Five years after being swept out of power by the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRCP, N Chandrababu Naidu, the Telugu Desam Party supremowho leads the NDA alliance in Andhra Pradesh, has pulled off a landslide victory along with the BJP and Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena Party in the south Indian state’s assembly elections.
Wresting power from the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), the TDP has won 134 seats in the assembly, while the Jana Sena Party has 21 seats and the BJP 8, taking the total alliance tally to 163, leaving the YSRCP behind with just 12 seats in Andhra Pradesh.
Chandrababu Naidu is set to be sworn in as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth time. Now, eight months after receiving bail in the Skill Development Corporation Scam, the 74-year-old is back on top and could potentially play the kingmaker in the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 too.
Who is Chandrababu Naidu?
Chandrababu Naidu has previously served three terms as the chief minister of the south-Indian state, two in the era of united Andhra Pradesh- from 1995 to 2004, and one in 2014 after Telangana was carved out of the state.

He began his over four-decade-long political career as the local youth president of the Congress during the Emergency imposed by then prime minister Indira Gandhi and won a seat in the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly in 1978.
After he wed the daughter of film superstar NT Rama Rao – who founded the TDP and was chief minister of Andhra Pradesh three times, Naidu abandoned the Congress for TDP and built great influence in the party.
In 1995, Naidu rebelled against his father-in-law over the growing influence of NTR’s second wife Lakshmi Parvathi. He was then unanimously chosen as the TDP chief and took over as the chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh.
During this period, Naidu emerged as the chief architect of modern Hyderabad, playing a key role in developing the hi-tech city and turning it into a major IT hub.
However, before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, he broke away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to join the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), but got defeated by the YSRCP, leaving Naidu politically marginalised.

The lowest point in his career came when he was arrested in 2023 under the Skill Development Corporation Scam case by the YSRCP government. In its wake, Naidu joined the NDA alliance after much struggle as he had left both Modi and Amit Shah incensed prior to the 2019 polls.
Now, with the NDA alliance winning a slender majority at the Centre, political analysts have hinted at what would happen if Chandrababu Naidu and Nitish Kumar, both belonging to the same school of politics, switch loyalties to the INDIA bloc.
The election results have presented an opportunity for Chandrababu Naidu to play kingmaker, as he did as United Front Convenor, considering his political opportunist image.
