Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday (Mar 28) hit out at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter's remarks on the country's judiciary. Prominent lawyers including Harish Salve, Manan Kumar Mishra and Adish Aggarwala wrote to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud expressing concern over attempts to undermine the judiciary’s integrity.

In the letter to CJI Chandrachud, the lawyers said that they were expressing concerns about how a vested interest group was trying to press the judiciary, influence the judicial process and defame the country's courts based on frivolous logic and stale political agendas.

"Their antics are vitiating the atmosphere of trust and harmony, which characterises the functioning of the judiciary," the letter added.

Modi vs Congress over the letter

In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi on Thursday shared the letter and slammed the Congress. "To browbeat and bully others is vintage Congress culture. 5 decades ago itself they had called for a "committed judiciary" - they shamelessly want commitment from others for their selfish interests but desist from any commitment towards the nation," Modi said.

"No wonder 140 crore Indians are rejecting them," he added.

Kharge hits back

Hitting back at the prime minister, Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge said, "...you are obviously not aware, but it is not proper form for the PM to comment on our judiciary."

Kharge posed four questions to Modi among which one included about former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections.

"Modi ji, India's institutions are the property of India's people. You are personally responsible for usurping their powers and weakening our country," Kharge said.

"The Congress party helped build and nurture these institutions. Thousands of our workers and leaders gave their lives for them. We will take these institutions back from you and return them to the people of India," the Congress chief added.
