The Mamata Banerjee government in the Indian state of West Bengal on Tuesday (Sept 3) suspended Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Ghosh's suspension was announced by the state's health department through an official order. 

“In view of the ongoing criminal investigation against Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal, RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata, Ghosh is placed under suspension under Rule 7(1c) of West Bengal Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1971, with immediate effect,” the order read.

Last week, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) had suspended Ghosh's membership.

Ghosh sent to eight-day police custody

Ghosh was the principal of the RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, where a trainee postgraduate doctor was brutally raped and murdered on August 9. He has been accused of indulging in the cover-up of the case and has undergone two rounds of polygraph tests.

On Monday, Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) over alleged corruption and financial misconduct at the college. Three other people were arrested by the CBI.

Ghosh has now been sent to police custody for eight days. The CBI had sought his custody for 10 days.

Ghosh had been under investigation for the alleged corruption and the financial misconduct at the institute, following a directive from a single bench of the Calcutta High Court, which ordered the CBI to investigate the matter.

Lawyers demand death penalty for Ghosh

Ghosh and three others arrested in the college's financial irregularities case were brought to the Alipore Judges Court in connection with the case.

A report by the news agency ANI said that outside the court, lawyers raised slogans and demanded justice for the deceased post-graduate doctor and the death penalty for Ghosh.
