Story highlights

A leaked audio clip allegedly features Goldy Brar claiming responsibility for Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing. The claim, unverified independently, comes amid improving India-Canada ties under PM Mark Carney.

Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar has admitted to killing Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in an alleged leaked audio clip, which has gone viral on social media. In the audio, Brar is heard saying that Nijjar was targeted over his alleged involvement in drug trafficking and encouraging young people to sell drugs. Nijjar’s killing in Jun 2023 had soured relations between India and Canada after Ottawa accused Indian government agents of being involved in carrying out the murder.

“Those who groomed and incited 16-to-17-year-olds to sell drugs... Those who blackmailed young people into selling drugs and becoming informants... Nijjar supported and strengthened these individuals so that he could use them when necessary,” Brar allegedly says in the clip, which appears to be a recorded conversation with Khalistani terrorist Paramjit Singh Pamma. The authenticity of the clip could not be verified by WION.

In the audio, Brar also claimed Nijjar was supporting people who allegedly encouraged young people to sell drugs and act as informants.

“That’s why we, my team and I, had to kill Nijjar, because these people were using young people to sell drugs. Everyone has to face the consequences of their actions,” Brar was quoted as saying.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing

Nijjar, who founded the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), was shot dead outside a Sikh cultural centre in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023. His killing triggered a major diplomatic rift between India and Canada after then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a possible link between Indian government agents and the murder. India rejected the allegation as “absurd” and “motivated” and has consistently denied involvement in Nijjar’s killing.

Relations between New Delhi and Ottawa have shown signs of improvement since Mark Carney became Canada’s prime minister, with both sides resuming law-enforcement discussions and working to rebuild diplomatic ties. Carney met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Kananaskis in June, marking a significant step towards easing tensions between the two countries.

In July, Canadian investigators said they had found no evidence linking Indian government officials to Nijjar’s murder. RCMP deputy commissioner Lisa Moreland said, “There’s no evidence to suggest through this organised crime investigation and the charges and the indictment laid forward that Indian officials were charged or involved.”

The latest audio claim comes amid continued scrutiny of Nijjar’s killing and its impact on India-Canada relations.
