World No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic have pulled out of next month’s ATP Montreal Masters, Tennis Canada confirmed on Friday. Both players had long runs at Wimbledon earlier this month. Sinner won the men’s singles title, while Djokovic reached the semi-finals. “After carefully considering all the factors together with my team, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw from Montreal,” Sinner said in a statement. “It is never easy to miss such an important event, but we believe this is the right decision to prioritise my health.” The ATP Masters 1000 event will be held from Aug 1 to 13 and is one of the final major tournaments before the US Open. This year, the men’s competition will take place in Montreal, while the women’s WTA 1000 event will be hosted in Toronto. Tournament organisers said they were disappointed by the late withdrawals, especially since both Sinner and Djokovic also skipped last year’s tournament in Toronto. “We respect their decisions and understand that, with such a demanding schedule, players’ health must remain the priority,” tournament director Valerie Tetreault said. “That said, we believe the frequency of these last-minute withdrawals in the last few years raises a broader issue for our sport.” “Masters 1000 events are among the flagship tournaments on the tour, and fans rightfully expect to see the world’s best compete.” Also Read - 'Jhandu Kumar has made the entire nation proud': PM Modi hails India's first CWG 2026 medallist Tetreault said Tennis Canada is in talks with the ATP about possible changes to the calendar to protect the importance of Masters 1000 events while also managing players’ workload. Following the withdrawals, reigning French Open champion and Wimbledon finalist Alexander Zverev is expected to be the top seed. Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime will be the second seed. World number one Sinner moved one step closer to defending his Wimbledon crown by defeating seven-time champion Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The convincing victory ended Djokovic's pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title. Sinner will now face Alexander Zverev in Sunday's championship match after the German cruised past Britain's Arthur Fery 7-6 (7/0), 6-2, 6-4. Centre Court spectators had hoped to witness another memorable performance from Djokovic and a dream run from Fery, but both Sinner and Zverev produced clinical displays built on powerful groundstrokes and dominant serving. The Italian will compete in his second consecutive Wimbledon final as he seeks a fifth Grand Slam title, while Zverev has reached his first Wimbledon final and is chasing his second major championship. Sinner enters the title clash with significant momentum, having won his last nine meetings against Zverev, including four victories this season. The reigning champion also carries a 13-match winning streak at Wimbledon, while Zverev arrives on a 13-match unbeaten run in Grand Slam competition. A victory on Sunday would also give Sinner his 100th career Grand Slam match win, repeating his triumph over Zverev in the 2025 Australian Open final. "It means a lot to me to play one more final here. It's the most special tournament we have," said Sinner, who exited in the second round of the recent French Open. Also Read: IND-W vs ENG-W One-off Test, Day 1: Mandhana shines as India reach 285; England 21/1 at stumps
‘I would like to, at least one more time’, says Djokovic
At 24, Sinner will contest his seventh Grand Slam final and his first since finishing runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at last year's US Open. So hopefully the thriving part is coming," Djokovic said. The extreme conditions pushed several athletes to their physical limits, but the most alarming moment came when Czech youngster Jakub Mensik collapsed on court moments after winning a marathon five-set thriller against Mariano Navone. The 20-year-old battled for more than four hours under the sun before cramping severely and was offered on wheelchair after match point. Players, including legednary Novak Djokovic, and coaches are now questioning the tournament schedule, with growing concerns over player safety as the Roland Garros heatwave continues to impact matches across both draws.
How heat is impacting players at French Open 2026?
Mensik did not hold back while describing the conditions after the match, calling the weather "insane" following his collapse on Court 6. He admitted his body completely shut down after the exhausting contest, saying he had "full-body cramps" by the end of the fifth set. "To be there for more than four and a half hours, that’s just insane, and even with the breaks you don’t have that much time, the ballboy cannot bring you a towel during the changeover. You have just one minute, which obviously before, when you sit, it’s already just 30 seconds. So there is not that much time to cool yourself down," he said. Also Read - French Open 2026 | Coco Gauff reveals having 'mini car accident' before Round 1The youngster eventually defeated Navone 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(11), but dropped to the clay after converting match point. Medical staff rushed onto the court with ice packs while officials shaded him with umbrellas as he struggled to recover. Despite concerns, Mensik later refused wheelchair assistance and walked off the court on his own after treatment.Novak Djokovic also echoed similar concerns about the harsh conditions at Roland Garros. After advancing to the third round with a four-set victory over Valentin Royer, Djokovic admitted the heat made the contest "very tough physically." The Serbian suggested matches should begin later in the evening to avoid exposing players to dangerous daytime temperatures. "Is that ideal to go over midnight? Yeah, it’s not," he said. "But if you have certain days that you have extreme heat and conditions, then maybe that’s something to consider."
What next for Mensik?
Despite the physical toll, Mensik confirmed he expects to continue his French Open campaign and is now preparing for a difficult third-round clash against Australian star Alex de Minaur. The Czech youngster remains one of the breakout names of the season after his rapid rise over the past year, including his stunning Miami Open title run earlier this season. However, his recovery will now become the biggest concern heading into the next round after spending nearly five hours battling cramps and exhaustion on the Paris clay.

Novak Djokovic, looking for his elusive 25th grand slam to become the most decorated tennis player ever, is not sure about his health and fitness for the French Open 2026. It is what it is."
Should Djokovic retire?
The Serb is arguably the best player ever to set foot on a tennis court and record 24 grand slam titles - the most by any male player - are a testimony to his greatness. In 2023, Djokovic won Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open as well but has been horribly out of form since then. The age hasn't made his life easier either with the Serb facing multiple injuries and giving walkovers in the grand slams in the last two years. Should he retire - it is a question for him to answer and the general consensus is that he might call it a day after winning the 25th grand slam title and etching his name forever as the most successful tennis player ever.

Kind of a new reality that I have to deal with. It is frustrating. At the same time it’s my decision to still perform in that kind of state and conditions. It is what it is." Should Djokovic retire? The Serb is arguably the best player ever to set foot on a tennis court and record 24 grand slam titles - the most by any male player - are a testimony to his greatness. In 2023, Djokovic won Australian Open, French Open, and the US Open as well but has been horribly out of form since then. The age hasn't made his life easier either with the Serb facing multiple injuries and giving walkovers in the grand slams in the last two years. Should he retire - it is a question for him to answer and the general consensus is that he might call it a day after winning the 25th grand slam title and etching his name forever as the most successful tennis player ever.

Djokovic said he wasn't sure about his fitness ahead of the French Open 2026 after exiting Italian Open in second round post 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 loss against Croatian qualifier Dino Prizmic.

French Open 2026, one of the four tennis majors which start later this month in May, has landed in hot soup over prize money. The Roland Garros organizers announced 9.5 per cent increase in prize money last month in comparison to 2025 editions but the players remain unhappy. A group of top 20 male and female players, subsequently, has issued a statement criticising the low increment in the prize money share and have expressed the disappointment. The group includes Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, Aryan Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff to name a few.
