BJP shares old clip of Indira Gandhi criticising judiciary amid row over MP’s remarks on SC

Hitting out at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey for his "Muslim commissioner" barb, former chief election commissioner S Y Quraishi on Monday said he believes in an idea of India where an individual is defined by his contributions, and asserted that "for some, religious identities are a staple to forward their hateful politics".
A day after Dubey's remarks, Quraishi received support from several politicians including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who said it is time to stand up for human worth over community labels.
Quraishi asserted that India "has, is and will always stand up and fight" for its constitutional institutions and principles.
"I served on the constitutional post of Election Commissioner to the best of my ability and had a long and fulfilling career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). I believe in an idea of India where an individual is defined by his or her talents and contributions and not by their religious identities," Quraishi told PTI.
"But I guess, for some, religious identities are a staple to forward their hateful politics. India has, is and will always stand up and fight for its constitutional institutions and principles," he said.
Earlier in the morning, without any reference, Quraishi posted, "'I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it' -- George Bernard Shaw. A very wise quote of the great author!" K Mahesh IAS, honorary president of the Delhi Administration Officers Academic Forum, backed Quraishi and said he was a "phenomenon" as both the election commissioner and the chief election commissioner.
"He held these great assignments with aplomb and distinction and greatly enriched the institution of the Election Commission by introducing a series of reforms. For example, he established a voters' education division, expenditure control division and he also founded the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management," Mahesh said.
Quraishi has held other assignments as a member of the Haryana cadre with great distinction and India is proud to have an IAS officer like him, he said.
Several political leaders and parties rallied behind Quraishi and slammed Dubey for his remarks.
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav hit out at Dubey, saying he should refrain from commenting on a former constitutional authority who has served the nation with distinction.
In a post on X, Yadav wrote, "One who has already been discredited by his own party for making a 'personal opinion' that is not worthy of endorsement should maintain silence on a retired constitutional officer. That would be more respectful." Tagging a report on Quraishi's remarks, Tharoor said, "He's absolutely right. As Martin Luther King famously said, he strove for a world where people would be judged not by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character. Today in India it is not skin colour, but religious or caste identity that some have chosen to privilege over 'the content of their character'. It is time to stand up for human worth over community labels." CPI General Secretary D Raja condemned Dubey's remarks and alleged that the BJP does not have any respect for the Constitution.
"SY Quraishi was an election commissioner, but this man calls him a Muslim Commissioner. It is atrocious, highly condemnable. What are Mr Modi and Mr Nadda going to say on this issue?" Raja asked.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut said Quraishi was one of the best election commissioners that this country has seen after T N Seshan.
"What kind of language have Modi-Shah spread in this country? These people who try to break the country do not deserve to live in this country," Raut said.
JD(U) spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad said the BJP was uncomfortable with what Dubey has said against Quraishi and his earlier comment, and the BJP president has distanced the party from the comment.
"This comment should also be seen in that category. It is not appropriate to make a religious comment on SY Quraishi," he said.
Dubey's barb at the former CEC came a day after his vitriolic attack on the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of Sanjiv Khanna, blaming the CJI for causing "civil wars" in India.
A day after the comments caused uproar, Dubey fired a salvo at Quraishi for commenting that the Waqf (Amendment) Act is a "sinister and evil plan of the government to grab Muslim lands". Reacting to Quraishi's remarks, Dubey had said, "You were not an election commissioner, you were a Muslim commissioner. The maximum number of Bangladeshi infiltrators were made voters in Santhal Pargana in Jharkhand during your tenure." Quraishi was the Chief Election Commissioner of India from July 2010 to June 2012.

The Indian space agency ISRO's twin satellites completed space docking for the second time on Sunday, 20th April, at 8:20 pm Indian time. This second docking further validates the software, sensors, and techniques that ISRO has devised to perform a "space handshake" between two satellites that are travelling at over 28,000 kmph around the Earth. "For accomplishing the first docking in January this year, we had to make four to five attempts. This time it was done like child's play," ISRO Chief Dr. V. Narayanan told WION's Sidharth M.P. The twin SPADEX satellites were launched on December 30th, 2024, using India's PSLV rocket.&nbsp;
During the first docking in January 2025, electrical power transfer between the two docked satellites was not done, and this time we have done it successfully, said the ISRO Chief. "Power transfer from SDX 02 to SDX 01 satellite, as well as vice versa, was also exercised and accomplished on Monday, 21st April, 2025. The experiment involved operating a heater element in one of the satellites through power from the other satellite. The duration of power transfer was approximately 4 minutes, and the performance of the satellites was as expected," ISRO elaborated.
A few weeks back, we also demonstrated the circumnavigation process, where one satellite moves around and inspects the other. Therefore, all planned objectives of the Space Docking Experiment(SPADEX) mission have been accomplished successfully, Dr. Narayanan said.&nbsp;
Queried about the further course of action with the twin SPADEX satellites, he said that both satellites have about 50 per cent fuel remaining and that multiple experiments can be performed in the coming times. Right now, the two satellites are docked, but we may decide to undock them in a couple of days, he added.&nbsp;
<h2>What is SPADEX?&nbsp;</h2>
Space Docking is a technology that would enable India's future space missions. India hopes to build an independent space station by the year 2035, and the first module(component) of this space station is meant to be launched in 2028. Space stations are built by autonomously assembling various modules while they circle the Earth. SPADEX is India's maiden attempt at space docking, which is the process of coupling two satellites into a single unified entity. India's Chandrayaan-4 Lunar sample return mission will also involve highly sophisticated space docking. So far, only the US, Russia, and China have mastered space docking technology.&nbsp;
<h2>Applications of Space Docking&nbsp;</h2>
Docking establishes a mechanical link between one orbiting spacecraft and another equally sized or larger orbiting body. When astronauts travel to the space station, the craft which carries them has to dock with the space station, following which the crew can move to the orbiting lab. Cargo is also delivered to the space station in a similar fashion. Likewise, docking can enable the transfer of fuel between two spacecraft, thereby extending the life of the recipient craft.&nbsp;
<h2>Why is Space docking so complicated?&nbsp;</h2>
When a chaser spacecraft is approaching the target spacecraft, the relative velocity between the two(the difference in velocity between the two) must be controlled very carefully. If the relative velocity is too high, the docking attempt can fail, causing damage or collisions. If it is too low, it may take too long to complete the approach, which could lead to fuel loss or mission delays.
When the spacecraft docks, their relative velocity must be near-zero. This means that the two spacecraft must be moving at the same velocity and in the same direction at the time of docking to ensure a smooth connection without any impact forces. This requires careful coordination and manoeuvring, all done fully autonomously.

'All SPADEX mission goals aced; 50% fuel remains': ISRO Chief to WION

A judge of a Delhi court was verbally abused, harassed and threatened in the open courtroom by a man whom she convicted in a six-year-old check bounce case, The conviction of the accused, a 63-year-old retired government teacher, under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act by the judge Shivangi Mangla led to a shocking scene in the court as the former hurled profanities. &ldquo;Tu hai kya cheez... tu bahar mil dekhte hain kaise zinda ghar jaati hai (who are you even? Meet us outside, and we will see how you return home alive),&rdquo; the accused said as the judge passed the order convicting him at a court in Delhi&rsquo;s Dwarka on April 2. The convict and his counsel even demanded that the judge resign or else they would complain against her and force her to resign. She has referred the matter to the district and sessions judge so it could be forwarded to the Delhi High Court for appropriate proceedings. Appropriate action should also be taken against the accused by the National Commission for Women, she said.&nbsp;

ISRO achieves second successful docking of SpaDeX satellites

Snow persistence -- or snow that usually stays on the ground between November and March -- was 23.6 per cent below normal levels in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region this year, a record low in the last 23 years, according to a new report published on Monday.
This marks the third consecutive year of below-normal seasonal snow across the region, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), an intergovernmental body, said in the 2025 HKH Snow Update report.
Snow that typically remains on the ground during winter months has been melting faster or not falling in expected amounts. This snowmelt is a crucial water source for rivers, especially during the dry season.
The sharp drop in snow levels across the region could seriously affect water supply to nearly two billion people in India and neighbouring countries. The Ganges basin experienced its lowest snow persistence in over two decades, at 24.1 per cent below normal, which means less snowmelt will be available in early summer, a time when demand for farming and drinking water is high.
Snow persistence dropped 27.9 per cent below normal in the Brahmaputra basin, which could hit hydropower generation and agriculture hard.
The Indus basin, which supports millions of people in India and Pakistan, also reported a continued decline in snow cover. While the drop in 2025 was slightly less severe than in 2024, snow persistence remained 16 per cent below normal.
ICIMOD experts warned that if this trend continues, the region could face more frequent water shortages, forcing greater reliance on groundwater and raising the risk of droughts.
They suggested that governments and water agencies must act swiftly by preparing water-saving plans, improving drought response, and using scientific data to manage resources more effectively.

He added, "Of course, our relationship is such that we are doing anything that is part of our human endeavour from part of our bilateral engagement ... so all these bilateral issues will be discussed and we are very positive that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties."

During the weekly media briefing last Thursday (Apr 17), on being asked about the possibility of tariff discussions Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "We have a comprehensive strategic global partnership; when you have that level of partnership with any country, obviously, you will discuss all relevant issues." He added, "Of course, our relationship is such that we are doing anything that is part of our human endeavour from part of our bilateral engagement ... so all these bilateral issues will be discussed and we are very positive that the visit will give a further boost to our bilateral ties." He also highlighted that the discussions between both countries regarding a potential trade agreement. "We are talking to the US side so that a bilateral trade agreement can be done," he said.

JD Vance's India visit: Delhi traffic police releases advisory, CHECK suggested routes and diversions

Delhi Airport authorities, on Sunday (Apr 20), issued a clarification addressing the diversion of a Delhi-bound IndiGo flight with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on board, stating that the situation arose due to the temporary closure of a runway for upgradation work.&nbsp;
The authorities further emphasised that it was incorrect to blame the airport for the delays.
"Dear Mr Abdullah, further to our exchange of morning, would highlight that it is incorrect to blame Delhi airport for the current delays/ diversions. The fact is- The closure of Runway 10/28 since 8th April for essential Instrument Landing System (ILS) upgradation," the airport said in its response to Abdullah's post on X.
Delhi Airport authorities initially attributed the diversion of the IndiGo flight carrying Abdullah to operational issues due to the ongoing infrastructure work and changes in wind patterns.&nbsp;
The airport said that it had issued multiple advisories about the "unseasonal changing" wind patterns. It further stated that the runway 10/28 was closed since April 8 for Instrument Landing System (ILS) upgrades after consulting stakeholders and analysing historical wind data.
"Dear Mr Abdullah, as you may be aware, we've issued several advisories regarding the unseasonal changing wind patterns in Delhi. Runway 10/28 has been closed for ILS upgradation since 8th April, following consultation with all stakeholders and based on historical wind patterns," the airport said.

"Additionally, the shift toward more easterly winds and the use of converging runways for easterly arrivals have led to temporary capacity constraints during this upgrade. These conditions, at times, result in flight diversions to ensure passenger safety. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused," it said.

This comes after Abdullah slammed the Delhi Airport calling it a "sh*t show".
The Delhi-bound IndiGo flight, with the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister on board, was diverted to Jaipur on Saturday night and reached the national capital in the early hours of Sunday.
The flight reportedly departed from Japur at 2:00 am, and Abdullah confirmed that it landed in Delhi just after 3:00 am.

The driver of the bus filed a complaint against the teenager, and a case has been registered with the Bhandup police against the minor under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. The boy has been charged with attempt to murder and criminal intimidation, the report said.
The boy has also landed in trouble with the police previously. Last year, he faced three cases at the same police station.

Indian national Kulbhushan Jadhav held in Pakistan over espionage charges was not allowed the right to appeal to a higher court despite the verdict by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2019, said the Pakistani government in the Supreme Court on Thursday, according to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn.&nbsp;
Pak defence ministry counsel Khawaja Haris Ahmed, appearing before a seven-judge constitutional bench argued that Jadhav was only allowed consular access and not a legal right to challenge his sentence.

Jadhav, after his arrest by Pakistani authorities in 2016 was charged of spying and sentenced to death the following year. However, India rejected the charges levelled against him and approached the International Court of Justice which stayed Jadhav&rsquo;s execution in 2018 and in 2019 upheld Kulbhushan Jadhav&rsquo;s right to consular access.
"Court finds that Pakistan deprived India of the right to communicate with and have access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, to visit him in detention and to arrange for his legal representation and thereby breached obligations incumbent upon it under Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,&rdquo; the ICJ ruling read, as per India Today.

Kulbhushan Jadhav is a former Indian Navy officer, who was arrested by the Pakistani authorities in March 2016 reportedly from Balochistan. Pakistan has alleged that Jadhav worked &nbsp;for India's external spy agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&amp;AW) and was behind terrorist activities in their country. Pakistan had also released a video of Jadhav 'confessing' to be a RAW agent.
After his arrest Pakistan slapped charges of spying against Jadhav and sentenced him to death the following year.
It was then that India which constantly rejected the charges and approached the International Court of Justice. Post ICJ ruling in 2019, Pakistan has granted only one consular access to Jadhav, reported Mint.&nbsp;
