As India's election results were announced Tuesday (June 4), the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended up receiving a huge setback as it lost a 10-year majority in the lower house of the Indian Parliament.
Amongst the top gainers in Lok Sabha election results 2024 are several opposition leaders as the INDIA bloc managed to win over 225 seats. Here are some of the faces that emerged as top gainers on Tuesday.
Naidu has emerged as the kingmaker in the Lok Sabha elections, emerging as a crucial ally for NDA struggling to breach the 300 mark. His Telugu Desam Party (TDP) won 16 seats in Andhra Pradesh. In assembly elections too, his party dominated its rivals, winning 135 seats and the chief ministerial chair too.
The battle of prestige was being fought on Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli seat, where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was in the fray. And Gandhi did emerge victorious from here with a handsome margin of 400,000 votes.
UP ka ladka (The boy from UP) Akhilesh Yadav also bagged big in these Lok Sabha elections. His Samajwadi Party (SP) won 37 seats. It was only because of his party's impressive performance that the BJP was not able to cross the majority mark of 272 nationally.
Indian politician infamous for switching alliances, JDU's Nitish Kumar is now another kingmaker of Indian politics. He joined the NDA barely five months ago and now the stability of Modi's third term at theCentre depends on how he goes about his business in the coming days. His JDU has won 15 seats in Bihar, shoring up NDA's 295 tally.
The former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh and a top leader of BJP, Shivraj Singh Chauhan emerged as one of the biggest gainers of these elections, thrashing Congress's Pratap Bhanu Sharma in Vidisha with a massive margin of 820,000 votes.
KL Sharma of Congress was fighting another battle of prestige for the grand old party from Amethi seat, a bastion of Congress but clinched by BJP's Smriti Irani in 2019. The Congress on Tuesday won it back, with KL Sharma giving Irani a run for her money.
