West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has invited the protesting doctors for one last meeting to address their issues. The meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday (Sep 16) at 5 pm local time, according to the email sent by Dr Manoj Pant, the chief secretary of the state.
"This is the fifth and final time we are reaching out to you for a meeting between the honourable chief minister and your delegates," read the mail.
"The meeting is scheduled for 5 PM today ie 16th September 2024 at Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Kalighat residence. The same delegation which came for the last discussions is requested to arrive at the venue at 4:45 PM today."
The previous meeting at Mamata's residence could not go ahead after the doctors demanded to livestream it to ensure full transparency.
The doctors also requested that a videographer be allowed inside the Bengal CM's premises to record the meeting. However, Mamata refused to allow any of the demands saying the case was sub-judice.
“As RG Kar issue is before the court, we cannot allow live streaming.I will do the minutes, sign it as well," said Mamata.
She also berated the protesting doctors by claiming they had "insulted" her by requesting the meeting but refusing to enter the house.“I have waited for 2 hours”, the CM added.

Notably, on Saturday (Sep 14), Mamata also made an unplanned visit toSwasthya Bhawan where doctors have been staging the protests. She urged them to quit the protests and return to work while citing her example.
"I have come to make a request as your'didi'(big sister), not as a chief minister. I am empathetic and I support your protest... I had also gone on a hunger strike for 26 days (during the protest against the acquisition of farmland in Singur), but no one from the then government came to speak to me.”

The junior doctors are seeking justice for the rape and murder of the trainee doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, even as the city experiences heavy rainfall. They have ignored the Supreme Court’s September 10, 5pm IST deadline to return to work.
The protest, which began on the evening of August 9, demands the suspension of key officials including Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, Health Secretary NS Nigam, Director of Health Services, and Director of Medical Education for allegedly failing in their responsibilities regarding the RG Kar incident.
