CBI gets court nod to conduct lie detector test of main accused Sanjay Roy in Kolkata rape-murder case

India's premier investigative agency, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Monday (August 19) obtained court permission to conduct a lie detector test of the main accused in the heinous rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in Kolkata.
As per reports, the permission to put Sanjay Roy through a polygraph test has been granted by the Kolkata High Court.
The development comes a day after the Supreme Court of India had stepped in, taking suo moto cognisance of the matter on Sunday (August 18).A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will hear the matter on Tuesday (August 20).
Who is the rape-murder accused Sanjay Roy?
On August 9, a post-graduate trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal. A preliminary autopsy of her body suggested that the trainee doctor was subjected to violent sexual assault.
Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested by the Kolkata Police in connection with the case.

A preliminary investigation into the matter revealed that Roy, at the time of the crime, had consumed alcohol. Citing sources, India Today reported that Sanjay went to a place behind the hospital to drink alcohol and that he used to watch porn while drinking.
CBI investigation continues
OnTuesday (Aug13), a bench of the Calcutta High Courtobserved that there had been no significant progress in investigations made by the Kolkata Police in five days since the tragic incident. Expressing its dissatisfaction, the courtordered the transfer of the probe into the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor toIndia's central investigative agency, the CBI.
Since then, the CBI has interrogated multiple doctors ofR G Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the R G Kar hospital has been grilled by the investigative agency for four consecutive days.
Meanwhile, in an interesting twist to the case, Senior Trinamool Congress leaderKunal Ghosh has reportedly submitted to the CBI documents related to the corruption of Dr Sandip Ghosh.
The TMC leader claimed that junior doctors of the hospital have supplied all the information and documents related to Sandip Ghosh's corruption. He also said that if CBI finds these documents necessary, the doctors will be happy to cooperate with the agency.
"I have handed over to CBI all the documents given to me by the doctors of RG Kar Hospital...If before 23rd August a breakthrough is reached, then it is better as the arrested accused is presented before the court on that day, then the remand copy will indicate he was the lone culprit or not," said Ghosh.
