A security guard arrested for allegedly raping a woman tenant on the terrace of a housing society in Ahmedabad was shot in the leg while reportedly trying to escape from police custody, police said on Monday (August 10). Officials confirmed that the act was done by the security guard just four days after joining duty, exposing negligence of the hiring agency, which prima facie failed to verify the accused's background. Officials said that a police constable also suffered a bullet injury during the incident, which occurred late Sunday (August 9, 2026) night. Joint Commissioner of Police (Sector-1) Neeraj Badgujar said the accused identified as Dharam Singh, originally hailing from Hardoi district in Uttar Pradesh, reportedly blocked the woman before sexually assaulting her and then locked her on the terrace before fleeing. He added that the incident took place late Saturday night when the victim went to the terrace of the building for a walk and added that CCTV footage showed that the guard went to the terrace using the elevator and stairs. "Singh had started working as a security guard in the society just four days ago," Badgujar added. He also said the accused attempted to evade arrest by switching off his mobile phone. Ten teams, comprising personnel from the police, the local crime branch, and the crime branch, examined CCTV footage from the area and carried out a search operation, which led to Singh's arrest around 7-8 am near the Hebatpur area. Badgujar stated that the accused Dharam Singh had previously worked as a security guard with various companies in Ahmedabad before taking up a position at the housing society in the Anandnagar area. He noted that the security agency that had hired Singh appeared, on the face of it, to have failed to verify his background, provide him with proper training, or collect basic personal details. "We will take strict action against the security agency as well," Badgujar said. Singh has been booked on rape charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the police officer said, adding that a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team visited the crime scene, while medical examinations of both the survivor and the accused are underway. Badgujar further said that the police are also proceeding with DNA-related forensic examination as part of the investigation.

RG Kar rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy claims he was 'framed' by ex-Kolkata police commissioner Vineet Goyal

MMA fighter Conor McGregor has landed in huge trouble. The Irish mixed martial arts fighter allegedly raped a woman in a Dublin hotel, the city’s high court has been informed. The victim, named Nikita Ní Laimhín is claiming civil damages against superstar McGregor and another man, alleging she was sexually assaulted in Dec 2018.

The court, however, heard on Tuesday (Nov 5), McGregor’s lawyers who claim that Nikita is simply attempting extortion. The fighter was also in court to hear Justice Alexander Owens tell the jury it is alleged Nikita was sexually assaulted by McGregor and James Lawrence on Dec 9. The judge further claimed it was alleged that the ones in question had "in effect raped her".

The court was told McGregor collected Nikita, a hairdresser in Dublin, and her friend after a Christmas party on Dec 8.

John Gordon SC, for Nikita, stated that McGregor knew his client for long. She was out with her friends on the night of the alleged incident when she only contacted him, and headed to another party after being picked by McGregor.

It is reported that McGregor had a bag of cocaine, which was shared between him, Nikita and her friend before the former's driver took them to Lawrence's house, who joined them in the ride. Both the ladies had already been drinking and had cocaine. Notably, the court also heard that Nikita suffered from depression and was on antidepressants.

Upon reaching a penthouse suite in the Beacon hotel in Dublin, they continued to have a good time and were drinking and laughing before all hell broke loose.

McGregor allegedly went into a bedroom and asked Nikita to come along. The court was informed that the Irish fighter "came on to her", however, Nikita did not want to have sexual intercourse with him as she was on her period.

Gordon further told the court, "She will tell you that she was nervous, that she tried to push him off her but she was completely unable to do so. You will see pictures of her hands and wrists, which are black and blue. You will see that her left breast has a bloodied scratch. The scratch is there because she was wearing a watch and had her hands up to protect herself. She was pressed down on and the watch scarred her breast.

"Mr McGregor then flips her over and puts her arm in a lock and draws her up by the neck. She can’t breathe. And he does it again. By the third time he does it, she gives up. She can’t resist this any more. In the course of this, he says: "‘Now you know what it was like to be in the Octagon when I went down three times.’ She was at this point completely terrified. She subjected herself to what was about to happen, which was a violent and vicious assault."

Later, it was alleged that Nikita also had sex with Lawrence. However, Gordon revealed that his client had no memory of such an event taking place. Nikita then went to her mother's house, who in turn, called 999.

Gordon said, "In the face of this, Mr McGregor will tell you that this was a consensual encounter, that they were just having fun and a bit of rough sex. That’s his answer. What did I say about common sense? Don’t be fooled into leaving it behind in this [court] room. What he is saying is that she gave him a licence to carry out what has to have been a brutal assault on her body."

In addition, the court also heard from Dr Daniel Keane, a gynaecologist and a forensic examiner in sexual assault cases. In his report, the doctor claimed that Nikita came to him and told that the alleged attacker grabbed her by the neck and stopped her from breathing. As per him, she claimed of being unable to fight back and thought she was going to die.

The defence, on the other hand, pointed out that Nikita had several opportunities to complain about her treatment, however, she chose not to. Additionally, it claimed that she was engaged in an attempt at extortion.

The hearing will continue and action is expected to last around two weeks.

Rape Cases Trigger Protests In West Bengal

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, were remanded in CBI custody till September 17 by a court in Sealdah on Sunday (Sep 15).

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) alleged in court that there "could be a bigger conspiracy" and that both Ghosh and Mondal played "vital roles" in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor at RG Kar.

A nexus to hide the crime

The CBI seeking three-day custody of the two men alleged that Ghosh and Mondal tried to "downplay" the horrific incident as well as "shield" the heinous crime and that the agency wanted to interrogate them "face-to-face".

A lawyer for CBI said that the agency had obtained call detail records (CDR) of the two on the night of the incident and probe suggested a possible nexus between the two.

"We want to confront both of them," said the CBI lawyer.

The CBI alleged that Mondal took an "unusually long time to arrive at the scene of the crime," even though it was "only a five-minute drive." According to the investigative agency, the Tala police station in-charge was "informed about the incident at 10.03 am but he reached the spot at 11 am."

Former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and Tala police station in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, were remanded in CBI custody till September 17 by a court in Sealdah on Sunday (Sep 15).

A nexus to hide the crime The CBI seeking three-day custody of the two men alleged that Ghosh and Mondal tried to "downplay" the horrific incident as well as "shield" the heinous crime and that the agency wanted to interrogate them "face-to-face". A lawyer for CBI said that the agency had obtained call detail records (CDR) of the two on the night of the incident and probe suggested a possible nexus between the two. "We want to confront both of them," said the CBI lawyer. Furthermore, the lawyer pointed out a "14-hour delay in registering an FIR," and also raised questions regarding the filing of a "general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious". India recently witnessed a tragedy of monstrous proportions, as a doctor trainee was found brutally raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital where she worked to save lives.

On August 9, the post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal.

The 31-year-old medic was subjected to brutal torture before her death. Unfortunately, before the police reached the scene, pictures of her abused body were clicked and circulated.

The tragic incident has sparked a nationwide wave of protests and strikes by doctors and citizens, who have taken to the streets to express their outrage at the handling of the case and the unsafe conditions in which the victim had to work.

The 31-year-old doctor, as per her father, fought her way into one of India's highly competitive medical colleges and represented a beacon of hope for her family and community. Her parents, despite their modest means, supported her dream, with her father, a tailor, working tirelessly to finance her education. They eventually bought her a car to ease the tiring commute between their home and the hospital after her long shifts.

"At first, she told me to wait. She said we couldn't manage the EMIs [monthly instalments] and she didn't want to overburden us. But then she found the bus ride so tiring after a long shift that she agreed to the car."

The father and his wife took comfort in the belief that their daughter was safe at the hospital, a place they assumed was secure.

"Like all parents, we worried about her safety, but only while she was travelling. The moment she reached the hospital, we relaxed. She was safe. It’s like when we used to drop her off at school—once she was inside the gate, you feel she is safe."

Public outrage has been amplified by the fact that the attack occurred in the very hospital where she worked—a place her family trusted to be safe.

The victim's mother reportedly told a neighbour, "She was my only child. We worked hard to make her a doctor … I will never be happy again."
