President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Bangladesh President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and expressed confidence that India and Bangladesh can further strengthen their bilateral partnership based on shared history and close ties.

Indian President Droupadi Murmu has extended congratulations to Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his assumption of office as President of Bangladesh, in a letter sent today, emphasising on shared history and potential for a stronger bilateral partnership between the two neighbours.

"I extend to you my warm congratulations on your assumption of office as the President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. I am confident that your long experience of public life and political leadership heralds a successful tenure in service of the people of Bangladesh," the Indian President wrote.

The letter highlighted the unique relationship rooted in "a shared history of sacrifices, close cultural ties and warm bonds of friendship." It noted that bilateral ties had "steadily expanded to several areas such as energy, technology, connectivity, youth affairs, health and education," adding: "I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the partnership between our two neighbouring countries."

Alamgir, 78, a long-time Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader and former secretary-general, was elected by parliament on 20 August. Development comes in a year when Tarique Rahman became prime minister following the BNP's landslide victory in the February 2026 elections, the first since Sheikh Hasina's government was ousted in a 2024 mass uprising. Hasina has been living in exile in India since fleeing the country.

A reset has been underway between the 2 countries after months of a freeze in ties under Yunus's interim government. Visa services have been restored, and high-level meetings have taken place, including between Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Bangladeshi counterparts.

However, progress has been uneven. A planned bilateral visit by Rahman to India remains stalled. Dhaka has linked any such trip to progress on the sensitive issue of Hasina's presence in India and related legal matters, including extradition requests. Hasina's recent media interactions from Indian soil further complicated preparations, as the Bangladeshi govt has called for the need for a "conducive environment" to advance relations.

The congratulatory letter from the Indian President, a routine diplomatic courtesy marking Alamgir's formal assumption of office, arrives against this backdrop as the Delhi-Dhaka engagement continues.
