IPL 2024: Varun Chakravarthy asks bowlers to stop 'crying' about Impact Player rule
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) inched closer to booking a playoffspot with a convincing seven-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 47 of IPL 2024 on Monday (April 29), at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Opting to bat first, Rishabh Pant-led DC only managed 153 for 9 with Varun Chakravarthy claiming 3 for 16. In reply, KKR rode on Phil Salt's quickfire 68 to chase down the score in 16.3 overs. After the game, Player of the Match Chakravarthy opened up on the much-talked-about Impact Player rule in the IPL.
Many active bowlers and former cricketers as well as experts of the game have called for the removal of the Impact Player rule, with high scores becoming a norm and the new rule affecting bowlers and all-rounders. However, KKR star Chakravarthy has urged the bowlers to stop 'crying' and take up the challenge to still excel amid the odds.
After KKR's win over DC, Chakravarthy said, "Somewhere we have to accept that this IPL is different and we have to move on. The Impact Player was there last season, main thing is teams have used it better this season. They want to charge from first, how much ever the bowlers cry, you have to take up the challenge."
Further, Chakravarthy revealed that KKR was more than happy to bowl first after Pant & Co. decided to bat after the toss. At the post-match presser, he said, "Wickets have become very placid in the second innings. Definitely, it was good to bowl in the first innings the pitch was also little helpful. This pitch was a little more turning, in other matches it was not helping this much."
In KKR's last clash, where they lost to Punjab Kings (PBKS) -- at home -- despite posting 261 for 6, Chakravarthy went for plenty; ending with match figures of 3-0-46-0. Following the game, he revealed the pep talk given to him by co-owner Shahrukh Khan. He mentioned, "The last match was a very hard pill to swallow. We had conversations with the management, the bowling coach. SRK came to me yesterday and spoke to me personally, he said 'whatever is happening in the IPL, do not take it personally, don't self-doubt yourself."
