Who is General Upendra Dwivedi, the newly appointed chief of the Indian Army?
Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff
Indian Ministry of Defence on Tuesday (Jun 11) appointed Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the new Army chief. He will take over from General Manoj Pande from the afternoon of 30 June 2024, according to a statement. The extended tenure of General Pande will come to an end on that day. General Dwivedi is currently serving as the vice-chief in the Indian Army and was a natural contender for the post.
Before taking up the role of vice Army chief, Dwivedi served as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief in the Northern Command of the Army which looks after the borders with both Pakistan and China.
Who is General Upendra Dwivedi?
With a career spanning over 39 years, General Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa (Madhya Pradesh). He was commissioned into the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984. Later, he went on to command the same unit.

During his career, he served in both Northern and Western Theatres. He has the experience of commanding units in Kashmir Valley as well as in Rajasthan. He led the Northern Command, a crucial arm of the Indian Army, from 2022 to 2024 and was in charge of the planning and execution of sustained operations along the northern and western borders.
During this time, he actively participated in the ongoing border peace talks with China. His previous experience with China gave him an edge for his latest appointment as the army chief, according to the defence establishment.

He worked in important positions in different parts of the army, like Brigade Headquarters, Mountain Division, Strike Corps, and Integrated Headquarters.
As Director General of Infantry, he made sure to quickly get the weapons needed by the army. When he was Deputy Chief of Army Staff, he focused on using technology to automate tasks and incorporate new technologies into the Indian Army.
