Canada's Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, wins a new term in power. However, the election takes a dramatic turn with Donald Trump's comments on Canada, calling it the '51st state'. Watch this report for more information!

Mark Carney Bags Surprise Victory For Liberals, Jagmeet Singh Faces Crushing Defeat

Mark Carney’s Liberal Party has secured a fourth term in power following a landmark victory in the Canadian elections, which was highly influenced by US President Donald Trump. However, the results suggested that the Liberals fell short of a majority government. Congratulatory messages started pouring in from world leaders, including China and India, welcoming cooperation with Carney's government.

In his victory speech on Tuesday (Apr 29), Carney claimed that Trump wanted to “break” Canada, pledging to beat the US in its trade war. Trump has not only threatened Canada with tariffs but has also repeatedly suggested making the country the 51st state of the United States.
In his campaign, Carney promised to chart “a new path forward” in a world “fundamentally changed” by a United States that is newly hostile to free trade.
“We are over the shock of the American betrayal, but we should never forget the lessons,” said Carney, the former central banker and political novice who recently succeeded Justin Trudeau as Prime Minister.

“We will win this trade war and build the strongest economy in the G7,” he said.
Carney’s Liberals will need to join hands with smaller parties to form a government as they fell just short of a majority.

‘Canada first’

Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party was on track to win the elections, however, Trump’s attacks and the departure of former prime minister Justin Trudeau reshaped the race. Carney appeared an ideal candidate to fight against Trump’s threats.

‘A new path forward’: Carney’s Liberals secure victory in Canadian elections amid Trump’s looming threats

Mark Carney and the Liberal Party have pulled off a win in the Canadian general election and some credit for it could go to Donald Trump.
Since returning to the White House in January, the US president has repeatedly taunted Canada, suggesting it should become the 51st American state. His comments triggered a shift in support for the Liberals, trailing behind the Conservatives just months ago.
In his victory speech, Carney directly addressed the growing tension with Washington. “President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us. That will never ever happen,” he said, warning Canadians about threats to their sovereignty.

How Trump's return transformed Canadian elections race?

Before Trump’s comeback, the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre looked set to win easily. Frustration with the economy and fatigue after nearly ten years of Liberal rule under Justin Trudeau had pushed the party ahead in the polls.
But the Liberals shook things up. Trudeau stepped down, and the party brought in Carney, a political newcomer, but a well-known name thanks to his time as the Bank of England’s governor.
Carney made Trump a central focus of his campaign, arguing that Canada needed to stand firm against pressure from its southern neighbour. While Trump didn’t attack Carney the way he had targeted Trudeau, the two are clearly at odds on key issues.

Is Canada turning towards Europe?

Canada now appears to be rethinking its international partnerships. With Trump’s policies causing concern, there are early signs Ottawa may look to Europe for closer ties instead, a shift that is unlikely to please the US president.
Still, Carney is trying to keep trade tensions from boiling over. US tariffs on Canadian car exports are due to take effect on 3 May. As an experienced economist, Carney has promised to begin talks with Washington immediately, saying he’ll do whatever it takes to protect the Canadian economy from slipping into recession.

Another swipe from Trump on election day

Trump didn’t hold back even on the day Canadians went to the polls. He once again dismissed the US-Canada border as “artificially drawn” and said Canada would be better off as a “cherished” American state.
Despite Trump’s recent comment that he might “prefer a Liberal prime minister,” it’s unlikely either side will warm to the other any time soon.

A missed opportunity for Conservatives?

Ironically, Trump’s interference may have backfired. A Conservative win could have handed him a like-minded government in Ottawa. Poilievre and Trump seem to share common ground, from cutting taxes and slashing public spending to backing fossil fuels and criticising progressive values.

Mark Carney wins Big in Canada, thanks to Trump’s interference: Did his ‘51st State’ talk hand the Liberals election win?

In a dramatic reversal in fortunes for the Liberals, Mark Carney won the Canada elections and will form government soon, though it remains unclear if his party will get the majority. With Carney at the helm of affairs in Canada, New Delhi can hope to bury the past baggage of Trudeau's tenure.
Carney has stressed that the Canada-India relationship is "incredibly important", adding that "strains on the relationship" could be addressed with mutual respect. While Trudeau's last term depended on the support of pro-Khalistan leader Jagmeet Singh's National Democratic Party (NDP), Jagmeet Singh's loss in the polls and his decision to step down as NDP chief will prove beneficial for Canrney and in long-run the India-Canada ties.

The India-Canada relations reached the lowest in 2023 following allegations by the Trudeau government implicating "Indian agents" in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and a Khalistani terrorist. India condemned the accusations as baseless. In October 2024, tensions escalated further when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats. The fallout led both nations to expel top envoys, freeze trade negotiations, and suspend official visits, with New Delhi accusing Ottawa of tolerating extremism and shielding Khalistanis. Only time will tell how Carney would tackle the Khalistani problem and restore India's faith.

As New Delhi and Ottawa move forward, here's a quick look at controversies under Trudeau:

1. Trudeau’s 2018 India Visit
Trudeau’s state visit to India was widely criticized for being diplomatically unproductive and overly focused on photo-ops and cultural events. Moreover, A convicted Khalistani terrorist, Jaspal Atwal, was invited to official events by the Canadian delegation, causing outrage in India.
2. Khalistan Movement and Sikh Separatism
India has repeatedly expressed concern over the activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada, including public rallies and threats against Indian diplomats. Trudeau has defended the right to free speech and peaceful protest. This issue has remained a major point of contention, with India accusing Canada of harbouring separatist elements.
3. 2023 Diplomatic Crisis – Allegations Over Nijjar’s Killing
In September 2023, Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and Khalistani separatist, in British Columbia. India rejected the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated,” demanding evidence that Canada has not made public yet. This ultimately led to diplomatic fallout between the two countries.
4. G20 Summit 2023 (Delhi)
Trudeau’s participation in the G20 Summit in India was marked by frosty relations. A scheduled bilateral meeting with PM Modi happened late and led to India raising concerns about Khalistan extremism. Trudeau later accused India of not engaging constructively. Reportedly, Trudeau left the country two days later than planned – after a mechanical fault in his aeroplane.
5. Suspension of Intelligence Sharing (Five Eyes Concerns)
Trudeau’s public allegations put pressure on allies in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. While some allies (like the U.S.) called for an investigation, none fully endorsed Trudeau’s claims publicly, leading to questions about Canada’s diplomatic handling.
6. Trade and Economic Impacts
India paused negotiations on a free trade agreement with Canada in September 2023. New Delhi also suspended visas to the country. Since then, Canadian companies in India are facing ambiguity about their standing amid political tensions.

Trudeau’s 2018 India Visit Trudeau’s state visit to India was widely criticized for being diplomatically unproductive and overly focused on photo-ops and cultural events. Moreover, A convicted Khalistani terrorist, Jaspal Atwal, was invited to official events by the Canadian delegation, causing outrage in India. 2. Khalistan Movement and Sikh Separatism India has repeatedly expressed concern over the activities of pro-Khalistan groups in Canada, including public rallies and threats against Indian diplomats. Trudeau has defended the right to free speech and peaceful protest. This issue has remained a major point of contention, with India accusing Canada of harbouring separatist elements. 3. 2023 Diplomatic Crisis – Allegations Over Nijjar’s Killing In September 2023, Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and Khalistani separatist, in British Columbia. India rejected the allegations as “absurd” and “motivated,” demanding evidence that Canada has not made public yet. This ultimately led to diplomatic fallout between the two countries. 4. G20 Summit 2023 (Delhi) Trudeau’s participation in the G20 Summit in India was marked by frosty relations. A scheduled bilateral meeting with PM Modi happened late and led to India raising concerns about Khalistan extremism. Trudeau later accused India of not engaging constructively. Reportedly, Trudeau left the country two days later than planned – after a mechanical fault in his aeroplane. 5. Suspension of Intelligence Sharing (Five Eyes Concerns) Trudeau’s public allegations put pressure on allies in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. While some allies (like the U.S.) called for an investigation, none fully endorsed Trudeau’s claims publicly, leading to questions about Canada’s diplomatic handling. 6. Trade and Economic Impacts India paused negotiations on a free trade agreement with Canada in September 2023. New Delhi also suspended visas to the country. Since then, Canadian companies in India are facing ambiguity about their standing amid political tensions.
Here are key takeaways from the two-hour debate

Legacy of Justin Trudeau

Justin Trudeau's shadow did not seem to leave Carney as the others in the debate slammed him for being "just another Trudueu." However, Carney sought to distance himself from his predecessor. Poilievre criticized what he called the “lost Liberal decade” under Trudeau. "Mark Carney is asking for a fourth Liberal term repeating exactly the same Liberal promises that priced you out of the house," Poilievre said.
"It may be difficult for Mr. Poilievre...You spent years running against Justin Trudeau and the carbon tax, and they are both gone...I am a very different person than Justin Trudeau."

US President Donald Trump's policies

All the candidates agreed that President Trump’s economic policies and his proposal to annex Canada have created a furore and that they would negotiate toughly with the US. But none of them offered any specific details about how they would get the American president to change course. Poilievre blamed the Liberal government for putting Canada “under the thumb” of the United States. Carney presented himself as a tough negotiator by mentioning his track record as the Governor.

Immigration

Speaking on immigration, Carney stated, "The system isn't working, especially after the pandemic. Our population has gone up at about three per cent because of immigration and that's why we need to have a cap for a certain period of time." This cap, according to Carney, would remain in place for "a couple of years". Poilievre advocated for reduced immigration levels to ensure the population doesn't grow faster than available housing, jobs, or healthcare. "I think we should go back to immigration levels so that the population never grows faster than the number of houses, jobs or healthcare available," he said.

Gaza War

The New Democratic Party's Jagmeet Singh was the only one to call the war in Gaza as "genocide." Carney described it as "horrific" but did not specifically used the word "genocide." Poilievre said he would cut off foreign aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and accused their employees of participating in the attacks of October 7, 2023.

Building oil and gas pipelines

Poilievre called for a rapid approval process to build oil and natural gas pipelines across Canada that would enable the country to sell those resources to Europe. Carney also spoke about building more pipelines but said he would create a new single approval process that involves provinces and Indigenous people.
The debate also touched upon other issues, including public safety and security, border security, crime and gangs, among others.
