Nepal, which grappled with the horrific incident of a plane crash at the Kathmandu airport yesterday, has gone to Presidential polls today.

The president and the vice president are elected through voting by the Electoral College (EC). The EC is made up of leaders from the Federal Parliament as well as the Provincial Assemblies.

The elections usually take place a month after the formation of the Federal Parliament.

Nepal carried out two-phased Federal Parliament and Provincial Assembly elections last year in November and December.

The presidential election comes over a couple of months after the Federal Parliament and Provincial Assembly elections were held.

Separate polls will be held after a week to elect the new vice president.

Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari and Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun were elected in October 2015.
