Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic edged closer to a semi-final showdown at the US Open on Friday as Aryna Sabalenka avenged the memory of a bitter defeat to power into the last 16. Spanish second seed Alcaraz and Serbian legend Djokovic both booked their passage into the last 16 with comfortable victories and now stand just two wins away from meeting in the last four. Alcaraz breezed past Italian 32nd seed Luciano Darderi in emphatic fashion, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-0 on the Arthur Ashe Stadium while Djokovic, who is chasing a record 25th Grand Slam singles title, took care of Britain's Cam Norrie 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 6-3. Alcaraz's one hour 44-minute victory sends the 2022 US Open champion into a meeting on Sunday against France's Arthur Rinderknech, who defeated compatriot Benjamin Bonzi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. The five-time Grand Slam singles champion admitted he had been nervous about having to open the day's play at 11.30am local time. "I'm not an early morning person so it's difficult for me to wake up in the morning," Alcaraz said. “One of the good things today though I woke up early, did the warm up and felt good.” Alcaraz needed a medical timeout while leading 5-4 in the second set for treatment on his right knee, but later said he had no injury concerns.
Djokovic milestone
Djokovic, 38, meanwhile was clinical in his win over Norrie in the evening session, which sends him into a fourth round tie against German veteran Jan-Lennard Struff. "Coming into any match you really want to win in straight sets without any drama but obviously that's not possible," said Djokovic after becoming the oldest man to reach the US Open last 16 since Jimmy Connors in 1991. "It's good that I get tested," he added. “I'm still trying to find my rhythm and my groove on the court.” Djokovic's fourth round opponent Struff dealt a blow to American hopes of a first home US Open champion since 2003 with a 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) defeat of popular 17th seed Frances Tiafoe. "I don't know how to recover from this, to be honest with you," Tiafoe said. Shelton, 22, was leading 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 when he began to feel pain in his left shoulder. He played on but threw in the towel after Mannarino took the fourth set. Sabalenka was left distraught after being upset by the unheralded Fernandez four years ago with a place in what would have been her first Grand Slam final there for the taking. But the 27-year-old from Belarus made sure there was no repeat on Friday, seeing off Fernandez 6-3, 7-6 (7/2). Sabalenka's victory saw her extend her incredible winning streak in tie-breaks to 18. "I wanted this revenge badly," Sabalenka said afterwards. "It was a tough lesson for me back then. Since then, we never played again. "I just wanted to prove to myself that the lesson was learned and that I developed as a player and I could get this win."Sabalenka faces unseeded Spaniard Cristina Bucsa in the next round. For 20-year-old Payas Jain, one of India’s brightest table tennis talents, the story began in Delhi when he was just six years old. Both his parents (Shweta Jain and Jinendra Jain) were national-level players, and their passion for the game rubbed off on him. At first, he picked up the paddle simply to have fun, shuttling between school and tournaments. But everything changed after he lost a match to a girl. “That loss hurt my ego,” he recalled in an exclusive conversation with WION. “I started playing table tennis just to beat her. Slowly, my interest got better and better, and the rest is history.” What began as a child’s determination soon transformed into a professional ambition. With unwavering support from his parents and coach (Aman Balgu), Payas had access to trainers, physios, and mental coaches early in his journey — a privilege he doesn’t take for granted. Looking back, he calls his career “a nine out of ten,” not because it has been easy, but because he has always embraced the challenge of evolving his game. “Every year, I need to improve, to change my tactics, my strategy, my physical work. It’s difficult, but it’s also what I love about this sport.”
Table Tennis is like playing football and chess at the same time
Ask Payas about training, and his response is striking. “Table tennis is the fastest sport in the world. You get just 0.002 seconds. It’s like football and chess at the same time — you have to be fast, but also think.” His regimen isn’t just about reflexes or stamina. It’s as much mental as it is physical. Between points, he focuses on breathing, analysing opponents, and adjusting strategies in those precious ten seconds before play resumes. “You cannot make decisions while playing. Everything has to be done before. That’s why I train my mind as much as my body.” On India’s progress in table tennis, Payas believes the country is catching up with traditional powerhouses like China, Korea, and Japan, though the gap in systemic support remains. “They’ve had a structured system for 30-40 years. We’ve had one for about five years. But now things are moving fast. If we build a centralised training structure with consistent support, India can rise quickly.” For now, Payas’s eyes are set firmly on milestones — breaking into the world’s top 70, representing India at the 2026 Asian Games, and winning the national championship. But the ultimate dream remains clear: “I want to win an Olympic medal for India. I believe I can do it if I work hard.”

Those semi-final victories helped Sinner build a 5-4 edge in his nine encounters with Djokovic, who has lost the last four meetings. Sinner shrugged off fears over an elbow injury to brush aside American 10th seed Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals, while Djokovic hopes to be fully fit after an awkward fall late in his last-eight victory over Italy's Flavio Cobolli. Beaten by Carlos Alcaraz in the last two Wimbledon finals, Djokovic hasn't won a Grand Slam since moving level with Margaret Court on 24 major titles by clinching the 2023 US Open. Sinner and Alcaraz are the dominant forces in men's tennis now, but sixth seed Djokovic will be contesting a record 14th Wimbledon men's semi-final, with 10 wins from his previous 13 matches at that stage. Djokovic has made every Wimbledon final since 2018, and his last semi-final loss at the tournament came against Roger Federer in 2012. He has a 37-14 record in Grand Slam semi-finals, but has lost three of his last four. Djokovic can equal Federer's Open era record for most consecutive Wimbledon men's finals if he makes it to the last Sunday for a seventh time in a row. In his seventh Grand Slam semi-final, a victory for Australian Open champion Sinner would send him through to his first Wimbledon final. The 23-year-old, a three-time major winner, can become the sixth man in the Open era to make four consecutive Grand Slam final appearances. The last of those finals ended in a five-set defeat that saw him blow three championship points against Alcaraz in the French Open in June, a painful memory fuelling his Wimbledon title charge. Carlos Alcaraz v Taylor Fritz Back to his best after a spluttering start to the tournament, Carlos Alcaraz must subdue the power game of big-serving Taylor Fritz to reach his third successive Wimbledon final. Alcaraz was taken to five sets by the since-retired Fabio Fognini in the first round and also dropped a set against both Jan-Lennard Struff and Andrey Rublev to raise concerns about his title defence. Alcaraz, a five-time Grand Slam champion, eased fears about a dip in form with a dynamic demolition of Britain's Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals. The Spanish world number two is contesting his eighth Grand Slam semi-final, with a 5-2 record including victories in both his Wimbledon last-four ties. He is on a career-best 23-match winning streak since losing to Holger Rune in the Barcelona final in April and has won 34 of his 37 matches on grass. If Fritz can pull off a major upset, he will reach his second Grand Slam final, in the process becoming the first American man to make the Wimbledon final since Andy Roddick in 2009. The 27-year-old made his first appearance in a Grand Slam final at the US Open last year, losing to Jannik Sinner. Novak Djokovic takes on British wildcard Dan Evans in the next stage of his quest for a record 25th Grand Slam as defending women's champion Barbora Krejcikova seeks to prolong her love affair with Wimbledon. After three days of stunning upsets at the All England Club, Djokovic, Krejcikova and world number one Jannik Sinner will bid to avoid becoming the latest stars to crash out in second-round action on Thursday. Eight top 10 seeds in the men's and women's singles were beaten in the first round, which ranks as the most at a Grand Slam in the Open era. Italy's Jasmine Paolini, last year's Wimbledon runner-up, was defeated in the second round on Wednesday to leave only one of the top five women's seeds -- world number one Aryna Sabalenka -- still standing. Djokovic goes into his match against Evans with a losing record against the British wildcard, although they have met only once before. Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, was beaten by Evans on the clay of Monte Carlo in 2021. The Serb, beaten in the last two Wimbledon finals, struggled with stomach issues in his four-set win in the first round against Frenchman Alexandre Muller before recovering strongly, praising "miracle pills". Realistically, he is unlikely to lose sleep over the match-up with the 154th-ranked Briton, who, at 35, is three years younger than him, but he is wary of his opponent's experience on grass and the home support. "It's a good test for both of us," said Djokovic. "I think he's been picking his form up, as well. I think his rankings are not doing him justice at the moment. He deserves to be ranked higher. "He's one of the guys that you don't want to face on grass." Evans, for his part, knows he has to have the right mindset against the sixth seed. "He's done pretty much everything in the game," he said. “But it's also my chance to win the match. I have to be competitive.” ALSO READ | Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota killed in car accident Temple of tennis Krejcikova looked in deep trouble in her opening match before cutting out the errors and finding another gear to see off Alexandra Eala of the Philippines in three sets. The Czech 17th seed next takes on US player Caroline Dolehide, whom she has faced just once, beating her on clay in the United States in 2019. Krejcikova has had a miserable time with injuries this year and arrived at Wimbledon with just six matches under her belt in 2025. But the two-time Grand Slam champion is relishing being back on the hallowed turf of the All England Club, describing walking onto Centre Court for her first-round match as a "very beautiful and just very joyful experience". Wimbledon 2025 - the 138th edition of the Championship - is already underway and the All England Club has found the perfect way to describe Novak Djokovic's hunt for the record 25th title. Though he has avoided an early clash with Carlos Alcaraz, Djokovic still finds himself in the same half as Sinner. That means if both survive their tough draws, fans will be treated to a nail-biting semi-final, a rematch of their recent Roland Garros battle. Meanwhile, defending champion Alcaraz and third seed Alexander Zverev are in the bottom half of the draw. If Sinner or Djokovic reach the final, they could face one of these two stars for the Wimbledon crown.

Jannik Sinner, who recently beat Djokovic at the French Open 2025 semifinals, is eyeing his first Wimbledon title, while Djokovic is chasing history to match Roger Federer’s record of eight singles titles at the All England Club.

Wimbledon 2025 could witness a blockbuster semi-final as current world no. 1 Jannik Sinner is drawn in the same half as seven-time grass champion Novak Djokovic. The Italian star, who recently beat Djokovic at the French Open 2025 semifinals, is eyeing his first Wimbledon title, while Djokovic is chasing history to match Roger Federer’s record of eight singles titles at the All England Club. The draw, held on Friday (Jun 27), has set the stage for a potential thrilling semi-final. Jannik Sinner will kick off his Wimbledon campaign against fellow Italian Luca Nardi. If he progresses smoothly, a potential quarter-final clash awaits with another fellow Italian and last year’s Wimbledon semi-finalist, Lorenzo Musetti. Between Nardi and Musetti, Sinner may also face tricky grass-court servers like Taylor Fritz, Matteo Berrettini, Hubert Hurkacz or Alexander Bublik, all known for their powerful serves and ability to cause upsets on grass. But it’s not a walk in the park for Serb as a tricky third-round match against rising American star Alex Michelsen could await, followed by a potential fourth-round clash with Australian Alex de Minaur, who is seeded 11th. In the quarters, Britain’s No. 1 Jack Draper, Alexander Bublik or young Czech Jakub Mensik could stand between Djokovic and the semis.

He recently lifted his second French Open title in an unforgettable five-set thriller against his biggest rival and world No. 1, Jannik Sinner. Barely a week later, he switched surfaces from clay to grass and conquered the Queen’s Club Championships, highlighting the class of Alcaraz to switch surfaces and adapt faster.
