The Indian Army has always been at the forefront of helping people in times of need, extending its role far beyond the call of duty to bring relief, support and hope to communities. As Indian and American soldiers train together in the Himalayas during the 22nd edition of Yudh Abhyas, the exercise highlights a battlefield where both soldiers and military technology are pushed to their limits. Speaking to WION's Defence Pulse, Major General Yash Mor (Retd.), an Indian Army veteran with extensive high-altitude experience, explained why operating in the Himalayas presents challenges few militaries routinely encounter. Gen. Mor has served two tenures in Ladakh, including Eastern Ladakh, and has operated across high-altitude areas during his Army career. He pointed to decades of Indian experience in environments ranging from Siachen to the battlefields of Kargil. “I don't think any other army in the world has the high-altitude warfare experience that we have.” This year's exercise is also demonstrating how technology is changing mountain warfare. Drones, autonomous systems and counter-drone capabilities are being incorporated alongside conventional infantry operations. American troops from the 11th Airborne Division, known as the Arctic Angels, are bringing their own experience of operating in extreme cold. WATCH:
<oembed url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdd0aQmqLew&list=PLKwyKu6LhauQ&index=4"></oembed>
Gen Mor said modern conflicts have accelerated the military emphasis on drones, robotics and network-centric warfare. But high altitude creates an additional problem. Technology that performs reliably elsewhere can suffer significant degradation in extreme cold and thin air. He explains how engines, batteries, electronics, communications equipment and other military systems can see their performance fall dramatically during severe winters. “Equipment really takes a beating in high-altitude terrain. Maintenance of equipment and safeguarding of equipment is a challenge which not many people understand unless they handle the equipment.” The same environment places enormous demands on soldiers. Acclimatisation, nutrition, health, morale and the ability to sustain operations at temperatures that can fall below minus 30 degrees Celsius become as important as weapons and sensors. Yudh Abhyas 2026 therefore represents more than interoperability between two armies. It brings emerging battlefield technologies into one of the world's most unforgiving combat environments, combining the lessons of modern drone warfare with India's decades of experience fighting and operating at extreme altitude.

Indian and US troops have begun their largest annual land exercise in more than two decades, splitting 1,200 soldiers between the high Himalayas of Uttarakhand and the firing ranges of Rajasthan to practise mountain warfare, drones and long-range fires. The 22nd edition of Yudh Abhyas opened on Tuesday at Auli Foreign Training Node, where Major General Amaresh Gunjan, General Officer Commanding of the Indian Army’s 14 Infantry Division, and Colonel Benjamin Jackman of the US 11th Airborne Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team addressed contingents of about 600 personnel from each side. Training is running in parallel at Mahajan Field Firing Range. The US force includes soldiers from the 11th Airborne Division, known as the “Arctic Angels”. Officials said the two-week drill will move from academic exchanges on space, cyber and multi-domain operations to a brigade-level command post exercise, field lanes, counter-drone training at Auli, and live-fire serials at Mahajan involving HIMARS, Stinger missiles and the Mobile Low, Slow, Small Unmanned Aircraft Integrated Defeat System, or M-LIDS. Also Read: India dismisses Pakistan bounty on Masood Azhar as 'phony' “Yudh Abhyas 2026 provides our soldiers an opportunity to enhance bilateral readiness, cooperation and interoperability,” Jackman said. “By training alongside the Indian Army, we are strengthening our mutual trust and building combat credibility.” The Indian side framed the exercise as a full-spectrum test. “Exercise Yudh Abhyas gives us a platform to exchange tactics, techniques and procedures across the full spectrum of multidomain operations, from precision fires at Mahajan to mountain warfare here in Auli,” he said. “It strengthens the bond between our armies and prepares us to prevail together in any environment.” India’s defence ministry said the aim is to improve the two armies’ ability to employ Integrated Battle Groups in mountainous and semi-mountainous terrain, with an emphasis on infantry-led operations. Technology is a central theme as drones and autonomous systems will be used for surveillance and reconnaissance, contemporary weapons will be demonstrated at Mahajan, and subject-matter experts will compare notes on emerging multi-domain warfare. The most powerful missile, the most sophisticated fighter or the longest-range artillery system is only as effective as the information reaching the people operating it and the fluidity with which they communicate amongst themselves. As warfare becomes increasingly networked, secure communication is emerging as one of the battlefield's most critical capabilities. Be it crews operating aircraft, armoured vehicles or artillery, they must remain connected even in extreme noise and hostile electronic environments. India is placing growing emphasis on this challenge. The Indian Army has identified 2026 as its “Year of Networking and Data Centricity”, reflecting the growing importance of connecting sensors, decision-makers and weapons across the battlefield. The challenge, however, extends beyond encryption and secure networks. A soldier or aircrew member still needs to clearly hear and communicate while surrounded by rotor noise, wind, engines or weapons fire. Speaking on WION's Defence Pulse, Klaus Frühwirth, Chief Commercial Officer of Norwegian mission-critical communications company Axnes, said communications are becoming increasingly central to modern military operations. “In modern operations, communication is increasingly more mission-critical than ever. Good, reliable communication in loud and challenging environments is very, very important,” said Frühwirth. Frühwirth, an aviator with more than two decades of aerospace and defence industry experience, highlighted the changing demands placed on military communications. It has to be intuitive. The user must not think about the communication. They just want to talk and it has to work,” Frühwirth told WION. He further adds that networks are becoming far more integrated, connecting multiple radios and communication loops. The communications system is therefore evolving from an accessory into part of the “communication backbone” of helicopters, tanks, armoured vehicles and gun systems. India is also attracting global communications companies as its defence manufacturing ecosystem expands. Frühwirth described India as an “extremely interesting” market with strong capabilities across aviation, gun systems and ground vehicles, adding that Axnes is interested in cooperating with Indian companies. In tomorrow's battlefield, weapons will increasingly be connected nodes in a larger combat network. The weapon may deliver the strike. But communications make the strike possible.

India is strengthening its air defence network with the development of Project Kusha, an indigenous long-range air defence system designed to complement the Russian-made S-400. The new system aims to intercept enemy aircraft, drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missile threats at multiple ranges. Together, the S-400 and Project Kusha could create a layered missile shield capable of protecting critical military and civilian infrastructure. As regional security challenges evolve, India's push for self-reliance in defence technology marks a major step toward building a robust and modern air defence architecture.

Indian Army Aviation pilots performed an exceptional precision and courage high-altitude casualty evacuation drive at 18,600 feet near the Nun Kun massif on Saturday (August 29) to pull a patient from a sheer mountain slope. The executed operation, defying fierce winds and treacherous terrain, has shown a marvellous and exceptional role of the Indian Army. While launching the evacuation drive beyond the aviation capabilities, the crew experienced a razor-thin window for success because the last available light of the day rapidly vented out over the high-altitude zone. To fly at 18,600 feet, where the thin air makes it hard for engines and rotors to work properly, the pilots had to take special steps to get the helicopter ready. They removed everything that wasn't absolutely necessary to make the aircraft as light as possible. The helicopter also carried very little fuel, just enough to complete the rescue while staying light enough to fly well. When the crew reached the injured person, they faced strong winds and a steep slope with no flat place to land. With no margin for mistakes, the pilots carefully held the helicopter in a risky hover, balancing it with only one skid touching the slope. They quickly got the patient into the aircraft, then lifted off and flew back down safely.
Netizens lauded Indian Army efforts
Video of the rescue mission at 18,600 ft is making rounds over social media, where netizens lauded the effort and risk of the Indian Army for their unwavering commitment. In a post on social media platform X, the official account of Fire and Fury Corps, Indian Army, said, "In a daring rescue mission at 18,600 ft near Nun Kun, Indian Army Aviation pilots evacuated a casualty from an extremely challenging slope with no landing space and strong winds. With the helicopter lightened by removing non-essential equipment and carrying limited fuel, the aviators executed the evacuation with exceptional precision, courage and determination, including a critical landing with one skid touching the slope. The mission, undertaken at the last available landing window of the day, stands as a testament to the skill, courage and compassion of Indian Army Aviation."

While launching the evacuation drive beyond the aviation capabilities, the crew experienced a razor-thin window for success because the last available light of the day rapidly vented out over the high-altitude zone.

Netizens lauded Indian Army efforts Video of the rescue mission at 18,600 ft is making rounds over social media, where netizens lauded the effort and risk of the Indian Army for their unwavering commitment. Some of the users appreciated how the Cheetah helicopter was operated in this mission despite its age.

An assault dog with the Indian Army’s 2 Para Special Forces has been honoured during the Independence Day 2026 celebrations for displaying “bravery and extraordinary courage” during a counter-insurgency operation in J&K under Operation Rakshak early this year. The dog, named Tyson, a German Shepherd belonging to the Remount Veterinary Corps, was among 89 Mention-in-Despatches (MiD) by President Droupadi Murmu on I-Day eve on Friday. The dog's bravery appeared during Operation Trashi-I, launched in the Chatroo belt of Kishtwar district in J&K on February 22 this year, when Tyson moved ahead of the troops and found a hidden terrorist. Seeing the terrorist, Tyson pressed forward and launched a fierce assault, compelling the terrorists to open fire, and the dog was shot on the leg. Soon after the incident, he was airlifted to Command Hospital, Udhampur, for emergency treatment and has since recovered. Also read: Two American airlines jets nearly cross paths after flight number mix-up over Phoenix
Three Pakistan-sponsored terrorists
“Tyson displayed extraordinary courage by taking the first bullet while leading the entry into the terrorists’ hideout. A historic military tradition between India and Nepal is facing an uncertain future. Gorkha veterans are reportedly demanding that Kathmandu clears the way for Nepali youths to join the Indian Army again. The second week of Parliament's Monsoon Session is expected to witness intense political confrontation after the first week was disrupted by nationwide student protests over the alleged NEET paper leak. Although the protests have ended following the resignation of former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the opposition is preparing to raise fresh questions over the alleged use of force by Delhi Police during the July 20 protest march.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking answers on the alleged deployment of pellet guns and plainclothes personnel against protesting students. Congress and other opposition parties are also expected to raise issues including the alleged Ram Janmabhoomi embezzlement case, the proposed India–US trade agreement, agricultural concerns, ethanol policy, and fresh protests planned by transport operators.

When we hang up our uniforms, the oath to serve the nation does not expire; it merely finds a new canvas. In the scorching expanse of the Thar Desert, where temperatures regularly breach the 50-degree mark, a quiet revolution is taking place. It is a story of jointsmanship and civil-military liaison, in which the Indian Army and its veterans have stepped up to serve as the ultimate shield for our nation's most vulnerable: the wildlife of the desert ecosystem.
Healing the Lifeline of the Desert
My journey into this latest chapter began when, in May 2026, Amaraah Foundation, New Delhi, led by its deeply compassionate, animal-loving Managing Trustee, Mrs Jyotsana Sharma, expressed a desire to assist DCF Sandeep K. The Indian Army has chosen to equip thousands of its Negev light machine guns with Israeli magnification telescopes, which would help users engage targets effectively at extended ranges. Israeli firm Meprolight announced that the Indian Army selected its 'MEPRO X6' variant of telescopic sight for use as the dedicated daytime optic for its in-service Negev machine guns. Originally designed and developed by Israel Weapon Industries(IWI), the Negev guns are now being made in India, after the Indian Army placed an order for 41,000 guns in August 2024. The locally made guns with more than 50% indigenous content are being delivered in a phased manner, with 2,000 guns rolled out in March 2026.According to Meprolight, the Indian Army sought an advanced daytime optic capable of enhancing operational effectiveness of its Negev guns at extended ranges. The Army’s evaluation process included extensive user assessments and rigorous environmental testing focused on reliability, durability, accuracy and ease of operation under demanding conditions. The 'MEPRO X6' was developed specifically to meet the Indian Army’s requirements and is optimized for use with the Negev light machine gun (LMG). Its key advantages include a lightweight, relatively compact design; high-quality optical performance; and a reticle and ranging scale specifically tailored to the NEGEV platform."The order covers the procurement of more than 10,000 'MEPRO X6' units, with deliveries scheduled throughout 2026 and 2027. These sights are intended for the Negev order recently announced by our sister company, Israel Weapon Industries. Given that the quantity associated with that NEGEV order is approximately four times larger, there is potential to expand the scope of this program through additional follow-on requirements as implementation progresses," Meprolight Senior Vice President Golan Kalimi told WION's Sidharth.M.P.The Israeli firm said that it has signed a comprehensive Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with RRP Defense, under which the company will transfer the knowledge, processes and manufacturing capabilities required for full production of the 'MEPRO X6' in India. RRP Defense will manufacture the sights in India and supply them to Indian Government firm Bharat Electronics Limited, which will serve as the prime contractor to the Indian Army under the program. The sights will be manufactured by RRP Defense in Mumbai, India.Queried about Meprolight's exposure to the Indian market, Kalimi said the firm has been active here for approximately 25 years and has built a longstanding relationship with the country’s defense sector. Over these years, a range of Meprolight systems have been supplied and used in India, including the 'MEPRO MOR', 'GLS', and 'MEPRO X6' optics and night vision sights.

India is likely to place its largest-ever military drone order, with planned purchases from domestic manufacturers expected to exceed $2 billion, according to an industry body working closely with the government. The move reflects New Delhi's growing focus on unmanned warfare capabilities as global conflicts reshape military planning and battlefield tactics. Speaking to Reuters, Smit Shah, President of the Drone Federation India (DFI), said procurement plans were at an advanced stage and could surpass 200 billion rupees ($2 billion) in the next phase of acquisitions. The proposed order would represent a sharp increase from recent government contracts worth around 30 billion rupees ($313 million) for tactical-class drones. "In the next phase, tactical drone procurements in India may exceed 200 billion rupees, or more than $2 billion," Shah told Reuters. The sector includes established players such as Adani Group, Larsen & Toubro and Tata Advanced Systems, alongside specialist firms including ideaForge, NewSpace Research and Asteria Aerospace. These companies develop reconnaissance drones, loitering munitions, logistics platforms, precision-strike systems and critical drone components. India has streamlined defence procurement procedures and expanded programmes such as Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) to support startups, fund prototypes and accelerate production. The government has also widened procurement opportunities for private firms while encouraging repeat orders that allow manufacturers to refine and scale their technologies. "The changes are reshaping India's drone industry," Shah said, adding that stronger order visibility, increased investment and partnerships with larger defence companies are helping firms expand manufacturing and research capabilities to meet rising military demand.

The country now has more than 600 companies producing drones and components, with over 100 focused on defence applications.

The emphasis on indigenous capabilities was reflected during Operation Sindoor, where India deployed domestically developed drones, loitering munitions and precision-guided systems in strikes on key Pakistani military installations.

One year has passed since the Indian Armed Forces launched ‘Operation Sindoor’ against terrorism in Pakistan. To mark the anniversary, the Indian Army released a video, saying, ‘India forgets nothing, India forgives nothing.’ The 1-minute-28-second video was posted on X at exactly 1:05 am, the same time the operation started on the night of May 6–7 last year. During the mission, which lasted around 25 minutes, the Air Force carried out strikes on nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), reportedly eliminating over 100 terrorists. The video opens with a statement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in which he warns terrorists and their handlers. It then shows how India and its armed forces prepared for Operation Sindoor following the April 22, 2025, Pahalgam attack, and how the mission targeted terrorist networks based in Pakistan. Visuals of destruction at terror camps and military sites are also included.
Watch the video here

Operation Sindoor: 25 minutes, 9 targets
After the Pahalgam attack, the Indian armed forces launched Operation Sindoor on the night of May 6–7. Within about 25 minutes, nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK were destroyed. The strikes targeted bases linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen. More than 100 terrorists were reportedly killed in the operation. Among the casualties were 10 relatives of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief and most-wanted terrorist Masood Azhar. India’s action triggered a strong response from Pakistan, which attempted retaliatory strikes. However, Indian forces thwarted these efforts and responded with counterattacks, targeting Pakistani airbases and key installations. Incoming missiles from Pakistan were intercepted mid-air by India’s air defense systems. The confrontation lasted for four days. As pressure mounted, Pakistan requested a ceasefire. India agreed, and a ceasefire was implemented on May 10.
Justice for Pahalgam victims
On April 22, 2025, terrorists carried out a brutal attack in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, killing 26 innocent people. Tourists visiting the valley were shot after being asked about their religion. In several cases, attackers killed men in front of their families, leaving deep trauma behind. To deliver justice for the victims of this attack, India named its counter-terror operation ‘Operation Sindoor’.
