'Seek to play a...': PM Modi's message as he leaves for two-day Russia visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday morning (Jul 8)embarked on an official visit to Russia to meet President Vladimir Putin as well as attend the 22nd India-Russia annual summit.
In his departing note, PM Modi emphasised that India seeks to play a supportive role for a peaceful and stable region.
“I look forward to reviewing all aspects of bilateral cooperation with my friend President Vladimir Putin and sharing perspectives on various regional and global issues. We seek to play a supportive role for a peaceful and stable region,” an official statement released by the PM on his website stated.
"The Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia has advanced over the past ten years, including in the areas of energy, security, trade, investment, health, education, culture, tourism and people-to-people exchanges."

This will be PM Modi's first visit to Russia since theRussia-Ukraine conflict started in 2022. Additionally, it's his first bilateral visit in his third stint as the prime minister of India.
Modi's last official trip to Russia came in 2019 when he visited theEastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok. To this day, he remains the only Indian PM to travel to Russia's Far East region where Moscow has been attempting to drum up investments.
PM Modi's visit is crucial for Putin as it comes at the same time as whenleaders of the 32 nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) will be meeting in Washington DC from July 9-11 to celebrate 75 years of the anti-Russia military alliance.
The Western world has been attempting to make Putin a pariah since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war but New Delhi has steadfastly stood in its corner while batting for a peaceful resolution to the problem.

Modi's Austria trip
Following his Russia trip, PM Modi will embark on another historic visit to Austria where he will become the first Indian PM to visit the European nation in more than 40 years.
"This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister in over 40 years," said PM Modi.
"Together with the Austrian Chancellor, I look forward to exchanging views with business leaders from both sides to explore mutually beneficial trade and investment opportunities."
PM Modi will also interact with the diaspora in the country, whom he praised for their professionalism and conduct.
