Seeded No.31, Krejčíková started on the front foot and dominated her Italian counterpart in the opening set. Breaking Paolini twice, the Czech star was at her fluent best as she played on a high line and relied on the first serves. The Italian hardly matched the pace of her opponent in the opening set and surrendered. Krejčíková won the opening 6-2 and looked on course to win her second Grand Slam title in a one-sided dominance.

However, Paolini made a stunning comeback in the match and gave no room to her opponent in the second set. She improved her baseline play and reduced the unforced errors while Krejčíková lost her serve twice. Turning the tables, Paolini pocketed the second set 6-2 to set up an interesting final set in the women’s singles final.

Heading into the deciding set, Paolini had the advantage as she served first and the contest looked point-blank until the seventh game. In the seventh game of the third set, Krejčíková broke Paolini to break the only serve of the third set. Both players would then hold their serve before Krejčíková served for the Championships.

Serving for the title, the 28-year-old needed three Championships points to win her maiden Wimbledon singles title and also saved two break points at a crucial stage of the match.

With the win she joins Martina Navratilova (now US citizen), Petra Kvitová, Jana Novotná and Markéta Vondroušová to win the Wimbledon women’s singles title from Czech Republic.
