Punjab: Water in Buddha Nulla stream turns black due to pollution

Water in Ludhiana's Buddha Nulla, also known as Buddha Nala, has turned black due to industrial and chemical waste drained into the stream.
Several deaths have been reported in surrounding villages in the past four years. Cases of deaths reported were triggered due to hepatitis among other diseases.
Buddha Nulla is a seasonal water stream that drains into Sutlej river after passing through Ludhiana, Punjab. It runs through the Malwa region of Punjab.
Over the years, the stream has turned into an open drain with most of the industrial and chemical waste from Ludhiana district dumped into it.
Water from Buddha Nullah enters various canals and affects the population of the nearby areas that use it for irrigation purposes.

Despite scores of efforts, the stream has continued to get filthier over the years.
Ludhiana district administration imposed article 144 around the nullah in the year 2009. People were banned from littering and polluting the nullah. The same year, Punjab government allotted Rs 500 million for cleaning the nullah. Illegal encroachments around the stream were removed in August 2009.
