Canadian PM says he considers possibility of US military attack on his country

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney mimics the gestures and facial expressions of Donald Trump while highlighting Canada’s massive clean-energy investment project. The audience finds Carney very funny while speaking at a public event, turning the room into a laughing fit. He described the project as the equivalent of 18 Hoover Dams, one of the most iconic and massive infrastructure projects in North American history (built in the 1930s on the Colorado River). Behind the joke, Carney’s government has described the nearly C$70 billion clean-energy investment package, calling it the largest such investment in North American history. "Quebec and the Indian nation to announce the largest clean energy investment in North American history, 14 gigawatts of hydro, wind storage, the functional equivalent of 18 gigawatts and 18 Hoover dams," with the end of this speech by Carney, the audience started laughing. 'Europe and Canada stronger together': Carney ‘welcomes’ EU’s associate membership pitch amid strain in US ties

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged the Trump administration to take a more serious approach to trade negotiations, telling Washington to ‘stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough’ following another round of public attacks against Canada. However, he warned that some of Washington's demands could leave Canadian industries ‘gradually wound down in Canada and wiped out’.&nbsp;"When the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade and stop trying to be tough, and start being serious about having those discussions, we can have those discussions," Carney said. “It’s not constructive, but that’s their democracy.” Tensions between Ottawa and Washington have intensified since trade negotiations broke down on Aug. 21. Since then, Trump has continued his public criticism of Canada, including his move to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America" and repeated comments about Canada on social media.&nbsp;US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has also dismissed Canada's ability to respond to the United States on an equal footing, saying Ottawa could not go ‘tit for tat’ against an economy 13 times larger. The rhetoric escalated further Monday when US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth mocked Canada's military in an online post featuring an image of two female cadets in British Columbia with the caption “this is real.” Carney criticised the post, describing it as "beneath their office." The Pentagon responded Tuesday by saying, "The X post speaks for itself."&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russian-sky-is-becoming-completely-dangerous-zelensky-warns-as-ukraine-steps-up-drone-strikes-1788315781266">'Russian sky is becoming completely dangerous': Zelensky warns as Ukraine steps up drone strikes</a><h2>Carney rejects US trade demands</h2>Carney said some of the US proposals would effectively force Canadian companies to operate as subsidiaries of American firms or leave them vulnerable to being eliminated from the Canadian market. The results leave the Liberals with 173 of the 343 seats in the House of Commons, giving Carney additional political strength as he confronts Washington over trade, economic security and Canadian sovereignty. Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Toronto, said: "Quebecers have the most to lose in an apocalyptic scenario where the US absorbs Canada, and the status of the French language disappears."<h2>Tariffs add to Canada-US tensions</h2>The failure of negotiations has already produced new tariffs. Trump imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian goods after the talks collapsed. Canada is set to introduce retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion in US goods beginning Sept. 8. The Canadian measures will range from 15% to 50%. The escalating trade dispute comes as Trump continues to publicly discuss the possibility of Canada becoming the 51st US state, adding another layer to an increasingly tense relationship between the two North American neighbors. For now, Carney has signaled that Canada remains open to negotiations, but only if Washington returns to the table with what Ottawa considers serious and mutually workable terms.

'Infantino must go': Canada PM Carney, Portugal legend Figo come out swinging at FIFA chief Infantino

A fresh trade flashpoint has emerged between the United States and Canada. President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs of up to 50 percent on a wide range of Canadian imports, accusing Ottawa of unfair trade practices involving automobiles, dairy and alcohol. The move marks a major escalation in tensions between the two North American neighbours and has drawn a sharp response from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

US-Canada trade war: Trump hits Canada with 50% tariffs

Canada has acknowledged the involvement of a Khalistani-linked pilot in the Air India Flight 182 bombing, one of the deadliest acts of aviation terrorism in history.

The development comes as the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) paid tribute to the victims of the 1985 Kanishka bombing. The attack killed 329 people, most of them Canadian citizens of Indian origin, and remains a defining chapter in Canada's counter-terrorism history.

The renewed focus on the tragedy has revived discussions around accountability, extremism, intelligence failures and the long-lasting impact of the Kanishka bombing.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that India's presence at the G7 reflects a changing global order. While speaking at Trinity College Dublin, Carney said that the G7 countries do not run the world anymore, and the inclusion of countries like India implies that change.“Who's at the table in Evian? It's more than the G7. More than half the meeting will include so-called outreach partners, particularly India. The leaders of India and Brazil, the Gulf states as well, and the leader of Kenya, Mr Ruto, will be there,” said Carney. Canada and India will commit to expanding their trade in oil and gas as both countries look to deepen their relationship after friction between the two sides led to a diplomatic freeze for more than a year.
