The Indian Army has confirmed the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) during Operation Sindoor, the counter-terror operation in Pakistan in the month of May, weeks after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking to reporters in Delhi on Monday, Lt Gen Rajiv Kumar Sahni, who is currently serving as Director General, Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) and had earlier held the charge of DG Information Systems, said that AI was used for "review, intel analysis..to generate heat maps" and that helped to "prioritise our resources".One of the examples he gave was of "Anuman 2.0", a weather forecasting app, that helped the army units to engage with precision across the border. Asked if AI was used to find the position of the infantry on the other side, he said the military has "reasonably assured models, satellite tracking systems, feed which is given in real time" that helped in that purpose as well. His emphasis was that the Indian Army has begun integrating AI into its core functions, and its effectiveness was demonstrated during Operation Sindoor. Important to note that the year 2024-25 has been designated as the “Year of Technology Absorption” by the Indian army. Automation within the Army has led to a remarkable 1,200% increase in users and a 620% rise in data storage capacity, advances that are expected to make the Army's digital backbone more interconnected.AI apps used in the forces include, Electronic Intelligence Collation & Analysis System (ECAS), which helps identify critical threats, and the TRINETRA System, which provides Common Operational Picture for better coordination, situational awareness. Last year, the Indian army established the Army AI Research and Incubation Centre (AARIC) in Bengaluru that aims to accelerate AI project development through partnerships with DRDO, academia, and industry.

The Indian Army's head of Artillery division, Lt Gen Adosh Kumar has said that India was able to "neutralize" Pakistan's "imported weapons" during operation Sindoor. The counter terror operation by India, after the Pahalgam terror attack, saw India striking on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir. Speaking to Sidhant Sibal on WION podcast said, " Our indigenous weapons successfully neutralized the enemy's fancied imported weapons and equipment. We need to sustain this momentum. We need to invest more in R&D ". Lt Gen Adosh Kumar was commissioned into the Indian Army in June 1986, and has over 39 years of experience. He took charge as the Director General of Artillery in May 2023. The regiment of artillery is the second largest operational arm of the Indian Army, after the infantry. Comprising over 250 units, the regiment manages a wide array of artillery systems, guns, rockets, missiles and surveillance assets.

ZAPAD 2025, a joint military exercise between Russian and Belarusian forces, has started on 12 September and will end on September 16 amid escalating tensions in the region. The locations for the exercise have been included in the city of Barysaw, about 74 kilometres (46 miles) northeast of Belarus's capital, Minsk, and the Grodno region, bordering Poland and Lithuania. In addition, some exercises will take place in western Russia, along with the deployment of the Navy in the Baltic and Barents seas, and the Arctic Ocean, according to a report in DW. In 2025, fewer than 13,000 troops have attended the exercises from the two participating nations. Before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Moscow in 2021, around 200,000 troops from Russia and Belarus were involved in the ZAPAD exercise. Meanwhile, an Indian Armed Forces contingent comprising 65 personnel also departed on September 9 for the Mulino Training Ground, Nizhniy, Russia, to participate in the multilateral joint military exercise ZAPAD 2025. The contingent of the Indian Army comprises 57 personnel ,along with 07 personnel from the Indian Air Force and 01 from the Indian Navy. It is being led by a battalion of the KUMAON Regiment, accompanied by troops from other arms and services.
What is ZAPAD 2025 anti-NATO exercise?
ZAPAD drills are held every four years, in which Russia and its chief European ally, Belarus, take part in joint military exercises in each of their regions. The key event of the exercise is the "Union State" forces, a joint economic and defence partnership between Russia and Belarus, to simulate and prepare for possible conflict. The first drills occurred in 1999 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and since 2009, it has been conducted every four years. The last exercise of ZAPAD held in 2021, before the full-scale invasion by Russia of Ukraine, according to a report in DW. It is also aimed to enhance military cooperation, improve interoperability, and provide a platform for participating armies to exchange tactics, techniques and procedures in the domains of conventional warfare and counter-terrorism operations. The drill is done in open and plain terrain during joint company-level operations. In this, troops undertake missions ranging from joint planning, tactical drills, and special arms skills.
Why is NATO worried about ZAPAD 2025 drills?
As soon as the exercise began near NATO borders and followed alleged Russian drone incursions into Poland and Romania, concern among European neighbours arose. NATO and nearby countries are interpreting these drills as provocative and a test of readiness, according to a report in Associated Press. Russia has used the drills to display advanced weapon capabilities, launching hypersonic missiles (like Zircon) from a frigate in the Barents Sea, performing simulated bombing runs with Su-34s, and flying MiG-31s equipped with hypersonic ballistic missiles (Kinzhal), as per the Reuters report.

Mounted on a single vehicle, it will be able to direct the fire of at least two L/70 guns or equivalent successors, while also feeding target data to Very Short Range Air Defence Systems (VSHORADS). During Operation Sindoor, drone swarms were extensively employed by Pakistan for reconnaissance and attempts to strike both civilian and defence assets. The Army has noted that its existing anti-aircraft guns such as the L/70, ZU-23-2, and Schilka platforms performed commendably against these threats. However, commanders believe pairing these with modern fire-control radars — capable of detecting, identifying, and engaging even miniature drones — would sharply improve response effectiveness. The new systems, the Army has stated, should be able to process inputs from multiple radars and optical devices, generate firing solutions, and automatically feed data both to gun systems and shoulder-launched air defence missiles.

When we talk about defence reforms, the conversation almost always drifts to tanks, missiles, or drones. Necessary, yes. But ask any soldier and you’ll hear a quieter truth: morale is as decisive as firepower. And morale is built not just on equipment in the field, but on the well-being of families at home. That is why the GST Council’s decision of 3 September 2025, coming into effect on 22 September, matters so much. On the surface, it is a fiscal measure — trimming tax rates, exempting categories of hardware and goods. In reality, it is a reform that touches every serving soldier, every veteran, and every family living in a cantonment.
Salaries, pensions, and purchasing power
India’s defence budget this year is ₹6.81 lakh crore. Of that, a staggering ₹1.47 lakh crore goes to salaries and pensions for serving personnel, retirees, and their dependents. This is the real backbone of our military community.Until now, GST added a hidden weight to household expenses. Groceries, school fees, appliances, even uniforms — the cumulative bite was felt in every cantonment home. The latest rationalisation, which reduces GST rates to simpler 5 and 18 per cent slabs and exempts many essentials, means those rupees stretch further. For a sepoy’s family, that might mean not putting off the purchase of a new washing machine. For a pensioner in Jaipur, it might mean medicines that cost less each month. Small things, perhaps. But together, they add up to dignity and security.
The cantonment economy
Walk through a market in Ambala, Pune, or Jalandhar and you’ll see what this really means. Local shopkeepers, grocers, tailors, and electronics vendors all depend heavily on defence families’ spending. When GST on essentials falls, demand rises. And when demand rises, small-town economies breathe easier. The Army doesn’t just defend borders. It sustains entire communities in cantonments across the country. The GST reform gives those communities a timely boost, especially as we head into the festive season.
Linking morale to readiness
It is easy to forget how tightly morale links to readiness. A jawan manning a post on the Line of Control fights with a different resolve when he knows his family is comfortable back home. A major commanding a company in Ladakh sleeps a little easier when school bills and household expenses don’t consume his wife’s evenings.Fiscal relief, at the family level, reduces stress on serving personnel. And reduced stress translates directly into focus on the mission. We often talk of drones as force multipliers. But morale is a force multiplier too — and this reform strengthens it.
Veterans and their families
Let’s not overlook veterans. Many live on fixed pensions, watching costs creep upward year after year. For them, GST relief is not a technicality — it is a lifeline. Lower tax on essentials means less pressure on monthly budgets, less reliance on support networks, and more dignity in retirement. For widows and dependents of soldiers, this reform is equally important. It is a quiet acknowledgement that service to the nation extends beyond uniformed years, and that the state still stands behind those who stood for it.
Beyond the household: A national signal
The government is prepared to absorb between ₹48,000 crore and ₹1.1 lakh crore in revenue loss to make this reform work, depending on how the calculation is framed — lower if you look at the wider GST impact across government, higher when scoped specifically to defence-related procurement. That figure tells its own story. It is not just about balancing accounts — it is about prioritising security, not only at the border but in the lives of those who guard it.National security is not just a line of tanks. It is also the confidence of a soldier’s child in Shillong who can afford better books, or a veteran’s widow in Bhopal who manages her bills more comfortably. By easing life for soldiers and their families, the government sends a signal that security policy is people policy too.
A reform felt at home and on the frontier
GST 2.0 will be written up as a tax reform. But for those in uniform and those who once wore it, it will be remembered as something else: a morale reform. It makes pay and pensions go further. It strengthens cantonment economies. It uplifts veterans and their families. And in doing so, it strengthens the Army itself.Because when a military family feels secure in Ambala or Leh, the Army’s resolve on the frontier becomes that much stronger. That is the true morale dividend of GST 2.0.Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.

Beyond the household: A national signal The government is prepared to absorb between ₹48,000 crore and ₹1.1 lakh crore in revenue loss to make this reform work, depending on how the calculation is framed — lower if you look at the wider GST impact across government, higher when scoped specifically to defence-related procurement. That figure tells its own story. It is not just about balancing accounts — it is about prioritising security, not only at the border but in the lives of those who guard it. National security is not just a line of tanks. It is also the confidence of a soldier’s child in Shillong who can afford better books, or a veteran’s widow in Bhopal who manages her bills more comfortably. By easing life for soldiers and their families, the government sends a signal that security policy is people policy too. A reform felt at home and on the frontier GST 2.0 will be written up as a tax reform. But for those in uniform and those who once wore it, it will be remembered as something else: a morale reform. It makes pay and pensions go further. It strengthens cantonment economies. It uplifts veterans and their families. And in doing so, it strengthens the Army itself. Because when a military family feels secure in Ambala or Leh, the Army’s resolve on the frontier becomes that much stronger. That is the true morale dividend of GST 2.0. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.

The latest rationalisation, which reduces GST rates to simpler 5 and 18 per cent slabs and exempts many essentials, means those rupees stretch further.

The morale dividend: What GST relief means for soldiers and veterans

While speaking at IIT Madras, he mentioned that during Operation Sindoor, they played chess. The Army chief stressed that they did not know what Pakistan's next move was going to be, and hence what they would do."In Operation Sindoor, we played chess... We did not know what the enemy's next move was going to be, and what we were going to do. This is called greyzone," he said, at the inauguration of Agnishodh, the Indian Army's Research Cell at IIT Madras. The Army chief further explained what a Greyzone is. “It means that we are not going for the conventional operations. What we are doing is just short of a conventional operation... We were making the chess moves, and he (the enemy) was also making the chess moves.
