Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath was quoted as saying by Indian Express, “The accused is a (drug) addict and does not know the woman. On the day of the incident, he saw the woman going alone. As per our information, he stopped the woman, who fought back fiercely. She was, however, overpowered and… strangled&nbsp;to death. He also sexually assaulted her. After the murder, he took the woman’s belongings and escaped.”

Apart from five doctors at the hospital, the CBI also interrogated the hospital's former medical superintendent-cum-vice-principal (MSVP), the principal and the head of the chest department, where the victim's body was found.

The agency has also asked for details of Civic Volunteer Sanjay Roy's call detail record and mobile tower location. Roy has been arrested on suspicion of the murder.

Calcutta High Court orders CBI probe into brutal rape and murder of trainee doctor in West Bengal

Bruce Lehrmann has been ordered to stand trial on charges of rape. The 29-year-old is accused of committing two counts of rape in Toowoomba, located west of Brisbane, in October 2021.

Magistrate Mark Howden, found sufficient grounds to commit Lehrmann to trial on Thursday (July 4), refusing his argument that he had no case to answer.

“Based on the available evidence, I believe there is enough to convince a jury that the defendant is guilty, assuming they receive proper instructions,” Howden said.

The Toowoomba district court will hear the trial at a date yet to be set.

Prior to Howden’s ruling, a crowded courtroom was presented with details that were mutually agreed upon by Lehrmann’s barrister, Andrew Hoare KC, and the prosecutor, Nicole Friedewald, concerning the events of the night and the morning after&nbsp;October 9, 2021.

Lehrmann and the complainant, who cannot legally be named, agreed to meet at a strip club after both had been drinking alcohol and the complainant had taken cocaine.&nbsp;

They both proceeded to use cocaine together, and in the early hours of the morning, they took a taxi to a residence in Toowoomba where Lehrmann's schoolmate lived. There, they engaged in consensual sexual activity.

However, the complainant claims she woke up to see Lehrmann on top&nbsp;penetrating her without a condom, despite her having insisted upon contraception during their earlier consensual encounter.

She also alleged she pulled her body away and told him to ‘stop’ but Lehrmann instead climbed back on top of her saying, “it’s OK, it’s OK,” continuing the unwanted sex.

Later, she would tell the police, "I did not consent to him penetrating me. I wasn't laying there enthusiastically. I was so in my head, I was in shock."

The complainant went to police 20 days later.

The court was informed that she made her formal complaint after seeing news coverage of the allegations by Brittany Higgins that Lehrmann raped her in parliament house.

Prosecutor Nicole Friedewald submitted that Lehrmann had done nothing to ascertain if the complainant was consenting.

"He was consoling her throughout that act, saying 'it's okay, it's okay'," Friedewald told the court.

Lehrmann's defence further submitted that she had not mentioned the alleged rapes at two doctor appointments, where she discussed an unrelated WorkCover claim and later had a test for sexually transmitted diseases.

Defence lawyer Hoare said, there was an absence of any complaint about sexual assault and that it was only after a conversation with a female friend who suggested sexual assault, that a police complaint was made.

He said "prior to speaking to the police" the complainant had met a civil lawyer and a criminal lawyer.

Magistrate Mark Howden said, that after considering all these factors, he believed there was enough evidence to establish a prima facie case against Lehrmann. He also noted that the reliability of the complainant's evidence would be determined by a fact finder, whether it be a judge sitting alone or a jury.

Howden formally charged Lehrmann with two counts of rape and asked if he had anything he wished to say in relation to the two charges.

The convicts included officials from the forest, police as well as revenue departments of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

Justice P Velmurugan, on Friday, also ordered the government to provide an immediate compensation of Rs 10 lakh each to all the 18 women who were victims of sexual assault during the infamous incident.

He further directed the government to recover 50 per cent of the amount from the accused who committed the offence.

Dismissing appeals from the accused, Justice Velmurugan said, "In view of the above discussion and for the foregoing reasons, this court finds all the accused have committed the charged offences. There are no merits in these appeals. All the criminal appeals stand dismissed as devoid of merits. The trial court is directed to secure the custody of the accused to serve the remaining period of sentence, if any". &nbsp;

In the year 2011, a lower court in Dharmapuri had convicted and sentenced 215 men to prison terms ranging from 1 to 10 years.&nbsp;

“Here, despite the fact trial testimony has been underway for only two days, the proceedings are already replete with numerous explains of the defendant’s unfair treatment by the court, most of which has been witnessed by the Jury,” the letter read.

The statement read, "The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket decided to suspend national player Danushka Gunathilaka from all forms of cricket with immediate effect and will not consider him for any selections after being informed that Mr. Gunathilaka was arrested and charged with sexual assault of a woman in Australia."

Furthermore, Sri Lanka Cricket will take the necessary steps to carry out an inquiry into the alleged offense promptly, and, upon conclusion of the aforementioned court case in Australia, steps will be taken to penalize the said player if found guilty. Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to emphasize that it adopts a “zero tolerance” policy for any such conduct by a player and will provide all the required support to the Australian law enforcement authorities to carry out an impartial inquiry into the incident."

After spending hours at two Canberra bars, Higgins claimed to be the most drunk she had ever been, the jury was informed. The two then shared a cab to Parliament House.

As the jurors watched CCTV footage of her and Lehrmann entering the premises, she was sobbing inside the courtroom.

In a police interview that was shown to the jury, Higgins said that she had slept off in Minister Reynolds' office before waking up to find Lehrmann having sex with her.

She admitted to crying to the cops. She said, "I told him no; I told him to stop."

Higgins could not have given consent to intercourse since she was "unconscious," according to the prosecution.

The jury heard that she initially reported the alleged rape to authorities in the days that followed, but she later withheld filing a formal complaint out of fear of losing her work.

Although Lehrmann declined to testify, he stated that what was alleged "just didn't happen" in a police interview that was played to the court.

Parts of Higgins' testimony, according to his attorney Steven Whybrow, were "completely and absolutely inconsistent."

Higgins arrived in court to see the case's demise but fled before the judge made her decision.

When they were informed that they were being discharged, a few jury members were very angry.

They informed the court on Tuesday that they had so far been unable to come to a unanimous decision, but the judge promptly ordered them back to continue discussing.

"Everyone is disappointed at what happened but it would be inappropriate and irresponsible to say anything at this stage," Lehrmann's lawyer told media outside the court.

The issue of whether Lehrmann should stand trial again has not yet been debated by the parties, but Justice McCallum scheduled a date in February just in case.

Alice Sebold, the bestselling author of the memoir “Lucky” and the novel “The Lovely Bones,” apologized publicly Tuesday to a man who was wrongly convicted of raping her in 1982 after she had identified him in court as her attacker.

The apology came eight days after the conviction of the man, Anthony Broadwater, was vacated by a state court judge in Syracuse, New York, who concluded, in consultation with the local district attorney and Broadwater’s lawyers, that the case against him was deeply flawed.

“I am sorry most of all for the fact that the life you could have led was unjustly robbed from you,” she wrote. “And I know that no apology can change what happened to you and never will. It has taken me these past eight days to comprehend how this could have happened.”

Sebold’s statement was reported earlier by The Associated Press. Her publisher, Scribner, said she was not available for additional comment.

Scribner said last week that it had no plans to update the memoir’s text based on Broadwater’s exoneration. But on Tuesday, the company said it would cease distribution of “Lucky” while it and Sebold “consider how the work might be revised.”

Broadwater, in an interview with The New York Times on Tuesday, said he was “relieved and grateful” for Sebold’s apology.

In “Lucky,” which was published in 1999, she gives a searing account of the assault and of the trauma she subsequently endured. She also writes in detail about the trial and about how she became convinced she had recognized Broadwater, whom she referred to with a pseudonym in the book, as her attacker after passing him on the street months after the rape.

The memoir chronicles mishaps in the case, including the fact that a composite sketch of her attacker, based on her description, did not resemble him. The book also describes Sebold’s fear that the prosecution might be derailed after she identified a different man, not Broadwater, in a police lineup.

Later, she identified Broadwater as her attacker in court. After a brief trial, he was convicted of first-degree rape and five other charges.

“Lucky” started Sebold’s career and paved the way for her breakout novel, “The Lovely Bones,” which also centers on sexual assault. It has sold millions of copies and was made into a feature film.

Although Sebold gave Broadwater the fictitious name Gregory Madison in the memoir, he said he had been forced to suffer the stigma of being branded a sex offender even after being released from prison.

He had always insisted he was innocent and was denied parole several times for refusing to acknowledge guilt. He took two polygraph tests, decades apart, with experts who determined that his account was truthful.

He tried repeatedly over the years to hire lawyers to help prove his innocence. Those efforts were unsuccessful until recently, when a planned film adaptation of “Lucky” helped raise new questions about the case.

Timothy Mucciante, who was working as executive producer on the film version, said in an interview with the Times that he had started to doubt Sebold’s account after reading the memoir and the script earlier this year.

Mucciante said he had been struck by how little evidence was presented at Broadwater’s trial. He said he had been fired from the production after raising questions about the story. (The feature film was dropped after losing its financing, Variety reported.)

“It seemed like Anthony was wronged,” Mucciante told the Times.

Mucciante hired a private investigator, Dan Myers, who had spent 20 years with the sheriff’s office in Onondaga County, New York, before retiring as a detective in 2020. After finding and interviewing Broadwater, Myers became convinced he had been falsely accused.

Myers, who shares office space with a law firm, recommended that Broadwater hire one of the lawyers there, J. David Hammond. Hammond reviewed the investigation and agreed that there was a strong argument for setting the conviction aside.

In their motion to vacate the conviction, Hammond and a second lawyer, Melissa K. Swartz, argued that the case rested entirely on two flawed elements: Sebold’s courtroom identification of Broadwater and a now-discredited method of microscopic hair analysis.

Mucciante’s production company, Red Badge Films, is now working on a documentary about the case, “Unlucky,” with a second production company, Red Hawk Films. Broadwater and those who helped vacate the conviction are also participating.

In a recommendation filed Wednesday, magistrate judge Daniel Albregts recommended that Ronaldo’s motion to terminate the case be granted.

Albregts, whose recommendation will be reviewed by a separate judge who is actually hearing the case, blamed Mayorga’s lawyers for the move, saying they had based their case on leaked communications between Ronaldo and his legal team, which were privileged.

A&nbsp;British&nbsp;teenager accused of faking a gang&nbsp;rape&nbsp;allegation was given a&nbsp;suspended&nbsp;sentence by a court in&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/israels-pm-benjamin-netanyahu-in-apparent-stumble-calls-israel-a-nuclear-power-272310">Cyprus</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday in a case that prompted a rare rebuke from Britain and protests from activists who say she did not get a fair&nbsp;trial.

The 19-year-old says she was coerced by police into dropping a complaint that she was&nbsp;raped by a group of Israeli youths in the holiday resort of Ayia Napa in July. She was convicted on December&nbsp;30 of public mischief over the withdrawn&nbsp;rape&nbsp;report.

Dressed in black and standing silently before the judge in a packed courtroom, the woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was sentenced to four months in&nbsp;jail,&nbsp;suspended&nbsp;for three years.

Raising his voice over chants from supporters of the woman outside, Judge Michalis Papathanasiou said the sentence took into account her age, clean criminal record and remorse, and that he was giving her a "second chance".

"All mitigating factors were taken into account but it does not negate the seriousness of the offense," Papathanasiou said, noting that 12 individuals had been briefly detained on the basis of her accusation.

Police ordered window blinds in the courtroom to be pulled down to block the sight of about 150 protesters who shouted slogans like "Blaming the victim is the second&nbsp;rape" and "Cyprus&nbsp;justice, shame on you".

"We are here to raise social awareness of&nbsp;rape. There is no justice here," said Dana Salmon, one of almost 60 activists from Israel who had flown in to support the woman.

Lawyers say the woman is suffering from post-traumatic stress and will appeal to clear her name.

"The fight for her innocence will go on regardless," said Lewis Power QC, who was assisting the local defense team.

"We will maintain this young girl was stripped of her dignity and basic human rights."

The woman insists that an assault took place and that she was pressured to withdraw her complaint during overnight questioning from police and with no lawyer present. One defence witness, a former state forensic pathologist, said her injuries were consistent with&nbsp;rape.

The case has shone a harsh spotlight on&nbsp;Cyprus, which is popular with&nbsp;British&nbsp;holidaymakers and prompted calls to boycott the island.

British&nbsp;Foreign Secretary <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/uk-pm-boris-johnson-exclaimed-with-f-word-in-reaction-to-soleimanis-killing-in-us-airstrikes-272225">Dominic Raab</a>, who has expressed "very serious concerns" about the woman's treatment, said he was relieved she would be returning home after being barred from leaving the island.

"We will be following up on some of the issues in relation to the case, I spoke to the Cypriot foreign minister about that," he said, adding there was no immediate plan to change the travel advice to&nbsp;Cyprus&nbsp;for Britons.

Twelve Israeli youths who were detained for questioning were swiftly released after the woman recanted her accusation. They were not required to give any evidence at the woman's&nbsp;trial.

Cypriot newspapers have reported that President Nicos Anastasiades might pardon the woman, although a senior government source told reporters that was premature.

Lawyers for the woman say they will press ahead with an appeal because a pardon would not expunge her criminal record.

In&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/south-asia/around-445-trespassers-trying-to-return-to-bangladesh-detained-in-last-two-months-bgb-dg-271787">Bangladesh</a>, the punishment for rape is very slow," said demonstrator Shahela, who like the 21-year-old victim of Sunday's attack is a student at the prestigious Dhaka University in the capital.&nbsp;

"We want quick executions for the perpetrators so that others are deterred from committing such crimes."

Nationwide protests gripped&nbsp;Bangladesh&nbsp;in April after a 19-year-old student who accused her seminary's head teacher of sexual harassment was doused in kerosene and set on fire.

Sixteen people were later sentenced to death over the attack, including the teacher.

Student's rape triggers protests in Dhaka

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family of Unnao's rape victim who was set ablaze and also decided to set up a fast track court for the speedy trial of the case.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Swami Prasad Maurya visited the victim's family here on Saturday along with his colleague Kamal Rani and Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj.

"Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has decided to constitute a fast track court so that accused in the case are brought to justice at the earliest. The Chief Minister has decided to give Rs 25 lakh as compensation to the family of the deceased from the CM's fund. The cheque will reach the victim's family by today evening," said Maurya.

"The whole government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath are with the family of the victim. Will ensure that justice is done in this case at the earliest," he added."All the accused will be arrested very soon," he added, saying that no culprit of the Unnao case will be spared.

"Whatever investigation the victim's family wants, we will do it. The names that have been taken by the victim, action will be taken against them. No culprit will be spared. It is not a subject of politics," he added.

"I along with my party are in support of the victim's family. I have been vocal about it in Parliament as well. The culprits will be arrested. None will be spared. Unnao's name has been maligned," said local MP Sakshi Maharaj.

After battling for life at New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, the Unnao rape victim, who was set ablaze while on her way to a court hearing on Thursday morning, died at 11:40 pm on Friday.

On Thursday, the 23-year-old was airlifted from Lucknow's SMC Government Hospital to Safdarjung Hospital.The woman had filed a rape case in March this year, which is under trial at a local court in Uttar Pradesh's Unnao.&nbsp;
