China-Kyrgyzstan border region rocked by 7.0-magnitude earthquake, tremors felt in India capital

The China-Kyrgyzstan border was rocked by amajor 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Monday (Jan 22) evening, the United States Geological Survey reported. The agency also warnedof potentially widespread damage.
The news agency AFP reported that people fled their homes to seek refuge in the streets in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek. So far, authorities in Kazakhstan haven't reported any casualties or major destruction.
People in Almaty, Kazakhstan, posted videos and photos of the quake on social media forums.
The tremors of the powerful quake were felt inIndia's capital New Delhi and nearby areas, about 1,400 kilometres (870 miles) away. Reports mentioned that the tremors were felt even in Pakistan.

The quake was registered just after 2:00 am (1800 GMT Monday) at a depth of 13 kilometres in China's Xinjiang region, west of the city of Aksu. AFP report noted that shortly after, three more earthquakes were recorded in the area, at magnitudes 5.5, 5.1 and 5.0.
The earthquake came the day after a landslide buried dozens of people and killed at least eight insouthwest China.
United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the depth of the quake was 27.4 kilometres and struck the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border region. The agency also said casualties were possible. "Significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread," its report said.
On its website, USGS wrote: "The January 22, 2024, M 7.0 earthquake near the Kyrgyzstan-China border occurred as the result of oblique reverse and strike-slip faulting at shallow depth. Focal mechanism solutions for the event indicate the rupture occurred on either a moderately dipping oblique reverse and right-lateral fault striking east, or a steeply dipping oblique reverse and left-lateral fault striking west."
"The earthquake is located within the Tien Shan mountain range, an intraplate fold and thrust belt tectonically controlled largely by the collision of India into Asia," it added.
India's National Center for Seismology reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 7.2. The NCS said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 80 kilometres in China's Southern Xinjiang region.
