The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will get underway in less than 10 days, with Delhi Capitals still seeking clearance on seamer Anrich Nortje, who has resumed bowling in competitive cricket for the first time since September last year. Though his return to action will boost the side's morale, the reality surrounding his workload still looms.

Nortje last played an international game on September 9, 2023, against Australia, bowling just five overs before pulling out with a lumber stress fracture, which kept him out of the 50-over World Cup, the Test series at home against India and the second edition of the SA20 since.

However, the pacer returned to action for the Warriors in a CSA T20 Challenge match against the Tuskers at St George's Park, wherein he conceded 12 runs without picking a wicket. Although he likes bowling with the new ball up front, Nortje bowled the second, sixth, ninth and 15th over in his comeback game.

Speaking with Cricbuzz, Warriors coach Robin Peterson said, "He came through well. His pace was up; he's as quick as I've seen him. He looks happy with his body. Now his target is playing back-to-back competitive games."

While Nortje missed a few games after that for personal reasons, he will return to play the home game against Boland on Sunday.

Nortje eyes comeback

Nortje is among those super-fast pacers who have clocked three of the ten quickest balls bowled in the history of IPL, with him searing over 150 Kmph regularly.

Having missed IPL 2019 and the World Cup later that year, Nortje knows what it means to remain on the sidelines for the most important tournaments.

However, Peterson backs Nortje to be mentally ready for the action-packed summer, including the T20 World Cup (in June in the Caribbean and the USA).

"There's always that element of getting confident in the machine again," Peterson said.

"But Anrich is incredibly professional. He's had injuries before, so he's got some sort of formula on how to recover and what to do. The more I watch him bowl, the more he seems fine. He looks fit and healthy. He looks happy."

What was his mental state? "He's rock solid," Peterson said. "He's got no issues. Anrich is a low-maintenance cricketer. He does his work and gets on with it,” the coach added.

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals head coach has opined on Rishabh Pant coming back to the side as captain and said he'll slot straight in the captaincy role if he's fit enough. Ponting made the comments on ICC Review podcast ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024 season which starts Mach 22. Notably, Delhi had a horrible 2023 season, finishing at ninth place in 10-team event with only five wins and nine losses in 14 games.

“We've obviously had worries and concerns that he might not have made it in time to be ready for the IPL this year. I mean, he was a huge loss for us last year and what he went through, we can't even begin to describe what he's been through the last 12 or 14 months,” added Ponting.

Delhi Capitals’ only defeat so far this season was their last-ball heartbreak against Mumbai Indians in the curtain-raiser contest. Since then, Meg Lanning’s side has won four matches in a row, including a dominant win against Mumbai in the return leg. In three previous meetings with UP Warriorz, Delhi have won all the matches and will be full of confidence heading into the match.

For Beth Mooney and Co, a defeat on Friday will see them lose ground in the playoff race with both Mumbai and Delhi already on eight points. A defeat for them coupled with a win for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in their next match could be a hard pill to swallow.

UP Warriorz will face a do-or-die prospect in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) contest on Friday (Mar 8) as they take on league leaders Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on International Women's Day. Having lost only one match so far in the WPL 2024, Delhi Capitals will come into the contest as favourites to win the match. UP, on the flip side, will play for the second time in 24 hours having lost to Mumbai Indians on Thursday evening at the same venue. DC-W vs UP-W, WPL 2024 Preview: UP Warriorz face do-or-die prospect against league leaders Delhi Capitals

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa has advised Rishabh Pant to not rush his comeback ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which gets underway on March 22. Pant has worked hard on regaining full fitness after a horrific car crash in Dec 2022. Since then, he has been away from action and will mark his return to competitive cricket during the forthcoming season. DC franchise has already announced that the swashbuckling left-hander will return as the captain but won't keep wickets during the first half at least.

'Pant shouldn’t rush the process'

Ahead of Pant's much-awaited return, Uthappa told in an interview with InsideSport, "Well as far as Rishabh Pant is concerned, it all depends on his fitness and how he recovers from what has been a tough year and a half for him. I think, we should send all those energies to him that he recovers and comes back to his best. It’s good to see He’s back in the nets, he’s hitting the ball well, doing centre wicketkeeping practice. He shouldn’t rush the process."

"It’s hard to stay out of the game for so long, especially when you are super competitive and you want to perform and win matches. But sometimes when you hurry the process you end up doing more damage and go back to the wait line which is more frustrating. I really hope he takes his time to comeback and when he does he comes out good," Uthappa added.

Table toppers Delhi Capitals got their revenge over defending champions Mumbai Indians in their return clash of the season, this time at home, as they beat MI by 29 runs to stay at the top of the points table in WPL 2024. For the hosts, youngster Jemimah Rodrigues finally came good with the bat in this edition, scoring a brilliant unbeaten 69 off 33 balls.

Captain Meg Lanning continued her superb touch as she completed another fifty to her name.

Hunting a huge total is always tricky, and Delhi ensured it remains this way in the game against their rivals Mumbai.

Harmanpreet did try to turn the momentum around, but an outside top edge resulted in her wicket on just six, further putting her team down in this chase. Meanwhile, West Indies batter Hayley Matthews launched a counterattack, and while she somewhat bailed her team out of a troublesome situation, she got out to Jess Jonassen in her first over.

"Wasn't the easiest of wickets, but was suitable for my type of batting. Learning from my past mistakes, was trying to go out there and be explosive. I went back after the Test match, and worked on a few things coming into the WPL. Using the crease, timing the ball well, that was the game plan. I was playing on the bowler's mind, and that helped me a lot today,” the young batter added.

Director of Cricket at Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League, Sourav Ganguly, has revealed when the National Cricket Academy will give the fitness clearance certificate to Rishabh Pant ahead of IPL 2024. As per Ganguly, the NCA in Bengaluru will clear Pant to participate in the IPL on March 5.

Pant, who was appointed DC’s captain after the franchise didn’t retain their previous skipper, Shreyas Iyer, met with a road accident on New Year's Eve in 2022, suffering several serious injuries. Although the locals saved him and succeeded in pulling him out of the burning car, Pant had to undergo several surgeries on his knees and other joints to stand tall.

Match 7 of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 edition will see the Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCBW) host the Delhi Capitals Women (DCW) at the iconic M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday (Feb 29). Both sides are coming into this contest on the back of comfortable wins, hence, the clash is expected to go down to the wire.

Talking about the RCBW, they have moved past their last season's horrors with two back-to-back wins to kickoff the second edition in style. While they clinched a thriller versus UPW, by two runs, Bengaluru-based team thrashed the Gujarat Giants (GG) by eight wickets in pursuit of 108 to remain unbeaten in the season. Meanwhile, the DC camp -- who ended as the runners-up last season -- lost a thriller to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the season-opener but thrashed UP Warriorz (UPW) by nine wickets in their next outing, chasing 130.

Former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar opined on Rishabh Pant's much-awaited comeback during the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, which kicks off on March 22. Pant will return to competitive cricket after his horrific car crash in December 2022. Gavaskar feels Pant should only be reinstated as the Delhi Capitals (DC) captain if he is fully fit.

'Let's not rush him into doing something that there will be a setback'

Delhi Capitals (DC) Women pacer Arundhati Reddy has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee for breaching the Women's Premier League (WPL) code of conduct in the match against UP Warriorz on Monday (Feb 26). Reddy returned with figures of 1/6 in three overs during DC's thumping nine-wicket win but admitted to a Level 1 offence under article 2.5 of the league's code.

The code breached by the 26-year-old pertains to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon her dismissal during a match.”

Reddy had also bowled well in DC's season opener against Mumbai Indians Women but the team lost the game eventually. In their second match, however, everyone, including her, was on the top of their game.

WPL 2024: DC pacer Arundhati Reddy fined for breaching code of conduct vs UP Warriorz

Australia veteran David Warner is ruled out of the final T20I against New Zealand with an adductor injury, marking an end to his bilateral international career. However, the attacking batter could attain full fitness in time for the Indian Premier League season 17, beginning March 22, CA said in a statement.

"Warner will require a brief recovery period, which is not expected to affect his availability for the upcoming Indian Premier League leading into the ICC Men's T20 World Cup," a CA statement said.

Warner missed the second game at Eden Park in Auckland on February 23, with Steve Smith opening alongside Travis Head. That call was always on the card, given Cricket Australia’s policy of rotating players throughout the series. Warner’s recovery time is anticipated to be around seven to ten days.

Having announced his retirement from Tests and ODIs earlier this year, Warner informed everyone about his decision to step aside from the T20Is following the World Cup later in June in the Caribbean and the USA. With Warner remaining unavailable for selection, his final outing in men’s bilateral cricket was the first game in Wellington, wherein he scored 32 off 20 balls before being booed off the ground upon his dismissal.

Warner’s absence from the playing XI would give an extended run to Steve Smith at the top, although his chances of sealing the spot in the T20 WC squad look gloomy, with Warner, Travis Head and Captain Mitchell Marsh to lock the first three positions.

David Warner to miss final T20I against New Zealand, likely to be fit for IPL 2024

Rishabh Pant will lead the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 edition, confirmed co-owner of the franchise Parth Jindal. Pant is gearing up for his much-awaited return to competitive cricket since his fatal car accident in Dec 2022. Jindal, however, revealed that Pant will play solely as a batter in the first half of the tournament.

"Rishabh is batting. He's running. He has started his wicketkeeping. He is likely to be fully fit for the IPL. I am expecting Rishabh to play IPL and he will lead from match one. First seven games, we are going to play him only as a batter and depending on how his body reacts, we will take a call for the rest of the IPL," Jindal said while speaking to ESPN Cricinfo.

Pant has been posting videos of his preparations for IPL 2024. He has missed a considerable amount of cricket following his horrific car crash. With him returning for DC, it will bolster their squad as the team struggled in IPL 2023 and ended at the ninth spot under David Warner. While the Delhi camp is happy to reappoint Pant as the captain, they are believed to be taking it slow with the Indian star batter as he won't be donning the gloves at least in the first half of the mega event.

Jindal also opined on pacer Anrich Nortje, who has missed a lot of cricket in recent times due to injury concerns. On the South African pacer, who missed the 2023 ODI World Cup, SA20 and the entire multi-format series versus India at home, Jindal stated, "He's fit. Right now, he is bowing at 80 per cent intensity. Next week, he will bowl at 100 per cent. He's going to make his comeback in the IPL. He is going to join our camp and should be good to go for our first game."

On Thursday (Feb 22), the partial schedule of IPL 2024 was released which covers fixtures for the first two weeks. Delhi will not play their first two home games at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the national capital as the ground will not be ready to host the matches soon after WPL 2024. WPL 2024: Want to keep it simple - Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning clears intention ahead of curtain-raiser

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Delhi Capitals (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting has said that Rishabh Pant is going to play the upcoming 2024 season. Ponting, however, was not sure if the southpaw would be keeping the wickets or captaining the side. WPL 2024: Full schedule out! Defending champions Mumbai Indians to take on Delhi Capitals in opener on Feb 23

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is already one of the most followed, popular and revenue-generating sporting leagues worldwide. With its foothold in the Indian and Southeast Asian region, IPL is now going towards Europe, with its franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) showing keen interest in buying stakes in English County side Hampshire, per the latest reports.

The Telegraph reported that the GMR group - the co-owners of the Delhi Capitals, is in talks with Hampshire chairman Rod Bransgrove, who holds the majority share in the club, over buying shares and selling the club.

"Hampshire County Cricket Club's majority shareholder is in advanced talks to sell his stake to the part-owners of Indian Premier League team Delhi Capitals," The Telegraph report said.

The report also said that if this deal is agreed on, it will make Hampshire the first English County side owned by an overseas franchise. Outside of the usual thought-of benefits, an IPL franchise trying to put a foothold in the English game is the biggest plus of this deal.

'Lucky to be alive': Rishabh Pant recalls horrific car crash before joining DC table at IPL auction

Rishabh Pant is all set to make his dear comeback to the cricket field during next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), his franchise Delhi Capitals has confirmed. The left-handed batter has been out of cricket since suffering a fatal road accident on New Year’s Eve last year. Currently undergoing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Pant will return to lead DC in IPL 2024.

As per the DC management, Pant is likely to regain full fitness by February-end next year, and even then, his participation in IPL 2024 will be subject to clearance from the NCA doctors. Having undergone knee surgery earlier and dealing with back and ankle-related issues all this while, chances of him being able to keep wickets are still under the dark cloud.

The source close to the information revealed Pant will only keep wickets if the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) permits it; otherwise, the 26-year-old will continue playing as a fielder and a batter.

"If he is not keeping, he will definitely be on the field and will lead the side," a franchise official stated.

Considering the scenario where Pant doesn’t get the clearance from the BCCI to keep wickets during the IPL, he can be used as an ‘Impact Player’.

Pant’s absence a loss for cricket

Emerging as the most-feared batter in Tests, Pant’s absence from cricket held back DC and Team India’s chances of doing well in top events this year.

While Delhi fared poorly without Pant, finishing ninth on the points table, with them facing wicketkeeping troubles, India missed Pant mainly during the World Test Championship Final against Australia, which they lost by an embarrassing margin.

After missing the whole year, including IPL 2023, the Asia Cup and the home World Cup, Pant will also be away during India’s tour of South Africa 2023/24, their home series against Afghanistan and England early next year.

Although KL Rahul kept wickets during the Asia Cup and the home World Cup, faring decently, Ishan Kishan and KS Bharat shared keeping duties in red-ball cricket.

With Rahul and Kishan both picked in the squad for the two Tests against South Africa, reports suggest Ishan could keep wickets, while Rahul might play as a pure batter.

Australia's Phoebe Litchfield was the first player to come up for bidding at a base price of INR 30 lakh, she earned a first bid from Gujarat Giants. After a bit of a tussle between UP Warriorz and Gujarat, the auction price zoomed past the 60-lakh mark in no time. Gujarat Giants eventually got her for Rs 1 crore.

IPL 2024 Auction: Full list of players retained and released by Delhi Capitals

Rishabh Pant is still recovering months after being in a horrific car accident on December 30, 2022. As per the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) recent release, the 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has started batting and keeping wickets in the nets in the National Cricket Academy (NCA). While he may be recovering at a rapid pace, he is likely to miss the forthcoming ODI World Cup at home, as the board will be eager to not rush his return. As per Ishant Sharma, India's veteran pacer, Pant may also miss next year's Indian Premier League (IPL).

Ishant, who is part of the commentary panel for the India-West Indies Tests, feels Pant might not play next year's IPL as well. In his absence, his franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) was led by David Warner this year and the one-time runners-up failed to reach the playoffs. They finished at the ninth spot with five wins from 14 encounters.

'Not easy for a wicketkeeper and batter'

"I feel we might not see Rishabh Pant in the next IPL as well because it is not a small injury. It was a very serious accident. He has just started batting and wicketkeeping and to run and turn after that, there are a lot of things, which is not easy for a wicketkeeper and a batter," Ishant told Jio Cinema.

Ishant, who has represented India in 105 Tests, added, "The good thing is that he didn't have a second surgery. If he had undergone a second surgery, he would have been out for even longer. He has had one surgery now but I don't think he will be fit for the World Cup for sure. Hopefully, if he gets fit for the IPL, it will be great."

Apart from Pant, India have several injury concerns at the moment. The likes of Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Prasidh Krishna are also in recovery mode from their respective injuries ahead of the Asia Cup 2023 and ODI World Cup at home, to be held in October-November this year.

Pant's ardent fans will hope for his quick return but the Indian team will like to take it slowly with him, post his horrific car crash. The star player remains India's preferred keeper-batter across formats and his return is keenly awaited. Talking about his IPL franchise, the DC unit will hope for him to return in IPL 2024 as his absence was severely felt by them in this year's edition.

'Might not see Rishabh Pant in IPL 2024' - India pacer on star player recovering after horrific car crash

Things have taken a down urn for India’s former U-19 World Cup-winning captain Prithvi Shaw as he struggles for playing time with the national side. Considered the next big thing in 2018, Shaw hit the ground running with the national side, having helped India win the junior World Cup. However, the last 12 months have been turbulent for the Mumbai-based cricketer as he gets consistently snubbed by the selectors.

Shaw wants to move forward

Shaw, 23, has a lot of cricket still left in front of him but a poor Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign coupled with off-field issues have seen his stock decrease with the national team pecking order. So much so that, despite scoring 379 in the Ranji Trophy, he finds himself behind Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad in the national team.

"Those few innings [at the start of IPL 2023] went in a flash," Shaw said while in conversation with Espncricinfo.

"[While] I kept thinking about the first match, I quickly realised three matches had passed. The learning was once the match is done, just leave it there. You can't do anything about it, it's history. You have to keep moving forward.”

The left-handed sensation seemed like a potential future captain at his Indian Premier League side Delhi Capitals, but a poor run of form forced him to sit out of the team while his off-field issues also had a negative impact. Shaw was not considered for the West Indies tour and was part of the Duleep Trophy squad of West Zone. While things did not go any better, he will now have the opportunity to impress the selectors as West Zone made it to the final against South Zone.

Shaw in Duleep Trophy

Shaw scored 26 and 25 in two innings of the semifinal bout against Central Zone and looked far from his best. However, he has put the poor run of form behind him and looks forward to regaining his spot in the national team. He last represented India in July 2021, when Shikhar Dhawan-led India faced Sri Lanka. He was since drafted in the India squad for the New Zealand T20I series, but did not get any playing time.

Duleep Trophy: Prithvi Shaw reflects on poor run after fruitful campaign, 'you have to keep moving forward'

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been out of competitive cricket after being injured in a car crash in December last year. The accident took place near Pant's home town - Roorkee, Uttarakhand. Pant suffered two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and several other injuries. He is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy (NCA). The southpaw has now shared an update on his fitness. In a video dropped by Pant on Instagram, the 25-year-old can be seen climbing the stairs without the support of a stick.

“Not bad yaar Rishabh. Simple things can be difficult sometimes,” the India cricketer wrote on Instagram. In a video shared on his Instagram Stories, Pant can be seen doing some stretching. The post soon spread like wildfire as social media users wished Pant a speedy recovery.
