delhi Capitals conceded 193 against Lucknow and manage just 143 while chasing. In the next match DC could manage only 162 in their 20 overs which Gujarat Titans chased with six wickets in hand.

Bowling first in their third match against Rajasthan Royals, DC bowlers were taken to cleaners for 199 in 20 overs but the batsmen could only score 142 in reply. Playing against Mumbai Indians, DC folded for 172 and Mumbai chased the target in exact 20 overs with six wickets in hand.

Coming into the match against RCB, DC's batting faltered once more as they scored just 151 in 20 overs while chasing 175.

IPL 2023: DC coaching staff might face axe after current season, claims report

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batsman Virat Kohli is in sublime form this IPL season having already scored 214 runs in four matches so far. The batter had also managed to rack up three fifty plus scores with the latest coming in the match against Delhi Capitals.

Kohli, who scored 50 off 34, got out a juicy thigh-high full-toss ball from Lalit Yadav and was absolutely livid with himself for making a mess out of a scoring opportunity. RCB eventually managed 172 runs in their 20 overs.

“I was quite disappointed that I got out to a full toss. I’ve been playing really well. I wanted to make sure that after fifty, I was targeting 30-35 runs off the next 10 balls. That’s how I play. That would’ve helped us get past 200," said Kohli at the post-match presentation.

The batsman, however, judged the pitch correctly as he informed his teammates in the dugout, saying it slowed down considerably.

“One thing I mentioned to the guys in the change room was that 175 was enough on this pitch. It slowed down considerably when the spinners came on. Even the balls to hit off the back foot off Kuldeep were holding up, unlike the other games we played. We did well to get to that score and had the belief it was enough,” Kohli said at the presentation.

“When I’ve played my best cricket, those are the balls I’ve put away consistently (length balls on the up). That helps me to put pressure on the bowlers. When I put away their best balls, they’re going to try to do something else. I back myself to hit good balls and the best bowlers in the opposition," he added.

This was RCB's first win post two consecutive losses after winning their season opener against Mumbai Indians. Kohli also admitted that they let it slip last couple of matches but happy to get two points.

“That’s how I motivate myself to play out there. Very happy to get two points. We kind of let it slip away in the last two games. For us to bounce back like this was very crucial. That was a different mentality and phase altogether (T20 World Cup 2016 semis). I was in a space where I felt I could hit any ball. I back myself to hit good shots. When they come off, they look good,” he concluded.

IPL 2023: RCB's Virat Kohli spills beans on how he motivates himself on the field after 50 vs DC

Delhi Capitals slumped to their fifth defeat on the trot in IPL 2023 with their latest loss coming against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With five losses in five matches this season, DC are the only team with no points.

Speaking on Delhi's woes, former India opening batsman Virender Sehwag blasted their head coach Ricky Ponting, saying that he should be held responsible for the team's losses. The former opener also said that Delhi are currently confused about what they should be doing to change their fortune.

“I think I said before that Punjab have passed on the axe to Delhi, so now the axe has reached Delhi. When a team losses, the coaches are credited, so when the team losses, they should be held responsible. Even we said so many times that Ponting has done a brilliant job, took them to the finals, they now reach the playoffs almost every year now. He took all those credits, now he has to take this credit as well. This is not the Indian team where they take credit for the wins and for the losses someone else is blamed. There is zero role of a coach in an IPL team. The big responsibility is man-management and to give the players that confidence, but in the end, a coach looks good only when the team performs well which Delhi haven't done it at all. I feel Delhi has reached that point where they are confused what should they do to change their fortune,” said Sehwag in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

Notably, Delhi's batting line up has performed very poorly despite their skipper David Warner scoring 228 runs in five matches and being second on the list of most runs scored this season.

Apart from Warner and all-rounder Axar Patel, no Delhi batsman has been able to figure out their batting this season. The most notable name which has failed to perform is opener Prithvi Shaw who has managed just 34 runs in five innings so far.

Shaw's constant failures has not only put extra pressure on Warner to play sheet anchor role, which in turn has affected his strike rate, but raised questions on his place in the playing XI as well.

IPL 2023: Sehwag calls on head coach Ponting to take 'CREDIT' for DC's woeful run after fifth straight defeat

Delhi Capitals batsman Prithvi Shaw was backed by both DC head coach Ricky Ponting and DC Director of Sourav Ganguly to have a bumper IPL 2023 before the start of the season. Five matches into the season, Shaw's score read 12,7,0,15 and 0.

Shaw's abysmal form with the bat has meant that DC never got a decent start at the top - a major factor that has played its part in the team losing five matches on the trot.

The team management, however, has backed Prithvi Shaw, who definitely has loads of talent, with DC assistant coach Shane Watson going on to say that players like Shaw don't fall off a tree.

"Prithvi is as skilled as any other batter in India. And everyone has seen that from the time he made his Test debut. The biggest thing for him is just to be able to allow himself to access the skills with no fear of making a mistake or getting out, said Watson.

"He can take down the best bowlers in the world and in all conditions. A player like Prithvi does not just fall out of a tree", he added.

Speaking on Shaw's latest dismissal for which the batsman has no one but himself to blame, Watson said, "Prithvi came off after sitting for 20 overs until the impact player rules came in. Otherwise he would be out there running around ready to take off and run that a little bit faster."

Notably, Prithvi Shaw had ran himself out on the fourth ball of Delhi innings as they chased 173 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

These early dismissals have added extra pressure on DC skipper and Shaw's opening partner David Warner who himself is under scrutiny for slow strike rate despite scoring 228 runs in five matches.

With no points in five matches so far, Delhi Capitals are looking ever so miserable this season with high chances of finishing last in the league.

IPL 2023: DC assistant coach Shane Watson defends Prithvi Shaw post abysmal run out vs RCB

Delhi Capitals regular captain Rishabh Pant visited his teammates at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ahead of his team’s away clash against RCB on Saturday.

Delhi Capitals regular captain Rishabh Pant visited his teammates at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru ahead of his team’s away clash against RCB on Saturday. Pant, who earlier had come to watch Delhi’s home game against Gujarat on April 4th, was seen walking with crutches. Not only this, but he also left a comment for Ricky Ponting’s son on social media. After suffering several injuries in a horrific road accident in late December last year, Rishabh Pant underwent surgery on his knee and got ruled out for an extensive period. In his absence, Delhi Capitals named veteran Aussie batter David Warner as the skipper for this season, while Axar Patel got picked as his deputy. In contrast to some individual brilliance, Delhi has failed to get going this season– having lost all four matches. Delhi Capitals' Rishabh Pant caught up with his teammates on the sidelines of the team's training session at the M. IPL 2023: 'I am recovering well,' says Rishabh Pant ahead of DC's tie vs RCB

Delhi Capitals captain David Warner is the second-highest run-scorer in IPL 2023, but on a contrasting note, his team has failed to register a single win so far. The team's assistant coach and Warner's former teammate, Shane Watson, has come to his aid, saying he'd be blown away if David doesn't set the tournament alight with his performance going ahead.

Speaking on the Grade Cricketer's podcast, Watson said even though Warner slammed his bat in frustration after completing his 43-ball fifty against Mumbai Indians the other night, he still played with a fearless approach.

"The other night, Dave [Warner] definitely had a [much] more fearless mindset with the way he was batting. He was taking the game on… yes, he missed a few balls that in the past he would have hit for four or six, he's mis-hit a couple of balls, but that's all part of Dave just working through the technical side of his game," Watson said.

Watson added that having played alongside Warner for years helps him understand what David's style of play is and what all areas are there that need improvement. The former IPL winner with Chennai Super Kings, Watson said, looking at how nicely Warner has played so far, he will set the tournament on fire.

"That's also part of my role as well, as a coach. Because I know Dave so well from batting with him and playing with him, there's one or two little things that I know he'll get right over the next couple of days, and I'll be blown away if he doesn't - yes, he's been scoring runs, but from a scoring perspective - if he doesn't set the IPL alight from now on, knowing that he's so close.

"He's batting very nicely. He's just mis-hitting some balls that he'd normally hit for four or six. Once you do that, once you start really finding the middle of your bat, then your scoring rate just goes through the roof," Watson added.

Watson elaborated on how David is fighting with different situations in the middle, playing through the innings even when wickets keep falling regularly.

"Warner had been working through" a 'challenging inner battle' in the first three games of the season, grappling with whether or not to take risks as wickets fell at the other end. It goes against a lot of the things that you're taught as a kid growing up," Watson said. "You lose a wicket, you've got to establish a partnership - even in T20 cricket - for five or six balls.

"But then, if you do that and you keep losing wickets after five or six balls before you know it, you're three overs down, and you've just been rotating ones to try and build a partnership. Dave was just working through that himself in the first few games," the former right-handed batter said.

Meanwhile, during the game against Rajasthan Royals, Warner completed 6000 IPL runs, and Watson feels David, over the past many years, has been a top performer in the league.

"His strike rate across his career in the IPL is nearly 140. He's been a great player in the IPL for a long period," Watson on Warner.

Delhi will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore on April 15th in an afternoon game.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma finally came back in form against Delhi Capitals as he scored a nonchalant 65 off 45 in his team's first win of the season.

With the fifty, Rohit also eclipsed Virat Kohli as the player with most runs against Delhi Capitals. After his 50, Rohit now has 977 runs against Delhi at an average of 32.56 in 33 matches. Rohit scored these runs at a strike rate of 131.14 along with the highest score of 74 not out.

Rohit's matches included both the teams he has played for in the IPL, i.e., Deccan Charges from 2008-11 and Mumbai Indians afterwards. RCB's Virat, on the other hand, has scored 925 runs in 26 matches against Delhi at an average of 51.38 and a strike rate of 134.05 with the highest score of 99.

Among other players who have taken a liking to Delhi are Ajinkya Rahane with 792 runs in 20 matches, Robin Uthappa with 740 runs in 28 matches and Suresh Raina with 661 runs in 26 matches.

Coming to the match, Rohit was aggressive since the start as MI chased a target of 173. He, along with opening partner Ishan Kishan, added 71 runs for the first wicket. Kishan also scored a handy 31 off 26. After Kishan got out, Rohit found a strong partner in Tilak Verma who was promoted up the order. The duo added 68 runs for the second wicket before Verma fell on a personal score of 41 off 29.

Rohit eventually got out in the 17th over of the chase at the team score of 143 but his innings had made sure that MI don't have much to sweat about.

Delhi, on the other hand, once again misfired as a batting unit. Apart from skipper David Warner, who scored 51 off 47 - his third fifty-plus score in four matches, no top-order batsman could hang around. Axax Patel, from the lower-middle order, scored a quickfire 54 of 25 to help Delhi reach a decent target of 172 in 19.4 overs.

For Mumbai, veteran spinner Piyush Chawla was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3/22 in his four overs and ratting DC's middle order. Speedster Jason Behrendorff also picked up 3/23 in his three overs.

IPL 2023: MI's Rohit Sharma breaks THIS Virat Kohli record with fifty against DC

Mumbai Indians and India's star batter Suryakumar Yadav had a horrible outing against Delhi Capitals as he got out on a duck and almost suffered a freak eye injury while fielding in the first innings.

The incident happened in the 17th over of DC's batting with Delhi all-rounder Axar Patel on charge. The batsman had already hit Mumbai bowler Jason Behrendorff for a six and pulled for one more on the next ball but directly to Surya.

It all seemed a wicket for MI as SKY is known as one of the safest fielders but lost the sight of the ball at the last moment and the ball landed directly near his eye.

MI's medic staff arrived quickly on the field to assist SKY and he eventually left the field. Have a look at the video here:

While batting, Surya came in at number four in the 16th over but lasted only one ball as he was scooped by Mukesh Kumar in a double-wicket over. This is the third time SKY got out cheaply in IPL 2023 in three games of MI so far. Prior to IPL, Surya scored three consecutive golden ducks in the three-match ODI series against Australia as well.

Coming to match, MI eventually got on the points table with their first win of the IPL 2023 as they beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets. Chasing a target of 173, MI were given a rollicking start by openers Rohit Sharma, who scored 65 off 45 and Ishan Kishan, who managed 31 off 26.

The duo added 71 runs for the first wicket in 7.3 overs. Tilak Verma was promoted at number three and scored a blistering 41 off 29, while adding 68 with Rohit for the second wicket. MI wobbled in the chase a bit with Rohit getting out shortly after Mukesh Kumar's double-wicket over, but Cam Green, 17 of 8, and Tim David, 13 off 11, took them home for their first win of the season.

Delhi, meanwhile, again failed as a batting unit with only David Warner firing at the top order, scoring 51 off 47 - his third fifty in four games. Axar Patel also smacked a whirlwind 54 off 25 as Delhi managed 172 in 19.4 overs.

IPL 2023: Suryakumar misses catch, ball hits his eye in MI vs DC - WATCH

Delhi Capitals vice-captain Axar Patel made it clear that skipper David Warner's strike rate is a concern among the camp as well and that he has not been the sheet anchor role.

“He has not been given the sheet anchor role. Ricky (Ponting, Head Coach), Dada (Sourav Ganguly, Director of Cricket), Pravin (Amre) sir, Watto (Shane Watson), everyone is having constant talks with Warner about his strike rate,” Axar told reporters after DC's fourth consecutive loss this season.

The deputy, however, feels for his skipper and said that, "He is trying really hard but he is just not able to hit it properly (not verbatim)."

Notably, David Warner is currently the second highest run scorer in IPL 2023 with 209 runs in four games at an average of 52.25 but at lowly strike rate of just 114.84. Warner has also scored three fifties in four games but all in a losing cause.

In Delhi's latest loss to Mumbai, nobody from the top-order could hang around as Warner crawled to his fifty. It was Axar Patel in the end to hit a quickfire 54 off 25 to take Delhi to a respectful total of 172.

However, once Axar got out, the DC collapsed like a House of Cards as it lost four wickets for meagre six runs. The southpaw although blames himself for that.

“I was also at fault. There were ten more balls left. I could have been more careful and added a few more runs to our total. It was the first ball and I thought if I connected it, the bowler will come under pressure,” said Axar.

Chasing 173, MI had a great start with their skipper Rohit Sharma managing his first fifty of the season. Mumbai, thanks for Rohit Sharma's 45-ball 65 and Tilak Verma's 29-ball 41, beat Delhi Capitals by six wickets to get their first points of the season.

IPL 2023: 'Everyone's talking to him,' says Axar Patel on DC skipper Warner's slow strike rate

Former Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) great Chris Gayle has fired a warning at Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper David Warner despite his 51-run knock against Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Warner was accused of slow batting by Gayle while also highlighting that he is putting pressure on him and the other batters due to his approach. Delhi failed to register their first win of the IPL 2023 after they lost on the last ball of the contest against Mumbai on Tuesday, April 11.

"In the first six overs, he showed a bit of intent and tried to be positive there. The wicket was very good to bat on in the powerplay. But he is putting a lot of pressure on himself and the other players as well. Players feel they have to come while he is not getting to ball away, they pretty much have to go from ball one and that is causing Delhi a lot of problems in the middle," Gayle told the digital broadcasters.

According to Gayle, Warner needs to go all guns blazing while attacking from the start. Warner scored a fifty on Tuesday but was not enough for his side as they lost on the final ball of the match.

"So that’s something he needs to work on. He is experienced enough to know what to do. He spoke about it in the previous game," he added.

While Warner has been far from his best, vice-captain for the season, Axar Patel came in defense of Warner and highlighted how he is working on his approach. It is understood that Warner’s depleting strike rate has been a major issue for the franchise while he fails to make an impact at the top.

"Even when he is trying, it's not coming off. Everyone spoke to him - Ricky, (Shane) Watson, Dada. The conversation about his strike rate also came up. They looked at his videos and he's working on it," Axar said.

After the latest defeat, DC remain the only team yet to win in the current season of the IPL from their four matches. They will next take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru with the intention of winning their first match of the season.

ALSO READ | 'You can't even play...': Ravi Shastri BLASTS CSK pacer, says he has become 'permanent NCA resident' While Warner has been far from his best, vice-captain for the season, Axar Patel came in defense of Warner and highlighted how he is working on his approach. IPL 2023: Chris Gayle fires warning at DC skipper Warner after MI defeat, concerned for slow batting approach

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition saw another close encounter when the Delhi Capitals (DC) hosted the Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi on Tuesday evening (April 11). Chasing 173, Rohit Sharma-led MI held their nerves to win match 16 on the final ball with six wickets to spare. During the game, the momentum shifted from one side to the other constantly and MI were left with two required off the last ball. While Anrich Nortje bowled a classy final over, MI batters -- Tim David and Cameron Green -- completed two runs to finish the run-chase in style.

Talking about the final delivery, Nortje bowled it at the stumps as David moved forward, connected and sprinted for two as the ball went to deep mid-off. Warner came to the ball in a flash and went for a flat throw but it wasn't quite accurate as David-Green ran two and ended the game in MI's favour. After his throw, the cameras moved towards DC's head coach Ricky Ponting and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly as the two legends were left unamused. Here's the video:

Earlier, MI opted to bowl first and rode on three-fers from Jason Behrendroff and Piyush Chawla to bundle out the DC line-up for 172 in 19.4 overs. At one stage, Delhi were 165 for 5 in 18 overs. Axar Patel (54 off 25 balls) and Warner (47-ball 51) were the only bright spots for DC. In reply, Rohit's 45-ball 65, Ishan Kishan's 26-ball 31, Tilak Verma's 29-ball 41, David (13* off 11 balls) and Green (8-ball 17 not out) led the charge for MI.

IPL 2023: Sourav Ganguly, Ponting unamused after Warner's last-ball throw in DC's loss vs MI - Watch

Former India opening batsman Virender Sehwag blasted Delhi Capitals skipper David Warner for playing slow during his fifty in a losing cause against Rajasthan Royals on April 8.

"David, if you are listening, please play well. Score 50 in 25 balls. Learn from Jaiswal, he did it in 25 balls. If you cannot do that, do not come and play in the IPL," said Sehwag while speaking to cricket website Cricbuzz after Delhi's third consecutive loss in IPL 2023.

Notably, Warner scored 65 off 55 balls as Delhi faltered in chase of 200. Apart from Warner, only Lalit Yadav (38 off 24) and Rilee Rossouw (14 off 12) could reach double figures as Capitals lost by 57 runs.

Explaining his comments, Sehwag said that a quickfire 30 from Warner would have been better instead of 55-60. He added that a fast innings from Warner could have given other players a chance to chase the target.

"It would have been better for the team if David Warner got out for 30 runs, rather than making 55-60. Players like Rovman Powell and Abishek Porel could have come out much earlier and maybe could have done something. No balls were left for those players, and they are big hitters in team," Sehwag said.

Warner, who holds the Orange Cap having scored 158 runs in three innings, has, however, scored at a nominal strike rate of 117. The Australian is known for his dashing batting style but hasn't been able to perform to the best of his prowess so far in this IPL.

Warner's opening partner Prithvi Shaw's string of low scores has also not helped the Australian to play freely. Shaw, notably, got out for a duck in the first over itself against Rajasthan - adding a third low score in as many innings to his name.

IPL 2023: 'Do not come and play in the IPL:' Virender Sehwag blasts DC's Warner for slow fifty against RR

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a huge role in his team win against struggling Delhi Capitals on April 8 as he hit five fours in the first over of the match itself.

Jaiswal started with pulling the first ball from Khaleel Ahmed for four before a misfield on a cut shot gave him the second boundary on the second ball. The southpaw completed the hat-trick with an exquisite drive on the off-side off the third ball. The fourth ball of the over was dot but Jaiswal hit two more fours on the last two balls to take 20 off the first over.

The over set the tone for RR as they scored 199/4 in their 20 overs, which proved too much for DC to chase down. Royals spinner, Ravi Ashwin, in a video shared by the IPL's twitter handle, interviewed Jaiswal about his innings after the match.

Ashwin, however, got cheeky and asked Jaiswal to spoke about the over which went for 444 runs. As soon as Jaiswal started speaking, Ashwin sheepishly asked again 444 runs? To which Jaiswal replied, "I don't know. I was seeing the ball clearly and I thought I should go for it."

Ashwin further asked, 'I see a lot of confidence in your batting, does it have something to do with your year with the red-ball?' Jaiswal responded positively to that, saying, "yes, I think 100 percent because I played a lot of red-ball cricket the whole year and I was able to control my emotions a lot."

IPL 2023: DC's David Warner creates HISTORY, joins Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan in EXCLUSIVE list

Rajasthan Royals bowler Trent Boult once again delivered a double-wicket maiden as he dismissed Delhi Capitals' Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey off successive balls. This is the second time in three matches that Boult has bowled a double-wicket maiden in IPL 2023.

Chasing a target of 200, DC subbed in Prithvi Shaw for Khaleel Ahmed as Impact Player but Shaw failed to score a single run and was caught by RR skipper Samson behind the wicket. The catch itself was a blinder and with the latest failure, Shaw is now under a lot of pressure to come good. Have a look at his wicket here:

Manish Pandey came to the crease to replace Shaw and lasted just one ball as Boult trapped him LBW. DC skipper Warner, however, cajoled Pandey into taking a review but to no use. The next batsman, Rilee Rossouw, was dismissed almost too as the ball just moved past his outside edge.

Rajasthan Royals bowler Trent Boult once again delivered a double-wicket maiden as he dismissed Delhi Capitals' Prithvi Shaw and Manish Pandey off successive balls.

Have a look at his wicket here: How about THAT for a start! 🤯 WHAT. A. DC skipper Warner, however, cajoled Pandey into taking a review but to no use. The next batsman, Rilee Rossouw, was dismissed almost too as the ball just moved past his outside edge. Also Watch: RR's Jaiswal rips apart DC's Khaleel, hits five fours in first over Rossouw played the last ball from Boult with much deserved respect as the bowler walked away after putting his team on top. Earlier, DC won the toss and put Rajasthan in to bat first. The decision from Warner proved to be wrong instantly as Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal ripped apart DC's Khaleel Ahmed for five fours in the first over itself. Jaiswal's opening partner Buttler too joined the party in the second over as he smashed Capitals' South African pacer Anrich Nortje for three fours in the over, taking Rajasthan to 32 in two overs with all runs coming in boundaries - eight to be precise. Both Jaiswal and Buttler scored a fifty each - 60 off 31 and 79 off 51, respectively. IPL 2023: RR's Samson takes SCREMAER to dismiss DC's Shaw as Boult bowls double-wicket maiden again - WATCH

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal started out in blasting fashion against Delhi Capitals on Saturday as he smacked Khaleel Ahmed for five fours in the first over of the match. Jaiswal started with pulling the first ball for four before a misfield on a cut shot gave him the second boundary on the second ball.

The southpaw completed the hat-trick with an exquisite drive on the off-side off the third ball. The fourth ball of the over was dot but Jaiswal hit two more fours on the last two balls to take 20 off the first over itself.

The first non-boundary run in the Royals' innings came on the third ball of the third over off Jaiswal's bat only, on Mukesh Kumar's ball who replaced Khaleel after the boundary-laden first over.

Delhi captain Warner, however, brought Khaleel back for the fourth over of the inning and the left-arm pacer corrected his lengths immediately and he gave away just 11 runs in his second over, conceding only one boundary. Royals, meanwhile, raced to 50 runs in just four overs after some belligerent batting.

Earlier, Capitals won the toss in Guwahati and chose to field. Rajasthan, however, proved the decision not impactful in the first over itself, leaving Delhi gasping for air on a hot and sunny Guwahati afternoon.

With one win and one loss in two matches, Royals currently sit at number five on points table while Delhi, after losing both their matches, are at number eight on the points table with no points to their name.

RR vs DC head-to-head: Who is expected to win Rajasthan Royals vs Delhi Capitals match today?

Rajasthan Royals will miss star batter Jos Buttler for their next match against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023, as per the latest reports. Against Punjab Kings on Wednesday night, RR's Jos Buttler, while grabbing Shahrukh Khan's catch, injured his finger, for which he had to get multiple stitches; and because of this only he didn’t open, and Ravi Ashwin was sent instead.

Speaking after yet another close contest between both these sides at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, RR captain Sanju Samson revealed that Buttler was unfit and received stitches after taking the catch.

“Jos was not fit. He was getting stitches for his finger after the catch,” said Samson after the match, which Rajasthan Royals lost by five runs.

Even during Rajasthan’s innings, Buttler came one down and struck a six and a boundary before he got out caught and bowled by Nathan Ellis on 19 off 11 balls.

Playing on their secondary home ground, Rajasthan won the toss and asked Punjab to bat first. New opening pair in Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shikhar Dhawan wreaked havoc, hitting 90 runs for the first-wicket stand. While wickets tumbled quickly after that, veteran Dhawan held one end and kept scoring at will. Meanwhile, he also completed his 50th fifty plus score in IPL, equalling Virat Kohli’s record.

Courtesy for a proper batting show, Punjab scored a mammoth 197 for four in 20 overs.

Royals, who were coming off a great win over SunRisers Hyderabad, didn’t start well and lost two wickets inside the first four overs. Buttler also departed inside the Powerplay, leaving Royals in hot waters. The middle-order also tried bailing the side out of trouble, but with controlled bowling, Punjab remained ahead in the game.

However, the game-changing moment came during the fag end when Dhruv Jurel and Shimron Hetmyer unleashed the attack to the opposition but eventually failed to cross the line as they lost the match by five runs.

IPL 2023: Big blow to Rajasthan Royals as Jos Buttler set to miss Delhi Capitals clash - Reports

The David Warner-led Delhi Capitals (DC) have not had a bright start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. On Tuesday (April 04), the Delhi franchise locked horns with the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT) and lost by six wickets in defence of 163 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi. Thus, this was DC's second defeat in a row. The current season is a litmus test for the 2020 runners-up as they are without their regular captain Rishabh Pant.

After suffering a horrific car accident, on December 30 2022, Pant has been out of cricketing action and is on the road to recovery. The swashbuckling left-hander will take a long time to recover and attain match fitness before he once again represents Team India and the DC camp. Ahead of DC's second game in IPL 2023, against GT, Director of Cricket Operations Sourav Ganguly, former India captain and BCCI chief, opined on Pant's absence and urged other star players to step up with him missing out.

'Rishabh Pant became better since MS Dhoni stopped playing'

“Obviously the team will miss Rishabh, but this is an opportunity for others to step up. We will miss him (Rishabh) for the season as players like (Jasprit) Bumrah, Rishabh and Shreyas are not replaceable in franchise tournaments and best are distributed to all teams. I see this as an opportunity for someone to become better because Rishabh became better since MS Dhoni stopped playing. That’s the way players are produced. You see (Shubman) Gill getting better, Rutu (Ruturaj Gaikwad) playing well, so it’s an opportunity. Rishabh will be missed but most important is his recovery,” Ganguly told reporters.

IPL 2023: Rishabh Pant gets grandstand welcome in DC's first home game; fans unveil special banner

Former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar took a cheeky dig at Delhi Capitals' captain David Warner at the post-match presentation ceremony. Delhi had played against Lucknow on Saturday and lost by 50 runs but Warner was confident that they'll be better in their next match at home in Delhi.

Sunil Gavaskar, however, made a sly remark after Warner said that he was in Delhi last in 2011. Notably, the Australian had played the second Test in Delhi during the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar trophy. Here's how the conversation went:

David Warner: We go back to Delhi in front of our home crowd. I know it's a batting wicket. The last time, I was there in Delhi back in 2011, it was low and slow. Now I saw a bit of green grass on that surface. There will be a bit of dew in the night. If we can get an all-round good wicket, it would be fantastic.

Sunil Gavaskar: David last time you were there in Delhi in 2011-12? You were there last month!

David Warner: Yeah, I know that. That was a different pitch, it was a red ball. Let's forget that.

Another presenter Simon Doull then chipped and called Gavaskar's remark cheeky as the trio burst out laughing.

Delhi Capitals (DC), meanwhile, had a horrid start to their campaign as they lost to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 50 runs both teams' season opener on April 1. Delhi were in command during their bowling for most times but some death-over flourish have LSG 193 to defend, which proved too much for Delhi in the end.

Delhi skipper Warner, however, had a decent day with the bat as he scored 48-ball 56, highest from his side. Chasing 194, Delhi could manage only 143/9 in their 20 overs. Apart from Warner Rilee Rossouw scored 30 runs. Capitals will next play against Titans on April 4.

IPL 2023: Sunil Gavaskar takes a CHEEKY dig at DC's David Warner after match against LSG

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting pointed out sloppy fielding and poor execution in bowling as reasons behind DC’s loss against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday night.

Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting pointed out sloppy fielding and poor execution in bowling as reasons behind DC’s loss against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Saturday night. Following dropping Lucknow's Kyle Mayers early on, the Windies batter punished them as he smashed a fifty on his IPL debut and propelled LSG to put up a massive total of 193 in the first innings. Delhi’s chase began poorly as they lost three wickets early, all to Mark Wood, and then after a steady partnership between captain David Warner and Rilee Rossouw, wickets further went tumbling down. As a result, DC fell short of the target by 50 runs. Speaking to the media after the match, Ponting didn’t mince his words and slammed his side’s poor outing across all departments in their IPL 2023 opener. IN PICS - OTD in 2011, MS Dhoni's team India lifted the World Cup after 28 years - RELIVE THOSE MOMENTS! “To be totally honest, I think they (LSG) got more runs than they probably should have. I don’t think we helped ourselves in the field. After the first four overs, our fielding was really sloppy; a couple of chances went down, and a few misfields. One of the chances that went down, Mayers ended up going on a bit of run after that, which put us behind the game a little bit,” Ponting said in the post-match press conference. Ponting said that given so much dew in the evening, DC should have made the most of this chance, but because they had leaked so many runs in the beginning, they were always playing the chasing game and faltered eventually. “We conceded 16 sixes in our bowling innings, and that goes to show, we were off with our execution. When you give away that many, it’s hard to drag yourself back into the game. I didn’t think it was a 190-plus wicket. There was a lot of dew there, if anything, the wicket was probably better for us batting second, so there are a few reasons why we lost the game,” Punter added. Ponting heaps praise on Mark Wood Mark Wood was impressive in his first game as a Lucknow player, picking up his maiden IPL five-for (5/14). Looking impressed with how he bowled, Ponting said he expected nothing less from Wood, and with the way he traumatised DC batters with the sheer pace early on, he deserves all the credit. “He was outstanding. He bowled the way we thought he would bowl. We knew he’d bowl fast and attack the stumps, and he used his bouncer really well. He is a world-class fast bowler. If he stays fit, you will see him bowling fast spells,” Ponting said. Delhi’s next match will be against Gujarat Titans on April 4th in Kotla.

IPL 2023: Poor execution, sloppy fielding cost us the match, laments Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting

Delhi’s special tribute to Pant

Injured in December, the severity of Pant‘s injuries have seen him miss out on both international and IPL cricket in 2023, but he still remains a fan favourite for the franchise.

“Always in our dugout. Always in our team,” read a message on Delhi Capitals’ Twitter handle as they unveiled a kit with No.17 at the back.

Pant recently shared pictures of his recovery and is doing well to return the field for India. While the World Test Championship (WTC) final comes too early for him, the ODI World Cup later in the year in India could see him feature in the team. Meanwhile, David Warner has taken charge of the franchise and has been given the responsibility to help the team win their first IPL title.

The one-time winners RR had a memorable run in IPL 2022. After the 2018 edition, the inaugural champions reached the playoffs after ending as the second-ranked side. Eventually, they reached the final where they lost by seven wickets to the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) and will now look to go a step ahead and claim the title this time around.

Last year, RR rode on Jos Buttler, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Devdutt Padikkal, Samson, Shimron Hetymer, Trent Boult to reach the finale. For the 2023 edition, they have seen some valuable additions in the form of Joe Root, Adam Zampa, Jason Holder, etc.

'They will be lifting IPL 2023 trophy': Michael Vaughan's MASSIVE PREDICTION ahead of season-opener

Bengal keeper-batter Abhishek Porel is set to replace injured Rishabh Pant at Delhi Capitals (DC). The India international is currently recovering from the injuries he suffered in a horrific road accident late last year that ruled him out for most of 2023.

An IPL source close to the information revealed that Delhi Capitals have zeroed in on the young 21-year-old Abhishek as Pant’s replacement; and that, under the supreme guidance of the coach Ricky Ponting and Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly, Abhishek can learn and grow in a better space.

"Delhi Capitals are likely to put forth Abhishek Porel's name as Rishabh's replacement for the current season. He is only 21, and under the guidance of Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly, could be groomed as a second option even after Rishabh comes back," an IPL source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

While Delhi is adding up local wicket-keeping options from their end, the in-form Mumbai batter, Sarfaraz Khan, is likely to take up the keeper’s role for the upcoming IPL 2023. England’s Phil Salt could also be one of the options behind the wickets in some matches.

"As of now, it looks like Sarfaraz will start against Lucknow Super Giants and if the experiment works, then he will continue," the source added.

Earlier, during their first camp in Kolkata, DC had called Porel, Karnataka’s Luvnith Sisodia and Saurashtra’s Sheldon Jackson for the trials. While Jackson is someone who has played in the IPL before, at 36, he wasn’t the best option to go ahead with. Whereas Luvnith and Abhishek impressed the DC management, Ganguly and Ponting appeared to go ahead with Porel.

Porel, in his short career so far, has scored six half-centuries in 16 first-class games, in addition to having 66 dismissals with the gloves to his name.

Meanwhile, Delhi will open its IPL 2023 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1st.
