Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital who was recently arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was slapped by a bystander on Tuesday (Sep 3) as he was leaving the Alipore court in India'sKolkata.

Ghosh along with his additional security guard, Afsar Ali, and two others, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra were arrested by the CBI on Monday (Sep 2). The four face allegations related to corruption at the medical institution.

He has beensent to 8-day police custody.The next hearing of the case will be on September 10.

Sandip Ghosh slapped

On Tuesday, theaccused was presented before the Alipore court in Kolkata. According to an ABP report, the courtroom scene quickly descended into chaos as Ghosh entered. A large crowd, including lawyers, surrounded him, chanting slogans of "chor, chor" (thief, thief).

The situation escalated further when, as Ghosh was leaving the court, the crowd became hostile, attacking him in the process. The CBI and CISF personnel struggled to get the accused to the car.

Sandip Ghosh's arrest

The arrests followed nearly 150 hours of intense interrogation. Alongside Sandip Ghosh, his additional bodyguard Afsar Ali, and two medicine suppliers, Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra, were taken into custody. Singha and Hazra are reportedly related to Ghosh.

While the three others have applied for bail, Ghosh has reportedly opted against seeking bail.

In response to the ongoing investigation, the West Bengal Health Department issued a suspension order for Ghosh on Tuesday. He was also removed from the West Bengal Medical Council and its associated panels, including the ethics committee.

The CBI has charged Ghosh and three Kolkata-based private entities—Ma Tara Traders, Eshan Cafe, and Khama Louha—with criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
