Government welcomes Supreme Court verdict on right to privacy

The government today welcomed the Supreme Court judgement declaring the right to privacy a fundamental right.

Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, while addressing the media, said that the government has been of the view that the right to privacy is a fundamental right with regard to Aadhar.

He said that the Attorney General, on behalf of the government, argued that the Right to Privacy is a fundamental right with reasonable restrictions.

Earlier, the opposition led by the Congress slammed the government for its view on the issue.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal who appeared before the apex court for non-BJP ruled states said that the government's stand in opposing the declaration of right to privacy as a fundamental right reflects its narrow-mindedness.

"Individual house, marriages, sexual orientation, right to space, right to move freely, right to eat what an individual likes, right to be left alone are protected both within the home and at public places to the extent necessary," Sibal told PTI.

A nine-judge Constitutional bench of the Supreme Court today declared the right to privacy a fundamental right.
