The Indian Army received 2,000 Israeli Negev Light Machine Guns on Saturday (28th March) from PLR Systems, an Indo-Israeli joint venture firm. These 2,000 guns are the initial batch of 41,000 guns that are being manufactured at the facility in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India. In August 2024, India had placed an order for 41,000 Negev LMGs of the 7.62x51mm variant. Originally designed and developed by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI), the Negev LMGs are being manufactured at the Indian facility based on technology transfer under the Indian government's ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. “We are excited about the first 2,000 Negevs being delivered, and we plan to deliver 4,000 more units this year. More than 50% of the Negev LMG is produced locally in India, including critical components such as the barrels. Together with our partners at Adani, we are steadily expanding production capacity to keep pace with growing demand,” Shuki Schwartz, CEO of Israel Weapon Industries, told WION’s Sidharth MP. He added that the Indo-Israeli joint venture PLR Systems is well-positioned to meet the full scope of the 41,000-unit order within the planned programme schedule. Weighing about 7.95 kg, the Negev LMG can fire about 650-700 rounds per minute. This weapon can be fired in semi-automatic mode for accurate, fast-controlled fire in close-quarter battle (in confined spaces) and in automatic mode for maximum firepower. They are equipped with Tritium night sights, which are self-illuminating aiming devices that help low-light or nighttime operations. A wide range of optical devices and accessories can be fitted onto the standardised mounting system known as the Picatinny rail. High in the eastern Himalayas, where India's frontier curls against the Chinese border, a decommissioned Bailey Bridge has found an unlikely second life. The Indian Army has opened the Border Brew Café in Zemithang, a remote valley in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district , a glass-lined refreshment stop perched over a rushing river, framed by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on earth. The cafe sits above, a river and large glass panels run along its sides gives visitors unobstructed views of peaks, clouds and the water passing beneath the feet. Old steel girders and military-grade decking now frame panoramas that feel a world away from anything ordinary. But the project's most striking feature is not the view. The café is managed entirely by Monpa women, members of one of Arunachal Pradesh's most ancient tribal communities , giving the initiative a human dimension that sets it apart from conventional infrastructure projects. The Indian Army completed the transformation in just a few days, working under Operation Sadbhavna, meaning "goodwill", a long-running military civic programme focused on the socio-economic development of border communities. Delivering any construction project in terrain where roads are treacherous and winters unforgiving is considered a significant undertaking; completing it in under five weeks has been widely noted. During his recent visit to Gajraj Corps, Lt Gen RC Tiwari, Army Commander of the Eastern Command, commended the forces for conceiving the unique project. For Monpa women who have historically had limited access to formal employment, the café is described as a doorway , into the cash economy, into a growing tourism sector, and into a wider world. Officials say the initiative is intended to showcase the region's culture, traditions and hospitality to visitors making the journey into one of India's most remote corners. Operation Sadbhavna has long concentrated on winning community trust in frontier areas through education, healthcare, infrastructure and vocational training. The Border Brew Café represents perhaps its most visible and imaginative expression yet.

Western Command of the Indian Army warned Pakistan of a “harsher” response than the previous one, highlighting that Operation Sindoor 2.0 is underway. Lieutenant General Rajesh Pushkar, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 2 Corps, stated that Operation Sindoor 2.0 is underway, and the scale of preparation to launch the operation was much larger this time. Whether it is damage of any kind, be it on land, sea, or air, we are always ready to carry it out," he added. In a significant push toward women’s empowerment in border areas, the Indian Army organised its first-ever women’s ice cricket match in the picturesque Gurez Valley of North Kashmir’s Bandipora district. For decades, the Army has been working to uplift communities living near the Line of Control, with special emphasis on empowering women and promoting education in remote rural areas. Continuing this effort, the Army facilitated an exhibition ice cricket match featuring two local girls’ teams as part of the ongoing Gurez Snow Cricket Premier League 2026. The match was held under the banner of the Gurez Snow Cricket Premier League 2026, a men’s ice cricket tournament that has been underway for the past two weeks, with its final scheduled for February 16. Ahead of the grand finale, the Army introduced a special girls’ exhibition match to encourage greater female participation in sports. “I’m incredibly excited and proud that our team won. This victory means so much to us. I also want to encourage all girls to take part in such events, they are wonderful opportunities to showcase your talents and believe in your potential,” said Iram Yaqoob, Player. The two teams, Habba Khatoon Cricket Club and Dard Shina Club, comprised students from Army Goodwill School (AGS), Davar and the local higher secondary school. In a thrilling contest played on a frozen pitch in sub-zero temperatures, Dard Shina Club won the toss and elected to bat first, setting a target of 50 runs. Habba Khatoon Cricket Club fought valiantly in response but were bowled out for 48 runs in 11.1 overs. Dard Shina Club clinched the match by two runs with five balls remaining, drawing loud cheers from spectators who braved the freezing conditions to witness the historic game. The Player of the Match award was presented to Shafiqa for her outstanding bowling performance, in which she claimed six wickets. “I would like to sincerely thank the Indian Army in Gurez for giving girls the opportunity to play a cricket match during the tournament. I am truly happy and grateful for this chance. Such events should be organised regularly for girls as well. The entire experience has been absolutely amazing and unforgettable,” said Sumaira Irshad, Player. The initiative sent a strong message across the region: if men can compete on ice in freezing temperatures, women are equally capable of rising to the challenge. The Army’s move not only promoted sportsmanship but also reinforced its long-standing commitment to empowering women in some of the country’s most remote and strategically sensitive areas. Also read: Moon treasure hunt: India finds the perfect location on the map

Fearless and Lethal: Why the Bhairav Battalion is Indian Army’s ultimate answer to hybrid warfare

Every time we sleep peacefully at night, someone is awake at the border watching over us in the freezing cold or scorching heat. When we go to school without fear, when our parents travel for work, or when we celebrate festivals with joy, this is possible because somewhere a soldier is standing guard. This is why the defence budget matters so much—it is not just numbers on paper but the safety net that allows us to live freely and dream big. As Finance Minister Sitharaman prepares to present the Union Budget for 2026-27 in February, the question is critical: will our armed forces get what they need?Let us be honest and clear about numbers. The last budget allocated ₹6.81 lakh crore for defence, around thirteen per cent of central spending, increased nine and a half per cent from the previous year. But not all goes into new weapons or cutting-edge technology. Like a household budget, if most income covers old debts, rent, and groceries, little remains for future investment. That is what happens with defence spending.Nearly one-fourth goes toward pensions for retired soldiers who absolutely deserve every rupee of support. Significant amounts cover salaries of serving personnel, uniforms, food, fuel, and maintenance of equipment. After essential expenses, little remains for modernising forces—buying fighter jets, submarines, or developing AI for warfare. India spends only one point nine per cent of its GDP on defence. Experts say we need at least two point five percent to match other powers. Our neighbourhood is not the friendliest place. We have tensions with China and Pakistan. The world is unpredictable. Can we afford outdated weapons or delay modern equipment? Recent events like Operation Sindoor show that being prepared is necessary. When a jawan faces enemies with inferior equipment, it is not a fair fight. This is where Atmanirbhar Bharat becomes absolutely crucial. For decades, we bought defence equipment from Russia, France, America, and Israel. But what if international relations change overnight, or they refuse spare parts during a crisis? That is a risk we cannot afford. So India decided to make its own weapons, planes, ships, and technology. Defence production has grown, and exports jumped to over ₹21,000 crore. Indian-made missiles, radars, and patrol boats are now bought globally. The 2025-26 budget showed very promising signs. Capital expenditure increased to ₹1.8 lakh crore, with seventy-five per cent for Indian manufacturers. This means more jobs and economic benefits while our military strengthens. DRDO received nearly ₹27,000 crore. Programs like iDEX encourage innovators to create drones, cybersecurity tools, and AI defence systems. What should we expect from 2026-27? Analysts hope for an increase beyond ₹7.5 lakh crore. The Army needs new tanks, artillery, and armoured vehicles. The Navy wants submarines and another aircraft carrier. The Air Force needs advanced jets, including indigenous AMCA, Rafale aircraft, and drones. All services need artificial intelligence, cyber warfare capabilities, and unmanned systems. However, money alone won't solve everything. Pensions and salaries keep increasing. Global supply chains are disrupted, making imported parts expensive. Building things at home is a practical necessity.Experts suggest smart solutions. One idea is creating a non-lapsable defence fund. Currently, if the military doesn't spend allocated money by March 31st, it returns to the treasury. A non-lapsable fund ensures money stays available. Another suggestion is tax benefits and easier loans to private defence companies, encouraging competition. For ordinary citizens, especially teenagers, a strong defence budget matters deeply. The defence sector is becoming a hub for technology and innovation. Whether interested in aerospace, robotics, or computer science, there is growing space here. Plus, a secure country is prosperous. When businesses feel safe, they invest more.As we wait for February, the government needs courage and vision. Yes, education, healthcare, and infrastructure need funding. But defence cannot be just another expense. It is an investment in our survival. Viksit Bharat by 2047 cannot be achieved without a strong, modern defence force. My opinion is clear: the 2026-27 budget should prioritise three things. First, significantly increase capital spending for modernisation. Second, expand support for Indian defence manufacturers with better incentives and a clear policy. Third, invest heavily in research and future technologies because tomorrow's wars will be fought with AI, drones, and cyber weapons. Defence is not about aggressive posturing. It is about being prepared, being self-reliant, and respecting those who protect us. The budget is coming soon, and whatever number is announced, we should ask: is it enough? Are we truly ready? Because our soldiers are ready to give everything for us. The least we can do is give them the tools to succeed.

Every time we sleep peacefully at night, someone is awake at the border watching over us in the freezing cold or scorching heat. When we go to school without fear, when our parents travel for work, or when we celebrate festivals with joy, this is possible because somewhere a soldier is standing guard. The Indian Army has signed a contract to procure 18 indigenously developed firefighting robots to enhance safety at ammunition depots and other high-risk military installations. The agreement, worth ₹62 crore (£5.7m; $7.2m), was signed on 13 January by the Army's Directorate of Capability Development with Ahmedabad-based start-up Swadeshi Empresa Pvt Ltd.The Fire Fighting Robots (FF BOTs) are unmanned ground vehicles designed to operate in extreme conditions, including intense heat, toxic smoke, explosions and the risk of structural collapse – environments where human firefighters face significant danger. The systems will be deployed at armament and ammunition depots, fuel storage sites and similar sensitive facilities across various cantonments. Induction is scheduled to begin in the first week of April.Equipped with optical and thermal cameras, the remotely operated robots transmit live video feeds to operators, allowing them to identify hotspots and hidden flames even in low-visibility or smoke-filled areas. This capability enables faster initial response and assessment while keeping personnel at a safe distance. The procurement reflects a broader global trend towards robotic systems in firefighting, particularly at industrial plants, oil refineries, nuclear facilities and military sites where fires can escalate rapidly and threaten lives or critical infrastructure. In ammunition depots, a small fire risks triggering secondary explosions and widespread damage, potentially disrupting logistics and operational readiness. The FF BOT was originally developed under the Ministry of Defence's Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative for the Indian Navy. The Army has become the first service to acquire it by using provisions that allow one branch to procure iDEX products already tested and cleared by another, following a Single Stage Composite Trial. This cross-service approach avoids duplicating development efforts and accelerates the adoption of proven indigenous technologies, aligning with India's Make in India programme and efforts to support defence start-ups.The contract includes a two-year warranty, five years of comprehensive maintenance and on-site support, ensuring long-term integration into emergency response plans. Officials emphasise that the robots are intended to support, rather than replace, human firefighters. By sending unmanned systems into the most hazardous zones first, the Army aims to reduce risks to soldiers while safeguarding vital assets. The FF BOT previously demonstrated its effectiveness in civilian operations, including at a major fire at the Visakhapatnam refinery, highlighting potential applications beyond the military, such as at power stations, airports and disaster sites. It was showcased at Army House during Vijay Diwas celebrations in December.

Army chief General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday (Jan 13) issued a clear warning to Pakistan during the annual press briefing ahead of the Army Day on January 15. He stated that the operation was conceptualised and executed with precision and lasted 88 hours, following an initiation of 22 minutes, during which seven out of nine terror targets were successfully destroyed. He added that the Op Sindoor has reset strategic assumptions by striking deep into Pakistan, dismantling terror infrastructure and puncturing the nation’s nuclear rhetoric.“Following the Pahalgam terror attack, a clear decision to respond decisively was taken at the highest level. Op Sindoor was conceptualised and executed with precision. Through 22 minutes of initiation on 7th May and an orchestration that lasted 88 hours up to 10th May, the operation reset strategic assumptions by striking deep, dismantling terror infrastructure, and puncturing the long-standing nuclear rhetoric,” General Dwiwedi said.He further stated that the operation remains ongoing, warning Pakistan that “any future misadventure” will attract retaliation“The army successfully destroyed seven out of the nine targets and thereafter played a pivotal role in ensuring a calibrated response to Pak actions. As you may be aware, Operation Sindoor remains ongoing. Any future misadventure will be resolutely responded to,” the Army chief said.He further stated, “Here, I must acknowledge the proactive roles of all stakeholders. At the national level, including CAPFs, int agencies, civic bodies, state administration and other ministries, whether it’s MHA, Railways, and many more. Operation Sindoor was the best example of tri-services synergy under clear-cut political directive and full freedom to act or respond.”The army chief highlighted the significant reduction in terror activities in Jammu and Kashmir since May 10, noting 31 terrorists were killed in the year 2025. He also stated that the active number of local terrorists is now in single digits in the region, and only two recruitments took place in the year.“In J&K, since 10th May, the situation along the western front in J&K remains sensitive but firmly under control. In 2025, 31 terrorists were eliminated, of which 65% were Pakistan origin, including the three perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack neutralised in Operation Mahadev. Active terrorist local terrorists are now in single digits. Terrorist recruitment is almost non-existent, with only two in 2025,” he said. “Clear indicators of positive change in J&K include robust development activity, revival of tourism and Shree Amarnath Yatra, which saw more than 4 lakh pilgrims, exceeding the five-year average. The theme of terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape.”General Dwivedi also said, “As regards the north east, neutral, transparent and decisive action of the security forces, along with many proactive government initiaties have led to a marked improvement in the situation in Manipur in 2025.”

The Indian Army chief stated that the operation remains ongoing, warning Pakistan that “any future misadventure” will attract retaliation.

He added that the Op Sindoor has reset strategic assumptions by striking deep into Pakistan, dismantling terror infrastructure and puncturing the nation’s nuclear rhetoric. “Following the Pahalgam terror attack, a clear decision to respond decisively was taken at the highest level. Op Sindoor was conceptualised and executed with precision. Through 22 minutes of initiation on 7th May and an orchestration that lasted 88 hours up to 10th May, the operation reset strategic assumptions by striking deep, dismantling terror infrastructure, and puncturing the long-standing nuclear rhetoric,” General Dwiwedi said. He further stated that the operation remains ongoing, warning Pakistan that “any future misadventure” will attract retaliation “The army successfully destroyed seven out of the nine targets and thereafter played a pivotal role in ensuring a calibrated response to Pak actions. As you may be aware, Operation Sindoor remains ongoing. Any future misadventure will be resolutely responded to,” the Army chief said. He further stated, “Here, I must acknowledge the proactive roles of all stakeholders. ‘Operation Sindoor remains ongoing’: Indian Army chief warns Pak against ‘any future misadventure’

Modern warfare is going through a major transformation, shifting away from big tank battles and heavy artillery fire toward a future driven by computers, software, and autonomous drones. In this fast-changing environment, the Indian Army is not just watching the change—it is taking the lead. Through a massive strategic initiative known as Project Shaktibaan, the Indian Army is raising 15 to 20 specialised drone regiments that promise to transform the nation's defence capabilities. Under the leadership of General Upendra Dwivedi, these units signify a clear departure from traditional "brute force" tactics, ushering in an era where digital precision and smart machines do the heavy lifting, ensuring India remains secure against 21st-century threats.
From Artillery Shells to Flying Machines
For many Indians, the idea of a "regiment" usually brings to mind rows of soldiers or heavy cannons. A Shaktibaan regiment, however, is an entirely different beast. Operating under the Regiment of Artillery, these units are essentially high-tech drone formations, where flying machines replace traditional shells. This evolution builds on an earlier system known as the Divyastra Battery—a digital upgrade for traditional artillery that used drones and computers to calculate distances and aim guns with precision. While Divyastra proved drones could act as powerful assistants, Shaktibaan elevates them to the main strike role. This transition marks a major leap in safety and efficiency, allowing the military to engage targets from 5 km to nearly 500 km without putting a single soldier in direct danger. In military terms, it is like upgrading from a bicycle to a supersonic jet—faster, smarter, and far more precise. By removing soldiers from the point of contact, India protects its most valuable asset while expanding its strike reach exponentially. Recent global conflicts have shown how even the most expensive tanks and air defence systems can be neutralised by cheap, intelligent drones. India has absorbed these lessons, ensuring its defence posture keeps pace with modern combat realities.
The Three Pillars of Shaktibaan
The tactical heart of Shaktibaan lies in its diverse arsenal of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), each designed for specific battlefield roles.
Swarm Drones: The Unstoppable Force
First among them are swarm drones, which operate on collective intelligence. Much like a flock of birds, dozens of drones communicate in real time, moving as a single, coordinated unit. Even if several drones are shot down, the rest continue the mission—overwhelming enemy defences through numbers and coordination. These swarms can carry out simultaneous surveillance and attack missions, offering battlefield visibility and precision that represent a new benchmark in modern warfare. More importantly, their distributed intelligence makes them nearly impossible to stop with traditional air defences, taking down one or even ten drones barely affects the swarm's effectiveness.
Loitering Munitions: The Patient Hunter
Complementing the swarms are loitering munitions, commonly known as kamikaze or suicide drones. Unlike traditional missiles fired at fixed coordinates, loitering munitions can hover over an area for hours, sending live video feeds until a high-value target reveals itself. Once identified, the drone dives in with surgical accuracy. This capability allows the Army to conduct highly precise strikes, minimising collateral damage and protecting civilian lives and infrastructure. The patience of these weapons—waiting for the perfect moment rather than striking blindly—represents a fundamental shift in how precision warfare operates.
Long-Range Drones: Bridging the Gap
Shaktibaan also introduces long-range drones that bridge a critical gap in India's strike capability. Earlier, commanders had to choose between short-range systems like Pinaka and strategic missiles such as BrahMos—essentially deciding between limited reach or potential escalation. Long-range drones provide a middle path—capable of deep surveillance and targeted strikes without escalating every engagement into a missile exchange. They give commanders flexibility, allowing pressure to be applied without triggering full-scale conflict. This graduated response capability is invaluable in an era where conflicts often simmer below the threshold of all-out war.
Self-Reliance Takes Flight
The success of Project Shaktibaan is also a major win for India's self-reliance in defence. Instead of depending on foreign suppliers, the Indian Army is working with domestic players such as Solar Defence, Adani Defence, and RapheM. With an investment of about ₹2,000 crore for the initial procurement of loitering munitions and launch systems, the Make in India vision is becoming an operational reality. This approach ensures India can scale, modify, and sustain its drone capabilities without being dependent on foreign governments during crises. It also keeps critical defence technology and manufacturing expertise within the country, building a robust industrial base for future innovations.
The Human Element
Supporting this technological leap is an equally massive human transformation. The Army is training over 100,000 drone operators, ensuring the human brain behind the machine is as sharp as the technology itself. New specialised units—such as Ashmi platoons for close infantry support and Bhairav commandos, elite forces designed for drone-centric operations—are being integrated into the Army's core structure. This holistic transformation ensures that from the high Himalayas to desert frontiers, the Indian Army remains agile, technology-driven, and combat-ready.
The Road Ahead
With the first Shaktibaan regiments already operational and deliveries of new systems expected within the next two years, India's drone transformation is moving from blueprint to battlefield reality. The remaining regiments will be raised in phases, creating a force structure designed specifically for 21st-century conflicts. With Project Shaktibaan, India is not merely adapting to the future of warfare—it is actively shaping it, building a smarter, safer, and stronger nation for its people. As drone technology continues to evolve and adversaries develop their own unmanned capabilities, Shaktibaan ensures India will meet these challenges not as a follower, but as a leader.

Under the leadership of General Upendra Dwivedi, these units signify a clear departure from traditional "brute force" tactics, ushering in an era where digital precision and smart machines do the heavy lifting, ensuring India remains secure against 21st-century threats.
