The arrest comes a little over a week after the CBI raided 15 locations, including the residential premises of Ghosh. In an FIR filed against him on the direction of the Calcutta High Court, the agency alleged financial irregularities at the hospital during his tenure.

Apart from Ghosh, three Kolkata-based private entities viz., Ma Tara Traders of Madhya Jhorehat, Banipur, Howrah; Eshan Cafe of 4/1, Belgachia and Khama Louha have also been named.

According to reports, the hospital under Ghosh was allegedly carrying out various illegal activities, that included selling dead bodies. RG Kar Medical College's former deputy superintendent Akhtar Ali claimed that Ghosh was carrying out the trafficking of medical supplies and biomedical waste to Bangladesh.

Ghosh's involvement

Ghosh's involvement in financial irregularities came to light after a 31-year-old trainee doctor was brutally raped and murdered in the seminar hall of the hospital last month.

Following the heinous incident, he resigned from his post but was soon reappointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and was later removed from the post after protests.

While CBI's Special Crime Branch is probing the rape and murder case, the anti-corruption wing is now zeroing in on Ghosh over the alleged financial irregularities.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday proposed capital punishment for people convicted of rape if their action results in the victim's death or causes them to become vegetative.

The draft of the anti-rape bill will tabled by the government in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday. The draft states that people convicted of rape and gang rape would receive a life sentence lasting for the rest of their natural lives.

Mamata has come under heavy scrutiny over her government and state police's handling of the incident. Since the protests started across the country, she has written two letters to the prime minister, requesting central legislation.
