Prime Minister Narendra Modi today announced his plan of making India tuberculosis-free by 2025. The Prime Minister was speaking while inaugurating the Delhi End TB Summit at Vigyan Bhawan.

PM Modi noted that the pace at which the previous plans to eradicate TB in the nation were moving forward, it would have taken another 40 years to achieve the goals.

"Today I'm confident that in the duration of one year we'll be able to achieve 90% immunisation," he shared.

The Prime Minister admitted that the country has not been successful in "curbing tuberculosis" and that the policymakers will need to change the approach.

"We have not been successful in curbing tuberculosis yet. I believe that if something doesn't yield result even after 10-15 years then we need to change our approach. The situation needs to be analysed," he further added.

According to reports, India loses over 220,000 people every year to tuberculosis. India is the highest TB burden country according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2011 data.
