Millions of Indian fans heaved a sigh of relief as the Men-in-Blue finally got over the final hurdle to win an ICC trophy on Saturday (Jun 29). However, none was as relieved as captain Rohit Sharma, who was carrying the demons of the painful twin losses suffered against Australia in the World Test Championshipand 50-over World Cup final last year.
After guiding India to the promised land in the T20 World Cup final against South Africa, Rohitquietly returned to the Kensington Ovalpitchamid the celebrations, kneeled down and picked uplittle bit of grass and soil. The Indian captain then proceeded to chew the grass what must have tasted like success.
"Very hard to sum up what we have been through for the last 3-4 years. To be honest, we worked very hard as individuals and as a team a team, lot has gone on behind the scenes for us to be here today and win this game," said Rohit in the post-match presentation ceremony.
"It is not what we did today, it is what we have been doing for the last 3-4 years. That's the the result that has come for us today," he added.
The tradition of eating grass on the pitch where one has emerged victorious was started by tennis great Novak Djokovic when he defeated Rafael Nadal at the Wimbledon in 2011.
"I didn't know what to do from the emotions that I had at that moment. It was an incredible feeling so the tasting of the grass came spontaneously. It tasted really good!" said Djokovic back then when quizzed about the unique celebration.
“It’s a little tradition obviously. As a kid I was dreaming of winning Wimbledon, so, like every child, you dream of doing something crazy when you actually achieve it - if you achieve it - and that was one of the things," he added.
Since 2011, it has become part of his post-match celebration routine at Wimbledon where he has been victorious in2014, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022.
